THE TOLTON ROOM
Since the new, large and comfortable meeting room was created in the school as one of the projects associated with our To Teach Who Christ Is capital campaign, we’ve been calling it “the new meeting room in the school”, a rather long and cumbersome name. After consultation among the members of the Parish Pastoral Council and Pastoral Staff, it’s been decided to give that room a proper name in honor of Fr. Augustus Tolton, the first African-American priest in the United States and a priest of the Archdiocese of Chicago in the late 19th century.
At some point in recent years, I hope you’ve heard about Fr. Tolton, particularly because our Vicar, Bishop Joseph Perry, has spear-headed Fr. Tolton’s cause for canonization. Fr. Tolton was born into slavery in Monroe Co., Missouri in 1854 and escaped to Quincy, Illi-nois with his family during the Civil War. He studied for the priest-hood in Rome because no American seminary would accept him on account of his race. He was ordained in 1889 and eventually was invited to come to Chicago where he became pastor of St. Monica parish until his untimely death from heat stroke in 1897. His minis-try in Chicago was marked by extraordinary concern for the poor and tireless devotion to his parishioners.
His road to canonization began in 2010 when Cardinal George an-nounced that Fr. Tolton’s cause had been accepted in Rome and he was declared a “Servant of God, the first step toward sainthood. And just this year, his cause was advanced to the next stage where the holiness and heroism of his life will be examined in Rome. The next step along the road to canonization would be declaring him “venerable.” “Blessed” comes next when a miracle can be attributed to his intercession. Finally, usually after a second miracle has been confirmed, he would be declared a saint. There is never any specific timeline as to how long that process will last, but the journey has begun.
But back to The Tolton Room….The room is nearly completed with window blinds, air conditioning and an awning over the south school doors being the only remaining additions; hopefully all those will be in place by the end of June. Then, at some point, Bishop Perry has offered to come to bless this new gathering space for us; we’ll work at finding a day and time to make that happen. In the meantime, you can find Fr. Tolton’s full biography on the web-site of the Archdiocese of Chicago or access it directly at http://tolton.archchicago.org.

GOSPEL READING
John 21:1-19 Jesus appears to the
disciples for a third time after his Res-
urrection and shares a meal with
them.
FAMILY CONNECTION
Today's Gospel describes what we can
easily imagine as a picnic on the
beach. Just as Jesus' miracle at the
wedding feast at Cana blesses the
love between man and woman cele-
brated in the sacrament of marriage,
Jesus' attentiveness to food and meal-
times raises the possibility that our
meal gatherings can be sacred times.
In families, the domestic church, our
meals together are everyday opportu-
nities to gather and recall Jesus' pres-
ence with us. As in the Eucharist, we
bring the gifts that God has given us,
which have been prepared especially
for our Mass, and at our family meals
we share gifts that God has given to us
and that we have worked together to
prepare. This includes the food on the
table and also the people who gather
around the table. We ask God to bless
these gifts and to be present among
us in all of our interactions.
Consider a recent family meal: What
food was served? Where did the food
come from? Who prepared the food?
Who served the food? Was mealtime a
happy time? Why or why not? Observe
that today's Gospel tells about a meal
that Jesus shared with his disciples
after his Resurrection. Read aloud to-
day's Gospel, John 21:1-14. Reflect on
the Gospel reading using the ques-
tions above. Talk about ways in which
this meal that Jesus shared with his
disciples might remind us of the meal
we share at the Eucharist. You might
choose to plan a special meal together
as a family, encouraging each person
to participate in the meal preparation.
Pray together that Jesus will make his
loving presence known in your family
life. Pray together the Lord's Prayer.

Have you ever wondered how you could help
make someone else's life better? The Re-
spect Life Ministry is very happy to tell you
that, once again, during the month of May,
St. Joseph Parish will have a baby crib set up
in the southeast corner of the Church. LET’S
FILL IT UP WITH BABY STUFF! Let’s fill it up to overflowing with dia-
pers, blankets, baby shampoo, baby lotion, baby wipes, pacifiers,
baby food, gently used baby clothes, any and all baby goods that you
can think of and fit in the crib. Don’t worry, we’ll make room for what-
ever you can give.
All your gifts will be donated to south side agencies who provide as-
sistance to meet the material, emotional and spiritual needs of
women, and their families, by offering hope and giving real help to all
who are affected by unplanned pregnancies and who have chosen to
give life to, and keep, their babies.
YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE.
YOU CAN HELP MAKE SOMEONE ELSE’S LIFE BETTER.
PLEASE HELP. PLEASE GIVE.

Self-care is never a selfish act - it is simply good stewardship of
the only gift I have, the gift I was put on earth to offer others.
Anytime we can listen to true self and give the care it requires,
we do it not only for ourselves, but for the many others whose
lives we touch.

For Your Information "UNPLANNED"
Please consider going to see
"UNPLANNED" the new Hollywood
pro-life movie which portrays the
true story of Abby Johnson who
worked at Planned Parenthood for
eight years. She rose through the
ranks as a Volunteer Escort, then
as Clinic Counselor, and finally as Clinic Director, one of the youngest
Clinic Directors in the country. Abby was chosen for the Planned Par-
enthood Employee of the Year award in 2008, setting an example of
how to run a clinic with as many abortions as possible, which is their
biggest money maker. Then it all changed when she was asked to as-
sist in an ultrasound-guided abortion. She recalls "The abortion was
for a 13-week pregnancy. On the ultrasound screen I could easily see
the baby moving it's head, arms, and legs. The abortionist turned on
the abortion instrument, a suction tube, and I saw the baby jerk away
from it. Then I saw the baby's body, arms and legs and back-
bone, pulled apart right in front of me on the screen, just inches from
the probe I was holding. In mere seconds, the child which was alive a
few minutes ago was now dead. In that moment, I saw for myself, for
the first time, what I had been supporting for the past eight years, and
it broke me. I couldn't get it out of my mind.
A week later I left Planned Parenthood, and eventually wrote a book
about my eight years of experiences there. I titled my book
"Unplanned."
Two directors - both men - in Hollywood approached me five years ago
about turning my "Unplanned" book, into a movie. This was my true
story, and I was surprised that someone in Hollywood wanted to tell it.
Go see the movie, so you are able to say that you know what abortion
is and you know what happens when a woman walks into Planned Par-
enthood. If you are pro-life or pro-choice, you should know exactly what
you are supporting.
The movie "Unplanned' Opened to a Strong $6.1 Million at the U.S. Box
Office.
