WINTER ADULT FORMATION/BIBLE STUDY
It’s that time of year for another round of entertaining and infor-mative sessions related to scripture. There will be four sessions for this series, three in January and one in February (with my winter week in Florida interrupting the third and fourth sessions).
The focus will be on the world in which the Church began and grew—the Eastern Mediterranean in the time of Jesus and St. Paul. Their values were dramatically different from those of the 21st cen-tury—some good, some less good, perhaps. But in order to under-stand the origins of our faith and the writings that chart the begin-nings of the Church, it really helps to appreciate the world in which it all began—especially when we’re dealing with St. Paul.
These sessions will be an amalgam of several seminars I’ve been privileged to attend over the past twenty years and I’ve just started to sort it all out, so the following session descriptions may change a bit or overlap by the time we begin. But here is the tenta-tive outline for this winter’s program, with all sessions on Satur-days at 1:00p.m. in the Tolton Room (school side doors along the driveway):
January 11 – First Century Mediterranean Culture: How do their
values differ from those of the modern world, especially in the U.S.? How do those values shape the gospels and the letters of St. Paul?
January 18 – Family Life in the World of Jesus & the Early
Church: What can this tell us about the family life of Jesus and St. Paul’s concern for the development of the early Church?
January 25 – The Impact of First Century Family Life & Culture
on the Gospels: How did these 1st century values shape Jesus’ min-istry and the composition of the gospels?
February 8 – St. Paul’s Ministry & Letters: How did 1st century
values shape Paul’s view of women and his concern for the devel-opment and growth of the Church?
If you wish to attend one or more of the sessions—understanding that the exact topics might morph a bit along the way—please call the rectory (708-798-0622, ext. 0) by January 9th to register, indicat-ing if you wish to either borrow or buy ($10.00) a Revised New American Bible.

CELEBRATE LITTLE CHRISTMAS WITH ST. JOSEPH
PARISH AT OUR WEEKEND MASSES JANUARY 4—5
Everyone knows that Christmas is celebrated on De-
cember 25th, but 12 days later, on January 6th, many
Christians around the world enjoy a Little Christmas
celebration. The first weekend of January is actually
known by many names, including, the Epiphany of the Lord, Three Kings’
Day, the 12th Day of Christmas or Little Christmas. January 6th was first
celebrated as a feast day in the 4th century to commemorate Jesus’ intro-
duction in human form. Religious scholars explain that for many devout
Christians, Christmas is a season rather than a day; — with festivities begin-
ning with Advent and concluding with the Epiphany. And for these many
Christians, whether you call it the Epiphany or Little Christmas, on January
6, gifts are exchanged in celebration of when the wise men (or Magi)
brought gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh to the baby Jesus. Tradition
names these wise men Caspar, Melchior and Balthasar.
St. Joseph Parish and the Respect Life Ministry will be taking up a Second
Collection for Little Christmas on Epiphany weekend. Will you be among
those who bring your gift of a special offering on Saturday, January 4 or
Sunday, January 5, 2020? Your special offering will be given to Aid for
Women and Southside Pregnancy Center to support their pro-life work and
their hope-filled ministries. For women facing an unexpected pregnancy, Aid
for Women and Southside Pregnancy Center offer hope and practical sup-
port. For women and men who have experienced an abortion and are now
struggling with their decision, Aid for Women and Southside Pregnancy Cen-
ter are there to listen and to help. For parents entering a new chapter of
life Aid for Women and Southside Pregnancy Center offer resources and
training. For those at risk of unhealthy behaviors Aid for Women and South-
side Pregnancy Center offer early intervention programs. All donations are
100% tax deductible as allowable by law. Aid for Women and Southside
Pregnancy Center are 501(c)3 organizations and accept no federal funding.
Aid for Women and Southside Pregnancy Center rely on the generous sup-
port of individuals, churches and businesses.
The Respect Life Ministry of St. Joseph Parish wish you and your family an
extra measure of comfort, joy and love this Christmas and throughout the
New Year. Thank you for all you do for life.

For Your Information MEDICAL MYTHS THAT HARM, NOT HELP
Modern medicine has long since moved past medieval treatments like lobotomies to ―help‖ those with mental
health issues and bloodletting for ―curing‖ the common cold, but there are still plenty of health myths out there.
Misconception: Fresh air helps cuts heal faster.
Modern: Keeping a wound moist by covering it reduces infection risk, lessens the chance of re-injury and allows the
cells to repair faster. Keeping the wound dry will lead to a scab, which increases the likelihood of scarring.
Misconception: Sterilize a cut with hydrogen peroxide.
Modern: Yes, hydrogen peroxide may help kill bacteria, but it’s also killing the surrounding healthy skin cells, imped-
ing the body’s ability to heal the wound and increasing the likelihood of a noticeable scar. Instead, wash the cut
with soap and water and cover it with a bandage. If the cut is large, or exceptionally deep, seek medical attention
right away, as you may need stitches.
Misconception: Butter and toothpaste soothe burns.
Modern: Burns need to cool naturally. Putting butter, toothpaste or other non-burn-specific ointments on a burn may
temporarily feel cool but will ultimately clog the pores and stifle the body’s ability to cool itself. Instead, run cool– not
cold – water over the burn for about 20 minutes. If you do choose to put something on it, use an ointment made for
burns, triple antibiotic or bacitracin ointment or aloe vera gel. If the burn is severe – is blistered, covers a large part
of the body, is oozing and/or you notice increased pain, redness and swelling – it’s best to seek medical attention.
Misconception: Treat frostbite with hot water.
Modern: Skin exposed for too long to below-freezing weather does not necessarily cause full-blown frostbite. The
first stage of frostbite is frostnip (your skin turns red, feels very cold and you experience prickling and numbness),
which does not cause permanent damage and should be treated by rewarming the area with warm, not hot, water.
For true frostbite (pain, burning, numbness, muscle stiffness, further color changes, blisters and loss of sensation),
it’s a must to seek medical help, as it can damage skin, tissue, muscle and bone. This can lead to permanent dam-
age, especially if the skin is thawed and then refreezes.
Misconception: Stop a nosebleed by tilting your head back or applying ice.
Modern: Leaning forward will prevent blood from running down the back of your throat, which can irritate the stom-
ach and lead to vomiting. Instead, pinch the soft part of your nostrils together right underneath the boney bridge,
lean forward and breath through your mouth. Ice does not help stop the bleeding.
Misconception: Feed a cold, starve a fever.
Modern: If you are not feeling well, regardless of the type of illness, proper nutrition is needed to help your immune
system recover.
Misconception: Coughing up green mucus means you need antibiotics.
Modern: The color of your mucus is no longer used to determine antibiotic use. Viruses are often accompanied by
lots of phlegm, and antibiotics are only effective for bacterial infections.
Misconception: Treat a sprained ankle with heat.
Modern: Don’t use heat for this injury. I.C.E. is best; Ice on and off every hour or two when you are awake for 20
minutes at a time, Compress the ankle with an elastic wrap and Elevate the ankle above your heart. Finally, stay off
the ankle to help heal the sprain and keep the swelling down.
If the pain is excruciating, there is immediate bruising and you cannot put any weight on your foot, it’s likely more
serious than a sprain, and a visit to the ER is in order.
Misconception: If you swallow poison, make yourself vomit.
Modern: There are certain poisons that can cause more damage on the way back up. Call 911 immediately, and
then call the Poison Control Center 24/7 at 1-800-222-1222 to see if there is anything that should be done before
help arrives. In a true medical emergency, always dial 911 for help. If your injury is not life-threatening, but too seri-
ous to handle with a first-aid kit, call your primary care physician for tips on how to handle, or visit an immediate/
urgent care center. Adapted from health Enews, 12/11/19
Wishing you joy and good health,

GOSPEL: MATTHEW 2:13-15, 19-23
When the magi had departed, be-
hold, the angel of the Lord appeared
to Joseph in a dream and said, "Rise,
take the child and his mother, flee to
Egypt, and stay there until I tell you.
Herod is going to search for the child
to destroy him." Joseph rose and
took the child and his mother by
night and departed for Egypt. He
stayed there until the death of
Herod, that what the Lord had said
through the prophet might be ful-
filled, Out of Egypt I called my son.
When Herod had died, behold, the
angel of the Lord appeared in a
dream to Joseph in Egypt and said,
"Rise, take the child and his mother
and go to the land of Israel, for those
who sought the child's life are dead."
He rose, took the child and his
mother, and went to the land of Is-
rael. But when he heard that Arche-
laus was ruling over Judea in place
of his father Herod, he was afraid to
go back there. And because he had
been warned in a dream, he de-
parted for the region of Galilee. He
went and dwelt in a town called Naz-
areth, so that what had been spoken
through the prophets might be ful-
filled, He shall be called a Nazorean.
