This is one of those weeks for covering a bit more territory than
usual, so here goes….
New meeting room and washroom renovation
If you’ve seen the dumpster on the south side of the school, you
know that some work has been going on in there for a few weeks.
The work involves the remodeling of the first floor washrooms,
both for the purpose of updating them and also to make them
handicapped accessible. The other project is the creation of a large
meeting room adjacent to the handicapped accessible doors in the
driveway between the school and rectory. A wall has been torn
down between the old faculty room and the neighboring classroom
to create a large space that could accommodate up to 100 people,
but with a folding door in the middle allowing two smaller meeting
rooms to be created. At the west end of the room there will be a re-
frigerator, microwave and storage space, with a sink available
across the hall in the science lab. The entire room will be air-
conditioned and carpeted, and it will be available to any parish
groups who wish the convenience of accessible meeting space or,
particularly in the case of my twice-yearly Adult Formation/
Scripture Study sessions, a less-cramped space to better accommo-
date all who wish to attend. All this is being done with the funds
you are contributing to our To Teach Who Christ Is capital campaign,
and the work should be completed by the end of July.
Summer flower donations
Once again this summer, you’re invited to donate fresh flowers for
the sanctuary in church. If you wish your flower donation to be in
memory of someone, that will be noted in the weekly bulletin.
These can be flowers from your own garden (we have plenty of
vases here) or they can be ordered from a florist and delivered to
us. The arrangement needs to be large enough to be seen in front of
the altar and you can call the rectory office or me to indicate your
desire to make a floral donation. Last summer, our generous
neighbor and parishioner at Eighner’s donated flowers on multiple
occasions and I was extremely grateful for that.
Summer Scripture
The votes are in from those who attended the winter sessions and
the winner is a multi-focused, four-week series based on topics cov-
ered about five years ago during my annual visit to Georgetown.

The sessions will include: one evening on the groundbreaking
document Dei Verbum (The Word of God) promulgated by the
Council of Trent, and three evenings revolving around Social Con-
cern in the Gospel of Luke; Women and Feminine Imagery in the Gospel of
John; and Mary as Prophet. We will meet on four Tuesday or
Wednesday evenings beginning August 1st, hopefully in the new,
more spacious meeting space in the school. No need to call now to
register; I’ll describe all this in more detail a month from now and
invite you to register then.

HOMEWOOD’S MEMORIAL DAY CEREMONY
Fr. Dan Jarosewic served as chaplain for the Village of Homewood’s Memorial Day ceremony and gave the prayer in honor of those who died in service to the country. The event started with a parade led by school bands and veterans from St. Joseph’s to Harwood Avenue. Hun-dreds gathered at the Veterans Memorial on Harwood Avenue Monday, May 28, for the observance.

Mark 14:12-16,22-26 Jesus shares his Last Supper with his disciples.
FAMILY CONNECTION In the beginning of today’s Gospel, Jesus instructs his disciples to make preparations for the Passover meal. Like most meals, the Passover meal required planning and preparation. Our celebration of the Sunday Eucha-rist also requires planning and prepa-ration. Certainly the ministers at the Eucharist prepare for their roles: the person presiding prays and prepares the homily; the prayers of petition are written; the music ministers prayer-fully select music and practice it be-fore Mass; Eucharistic ministers, lec-tors and altar servers prepare care-fully for their roles. As the worshiping assembly, we can also prepare for the Mass through our prayer during the week, by reading the Scripture before Mass, and by making our-selves present to the Eucharistic celebration. As you gather as a family, talk about some of the things that are required to prepare for your family meals. Plan together a special Sunday meal by choosing the menu, preparing the shopping list, and assigning duties for cooking, setting the table, prepar-ing decorations, leading the prayers, and cleaning. Read together today’s Gospel, Mark14:12-16,22-26. Notice how Jesus instructed his disciples to prepare for their Passover meal. All meals require some kind of planning and preparation; so, too, our Sunday Eucharist requires planning. What might we do as a family to better pre-pare for our celebration of the Eucha-rist? Choose one or more ideas to begin to implement together as a family. Pray together that God will help your family make your celebra-tion of the Eucharist the highlight of your week. PAPAL SISTINE CHAPEL CHOIR — SATURDAY, JULY 21ST
TO MAKE RARE APPEARANCE IN UNITED STATES
The Vatican’s Sistine Chapel Choir is set to embark on a month-long U.S. tour with planned performances in eight select major cities: Atlanta, New York, St. Louis, Detroit, Miami, Boston, Los Angeles, and Chicago. Various domestic performances will include appearances by local choral groups.
The parish music department is coordinating a round-trip excursion complete with show ticket and transportation from Homewood to the Aire Crown Theater on Saturday, July 21st. The cost is $105 per person and includes free parking in the church parking-lot. For more informa-tion and to order tickets, visit the parish website posjhomewood.org. Space is limited. Tickets are on a first-come, first-serve basis.

THE POWER OF FAMILY RITUALS
Rituals are powerful; they help us see what we otherwise might for-get to look for. The same is true at home. Daily rituals and family traditions serve to show us and our children who we are and what matters to us. Here are some good opportunities to intro-duce rituals into your family life.
BEDTIME Bedtime rituals can be a challenge at the end of a long day, but chil-dren often need help falling asleep as nighttime fears arise. Take this opportunity to introduce bedtime prayers to your children and to help them develop trust in God as our protector and provider. See this time spent as an investment in your child’s spiritual and emotional wellness. As your children grow, don’t abandon the bedtime ritual, but adapt it to suit their needs.
BIRTHDAYS AND BAPTISMAL DAYS Birthday celebrations are great ways to emphasize that your children are unique and loved. Recognizing, in some significant way, your chil-dren’s baptismal day is a great way to celebrate their relationship with God. A simple way to celebrate a baptismal anniversary is to light a candle, explain why you gave your child his or her name, and then spend a moment talking about the goodness you see in that child. In this way you will nurture the natural spirituality of your children and demonstrate that there is more to them than they probably know.
EVERY DAY Some of the best family fun can be had by developing little rituals that are unique to your lives together. There's many simple practices that celebrate the sacred. Perhaps every Friday night your family eats pizza, piles on the couch together, and watches a movie. Or perhaps New Year’s Day is your family’s day to go on a long hike in the woods. Value these rituals and know that they are anchors for your kids in a turbulent world.
MEALS Eating a family meal on a regular basis is a profound ritual. Begin the meal with prayer. Make time for everyone to share something about their day. Try fun meal-time questions like those in The Meal Box, they will encourage conversation, laughter, and sharing. Above all, make the table a welcoming, come-as-you-are place. Welcome friends, neighbors, and those in need to your table as well. Jesus did some of his best teaching from the dinner table. You can too, just by passing the pota-toes.

Protecting children from harm extends beyond the time that they are under your direct supervision. Know where your children spend their time when school is out or they are not in the house. Before enrolling your child at a summer camp or other program, see if a background screening check is completed on the individu-als working or volunteering with the children. Make sure there will be adult supervision of your children at all times, and make sure you are made aware of all activities and field trips offered by the camp or program.
PUBLIC SPACE SUMMER SAFETY TIPS
When going to a public entertain-ment venue (such as an amuse-ment park, concert, zoo, etc.) pay careful attention to who they are with, and where they are located. If possible, stay with them, and never allow them to accept any prizes, offers, or gifts from anyone until they have checked with you first.
Get information about the venue prior to your trip and review guide-lines, particularly regarding lost children. Discuss the information as a family including what to do if lost or separated. Ask your children what they would do in certain situa-tions and practice appropriate ac-tions.
