MORE BITS & PIECES
Hopefully by the time you see this, we will have begun the re-vised weekend mass schedule—something I won’t be sure of until several days after I’ve had to write this. But as we con-tinue to perfect the “reopening” process, it might be possible in coming weeks to add another Sunday Mass since the “sanitizing” process seems to be going faster than we antici-pated—thanks to generous volunteers and to the ingenuity of the reopening team leaders. I’ll let you know as far in advance as possible when any changes will take place. However, until further notice from the Archdiocese, sign-up will still be re-
quired, either online at the parish website (stjoehomewood.org) or by phone (beginning Monday, June 29)—M/W/F: 8:00a.m. to 4:00p.m., T/Th.: 8:00a.m. to 7:30p.m., Sat.: 8:00a.m. to 1:30p.m. & Sun.: 9:00a.m. to 10:30a.m.
Moving on, we will resume the 8:30a.m. morning mass, Tues-day thru Friday, beginning July 7, and phone or online sign-up will be required for those as well for purposes of contact tracing. Monday is not possible for now because of the short-age of volunteers available to sanitize the church after the 10:30 Sunday Mass, and Saturday will not be possible for the same reason. As I’ve said before, the 6:30a.m. communion service will probably not resume until the sanitizing requirement is lifted, and the same goes for scheduled confessions since we are not able to use the Reconciliation rooms. For now, those who wish to go to confession need to call for an appointment.
Finally, a number of thank-you’s and an appeal…..First, thanks to Dave Wolken, Steve McDowell, Michael Cap, Jim Wright and Karen Shifflett who formed our “reopening team and to all the generous parishioners who volunteered to assist with set-up, greeting and sanitizing; we couldn’t have gotten to this point without their dedication. Second, thanks to all who have continued to either drop off or mail in their weekly offerings or who have given electronically. Our total income is certainly not what it needs to be, but not quite as bad as it could have been without your faithfulness.
The appeal is for those who might have fallen behind in their weekly offerings; please do your best to catch up if that’s pos-sible for you. Of course, if your income has suffered during these past months, you need to make sure that your own needs are taken care of first. The simple fact is that, although services

haven’t been possible, the bills never stopped coming—from util-ity companies or from the Archdiocese, to whom we still owed over $56,000 as of last week for insurance, employee benefits and other services. Until we resume a more regular worship schedule, the easiest way to ensure that your donations keep coming to us is to sign up for electronic giving—either on our website or by call-ing the Rectory—Monday thru Thursday for now—8:00a.m. to 4:00p.m., and Agatha will help you to get that started.
I look forward to seeing many of you—or at least your eyes—very soon.

13H SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
When we were baptized, we were baptized
into Christ’s death. Take a moment to pon-
der these profound words. We were bap-
tized into death. In every sense of the
word, we are asked to die. This is not just
about our final death but about daily
deaths due to inconvenience, discomfort, pain, loss, or others’ needs.
This is an incredible epiphany given the way we very often approach our
lives. We do everything to avoid death, let alone encounter it! Many
avoid pain, discomfort, inconvenience, uneasiness, change, interfer-
ence, and suffering of any kind. We put a lot of energy into finding the
easiest and least inconvenient way through many things. Even holding
the door open for a stranger or saying hello to someone in the store can
be major undertakings.
We are called to die. One of the biggest wake-up calls we can have is
realizing that life is not about us! There are millions of other people shar-
ing life on this planet with whom I have a relationship. Does my life cele-
brate those relationships? The most distracting question we can ask is,
―What do I want to do?‖ The more focused, faith-filled question is, ―What
do I need to do?‖ What I need to do may not be what I want to do. How-
ever, asking this question more frequently will teach us how to more pur-
posefully and intentionally live so we can be a life giving vessel for oth-
ers. When we learn to live more sacrificially, to put the needs of others
before our own, and to not always seek our own self-interest, we be-
come aware of what baptism into Christ’s death is really all about. These
are the roots of virtue and the seedbed for justice, tolerance, solidarity,
love, and peace.
Learning how to accept all the ―small deaths‖ and sacrifices life calls us
to teaches us how to approach our final death. All deaths ask us to
empty ourselves into something or someone else. Whether we empty
ourselves into the heart and soul of another human being or empty our-
selves into God at the moment of our final death, new life is always re-
ceived and nurtured. A heart that exclusively seeks its own interest is a
heart that is closed to love. A heart that pours itself out to others and is
content with being emptied is a heart that has been touched by and
open to mercy. It is a heart that overflows with joy. ©LPi

DO YOU HAVE DRY SKIN FROM ALL THAT HAND WASHING? By: Neda Veselinovic
Diligent hand washing with soap and water, or using alcohol-based
hand sanitizer, can help stop the spread of COVID-19. But it also
can lead to dry hands.
How do you prevent dry hands and the spread of the virus at the
same time?
Dr. Amy Brodsky, a dermatologist with Advocate Lutheran General
Hospital, shares tips on how to keep your skin healthy during ex-
tensive, but necessary, hand washing. ―Soap and water not only
rinse away germs, but also strip the skin of natural oils, causing it
to dry out,‖ says Dr. Brodsky. ―This can cause dry skin and for
some dermatitis, a skin irritation that looks red, swollen and dry.
Hand hygiene is extremely important during the COVID-19 out-
break and there are steps you can take to prevent skin irritation.‖
Taking preventive measures can help alleviate dryness. Here are
three tips to follow:
Wash your hands in lukewarm water using soap, for at least 20
seconds. Hot water can damage your skin. Use alcohol-based
hand sanitizer when soap and water is not available.
When drying your hands, remember to use a towel or paper
towel versus an air dryer, and dry under your rings.
Use a hand cream to moisturize after applying hand sanitizer
or washing your hands. A lotion has more water than oil and a
cream has more oil than water, therefore cream is a better way
to moisturize.
If you develop cracked, swollen, or itchy skin, you may need advice
from a dermatologist and prescription strength topicals. Health eNews, 6/22/20
Wishing you joy and good health,
Mary Bohlen RN

RECOGNIZE GOD IN YOUR ORDINARY MOMENTS
GOD IS LOVE
I was recently at a Catholic con-
ference and had a conversation
with someone living in the thick
of Hollywood culture. He was
Catholic and spoke of how hard it
was to live out his faith amid tre-
mendous temptation and negativ-
ity toward religion. He spoke
about how going to daily Mass
helped to keep him centered and
stay strong in his faith. He was a
great witness to living out one’s
faith in the face of disbelief.
One thing that he told me stood
out above all the rest. He spoke
of his engagement to his fiancé
and how important it was to him
that God was a major part of their
relationship and their lives as in-
dividuals as well. He told me he
said something to her like, ―If you
don’t love Jesus more than you
love me, this is never going to
work.‖ What an amazing and truly
moving witness!
Songs and books are written
about the intense longing one
human being can have for an-
other. We can describe another
as meaning everything to us. We
speak of wanting to offer our
complete selves to our beloved.
However, true love is about more
than wanting to be with that per-
son. It is about wanting that per-
son to know a love even greater
than theirs: the love of God. No
love can last without God. My Hol-
lywood friend knew this to be the
case. He showed his true love for
his wife-to-be by sharing more
than himself — he shared the very
One who created love.

Gospel Reading
Matthew 10:37-42
Jesus outlines the costs and rewards of discipleship.
BACKGROUND ON THE GOSPEL READING
Today’s Gospel is the conclusion of the instructions and consolations that we have heard Jesus offering to
his disciples during the past few weeks. In this passage, Jesus summarizes both the costs of discipleship and
its rewards. Once again our understanding of the Gospel is strengthened by considering the context in which
it was written and the perspective of Matthew’s audience.
The conditions of discipleship outlined in Matthew’s Gospel may appear harsh. Yet they underline for us a
truth—choosing anything with one’s whole heart has consequences. Choosing life with Christ means that
every relationship we have must be understood from a new perspective. For many in Matthew’s community,
this choice brought division to their family.
Matthew also outlines the reward of hospitality offered to Jesus’ followers. In today’s Gospel, Jesus explains
the difficulties of discipleship, yet reveals that those who welcome the disciples have also welcomed him.
Today’s Gospel also highlights for us the importance of hospitality in the Christian life. To welcome another in
Jesus’ name is to extend hospitality to Jesus himself. We have many opportunities in our daily life to reach
out to others, to be a welcoming presence and a sign of God’s love.

Gospel Reading : Mt 10:37-42 Jesus said to his apostles: ―Whoever loves father or mother more than
me is not worthy of me, and whoever loves son or daughter more than
me is not worthy of me; and whoever does not take up his cross and
follow after me is not worthy of me. Whoever finds his life will lose it,
and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. "Whoever receives
you receives me, and whoever receives me receives the one who sent
me. Whoever receives a prophet because he is a prophet will receive a
