CELEBRATE WHILE WE WAIT

Back in the 1970’s, at my first parish after ordination, I created an Advent program of scripture readings, music, liturgical dance along with a puppet show telling the sad but lovely story of Bar-rington Bunny. I called it Celebrate While We Wait. It was easy to put together something like that in a parish with a large school and be-fore the era when sports dominated the lives of families, because there was no shortage of older grammar school kids as well as teens in the youth group who wanted to be involved along with adult readers and musicians. It was just one evening, but it brought hun-dreds of parishioners together to help make the waiting time of Ad-vent the time of celebration that it can and should be.

I no longer have the resources—including the puppets which a friend borrowed and then lost when his family moved—to put any-thing like that together, but we do have two wonderful events com-ing up this week that can help us celebrate the Advent season in anticipation of the full celebration of Christmastime that begins on the night of December 24th and continues until January 12th. This Sunday night, December 8th, we welcome the South Holland Mas-ter Chorale presenting their 19th annual Holiday Concert right here in church at 4:00p.m. Their previous church home recently closed and it’s their hope to make St. Joseph their permanent concert home now and in the future. We’re honored to welcome them and I hope many of you will come out to enjoy this afternoon concert entitled The Morning Star.

Then, this coming Tuesday, December 10th, my friend Gavin Coyle returns for a wonderful evening of Christmas music—and perhaps a show tune or Celtic song—here in church, at 7:00p.m. (Gavin will return in the spring for his annual “St. Patrick’s Day” concert on Tuesday, March 24th.) Those who have heard him before know what an amazing voice he possesses and what delightful stories he tells along the way. As always, Gavin’s CD’s will be available for purchase. But an additional reason to celebrate is that both of these events are FREE! Well, there will be a request for a freewill offering at both, but that allows everyone to give whatever they’re able—or “willing”—to give to show their appreciation for the musical gift they’ve been given.

So, pray for good weather this Sunday and Tuesday and give your-self an early Christmas present as we celebrate while we wait.

Fr. Bob

JESSE TREE The Jesse tree helps us con-

nect the custom of decorating

Christmas trees to the events

leading to Jesus’ birth. The

Jesse tree is named from

Isaiah 11:1: ―A shoot shall

come out of the stock of Jesse,

and a branch shall grow out of

his roots.‖ Jesse was the father

of King David. We adorn a

Jesse tree with illustrated orna-

ments that represent the peo-

ple, prophesies, and events

leading up to the birth of Jesus.

The ornaments of the Jesse

tree tell the story of God in the

Old Testament, connecting the

Advent season with the faithful-

ness of God across four thou-

sand years of history.

ADVENT FAMILY PRAYER

God of Love,

Your son, Jesus, is your great-

est gift to us.

He is a sign of your love.

Help us walk in that love

during the weeks of Advent,

As we wait and prepare for

his coming.

We pray in the name of

Jesus, our Savior.

Amen. www.loyolapress.com

LITTLE BETHLEHEM ARTS

DECEMBER 14 & 15

ST. JOSEPH CHURCH, HOMEWOOD, IL

Again this year, we will host representa-

tives of the Catholic Christian Commu-

nity from Jerusalem and Bethlehem in

the Holy Land who will be displaying

handcrafted olive wood religious figu-

rines and articles.

Due to the political conflict and the reduction of tourism, the Catholic

Community has come to depend more on the sale of these articles

abroad to survive. The woodcarvings are beautiful and reflect the faith

and love for the Lord. Please consider purchasing a gift that will be

remembered and cherished for yourself or someone dear to you, and

help our sisters and brothers in Christ to keep their Christian identity

and presence there. The handcrafted olive religious figurines and arti-

cles will be available for purchase after all masses.

RESPOND NOW

CHRISTMAS STORE

NEEDS YOUR HELP

For many years, the parishioners at

St. Joseph have donated toys and

gift cards to at least 1400 children

whose parents come to our Christ-

mas store. Respond Now is asking

again for you to please donate new

sports equipment and new toys

that you feel a child would enjoy

having.

Fr. Bob has again graciously given

us the weekends of Dec 7/8 and

Dec 14/15 for parishioners to drop

off new unwrapped gift toys for

children 2 to 13 years. Again, a

box will be provided in the back of

church. Stuffed animals are not

needed. New sports equipment as

well as toys displayed in local drug

stores would be appreciated. Gift

cards are especially welcomed for

teenagers.

The parishioners at St. Joseph

have been most caring when it

comes to helping those less fortu-

nate. For further information,

please contact Susan Perkins 708-

755-4357 or Marietta Burke 708-

798-3228.

PARISH FOOD DRIVE

FOR CATHOLIC CHARITIES'

SOUTH SUBURBAN PANTRY

DECEMBER 14 & 15

Now is the time for the Spirit of Christmas to fill all of our hearts. The

Parish Food Drive for Catholic Charities' South Suburban Pantry is

December 14 & 15 before all Masses. This food pantry serves 500

families a month—our neighbors, many people in the south suburbs

appreciating our generosity. Please help us answer their calls for

food by giving generously during this season of giving. All non-

perishable food items are needed. When you are shopping this week

pick up a few extra of whatever is on sale and bring it to church De-

cember 14 & 15. We will have a car (truck) in front of church before

all Masses to accept your generous donations, just pull up and we

will do the rest. Items can also be left in the cry room during the

prior week. If you have children, let them pick a few items and bring

them as their donation, they will feel the joy of giving to others too. If

you prefer to make a cash or check donation to South Suburban

Catholic Charities, just give it to the volunteer collecting the food. The

pantry greatly appreciates the generosity of St. Joseph parishioners.

St. Joseph Parish collection

for the Retirement Fund for

Religious will be next week-

end, December 14 & 15.

Gospel Mt 3:1-12 John the Baptist appeared, preaching in the desert of

Judea and saying, Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand!" It was of

him that the prophet Isaiah had spoken when he said: A voice of one crying

out in the desert, Prepare the way of the Lord, make straight his paths. John

wore clothing made of camel's hair and had a leather belt around his waist.

His food was locusts and wild honey. At that time Jerusalem, all Judea, and

the whole region around the Jordan were going out to him and were being

baptized by him in the Jordan River as they acknowledged their sins. When

he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to his baptism, he

said to them, "You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming

wrath? Produce good fruit as evidence of your repentance. And do not pre-

sume to say to yourselves, 'We have Abraham as our father.' For I tell you,

God can raise up children to Abraham from these stones. Even now the ax

lies at the root of the trees. Therefore every tree that does not bear good fruit

will be cut down and thrown into the fire. I am baptizing you with water, for

repentance, but the one who is coming after me is mightier than I. I am not

worthy to carry his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.

His winnowing fan is in his hand. He will clear his threshing floor and gather

his wheat into his barn, but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire."
