LONE STAR CONFERENCE

Long known as a leader in intercollegiate athlet-ics, the Lone Star Conference (LSC) is an inno-

vative athletics conference which aims to provide a superior competitive experience for member in-stitutions and to allow for comprehensive develop-ment of student-athletes through academic services and life skills programming. The LSC continues to build upon its proud history while intending to be recognized as the premier NCAA Division II con-ference in the nation. The league’s mission is to foster student partici-pation and success among member institutions in Division II intercollegiate athletics as an integral part of each institution’s total educational program. The LSC strives for academic excellence, stresses involvement within the community, and prides it-self in upholding traditions while continually seek-ing new opportunities to provide student-athletes with a unique and superior experience. The LSC - founded on April 25, 1931 - has developed from a five-team conference of Texas-based schools to an 11-member league that spans three states (Texas, Oklahoma and New Mexico). The conference membership recently changed with the departure of five Oklahoma schools following the 2010-11 academic year. The league continues to assist its member institutions in the maintenance of intercollegiate athletic programs that are com-patible with the highest standards of education and competitive sports. Throughout the league’s 80-year history, vari-ous institutions have competed under the LSC ban-

ner. Today, only Texas A&M University-Commerce (then East Texas State) remains from the original group that was formed in 1931 when North Texas State, Southwest Texas State, Sam Houston State and Stephen F. Austin withdrew from the old Texas Intercollegiate Athletic Association. The membership alignment has changed over the years, with current members having been added in each of the past six decades. Texas A&M-Kings-ville (formerly Texas A&I) joined in 1954, followed by Angelo State in 1968 and Abilene Christian in 1973. Conference membership remained within the Texas borders until 1984 when Eastern New Mexi-co was admitted. Since then, the LSC has grown to include members from Arkansas and Oklahoma.Cameron (1988, 1996) was added near the outset of an expansion phase, while Texas Woman’s (1989) and previous members West Texas A&M (1986, 1993) and Tarleton State (1968, 1994) joined the league soon after. Midwestern State was admitted early in 1995 and Harding and McMurry have been compeiting as provisional members for track and field since 2012. Past members of the LSC include Trinity, Hous-ton, Lamar, Howard Payne, Sul Ross State, McMur-ry, Harding, Ouachita Baptist, Central Oklahoma, East Central (Okla.), Northeastern State (Okla.), Southeastern Oklahoma, Southwestern Oklahoma, Abilene Christian (Texas) and University of Incar-nate Word (Texas) .

While the LSC has maintained a long-standing tradition of competitive athletic programs for its members, many teams and individuals have gone on to distinguish themselves on the national stage. Entering 2011-12, LSC member institutions have collected 74 NCAA national championships since the league joined the Division II membership in 1982. Abilene Christian supplied the most recent additions to that total, capturing both the men’s indoor and outdoor track and field championships this past year. The LSC conducts conference championships in 14 sports (six men and eight women). Men’s championships include football, soccer, cross country, basketball, baseball, track and field and golf. Women’s titles are determined in volleyball, soccer, cross country, basketball, softball, track and field, tennis and golf. The conference office is located in Richardson, Texas, a northern suburb of Dallas. Stan Wagnon serves as Commissioner, with assistance from Jay Poerner (Compliance), Melanie Robotham (Media Relations) and Tommy Wright (Corporate Sales and Marketing).

facility

MEMORIAL STADIUMCommerce, Texas

Memorial Stadium began as a project of the Ex-Students Association in the fall of 1945. The ESA and friends of the University raised a portion of the funds before East Texas State Teachers College received a state appro-priation for the rest of the $300,000 to build the facility.

Construction on the facility was started in the fall of 1949 and work continued fast and furious to have the stadium ready for the start of the 1950 season.

The seating has been altered only slightly over the last five decades. In 1973, alumninum seating, the Presi-dent’s Box under the Press Box and the T-Lounge at the south end of the stadium were added. A rubberized all-weather track replaced the cinders in 1980. In 1987, a ticket booth was constructed in the main entry and new light fixtures were installed in 1999.

Prior to the 2006 season, the stadium went through its most extensive renovations since being built in 1949. A new scoreboard and playing surface, as well as a new track was installed at the conclusion of the football season. In 2009, a new building housing a football locker room and training room was constructed at the north end of the stadium to replace the T-Lounge.

Before the 2013 football season new turf, along with a 50 yard long midfield Lion logo was installed. The renovation of Memorial Stadium also included a resurfacing of the track in time for this season.

COVERING THE LIONS

Media efforts for all 11 Texas A&M University-Commerce sports are coordinated by Rand Champion, the Lions’ Director of Media and

Public Relations. A&M-Commerce’s Media Relations office is located on the second floor of the Field House, directly east of Memorial Stadium.

CREDENTIALSCredentials are issued to working members of the media only. Credential requests must be made at least 24 hours prior to the game by contacting Rand Champion via e-mail. Working media can pick up their game day credentials at the media will call, located at the main ticket office on the east side of the Field House.

A&M-COMMERCE FIELD HOUSE PRESS ROWPress row at the A&M-Commerce Field House is located on the west side of the court, with seating preference given to those who cover the Lions on a regular basis. Overflow media seating is available in the stands behind press row. Programs, rosters and game notes will be available an hour prior to the start of the game with halftime stats and final stat packets distributed to working media as well. Should media need a place to work for an ex-tended period after the game, the media relations office is open to working media and is located on the second floor of the Field House.

INTERVIEWSAll interview requests with Texas A&M University-Commerce coaches and student-athletes must be coordinated through the Media Relations office and must be arranged 24 hours prior. Student-athletes are told not to conduct any interviews unless it has been previously arranged through the Media Relations office. No interviews will be conducted on travel or game days.

PHOTOGRAPHERSAll photographers must have a credential visible at all times. NCAA rules prohibit photographers from being in the team areas and should not in-terfere with play. Photographers are allowed to shoot in the stands as long as they do not interfere with fans trying to watch the game. Use of tripods is prohibited. Photographers may use seats on press row as a work area if space permits.

POST-GAME INTERVIEWSFollowing a 10-minute cooling off period, Texas A&M University-Com-merce head coach Nicole Anderson and selected players will be made available to the media outside the A&M-Commerce locker room, located on the east side of the Field House following radio obligations with KETR 88.9 FM. Media members should let Rand Champion know which players they would like made available at the conclusion of the game. The A&M-Commerce locker room is closed to the media.

PARKINGParking is free for all spectators and media and is located south of the A&M-Commerce Field House and around Memorial Stadium.
