Withtheindoorseasonalreadyofftoarecord-breakingstartand34letterwinnersreturning,SoutheasternheadcoachSeanBradyislookingforbigthingsoutoftheLionsandLadyLionsin2016 .

Amongthose34returningarethreereign-ingAll-Americans(seniorsJermishaFrazier,JonathanKinchenandAlexanderYoung),the2015LouisianaandSouthlandConferenceNewcomeroftheYear(Young),the2015LouisianaFreshmanoftheYear(DevinKing),seven2015All-Louisianaselections,threeSouthlandConferenceoutdoorandoneindoorchampionsandnineoutdoorandfiveindoorAll-SLCselections .

AddinasolidclassoffreshmanandjuniorcollegetransferswhohavealreadymadetheirmarkandBradyknowsbothhissquadshavethepotentialmakearunintheSouthlandthisseason .

“Ourmenandwomenhavetocontinuetoencourageeachotherandifwearegoingtobeachampionshipteam,wehavetogrowandmatureandournewpeoplehavetoconnectwiththeteammembershereandtheyhavetoembracethoseguys,”Bradysaid .“Iftheydothatandwegetonaroll,Ithinkwehaveareallygoodshotatwinningthemen’schampionship .

“Withthewomen,Ithinkwehaveanopportunitytobeasgoodaswe’veeverbeen .Ifwefinishinthetophalfoftheconference,that’sgoingtobeawinbutIthinkthisteamiscapableofdoingbetterthanthat .Fourthorfifthiscertainlywithinthegraspandifwehaveagreatdayandeverybodyhitsontherightday,wecouldbeatopthreeteam .”

TheSoutheasternmenclosedouttheindoorregularseasonrankedNo .13intheUnitedStatesTrack&FieldandCrossCountryCoachesAssociation’sNationalTeamComputerRankingsandsixhintheSouthCentralRegional .

BoththeLionsandLadyLionsarestronginthethrowingevents .Youngreturnsafterearningsecond-teamAll-Americahonorsafterplacing10thinthehammerthrowattheNCAAOutdoorChampionships .HewasalsotheSouthlandoutdoorchampionintheshotputandtheindoorchampionintheweightthrow .Hehasopenedtheindoorseasonwithfivewinswhilesettingtheschoolindoorrecordintheweightthrow .

Kinchenalsoreceivedsecond-teamAll-Americahonorsaftertaking14thintheham-meratNationals .HewontheSLCoutdoortitleinthehammerandplacedfourthintheshotputwhilefinishingsecondinthehammerandfifthintheshotintheindoorchampion-

ships .Hehasapairofweightthrowwinsalreadythisindoorseason .

ThosetwoarejoinedbyfellowseniorJimmyLeBlanc,whoreceivedthird-teamAll-SLCintheshotputwhilefinishingfourthinthehammerand15thinthediscusattheoutdoormeet .Hewasalsofifthintheweightthrowandattheconferenceindoorchampi-onships .

Onthewomen’sside,Frazier,theschool’soutdoorrecordholderintheshotput,dis-cusandhammer,wasanhonorablementionAll-Americaselectionaftertaking17thinthehammer .Shecapturedtheoutdoorconferencetitleintheshotputwhileplacingsecondintheeventattheindoorchampionships .Frazieropenedthe2016indoorseasonwheresheleftofftheoutdoor,breakingherownweightthrowrecordattheseason-openingLSUPurpleTigerInvitational .ShealsoownstheLadyLions’indoorshotputrecord .

Kingalsoopenedtheindoorseasoninrecord-breakingstyle,eclipsingtheschool’spolevaultmarkineachofhisfirsttwomeets .Hehadclosedoutthe2015outdoorregularseasonwiththreestraightwinsandtook18thattheNCAAEastPreliminaries .

TheLionshavealreadyshowedtheyaregoingtobemuchstrongerinsomeareasthantheywerein2015 .JuniorStevenBarze,atransferfromSouthPlainsJuniorCollege,shatteredtheschool’slong-standingindoorlongjumpmarkonhisfirstattemptasaLionandwasnamedtheUSTFCCCA’sNationalAthleteoftheWeekforthefirstweekoftheindoorseason .

SeniorAndreColebrook,whojoinedtheLionsfortheoutdoorseasonin2015,broketheschool’s800-metermarkattheLSUBayouBengalInvitationalwhilejuniorDontrellLyonsshatteredthe400markattheUNMCherry&SilverInvitational .The4x400relayhastwicebrokentheschoolrecordwhilethe4x800setanewstandardatthePurpleTiger .

“Onthemen’sside,wehavegotsomevet-eranswhoarehere,guysthatarejuniorsandseniors,”saidBradyoftheLionswhowontheteamcompetitionattheCherry&Silver . .“That’sthestrengthofourteamandthat’sacrosstheboard .Lastyeargoingintotheindoorseason,ourthrowswerereallydeepanditwasayearwhensomeoftheotherteamsweredowninthateventarea .

“Thisyear,thethrowsaregoingtobebet-teracrosstheboard .InthisconferencepeopleseeholesandgapsandtheystartrecruitingtothoseweaknessesandIseeandhearfromtheothercoachesit’sgoingtobealotmore

competitiveinthoseareas .However,wearegoingtobemuchmorecompetitiveinsomeotherareas .We’vegoneoutandrecruitedtoourneeds .”

Bradysaidthewomen’steamhasalsoimprovedagreatdeal,especiallyregardingdepth .Thatdepthhasbeenevidentearly,espe-ciallyinthesprintsandpolevault .TheLadyLionshadfourofthetopsixfinishersinthe400attheBayouBengal,includingavictorybyseniorDomoniqueWhite .Whitewasalsopartofaquartetinthetopseveninthe200atthePurpleTiger,agrouphighlightedbyawinbyseniorNakiyaSmith .

TheLadyLions’4x400and4x800relaysbothhadtopfivefinishesintheopeningmeets .SophomoreClarrisaSmithandjuniorJennaHildebrandhadtop-10finishesinthemile .

SeniorSharron-AnnOursoandjuniorWhitneyAdamswentone-twointhepolevaultattheBayouBengalwhilethatpairplusseniorAddisonMartinez(third)placedinthetopthreeatthePurpleTigerandtheMcNeeseIndoor .

OtherLadyLionshavingstrongstartstotheseasonwerejuniorCydneyMoreauinthelongjump,juniorRaevenScottandfreshmanShekiraPriceinthehighjump,freshmanJaslynBowmaninthe200,juniorLekeshaJelksinthe800andfreshmanTaylaCelestineinthe60-meterhurdles .

“Onthewomen’sside,we’reayoungteam,”Bradysaid .“WesignedseveralyoungwomenwhowerestatechampionsandonthebestteamsinLouisiana .Ihavetogive(assistant)coach(Corey)Mistrettaasrecruitingcoor-dinatorwhoreallycameinandhustledandsignedtwoorthree .Ifwecan15pointsorbetterfromMishaattheconferencemeetandthenhavetheotherwomeninthesprints,theshortsprints,longsprintsandrelays,we’regoingtobecompetitive .”

BradyexpectstheSouthlandConferenceChampionshipstoagainbecompetitivethisseasonandsaiditcouldcomedowntowhichprogramsbesthandlethemomentumandemotionalswingsofthedayofthemeet,

“Inthissport,youneverknowhowit’sgoingtofallout,”Bradysaid .“Whenyouhave13teamscompetingatonetime,differenteventareasarestronger .Somepeoplewinandmoveuptwospotsandknockpeopledown .

“Withtheebbandflowoftheconferencemeetyouhavetobereadyonthedayandwedoareallygoodjobofpreparingourkidsandgettingthemreadyontheday .Ifwestayhealthy,growasateam,staycompetitiveforthenextfewweeks,Ilikeourchances .”

Track & Field ComplexAftermanyyearsinStrawberryStadium,the

Lion and Lady Lion track and field teamsmoved toanew facility in2012 .Thenew

venue includes coaches’ offices and team lockerroomsthatgiveeachteamsomeofthefinestfacilitesintheSouthlandConference .

TheLionsandLadyLionshostedtheirfirsttrackmeetinoveradecadeonApril20,2012,whentheywelcomedin-stateandSouthlandConferenceteamsfortheSoutheasternLionInvitational .

The facility hosted the Southland ConferenceOutdoorChampionshipsinMay,2015 .

FACILITY SPeCIFICSThe track is a brand new Beynon surface with

encapsulatedgranules .Therearefourlongjumppitsrunningnorth-south,twoshotputcirclesandimpactareas,alongwithseatingfor1200 .

SUCCeSS AT STRAWBeRRY Prior to 2012, Southeastern track& field shared

Strawberry Stadiumwith theLion football programand it was home to several NAIA and NCAAOutdoorChampionsinthemid-to-late1970s .

NCAA INFRACTION NOTICEOn December 10, 2013, the National Collegiate AthleticAssociationDivisionICommitteeonInfractionshasaccept-ed summary disposition of the infractions case originallyself-reported by Southeastern Louisiana University almostoneyearago, largelyagreeing to thepenalties self-imposedbytheuniversity .As a result of an extensive self-investigation, the universityself-reportedtotheNCAAthat137student-athletescom-petedwithoutmeetingeligibilityrequirementsbetweentheacademic years of 2005-2006 through 2009-2010, with amajorityoftheviolationsoccurringin2005-2006and2006-2007 .Mostof thestudent-athletes failedtomeetacademiceligibilityrequirementstocompeteunderNCAArules .86percentofthestudent-athletesidentifiedinthecasewenton to graduate fromSoutheasternor left the university ingoodacademicstanding .Athleticsstaffmembersresponsiblefor academic advising and eligibility certification during thetime of the violations are no longer associated with theuniversity . No current student-athlete at Southeastern par-ticipatedwhileineligible .Southeastern self-imposed penalties include vacating victo-riesinwhichineligiblestudent-athletesparticipated,scholar-ship reductions, and impositionof a two-yearprobationaryperiod .The NCAA extended the probationary period tofour years and ordered Southeastern to pay a financialpenaltyof$25,000 .Theprobationtermsdonotincludeanypostseasonbans .Following identificationof the infractions, Southeasternhasimplemented corrective actions that include the appoint-ment of an assistant to the president for athletics compli-ance, the addition of a new compliance coordinator, theimplementationofacademictrackingsoftwaretostrengthenthecertificationprocessandstreamlinemonitoring,changesin the eligibility certification process to include oversightby institutional offices outside the Athletics Department,enhanced rules training of athletics coaches and staff, andimplementation of new procedures to improve academicadvisingofstudent-athletes .“We are pleased to put resolution of this case behind us .These infractionsoccurred years ago, and current coaches,staffandadministrationareabsolutelycommittedtoongoingcompliancewithallNCAArules,”statedAthleticsDirectorJayArtigues .

On April 9, 2015, The NCAA Committee on Infractionsfinalized an infractions case for violations stemming fromJune to July 2013 .As a result of the case, Southeastern’sprobationperiodhasbeenextendedforoneyear,endingonDecember9,2018 .

Southeastern self-repoted that a former volleyball coachhadengagedinimpermissibleathletically-relatedactivityandimpermissible lodging and tryouts for prospective student-athletes .

“Southeastern Louisiana University received final confirma-tion by the NCAA Infractions Committee that stemmedfrom self-reported violations related to recruiting andpractice irregularities in the university’s women’s volleyballprogram during the spring and summer 2013,” Artiguessaid .“Theuniversity self-reported the fiveviolations to theNCAA following a thorough internal investigation, whichled to the resignation of the then-HeadVolleyball Coach .Southeastern has accepted the penalties and correctiveactionsimposedbytheNCAA .“Our athletics program is committed to complete compli-ance with all NCAA rules and legislation,”Artigues added .“Intentionaldisregardforthisresponsibilitywillbedealtwithfirmlyandswiftly .”
