A Simple Formula for Success, in Sport, in Life

It's all about respect. Respect for the sport. Respect for the student-athlete. Respect for the university they rep-resent, and the community in which they live. It's a very big picture approach to track and field at NorthwesternState. The NSU track and field coaching staff is anchored by one of the icons of collegiate track, Demon headcoach Leon Johnson, a man legendary among his peers and beloved by his colleagues and athletes. It's a familyatmosphere, with everybody getting equal billing and pulling equal weight. The coaching team compiles of someof the brightest young coaches anywhere to provide NSU's athletes with the finest technical knowledge present-ed in a nurturing, positive teaching environment. It's about respect, after all. And continually striving to be bet-ter than you were yesterday, as an athlete, as a student, as a person.

2009 Demon Preview

The Northwestern State men's trackand field team for 2009 will remind you ofthe Southland Conference championshipteams that coach Leon Johnson has field-ed in his epic career as the Demons' men-tor.

Two hallmarks of conference successand national prominence for NSU havebeen excellence in the throwing events andsprint and relay strength. Those eventsshould be at the forefront of the story of the2009 Demons, who are still a young teamoverall, with only four seniors and four jun-iors.

The impact of the almost new Mondotrack surface at the Walter Ledet TrackComplex has been obvious in its appeal tosprinters and jumpers in the recruitingprocess. It's also been obvious in the fasttimes and big improvements for jumperscompeting in NSU's home meets.

While new faces and sophomores willhave plenty of impact this season, a lot ofthe headlines will feature three seniorthrowers - Cody Fillinich, Daniel Yarbroughand Corey Jones.

Fillinich can become the first four-timeNCAA Division I Outdoor All-America in

school history. He comes out of a redshirtyear in the javelin owning a 237-2 PR andsure to rank among the nation's best aftera fourth-place finish at the 2007 NCAAChampionships, and a year of training andrefinement.

Yarbrough will probably top his schoolrecord in the hammer throw (186-5) andagain reach the NCAA Mideast Regionals, perhaps also getting to regionals in the dis-cus. Jones, coming out of a redshirt sea-son, will be a contender for the SouthlandConference shot put and discus titles andhopes to return to the regional champi-onships for the first time since 2005.

The other senior is returning AcademicAll-SLC runner Chris Pearson, who was analternate on the NCAA Mideast Regionalqualifying 4x400 relay team and appearspoised to repeat as a scorer in the 800 atthe SLC Championships.

Juniors Mike Green, Mike Hill andMichael Batts have more in common thantheir first names. They all could emerge asregional qualifiers and will challenge forconference titles. Green and Batts aresprinters who will be keys on the 4x400relay team that seeks to return to the

regionals and improve on a second-placefinish at the SLC Championships. Theyalso could contribute in the 200. Hill hasmade great strides in the 110 meter hur-dles and could sparkle in that event whilealso remaining an option for the shortsprints and 4x100 relay.

Also primed to factor into the relays andsprints are sophomores Jamie Emery andJeremy Thomas (sixth in the 400, in 47.43last year, at the SLC meet).

NSU expects steady improvement fromsophomore jumpers Christopher Oyeku(LJ, TJ), Kennis Byars (HJ) and Greg Hall(HJ), hoping they can score at the SLCOutdoors.

Impact newcomers could include hur-dler P.J. Bennett, horizontal jumpersBradford Matthews and Calvin Smith, throwers Morgan Redmond and BuckThompson, and sprinters Calvin Stokerand D.J. Sellers.

2009 Lady Demon Preview

nsudemons.com • 2009 Northwestern State Demon Track and Field Media Guide

There's a brighter forecast for the 2009outdoor season for the NSU Lady Demontrack and field team even without the mostdominant member of last year's team,Trecey Rew, because there's an abun-dance of young talent on the track.

Rew is out this year on a medical red-shirt after a foot injury suffered in training. An Academic All-Southland Conferenceselection, she won the SLC Indoor shot puttitle, the SLC Outdoor discus crown, andwas NCAA Regional qualifier in bothevents while setting school records in both. With Rew sidelined, that's a big blow toNSU's scoring potential at the conferencechampionships.

But there are some exciting freshmenthrowers who will partially compensate forher loss, along with returning veteranthrower DeJon Griffin, and an excitingsprint crew who give head coach MikeHeimerman cause for optimism.

The gaggle of youth on the LadyDemons team results from interest inrecruits wanting to train and compete onone of the fastest surfaces in the country, the world-class Mondo track at the LedetComplex.

The NSU women have just two seniors, sprinter Samantha Flowers and hurdlerShanae Steward. Flowers will contributeon the 4x100 relay and Steward will be oneof the most unique stories in college athlet-ics.

Steward has been an NCAA Regionalqualifier in the 110m hurdles, has won theSLC Indoor 60m hurdles title, and hasbeen a triple jumper. Her training schedulewas greatly curtailed last year when sheadvanced to junior status in nursingschool. Now she's actually working as afull-time nurse in Shreveport Mondaythrough Wednesday, then coming back tocampus to train and compete later eachweek, and completing class work along theway.

Junior Jessica Tuck was a 2008 NCAARegional qualifier (LJ) and is a contributorin the short sprints and 4x100 relay. Shescored in the long jump last year at theSLC Outdoors, going 19-0 1/2, despite aknee injury that hampered her in the laststages of the 2008 season after posting a19-11 1/2 mark.

Junior Anna Forest is the team's topsprinter. She ranks among the Southland'stop 100 meter runners and is the anchor on

the 4x100 relay team that is among thebest in the league and a threat to make theNCAA Regionals.

Jazmen Williams (100, 200), WhineySmith (100, 200) and Forest (200) all post-ed PR's at last spring's SLCChampionships. They were part of thethird-place 4x100 team at the conferenceoutdoor meet (45.89) along with AmandaFreeman.

Sophomore Andrea Warren seemsprimed to develop into a strong 800 meterrunner and a key on the 4x400 relay team.Versatile Phyllis Iheanacho is also a mid-dle-distance contributor who fits on the4x400 unit.

Newcomer Carmen Wallace moved outfrom the basketball court to the track andhas developed into a fine 400 sprinter andis progressing nicely in the 400m hurdles, where she could earn points for NSU at theSLC Championships.

Freshmen Leslie Jordan and ChantelBratton in the throws could lessen theimpact of Rew being sidelined.

Veteran Courtney Herschberger couldearn points for NSU in the 3000m steeple-chase.

Leon JohnsonHead Coach

27th Season

The phrase "legendary" gets tossedaround too easily when discussing athleticpersonalities, but nobody who's competedfor, worked with, or competed against LeonJohnson would disagree that he'sapproaching legendary status as a trackand field coach.

As he enters his 27th season incharge of track and field at NorthwesternState, he retains the same joy for coach-ing and teaching, the same burning com-petitive drive to excel and the same humbleand diligent approach to every day.

Those who are called "legends" intheir chosen field always carry with them apassion for what they do, and they consis-tently achieve at a level that exceeds thegrandest expectations.

So it is with Johnson, whose stature isalready "legendary" in Louisiana HighSchool track and field circles, and in colle-giate track and field, he's an icon amonghis peers across the nation.

When disagreement erupted at the2005 NCAA Mideast RegionalChampionships over how to restart therain-delayed competition in the 200, a roomfull of coaches and NCAA officials quicklyturned to hear Johnson's perspective.

At Southland Conference champi-onship events over the past 10+ years, league and meet officials have alwayssought Johnson's counsel on rules andadministrative issues.

The Louisiana High School AthleticAssociation has been holding its all-classi-fications state cross country champi-onships at Northwestern for more than adecade, relying on Johnson and his staff forsmooth management of a massive eventinvolving thousands of competitors fromevery corner of the state. In January, theLHSAA gave him its “Distinguished ServiceAward.”

In each of the past three OlympicGames, one of Johnson's athletes hascompeted for Team USA -- both triplejumpers, LaMark Carter in the 2000Sydney Games and Kenta Bell in the 2004Athens Games, and the 2008 BeijingOlympic Games.

Johnson's son, Dean, who has spentmore than 16 seasons working under hisfather after competing for him at NSU, istoday regarded by USA Track and Field asone of the nation's bright horizontal jumpscoaches -- a chip off the old block.

Johnson also tutored Lady Demonhead coach Mike Heimerman, who alsocompeted for the Demons in the mid-1990s

in the shot and discus. Heimerman hasemerged as one of the country's top youngthrows coaches, taking javelin competitorsto NCAA national championships in nine ofthe last 10 years -- all of those competitorscoming from Louisiana, winning six All-America honors.

Speaking of All-Americans, Johnsonhas produced 46 in his 26 seasons ascoach. In track and field, there's no subjec-tivity -- that honor is earned by placementat the national meet, measured againstevery Division I competitor in the country ineach event.

In his fifth decade of coaching,Johnson still brings a youthful energy toeach day. Watching him at practice or in acompetition, he is constantly in motion, offering encouragement, motivation andtechnical advice to his athletes.

He is, as well, part of the heart andsoul of the Northwestern athletic depart-ment, which is enjoying perhaps its mostsustained stretch of across-the-board suc-cess in school history, based on the num-ber of Southland Conference champi-

onships and NCAA postseason appear-ances by teams in the past decade.Athletic director Greg Burke attributes asignificant share of the credit to Johnson, whose persona has made him a role modelto coaches and staff in every sport duringthe past decade.

Basketball coach Mike McConathyinvited Johnson along with the team on a2006 trip to Hawaii as a token of admirationfor his mentorship, friendship, selflessnessand loyalty – qualities that can’t be takenfor granted in today’s environment.

Whether or not the word "legendary"fits him yet (and he wouldn’t accept thatidea), there's been no doubt for years that"unselfish" does, along with the descriptionas "a team player" and a "caring colleagueand coach."

He's won a wall full of Coach of theYear honors in the longest tenure of anytrack coach in Northwestern sports history.Johnson has become the dean of track andfield coaches at Northwestern and in thestate of Louisiana. During those years, hehas not only continued, but enhanced thereputation of NSU as a program that hasremained remarkably competitive national-ly, standing the test of time.

Johnson has coached NSU to Top 20finishes in both the indoor and outdoorNCAA Division I Championships.

He has led the Demons to nine confer-ence championships and been named con-ference Coach of the Year eight times. As aprep coach, he was named state Coach ofthe Year three times.

He's served as meet referee for theprestigious Oklahoman Daily ClassicIndoor Meet and served on the NCAAChampionships Throws Jury.

At Northwestern, he started the LadyDemon track and field program. In 1999,Johnson was inducted in the Graduate NClub Hall of Fame in tribute to his accom-plishments and dedication to NSU and itstrack and field program.

For 16 consecutive seasons from1989-2005, the Demons finished in the tophalf of the men’s team standings at theSouthland Conference Outdoors. For 10straight years, 1996-2005, Northwesternwas the top scoring Louisiana team in theSLC men’s standings. After Johnson has

shaped a tremendous recruiting class in2008 and 2009, the Demons look ready toreturn to form.

Prior to being appointed head coachat NSU in the fall of 1982, Johnsoncoached at DeRidder High School. Whilethere, he won the Louisiana Class AAAstate title and was named the high schooltrack and field coach of the year in 1982.During this stint, he twice led the Dragonsto second place finishes in the state crosscountry competition.

Before going to DeRidder, Johnsoncoached at Opelousas High School from1965 until 1974 where he established a tra-dition of dominant track and field teamswhich still exists today. After beingappointed as head coach in 1970,Johnson's Opelousas teams dominated theClass AAAA state ranks like no other teamin Louisiana, winning state titles in 1971and 1972 and finishing as state runners-upin 1973 and 1974. During this time periodJohnson worked with legendary coachClaude Paxton who coached 1972 Olympicgold medalist Rodney Milburn at Southern.

Johnson began his career at GrandValley (CO) High School on the westernslope of the Rocky Mountains where hecoached cross country, basketball andtrack for two years. His stay was highlight-

ed by a fourth place finish in the state bas-ketball tournament during his first cam-paign.

A devotee of the sport, Johnson con-tinues to be a source of information formany high school coaches who consultwith him on an individual basis. Johnsonwas one of the first coaches to becomeLevel I and Level II certified by USA Trackand Field in the Sprints, Hurdles andRelays.

A native of Elmore City, Oklahoma,Johnson graduated from the University ofSouthwestern Louisiana where he was adistance runner on the cross country andtrack teams and also went out for football. In 1971 he returned to earn his master's insecondary education.

He is married to the former ElaineWaters of Lafayette with whom he has fourchildren: sons Dean and Kendon anddaughters Darla and Molly. He is a proudgrandfather, a member of the Church ofChrist and a devoted volunteer for theSpecial Olympics and several other chari-ties.

Mike Heimerman’s technical expertiseand passion for coaching have been keyattributes in his rapid rise among the brightyoung faces in collegiate track and fieldcoaching circles.

They combine with his love for hisalma mater and his tremendous work ethic, among other qualities, to result in his beingnamed head women’s track and field coachat Northwestern State in August 2007.

Six of NSU’s last seven All-Americaawards have been won by Heimerman-trained competitors. He’s coached 13 ath-letes who have reached the NCAA OutdoorChampionships. In the last three years, nine javelin throwers (three in 2007) sur-passed the NCAA Regional qualilfyingstandard.

When Cody Fillinich won his third All-America award in as many years at the2007 NCAA meet, it was also the ninth timein 10 years that Northwestern had either amale or a female javelin thrower reach theNCAA Outdoors. All of the athletes havebeen Louisiana prep products and four pre-viously — Regina Roe, Latrell Frederick,Samantha Ford and Fillinich— won All-America honors by virtue of their perform-ances at the national meet.

Ford reached the 12-woman USAOlympic Trials Finals in 2008.

Heimerman also helped freshmanTrecey Rew achieve national prominencein 2007. She qualified in two events for theUSA Junior Nationals and made the USAT-FCCA (coaches’ association) All-AcademicTeam. Rew has broken school records in

the shot and discus and won conferencetitles in both events.

Last year, among the nine NCAARegional qualifiers from Northwestern, fivewere throwers. In his first year as headwomen’s coach, Heimerman had fourregional qualifiers.

It’s not just technical knowledge thatmakes Heimerman a great coach – it’s hiscompetitive fire and his ablilty to instill thatquality in his athletes.

After capping his competitive careerwith an eighth-place finish at the 1998 USAOutdoor Championships in the shot put,Heimerman emerged as a highly regardedthrows coach who has made a majorimpact on NSU track andfield history.

The 1996 SouthlandConference Outdoorchampion in the shot put,Heimerman is creditedwith significantly shapingthe record-shatteringcareers of two-timeDemon All-AmericanLatrell Frederick, fifth atthe 2000 and 2001 NCAAChampionships in thejavelin and the 1999 USAJunior Champion; 2003javelin All-AmericanSamantha Ford andUSATF Junior All-America javelin throwersDawn Comeaux (2004)and Randy Fauntleroy(2006).

Heavy scoring in theshot put helped the 2001Demons win the SLCIndoor title. Big pointtotals in the shot andjavelin spearheaded thedrive to the 2002 SLCOutdoor crown for theNSU men.

He’s also been

instrumental in helping produce NSU’s first-ever men’s freshman All-American inFillinich, who earned All-America honorsafter placing 10th at the 2005 NCAAChampionships. Northwestern State graduate Joe Moreau, whose teams won six Louisiana High School Athletic Association state champi-onships in track and field and cross country, is in his second year as part of the NSU coaching staff as a volunteer assistant.

Moreau retired in 2008 as principal at Alexandria Senior High, where he began his coaching career in 1976 after gettinghis undergraduate degree from Northwestern. He since earned his master’s in education (1980), his +30 (1982) and a degreein principalship (1996) from NSU.

He coached at Bolton High from 1980-85, then moved across the Red River to Pineville, where he built a dynasty from1985-95. He took the helm at ASH in 1995 and coached there until taking the NSU post. He also previously was a graduate

assistant coach at NSU from 1984-85, working with Leon Johnson while Dean Johnson was a student-athlete.Moreau’s teams won the Class 4A state titles in cross country in 1990, 1991, 1992 and 1993 and were Class 4A runner-ups (both boys and

girls) in 1994-97. His Pineville team won the state track and field titles in 1993 and 1994, and then his next two teams were state runner-ups. His teams won 10 regional I-4A championships, and 11 district titles, in track, while capturing 14 district cross country crowns. He coached 17

In January, the Louisiana Track and Field Coaches Association presented him with its “Lifetime Achievement Award.”He is married to a fellow 1976 NSU graduate, the former Janice Barrios, and they celebrate their 31st anniversary on March 18.

Among the nation’s most highly regarded horizontal jumps coaches, Dean Johnson is in his second season back on the trackand field staff at his alma mater.

Head women’s track and field coach for nine seasons, Johnson left the NSU staff after the 2003 season to take a teaching andcoaching position at adjacent Natchitoches Central High School, where three of his five daughters were attending. He remainsa teacher at NCHS, having seen a fourth daughter reach high school.

He is the son of venerable head men’s track and field coach Leon Johnson, and while he’s worked with his father for mostof the past two decades since competing for him, Dean has risen from the formidable shadow of his dad’s accomplishments and

forged a name for himself in the sport.Coaching two Olympic triple jumpers will do that for you – USA team members LaMark Carter in 2000 and Kenta Bell in 2004 and 2008. Bell told

reporters after qualifying for his second Olympics that in his training, he uses the strategy “WWDD” -- “what would Dean do?”Johnson’s expertise helped the NSU men win seven Southland Conference titles from 1992-2002 while he worked with the heavy-scoring jump

stable for the Demons. As head women’s coach, he guided Lady Demon teams to their best-ever point totals in Southland Conference championship competition – 112

for third place, best in school history, in 1997; 84 points (fourth place) in 1998; and 108 points for third place in 1999. The 2000 squad was also thirdplace, scoring 97 points.

Johnson has earned national recognition through USA Track and Field. He was certified as a Level Two Coach in the sprints, hurdles and relaysin 1988 and in 1994 received Level Two certification in the multi-events. He has also been part of a select group of jump coaches invited to attendUSA Track and Field’s elite jumps seminars for long and triple jumpers, and has spoken to state coaching clinics in Louisiana and Missouri.

Walter P. Ledet Track Complex

The Northwestern State track team competed on a cinder oval in old Demon (Football) Stadium until the early 1970s, when the stadium underwent major renovations.A new facility exclusively for track and field was constructed adjacent to the football stadium and opened in 1977. The track was resurfaced in 1987 and 1995, butdrainage problems near the third turn resulted in damage that prevented its use for home meets from 2002-06, although NSU was able to train at the track for all butone fall. The facility underwent a redesign, relocating some event venues and enhancing others, with installation of a world-class track, and reopened for competitionfor the 2007 season. The complex is named after legendary NSU athlete and coach Walter Ledet. Ledet was the first All-American athlete in the history ofNorthwestern State University, making the All-American football team in 1938. After his graduation, he became an assistant football and track coach, then was namedthe head track coach in 1952 and built a program which dominated the state for more than a decade. He guided the Demons to five straight Gulf States Conferencechamionships from 1953-57. He retired as track coach in 1964. He was among the inaugural class of inductees for the Graduate ‘N’ Club Hall of Fame and was elect-ed to the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame in 1995. He was also selected as a member of the NSU Top 100 Football Players of the Century this past fall.

Marking the 25th anniversary of Northwestern State's 1981 NCAA 4x100 meter relay victo-ry, coach Jerry Dyes and the four All-American sprinters on the fabled team were enshrinedon Oct. 28, 2006 in the Graduate N Club Hall of Fame, the highest honor Northwesternaffords its former athletes and coaches. Pictured, left to right, are Dyes, Mark Duper, VictorOatis, Carolyn Delaney, widow of Joe Delaney, and Mario Johnson. In the 1981 race, theDemons were an obvious crowd favorite, lining up against Georgia, Tennessee, ArizonaState, San Jose State, Florida State, Arizona, Oklahoma State and Baylor in the final.

Dr. Randall J. WebbNorthwestern State President

When Dr. Randall J. Webb becameNorthwestern State University’s 17th president inJuly 1996, his objective was to make NSU thebest institution it could be. And in his 13th year onthe job, it is apparent Webb is achieving that goal.

Under his leadership, Northwestern was thefirst public college or university in Louisiana tohave 100 percent of its eligible academic pro-

grams nationally accredited.During Webb’s tenure, enrollment exceeded 10,000 students for the first

time, peaking at 10,505 students in the fall of 2004. The university also set arecord for total graduates in an academic year in 2005-06 and 2006-07.

With the implementation of selective admissions in the fall of 2005, theacademic preparation of freshmen students has increased considerably.Overall enrollment has decreased as a result for the past two years, but thestudent population should begin to move up again by 2010.

Northwestern has improved its academic programs while attracting betterstudents. The average ACT score of students has risen under Webb’s tenure.Student leaders are choosing NSU in large numbers. The university has dra-matically increased the number of high school valedictorians and salutatori-ans among first-time freshmen.

While Webb has been president, Northwestern has increased the level ofexternal funding for federal, state and private sources. The university hasraised more than $31 million from alumni, friends, supporters and privateindustry in its first-ever capital campaign, which exceeded its goal by morethan $12 million.

The university has received donations or pledges for its first three $1 mil-lion endowed chairs. Northwestern also has 34 endowed professorshipsworth $100,000 each.

NSU has also moved boldly to deliver instruction to students whereverthey are. Under Webb, the university has become a leader among state insti-tutions in bringing classes to students by compressed video and the Internet. The university offers nine degree programs via the Internet and is looking toadd more programs in the future. More than half of the students atNorthwestern take an electronic class.

Under Webb, the university has modernized and improved its facilities. A$6.9 million Wellness, Recreation, and Activity Center was completed in thecenter of the campus on the site of the old Intramural Building; projects torenovate Morrison Hall and the Family and Consumer Sciences Buildingwere also completed; and work on the remodeling of Williamson Hall and thedemolition and reconstruction of West Caspari Hall took place. Northwesternhas also built University Place, a new residence hall, and another new resi-dence hall on the site of Rapides Hall will open in the fall of 2008.

A one-time walk-on center for the Northwestern football team as an under-graduate, Webb has been one of the most avid supporters of the university’sathletic programs.

Since returning to the Northwestern campus in 1989, Webb has beenactive as a donor and volunteer. In 1994, he oversaw a successfulNorthwestern Athletic Association board of directors and served on the NSUAthletic Council. In 1995-1996, Webb was in charge of the Athletic IntegritySubcommittee for the university’s NCAA Certification Self-Study.

He served on the prestigious and powerful NCAA Executive Council, whichoversees all major policy decisions by the governing body for major collegesports.

A 1965 graduate of Northwestern in mathematics and business education,Webb earned a master of science in mathematics from NSU in 1966. Hereceived a doctorate in education from the University of Southern Mississippiin 1971 with a concentration in mathematics and research.

Webb was a member of the faculty at Longwood College in Farmville, Va.,from 1966 until 1974. From 1974 until 1976, Webb was the director of Higher

Education and Teacher Certification in the Louisiana Department ofEducation.

In 1976, Webb moved to Southeastern Louisiana University where heserved as director of institutional research and EEO officer from 1976 until1983 and registrar and a part-time faculty member in mathematics from 1983until 1989.

Webb returned to NSU in 1989 as dean of Instruction and GraduateStudies and professor ofmathematics. In that position,he exercised campus-wideresponsibility for policy devel-opment, planning, advance-ment, and review of both grad-uate and undergraduate pro-grams. While Webb was inthat role, graduate enrollmentincreased by 35 percent andinternal funding for facultyresearch increased by 200percent.

As dean, Webb proposedthe concept for NSU’s suc-cessful Freshman ConnectionProgram. He also served as amember of the writing team for a grant proposal that resulted in a five year$1.7 million Title III grant to improve student retention.

Webb chaired the Steering Committee for Northwestern's Self-Study forthe Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.

He has also been active in the community as a member of the board ofdirectors of the Natchitoches Chamber of Commerce. Webb was also amember of the Association for the Preservation of Historic Natchitoches, theNatchitoches Historic Foundation and the Natchitoches-NorthwesternSymphony Society.

Jerry Pierce is the Cal Ripken of the NorthwesternState athletic program.

Day after day, year after year, Pierce is in the lineup, fielding his position with aplomb, and delivering at the plate, knocking a ball out of the park from time to time but alwaystaking an understated profile, seeing himself as a role play-er.

Beginning his 43rd year on the university's staff, Pierce's impact on NSU and thecity of Natchitoches can't be measured as easily as Ripkin's Baseball Hall of Famestatistics, but they are equally indelible.

He begins his 18th year as vice president of external affairs at Northwestern. Asignificant aspect of his job is oversight of intercollegiate athletics. Pierce worksclosely with athletic director Greg Burke, associate AD Donnie Cox and all NSUcoaches and staff members to keep Northwestern athletics competing at a champi-onship level week after week, month after month and year after year.

Well before moving into the executive position, Pierce had already served hisalma mater, adopted hometown and state with distinction. In his role as vice presi-dent, he oversees university operations in athletics, alumni and development, pub-lic and media relations and assists President Dr. Randall J. Webb in governmentalaffairs activities. Many of those duties were his since the 1970s as he worked underfour previous presidents as Northwestern advanced from NAIA to NCAA CollegeDivision to NCAA Division I athletic status in 1977.

A 1961 graduate of Northwestern, Pierce served as trainer for the Demon foot-ball team during his college years, working closely with legendary coach JackClayton. After earning his journalism degree, Pierce went to work for the NewOrleans Times Picayune, serving as a reporter and editor. He was named execu-tive sports editor at the age of 24.

In 1965, he chose to raise his two sons in Natchitoches and returned to NSU assports information director. He was promoted to news bureau director two yearslater and assumed additional responsibilities in athletics, alumni affairs and otherareas through the years.

He founded, in 1972, the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame facility in PratherColiseum on the NSU campus, providing a home for an entity created in 1958. Heestablished annual induction activities that remain in place nearly four decadeslater, and served as director of the Hall for 19 years until his promotion to vice pres-ident forced him to step aside from the volunteer post.

He helped guide Northwestern into three athletic conferences (Trans America,1979; Gulf Star, 1983; Southland, 1987) and NCAA Division I status in 1977. He isa past president of the Southland and has served the conference through otheroffices and committee positions.

In 1994, he was named one of Louisiana's 20 most influential sports figures bythe Times-Picayune. Also on the list were New Orleans Saints owner Tom Benson,LSU athletic director Joe Dean and basketball coach Dale Brown, and Gramblingfootball coaching legend Eddie Robinson.

His salesmanship and managerial skills were instrumental in convincing Tri-StarProductions to film the 1989 smash hit movie Steel Magnolias, with an all-star castincluding Julia Roberts, Sally Field and Dylan McDermott in Natchitoches and onthe NSU campus. The movie's impact on tourism in Natchitoches continues to res-onate more than a decade later.

Pierce is regarded as one of the most effective legislative liaisons for Louisiana'shigher education system. He is also a popular after dinner speaker and master ofceremonies who has spoken at hundreds of events since 1965.

Pierce has been on regional champion and national finalist USTA tennis teamsas a player and coach.

Pierce and his wife Regina, a teacher, live on Cane River Lake in Natchitoches. He has two sons, Randy and Rick, both NSU graduates; and three grandchildren, twins Evan and Amanda, 19, and Miranda, 8, and two stepchildren, Nicholas andNatalie.

Now in his 13th year as director of athletics atNorthwestern State, Greg Burke has shown anamazing knack for maximizing resources, anastounding ability to be integrally involved in eachof NSU's athletic teams, and he's demonstrated aMidas touch in hiring coaches.

Athletics director at Northwestern since speak-ing at the annual NSU/Indepedence Bowl KickoffLuncheon on August 29, 1996, Burke has steered

NSU athletics to many of its greatest accomplishments while overseeing aprogram that has fielded championship caliber teams innearly all of the school's NCAA Division I sports.

There have been 22 Southland Conference champi-onships; 16 teams in postseason play; 47 national awardwinners, most either All-America athletes or Academic All-America recipients; and three Olympic competitors.

NSU in 2004-05 became the first (and remains the only)Southland Conference member in the league's five decadesof history to sweep football, men's basketball and baseballchampionships in the same athletic year. It's been done onlyonce in Southeastern Conference history, by Alabama in1933-34, and only four times in Big Ten Conference history, the last time by Michigan State in 1979-80.

Those accomplishments have come with one of themore modest athletic budgets in the state and conference.Burke's management skill and fundraising ability have beenpivotal.

Recently, Burke generated a $2 million series of spon-sorships for new scoreboards being installed for 2008-09 atall NSU athletic venues, along with a marquee for campus use. He spearhead-ed the $700,000 Second Century Circle fencing project for athletic venues and$100,000 of additional renovations to Turpin Stadium. In 2006, he also brokenew ground by generating private backing for the first long-term guaranteedcoaching contract in school history, for highly-successful basketball coachMike McConathy.

Burke has displayed a remarkable ability to hire dynamic head coaches, including several whose success at Northwestern State has propelled them tonational prominence in subsequent positions.

Some of his best hires remain on staff at NSU.Two Burke coaching hires had Northwestern in NCAA Tournament play in

their second seasons and have been back to postseason since.McConathy was hired in 1999 after 16 seasons as a junior college head

coach. In his nine years, the Demons have reached the conference tourna-ment championship game six times, winning twice to make the school's firsttwo NCAA Tournament appearances, winning a game each time (2001, 2006).

Women's soccer coach Jimmy Mitchell has taken three teams to the NCAAplayoffs, making NSU the only Louisiana university to have multiple appear-ances. Dramatic facility enhancements have occurred in his eight seasonsand Mitchell has been rewarded with a multi-year contract.

Burke also picked head coaches who have subsequently been hired byFlorida, Missouri, Kentucky, Mississippi State and Wichita State.

He recently landed LSU co-defensive coordinator Bradley Dale Peveto tobe the Demons' new football coach. Peveto and his staff promptly signed a2009 recruiting class ranked No. 1 nationally in the Football ChampionshipSubdivision by Rivals.com recruiting analysts.

Burke was tabbed as one of two Natchitoches Parish Cenla Newsmakersof 2005 by the Alexandria Town Talk newspaper's editorial staff.

The paper cited the men's basketball success, NCAA Tournament appear-ances by the baseball and women's soccer teams, while other achievementsincluded NSU leading the Southland Conference and all state public universi-ties in the NCAA's initial Academic Progress Rates report in February 2005measuring the job Division I athletic programs are doing helping advance theirstudent-athletes toward graduation. NSU again sparkled in the NCAA's annu-al APR reports, with the men's basketball team ranking in the top 10 percentilein the country in 2006 and women's soccer sharing the national lead in 2007,while football rated again among the state and SLC leaders.

In 2005, Burke was one of three recipients of the All-America FootballFoundation's Gen. Robert R. Neyland Outstanding Athletic Director Award.

He received the 2006 “Outstanding Alumni Award” from his alma mater,Marlington High School in Alliance, Ohio, recognizing his community serviceand professional achievements. Burke became one of only 21 alumni hon-ored since the award was instituted in 1982.

In June 2006, he was a featured speaker and panelist at the NationalAssociation of Collegiate Athletic Directors convention in New Orleans. Burkespoke on "Budgets at Non-BCS Schools" in a breakout session to membersof the College Athletic Business Managers of America at the NACDA conven-tion. He took part in a panel discussion of "Fundraising from an AthleticDirector's Perspective" speaking to the National Association of AthleticDevelopment Directors.

Since 2007, Burke has been a member of the prestigious NCAAChampionships/Sports Management Cabinet, a 49-person panel whichmakes recommendations to the Executive Council of presidents on all the key

issues facing Division I athletics. He previously served a four-year term on the NCAA

Division I Football Issues Committee (1999-2002) and con-currently served a term on the eight-member NCAA DivisionI-AA Football Championship Committee that administers thenational playoffs. Since his committee term expired, Burkehas served as a site supervisor for Football ChampionshipSubdivision playoff games across the nation and he isregarded as one of the country's premiere advocates of FCSfootball.

He is third vice-president of the FCS Athletic Director'sAssociation.

Tremendous competitive strides have been made inwomen's athletics under Burke's guidance. The NSU soccerprogram was the first one in Louisiana ever to reach theNCAA Tournament, doing so three times. Softball has madethree NCAA Tournament appearances. Volleyball has setattendance records and made its best-ever showings in con-ference play in each of the past four years.

In 2004, NSU received the highest possible rat-ing, "fully certified," from the National Collegiate Athletic Association, affirmingthat Northwestern operates its athletic program in substantial conformity withoperating principles adopted by the NCAA Division I membership.

Burke is a past president of the Natchitoches Kiwanis Club and remainsactive in that civic group. He has also been part of the steering committee forthe Natchitoches Christmas Festival and is a former president of theNatchitoches Area Jaycees. He is involved with the American HeartAssociation.

He and his wife, Susu, a Natchitoches native, NSU graduate and elemen-tary teacher, have a 14-year-old daughter, Catherine, who is a freshman at St.Mary's High School. The Burkes will celebrate their 22nd wedding anniversarythis summer.

NSU’s Academic All-Americans

The academic services provided for student-athletes at NSUoffer an array of programs to promote success in all areas of thecollege experience. Housed in the Jonnie Emmons AcademicCenter, the student-athletes enjoy a study space containing a 36-station computer lab as well as five additional rooms for quietstudy.

NSU athletics currently has two academic advisors on staff. The primary role of the athletic academic advisors is to serve asthe liaisons between the athletic department and institutional fac-ulty and staff. In addition, the academic advisors assist all stu-dent-athletes with class registration, study skills, deciding on amajor, as well as monitoring progress to meet NCAA and institu-tional academic standards. These services have proven to bevery successful as the most recent Federal Graduation Ratesplace NSU student-athletes at a 21% higher graduation rate thanthe general student population.

In addition to these academic services, the CHAMPS/Life Skills program is also housed in the academic center. This is a program that, in additionto supporting academic and athletic excellence, also promotes personal development, career development, as well as emphasizing the importance ofcommunity service. The latter three components will be the emphasis of the NSU Life Skills program, and in the next few years new programming andevents will be launched to enhance these areas.

In addition to the CHAMPS/Life Skills program, the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) also serves as an important component to the ath-letic department. Two student-athletes per team are nominated each year to serve on this important committee, which meets to discuss importantissues and new ideas regarding both athletics and Northwestern State as a whole. This group of leaders serves as the voice of the student-athletesand helps to ensure that important information is shared among students, coaches, and administrators.
