Playing Our Way to a 7: Strategies to Increase Quality Teacher Child Interactions during "Free Play" Lourdes Lambert, Consultant, and Ruth King, STG International Effective, engaging interactions and environments form the foundation for all learning in early childhood classrooms. These high-quality preschool practices include a well-organized and managed classroom, social and emotional support, and instructional interactions and materials that stimulate children’s thinking and skills. Best practice states that children should have a minimum of 60 minutes of free play/child directed Play built into their daily schedule. Assisting the Client in Developing Judgment and Decision Making Skills Rita Rizzo, CMC Daily, the Family Service Worker is called upon to make decisions that impact the lives of clients and their families. More and more frequently they are also responsible to guide clients through decision-making processes that will result in their progress toward sustained self-sufficiency. This seminar explores the perceptions, techniques, and strategies that lead to formulation of effective, long-term decisions for clients and workers alike. Problem and perception analysis strategies will be presented during this workshop. Learning Outcomes By the end of the session participants will be able to:

1. Get to the root cause of faulty assumptions made by clients and help expand their thinking 2. Ask 5 clarifying questions to assist clients in effective planning & problem solving 3. Use the force field analysis method of problem solving to help clients identify what is important to them prior to

making snap decisions This session is approved for SUTQ Specialized Training

Managing the IEP Process and Preparing Parents for Transition Ohio Coalition for the Education of Children with Disabilities

The process of establishing and implementing and IEP is a complicated process, but what happens after that? This session will focus on managing the IEP once it is in place, and how best to support and empower parents to be an advocate for their child through the transition to public school. There will be an emphasis on relevant regulations, effective partnerships, and issues common to preschool age IEPs. Learning Outcomes By the end of the session participants will be able to:

1. Identify the steps of the process of managing an IEP for a preschool child 2. Discuss keys to effective partnerships to support IEP implementation 3. Identify strategies to empower parents to manage IEP transition to public school.

Healthy Programs – Session 3: Healthy Policies Linda Berkland, RD, LD, Health Promotion Consultant with support from Carla Aronhalt, STG International

This session focuses on creating a healthier child care environment. Participants will discuss ways to craft an atmosphere where kids can grow, learn, and play at their best. This fun, interactive session provides participants with ideas on how to adopt and implement a new healthy policy successfully. Discussion of setting the tone and culture of wellness for the program will be emphasized. To meet the Ohio Healthy Programs application requirement, this session must be completed the person who has the authority to create and implement health policies. This staff person will need to be given permission to manage the OHP application in their program’s Director Information Portal.

Learning Outcomes By the end of the session participants will be able to:

1. Describe the role of policy in obesity prevention. 2. Discuss policy goals. 3. Identify tools for developing policies.

Making the Home-School Connection – A Session for Parents Victoria Newkirk

School Readiness is a primary predictor of your child’s achievement in adult life. As the parent, you are your child’s first and most important teacher and advocate in helping prepare your child for school and life. This session will help parents understand that role, and how to utilize home experiences to improve and enhance learning outcomes. Learning Outcomes By the end of the session participants will be able to:

Parents CLASS – An Introduction for Parents Jessica Bower, Education Manager, HARCATUS Head Start Participants will get an overview of the CLASS Observation Took, how it is used in Head Start, and how they can apply CLASS behaviors as volunteers in the classroom and with their own children at home. Parents will practice using language and interactions that support learning and development.

Learning Outcomes By the end of the session participants will be able to:

1. Describe key components of the CLASS tool.

2. Demonstrate language and interactions that support learning and development.

Family and Community Partnerships Family Engagement and School Readiness Series: Supporting Transitions Heather Nusbaum, STG International This session, part of a series of topics supported by the Research to Practice Series: Family Engagement and School Readiness, will address supporting transitions. Participants will interact, network, and share best practice strategies to support program planning and implementation regarding family engagement in transition and transition to Kindergarten. Participants are encouraged to bring examples of work, including:

Program transition plans; specific to Kindergarten transition

Activities to engage children, families, and communities (local school districts) in Kindergarten transitioning Learning Outcomes By the end of the session participants will be able to:

Ohio Healthy Programs The Ohio Head Start Association is partnering with the Ohio Department of Health and

the Ohio Child Care Resource and Referral Association to bring the Ohio Healthy

Programs project to the Head Start community.

The project offers child care programs the opportunity to earn recognition as an Ohio

Healthy Program. Steps toward this distinction include: attending training, implementing

a wellness policy, improving menus and engaging parents.

The distinction occurs by license and there are very specific requirements about which staff must attend each

We are holding the remaining Healthy Programs sessions at the OHSAI February Meeting, “Healthy Policies” on

Thursday, February 5th, and “Healthy Menu” on Friday, February 6th.

Who must attend these sessions to meet the Ohio Healthy Programs application requirement?

Healthy Policies: This session must be completed the person who has the authority to create and implement health policies. This staff person will need to be given permission to manage the OHP application in their program’s Director Information Portal.

Healthy Menus: This session must be completed the person who plans the menus in terms of ordering food and menu design, generally

the center cook.

Participants must register for the OHSAI February Meeting, sign up on the attached form, and complete registration in

PD Track. See below for detailed instructions.

Application Steps Application Requirements 1. Attend the SUTQ-approved training, Healthy Children, Healthy Weights. Training is offered statewide by the Health Promotion Consultant Network, Child Care Resource and Referral system as well as community partners. Find trainings via the Registry or attend OHSAI sponsored events.

Session 1: Healthy Habits, Parts 1-4. (10 hrs)

One staff person from each age level represented in the program must attend

Session 2: Healthy Menus (2.5 hrs)

The staff cook should attend Session 3: Healthy Policy (2.5 hrs)

The administrator must attend

OHSAI will be hosting Healthy Children, Healthy Weights training during the 2014-2015 program year at

the Regular OHSAI meetings as follows:

Session 1: Healthy Habits Target Audience: Classroom Teachers. One staff person from each age level represented must attend.

All four sessions must be completed to receive SUTQ credit.

Part 1: Healthy Activity, October OHSAI Meeting

Part 2: Healthy Eating and Feeding, October OHSAI Meeting

Part 3: Healthy Growing: Body, Mind and in the Classroom, December OHSAI Meeting

How Can My Program Apply?

An application process is available to Directors. Directors may use the Registry’s Director Information Portal, via the

Ohio Professional Registry at https://login.occrra.org/. Completing the “Application Steps” and the “Application

Requirements” essentially completes the application process.

Training Opportunities

Trainings are posted to the Ohio Professional Registry at https://login.occrra.org/. To find trainings, please contact your

Health Promotion Consultant or Child Care Resource and Referral Agency. For more information about Ohio Healthy

Programs, contact the Ohio Child Care Resource and Referral Association at 877-547-6978 or e-mail

OHP Status Award

OCCRRA reviews submitted applications for OHP status. OCCRRA recognizes programs that meet the OHP requirements.

Each program receives an award letter and certificate. As funding allows, programs may receive additional recognition

items.

Maintain OHP Status

Programs remain designated as OHP for one calendar year. To maintain OHP status, ensure that all four steps are met:

Ensure staff are trained in the curriculum

Submit current menu that demonstrates adherence to OHP standards

Submit at least one new healthy policy

Submit at least one new healthy family engagement activity

Ohio Healthy Programs is managed by OCCRRA through funding provided by the Ohio Department of Health. *The

Healthy Children, Healthy Weights curriculum is provided through a cooperative agreement with Columbus Public

Health.

2. Implement at least one policy to ensure healthy practices are maintained in the program. Upload policy via the Registry’s Director Information Portal.

Program policy is submitted with The program’s application via the Registry Director’s Portal. Attendance at the Healthy Policies session will assist administrators with creation of a program policy.

3. Demonstrate improvement in children’s menu. After School programs may demonstrate improvement in snack menu. Programs that require children to bring their meals may show improvement in alternate offerings. Upload materials via the Registry’s Director Information Portal.

Menus demonstrate improvement by:

Offering a different non-fried vegetable per day in a 5-day period

Offering a different fruit per day in a 5-day period (not counting juice)

Offering a whole grain food per day

Offering fried foods no more than twice a week

Offering 100% juice no more than once a day and limiting portion to 4-6 oz

Providing lower fat milk (1% or skim) for classrooms with children 2 years of age and older

4. Achieve at least one healthy family engagement activity providing bulletin boards, healthy articles in newsletters, cooking activities, meetings on the topic, etc. Upload pictures of materials or activities via the Registry’s Director Information Portal.

Programs may demonstrate healthy family engagement activity in a variety of ways, not limited to:

Providing bulletin boards or articles in newsletters on healthy habit topics

Providing healthy cooking activities

Hosting family events for physical activity
