Exploration – A Serious Game

• Train new Explorationists in creative thinking within exploration, one of

the key elements companies need to take care of themselves, as it cannot

be taken care of at technical high schools or universities.

• Performance versus Quality will be challenged more and more today and

in the future Oil and Gas Exploration.

• Technology and Humans will be paired more than ever, and challenge will

be how can humans utilize technology given the Big Data problem we have

and will get in larger degree.

• Machine and human learning will have to go hand in hand.

•What role will Artificial Intelligence play, and why not use the training of

humans as input to the machine training of data?

Oil and Gas Exploration require new ways of thinking

Exploration – A Serious Game

New way of training is required, with hands on use of existing libraries and

software in real case scenarios both technical and business wise.

The training has to become an active input to the business analysis and

monitoring, to achieve learning into the active operations.

Valioso Ltd has made pilot tests of a Serious Game system to be utilized

within E&P companies.

This system called Virtually Explore Technology (VET, which is Norwegian

for Know).

In this presentation we outline the concepts of this system.

Virtual Field Trip

3D photorealistic models of geologic outcrops are acquired on the

ground with reflectorless laser rangefinders, GPS and oblique close-in

photography at centimeter to decimeter accuracy. The result is a 3-D

virtual model that can be used for 3D visualization and/or analysis.

VIRTUAL SEISMIC ATLAS

The Virtual Seismic Atlas (VSA) project is generating a freely accessible, internet-based, interactive

community resource that captures and promotes interpretations of seismic data within a framework

useful for geoscience training and research.

The VSA will provide a platform for the community to find seismic examples and analogues, to compare

interpretation strategies and experience.

All materials on the VSA will be free at the point of access, with links to further sources of information.

The VSA takes the concept of 1980s paper-based seismic atlases into the 21st century to allow access

to and visualisation of 3D data sets.

The VSA project is overseen from Leeds by Rob Butler, Bill McCaffrey and Graham Stuart.

EVT) Exploration Virtual Tools( proposed.

1 - VBMT (Virtual Basin Modeling Tool) - Basin Tectonics and Structural Style – Identify lithostratigraphic section

and Standard Nomenclature, evaluate regional hydrocarbon sourcing, identify Typical traps, top seals, lateral seals

2- VFT (Virtual Field Trip) and DOT (Digital Outcrop Tour) inspecting analogues in field, wells, other fields.

Make type Logs and stratigraphic column and determine seismic data acquisition parameters and processing flow

based on these observations

3- VRC (Virtual Reservoir Characteristics) - Determine reservoir characteristics

(Rw, OWC, porosities, lithologies)

4- DEM (Depositional environment modeling) – Determine reservoir distribution through various tools and the

integration of them

5- VISI (Virtual Interactive synthetics integration) Acquire and integrate VSP’s, sonic and densities into other

application domains

6 – VOE (Virtual Integrated Operations environments). These virtual environments will cover Exploration

Operations Room (EOR), Geosteering Operations Room (EOR) and Real Time Drilling Operations Center

(RTDOC). It can cover other venues such as I-Field and Event Solutions centers, but its more production

environment rather than exploration systems.

7 – VPTI (Virtual Play and Trap Identification). Here the students will be able to access and use tool to use Self-

Organized Map (SOM) methodology and Convolutional Neural Network technology in play and trap identification.

Exploration Simulation Tools proposed.

1 – SDAP (Seismic data acquisition parameters and processing flow)

This module will teach the students the basic elements of acquisition design methodology applied in company as

well as applying a processing sequence according to a given geological setting and targets.

2- SSTOD (Simulate Synthetic tie of data) This module will train the students in an interactive way how well and

seismic tie are performed in company, as well teach the candidates of pitfalls etc.

3 – $SPTM (Simulated Play and Trap Method) This module will give students insight in how to perform CPA,

KSOM and CNN technology in order to perform effective attribute analysis to be used in play and trap identification

and risk analysis.

4 – SOGE (Simulated Oil and Gas Exploration) This is the ultimate challenge to the students. It can either be

used to train various aspects of exploration such as Integration of basin modeling, use of wells, mapping,

volumetrics, and risk. However the simulation can be run all in once either as an exam or as a competition amongst

the students (as a game).
