With this; however, is the poignant reminder that time waits for no one, especially not older teenagers keen to enter the adult world. After thirteen years in the education system our treasured Year 12s have graduated from Mansfield SHS, our teachers have smiled sadly as they walked out our gates the final time and the rest of our students looked on with anticipation and maybe a little nervousness. Finishing school is exciting because lessons and assessment are not always edge-of-your-seat kind of stuff, but then neither is adulthood where boring things like bills, housework and all the other responsibilities of life intrude daily. Becoming an adult who can negotiate those ‘boring’ things is really important, but liking yourself, being proud of who you are and believing in your ability to overcome challenges is just as crucial to adulting success. Believe it or not, our students have been building up and practising the resilience, courage and strength needed to do this almost daily over the past year. Mansfield SHS students from Year 12 all the way through to Year 7 have faced innumerable challenges during 2019 in their learning, effort and ability to remain steadfast in their determination to achieve their best. Every cold morning getting out of bed, every difficult concept shown in class, all the practice or training sessions, which tested their abilities or the puzzling out of assessment or homework at the kitchen table,… your children have been trying so very hard all year to understand, improve and achieve their goals and I am so proud of them all. They have shown courage and strength in facing these challenges, skills and character traits they will need in the future when it is their turn to leave school behind and become the caring, happy and hardworking adults we know they can be. New electronic permission and consentforms system for 2020

Due to an overwhelming response fromparents and in an effort to cut down onpaper, signed permission forms andconsents we will be sent out using anemail system with an individual linkattached for each student.

Parents can create an eight digit code toallow access to this portal and will beable to electronically approvepermissions and return them to the

school.

The data will then self-populate to each individual studentsaccount so that we have an up-to-date database of all formsrequired at the start of the school year.

Throughout the year, further use of this portal will be madeto send out permission forms for trips, medical details andexcursions.

Unfortunately, we are unable to instigate the system any earlierthan the start of 2020 and so we will be emailing the 2020swimming carnival and sports carnival permission formstogether with the 2020 TRA refund form out to all existing Year8, Year 9, Year 10 and Year 11 students for signing and returnto us before the end of the school year.

2020 fee structureThe Parents and Citizens Associationapproved the fee structure for 2020 attheir August meeting. The annualschool levy is:

A breakdown of resources that iscovered in the annual school levy isshown below.

Invoicing of subject charges will be different for Year 7 andYear 8 from next year with these year levels invoiced for oneamount instead of each individual subject. Students in Frenchimmersion, music and the TIC program will remain the same asprevious years.

However, Year 9, Year 10, Year 11 and Year 12 will be invoicedfor each individual subject studied.

The annual school levy for Year 7 to Year 10 will be Invoiced onthe Tuesday 26 November and Year 11 and Year 12 in 2020.Subject charges for all year levels will be invoiced in February2020. The government textbook hire refund will be credited toall student accounts in February 2020.

Market Day 2019

By Year 9 business students -Liza Popal (9F) and PragatiVijayakumar (9F) (Los Nacho DelRey)

Capital, break even, mark-up, sales,profit...this was all that was on ourminds for two very long yet exemplaryterms for Year 9 Business. Market Day

2019 was undoubtedly a success like no other. The Market Dayproject was an opportunity for Year 9 and Year 11 businessstudies students to hone their newfound entrepreneurial skillsand come up with a winning business idea. Prior to Market Day,business ideas were generated, calculations were made, budgets were formulated, capital was contributed, andbusiness plans were finalised. The two-day event involved therunning of 75 businesses and 350 students. After Market Day,students finalized profit and loss statements, distributed profits

and evaluated their team and venture performance in orderto determine whether they were successful in achieving theirfinancial and non-financial goals.

Market Day not only strengthened our entrepreneurial skillsbut also addressed the need for environmental concern in thebusiness. As a part of the business plan that was createdprior to the marketing and creation of our product, we wererequired to list methods of ensuring that our businesses wereas environmentally feasible and sustainable as possible. Groupsattempted to ensure that the majority of their equipment, suchas cutlery, plates and napkins were brought from home ratherthan purchased. This would ensure that usable product wouldnot go to waste and would prevent the unnecessary use ofdangerous plastic items. Other teams bought recyclable bowlsand wooden utensils to serve. Evidently, Market Day was alsoan opportunity to do our part for the environment and ensurethat our businesses were environmentally sustainable.

There is no doubt that Market Day could not have been theroaring success it was without some helpers along the way.Firstly, to Mr Patel who helped with the important job ofensuring that our electrical equipment was safe to use (taggingand testing). The manual arts department, specifically MrRomero, also aided the Market Day process by ensuring thatthe workplace health and safety requirements were fulfilled.Year 10 and Year 12 students operated the information booth, and acted as security. Evidently, a very large thank you is inorder. We would also like to thank Chappy Glen, the resourcecentre staff and the student body, for supporting ourendeavors. A number of parents also supervised and helpedthe students, especially the barbecuing teams, so we wouldlike to thank you for taking time out of your busy schedules tosupport our school. Our biggest thank you goes to the businessteachers for organizing the event for us. The Year 9 cohortis forever grateful for this Market Day experience and it couldnot have happened without you. Additionally, as an immensethank you to the school for allowing for this event, $1900 ofMarket Day taxes and fees are being donated to the chaplaincyprogram

Overall, Market Day was a truly exciting experience and taughtthe students valuable lessons in leadership, teamwork andmanaging complex situations. The experience was chaotic, exciting, exhilarating and fast-paced all at the same time.Personally, we found the experience interesting, exciting andfun. There were times where the experience was stressful, ifwe did not have enough pre-orders or our ingredients weretoo expensive. Nevertheless, after utilising our newfoundproblem-solving skills, we found that solving these issues gotprogressively easier. Market Day is unique to Mansfield SHSand the amazing experience will undoubtedly be beneficialthroughout our lives. Ultimately, the experience was immenselyenjoyable, and I can say without a doubt, that any businessstudies student would do it again in a heartbeat.

English

Ms Carissa Bladin,Ms Carissa Bladin,Head of DepartmentHead of Department

Mr Kevin Connell,Mr Kevin Connell,Head of DepartmentHead of Department

From Year 7 to Year 12, it has been a year replete with newexperiences, understandings and achievements for our Englishstudents. Together they have read millions of words fromauthors big and small. They engaged with the works of modernauthors and poets who continue to astound and excite, andalso grappled with the eminent works of Shakespeare, uncovering the enduring lessons about what it means to behuman. We know that, for many of our students, the specialencounters with these texts from around the world and fromacross time have formed experiences and memories that will betreasured for years to come.

As you know, we have recently farewelled our Year 12 studentswho achieved outstanding results for English as a cohort, withnearly a third of them being placed within the VHA band. Thisis such a wonderful achievement for our students and school! We are so proud of our students and, of course, our teacherswhose tireless efforts have helped our students achieve thesefantastic results.

We also recently congratulated our Year 11 students who arenow over halfway through their senior courses, with so manyof them meeting the demands of the new English, Literature, and Essential English syllabuses with gumption and resolve. Allthe while, our students have grown and matured through thetexts they have encountered both inside and outside of ourclassrooms.

Some reflections from our students

As the year comes to a close, we wanted to see what ourstudents enjoyed most about what they have studied acrossthe year. We have included a few of their responses below foryou.

“I love studying English because every time I walk into myEnglish classroom, I know what I need to do and what mustbe done. I know the high standards and expectations frommy English teacher as well, which is what I like as I feel moreorganised that way. What is also great about English is that wecan be as creative as we want, and we get to let our mindwonder with imagination!” - Year 7 English student

“I have loved studying gothic literature because it is actuallyinteresting and so different from anything we have ever donebefore!” - Year 11 Literature student

“I love learning new things, in English especially. I enjoy theway that just reading can improve the way you express yourselfthrough so many amazing words, and also that there are so

many different ways to express yourself through those words! Ialso enjoy writing creatively in class as there are so many placesto go, and all of them are on the tip of your pen.” - Year 7English student

“I love how when we write in English class that we get toexpress all of our thoughts and emotions onto paper in our owncreative way. I also really like that, through reading, we get tolearn why different people think in different ways.” – Year 11English student

Holiday reading

We would love for our students to take pleasure from someholiday reading. Reading is a rare gift that never stops givingand it is one that is well worth encouraging. In the wordsof Charles William Eliot, “Books are the quietest and mostconstant of friends; they are the most accessible and wisest ofcounsellors, and the most patient of teachers.” Together withthis quote, we have included another favourite quote belowthat, for me, encapsulates so much of what is special aboutreading:

“The best moments in reading are when you come acrosssomething - a thought, a feeling, a way of looking at things -which you had thought special and particular to you. And now, here it is, set down by someone else, a person you have nevermet, someone even who is long dead. And it is as if a hand hascome out and taken yours." – Alan Bennett

There are so many wonderful novels to read and so many thatwe could recommend to our students for some great holidayreading. Here are a few suggestions for our different year levelsthat you might consider:

Year 7 to Year 8

Year 9 to Year 10

Year 11 to Year 12

We wish you all the best for a safe and happy holiday with yourfamily and loved ones.

Information Technology

1-to-1 Technology Program2019

Responsible use of IT facilities

There are several aspects toresponsible use of our school network. One of the challenges of a very largehigh school is ensuring equitableaccess to the internet. We only have alimited bandwidth and the priority for

this bandwidth must be educationally based. Some studentshave been identified as using streaming services to watch TVprograms during school time. This not only takes up a largeamount of our bandwidth, but is also a distraction for studentsduring times when they should be concentrating on schoolwork.

Internet quotas

Internet quotas have been introduced to encourage responsibleuse of our Internet bandwidth. Quotas are generous enoughto allow students scope to use the internet as they wouldnormally. However, students who stream video and music willfind they will be blocked from further access. The usage onlyapplies to that being used at school and the blocking onlyoccurs for students while at school. Home use is unaffected. Here are some facts about the quotas:

• Elle Burton (8G) – futsal

• Sienna Jeffery (8C) – futsal

• Thomas Keast (11J) – cricket.

1. The quota is for a month of usage. Quotas are resetat the start of the each month.

2. Once a student reaches their quota, they are blockedfor the remainder of the month.

3. Blocked students can still access:a. Webmailb. Learning Place coursesc. SharePoint and OneDrived. Online Office Apps including OneNote and Word.

Inappropriate email use

Students are becoming increasingly distracted withinappropriate emails. These could simply be group email chatsor be more serious. Students risk having their email disabled ifthey continue to abuse the privilege. Please remember that theemail account is provided for appropriate school use only.

What happens if you are leaving Mansfield SHS?

All students currently have either a CYO or BYO laptop. Thereare processes to be followed for students with either type oflaptop, whether leaving school or changing schools.

Students with CYOD laptops

Laptops in the CYOD program are school-owned devices. Wecan transfer ownership to a student who is leaving as long asthe following conditions are met:

Please be aware that if you leave the school with a laptopwithout fulfilling these conditions, it could be considered theft. Here is a summary of the end of year process regardinglaptops:

Students with BYOD laptops

All BYO laptops should be connected to Microsoft Intune, which is linked to the school email address. After leavingschool, students should disconnect this account from Intune.Instructions for disconnecting both Windows and Mac laptopsfrom Intune can be found in the BYO section of the schoolwebsite.

Celebrating IT successes

This year the IT department has coordinated a number ofextra-curricular activities and events. Some of these successeshave been reported in the school magazine but there are anumber of additional successes we would like to recognise inthis last school newsletter of the year.

First Tech Challenge

The First Tech Challenge team competed in the QueenslandRegional competition on Saturday 2 November and despitebeing rookies, due to the extensive support and mentoring fromthe Bechtel Engineering team, they were very well preparedfor the event and placed 3rd overall in the competition. TheFirst Tech Challenge is open to students aged 12 years to18 years so our junior Year 8 and Year 9 team was in thesame competition and performed better on the day than someof the Year 11 and Year 12 teams from other schools. Weare extremely proud of their success and the success of theirmentor team from Bechtel Engineering who placed 8th. Bothteams will be representing Queensland at the NationalChampionship in Sydney on Friday 6 December and Saturday 7December. Congratulations to Joshua Petersen (8H), Jack Irwin(8Q), Adhiraj Sandhu (9S) and Jerry Wu (9P) for your exceptionalperseverance and teamwork over many months to achieve thissuccess.

Mansfield and Bechtel alliance team were finalists at the FTCMansfield and Bechtel alliance team were finalists at the FTCRegional Qualifying event on Saturday 2 NovemberRegional Qualifying event on Saturday 2 November

If you are interested in joining an FTC team next year, pleasecontact Mrs Docherty [email protected].

Search for the Next Tech Girl Superhero

Iqra Palasara (11E),Chloe Flintoff (7I) and Dishi Agarwal (7J) formed a team towrite a business case and build a mobile application that wouldaddress one of the United Nations sustainability goals. The girlscreated an app called litter tutor for which they received thePeople’s Choice award. Here is what the experience meant tothem.

4. Blocked students cannot access sites that requiretheir password to access from school e.g. Google, most general websites, streaming sites.

• Full payment of the laptop has been completed

• The laptop has been returned so that EQ softwareand security controls can be removed.

1. All students with a CYOD laptop will be asked tohand in their laptop to IT Support after their finalexam.

2. The laptops will have school software and devicerestrictions removed.

3. Students have the option of collecting and keepingthe laptop as long as all fees have been paid.Failure to pay outstanding fees will result in theschool maintaining ownership of the laptop.

4. If a student leaves the school without handing inthe laptop, restrictions will be remotely set to highand warranty will not be transferred. This will meanall access to social media sites will be blocked andany repairs could not be claimed under warranty.

The Premier’s Coding Challenge is a coding competition forstudents in Year 3 to Year 10 and is based on the AustralianCurriculum Digital Technologies curriculum. This year, twoMansfield SHS students, Jemma Reeves (7E) and AbbieRichardson (7E), took the initiative to find out about thiscompetition after seeing a poster on their classroom wall.Jemma and Abbie had not yet covered the skills required, asstudents at our school cover this material in Year 8. However, this did not hinder their enthusiasm. Their love of learningmotivated them to create an account on Codesters.com andlearn the skills they needed for the competition in their owntime. Abbie and Jemma worked hard to create a Pythonprogram to educate students about cybersafety and won theYear 7 and Year 8 Python programming pairs category of thecompetition. NAPLAN 2020 update

Mansfield SHS continues to maintain aproud tradition as a quiet achiever inregards to so many aspects of schoollife – NAPLAN is one of these. Ourstudents outpace the nationalminimum standards and moresignificantly, they outperform ‘likeschools’.

A key support of student success is the collaborative approachprovided by our teaching staff.

In 2020, there is an increasing number of schools movingtowards NAPLAN Online. You may read in the media aboutchanges to the online platform and the challenges this maybring. Parents may rest assured that whilst Mansfield SHSis preparing for this change, in 2020 NAPLAN will remain aseries of four paper tests at our school. The NAPLAN dates atMansfield SHS in 2020 are Tuesday 11 May to Friday 14 May.

Occasionally students do lose their NAPLAN report. If this hashappened, please do not hesitate to contact the school to ordera replacement. This process does take a little time, but is agood safety net for missing reports.

High quality learning and teaching in all subjects is thefoundation of our exceptional results in NAPLAN. Our researchbased approaches to reading, writing and numeracy have beenintegrated school wide. We do not explicitly prepare forNAPLAN, but rather we embed high quality learning andteaching practices throughout the school curriculum, usingprograms such as Eagle & Wolf Reading, Write it up! & Polya’sProblem Solving Model to ensure student success.

Perhaps most effective is our communication with studentsand their families – every student, every day, understands thefollowing:

The consistently high NAPLAN performance at Mansfield SHSis simply one small indicator of the exceptional work of ourdedicated teachers, and their partnership with students andtheir families. We are very proud of our Mansfield SHS students.

Thank you to all members of the 2019 learning andperformance teams: literacy including RAMP, the resourcecentre, gifted and talented and EAL/D and of course NAPLANteam. So many tireless professionals; so many who all havecontributed to the simple goal, to make student learning better.

We repeat the message from our Executive Principal and fromall staff; we hope that all members of our Mansfield SHScommunity experience a safe, restful and enjoyable break. Seeyou all in 2020

Practical Arts

Formula students atMansfield SHS

This year was the third year of theFormula Student program undertakenat Mansfield SHS. Organised by MrCox and assisted by Mr Nair, thisprogram allowed the students to studythe MEM20413 Certificate II inEngineering Pathways while engagingin exciting and fulfilling course work.

The course was run over approximately 30 weeks from 3pm to7.30pm on Thursdays as an extra-curricular activity. Elevenstudents worked tirelessly over this time to build the car in ourworkshop. They were Ricky Kuuronny (11Q), Andre Yuen (11E),Raphael Paisarn (11L), Hayden Prasad (11N), Dante Faustini(11I), Joshua Olsen (11L), Seamus Hilton (11F), GabrielIommarini (11N), Mathew Chai (11J), Khaiser Milan (11M) andKaleb Togiaso (11B). The students (pictured below) were ableto drive the car at Queensland Raceways’ Lakeside circuit atKurwongbah on Friday 25 October.

The students were instructed by Mr Cox and blended learningvideo instruction to gain an understanding of the tasks andwhat was required as an outcome. They were assigned jobcards and drawings to instruct them on what they wererequired to manufacture and the steps required to achievethe outcome. The component manufacture was broken downwithin the job card into the various step-by-step work taskssuch as mechanical cutting, linishing, using handtools andpower tools, pedestal drilling, welding, assembling etc.

The students were required to clock on to each stage of thejob card, just like in a real manufacturing workshop. A computerprogram was used to record how many units the studentmanufactured and the time it took them to complete the job.The instructor signed off those components as satisfactoryonce they were manufactured and met the tolerances andspecification required on the drawing.

By Charlotte Woods (10R), one of the SELN(organised by Brisbane City Council)

This year my friend Janudi Satharasinghe (10E) and I attendedSELN (Student Environmental Leadership Network) meetings tolearn about implementing a project in our school that wouldmake Mansfield SHS a more environmentally sustainableschool. We decided to focus on waste. After lots of planningand going through a few ideas, we decided to take on plasticwaste management. Each correct plastic container collected issent to the council in exchange for 10c, and then this money isput towards the school. This program increased my leadershipskills and made me more aware of the changing environment. Ialso made lots of new friends! SELN was a very informative andengaging experience.
