RESIDENTS of the Mbucwa-na area inKwaMpumuzaare demandingactionfrom

the Msunduzi Municipality aftergoing without clean water for thepast nine months.

While an agreement wasmadethat a water tanker would bringwater twice a day, they said thatlately it comes only once aweek ornot at all.

The residents said that theproblem started in August last

year, after Umgeni water handedover the water connection projectto the Msunduzi municipality.

They said that at first they didnot have water during the day butit would come back on in theevenings, but since August lastyear, there has been a completeshutdown.

Ondayswhentheyhavemissedthewater tanker, theyareforcedtodrink water from a spring.

Speaking to Echo, ZandileMkhize said:

“Sometimes the water tankerdoes not arrive at all and we have

to use spring water for laundry, cleaning and bathing. More than100 familieshavebeenaffectedbythis.

“We cannot even have ceremo-nies, let alone build housesbecauseof this. In thepastweusedto walk to Ashdown to collectwater, but residents have sincestopped us as they are paying forthe water.”

Another resident, who did notwanttobeidentified, saidthattheyhave been quiet for too long andare now demanding municipalaction.

“We are even thinking ofmarching to the city hall so thatthey can see how important thisissue is to us.”

Residents said that they weretold by their ward councillor,Lucky Mbanjwa, that the waterpipes are too small to accommo-date all of them.

Mbanjwa said that the munici-pality is aware of thematter and isdealing with it.

“A community meeting wasconvened in the presence of thedeputy mayor and it was agreedthat a water tanker would cometwiceaday. Ionlyknowofonecasewhere a water tanker did notarrive and I investigated.

“In the event that the tankerdoes not arrive, people shouldcontact me immediately so that Ican follow up.

“The problem is that thereservoirhastobeadjustedsothatit can accommodate the needs of alarger population.

“In the past, there were lesspeople than there are nowand thereservoir is nowbattling to supplyall of them with water.”

VOX POPS“I don’t take JuliusMalema as a person whotalks sense. He is famousfor being rude and disrespecting others in public. Ithink parliament will be ajoke and that will makeparliament lose the dignityit deserves.”

ThobekaKhumalo

“It will be a total disaster,in fact it’s already a disaster since he hasmentioned that he willbe wearing his red overalls to parliament. Thatis totally disrespectful ofhim to even say. Heneeds to dress appropriately for parliament and lookmature.”

Sphindile Sukade

“Julius Malema is known for causing war by the way he speaks inpublic. He is not ashamed tospeak anyhow about anyone andfor me he has not set a goodexample in the public eye. What Ican say is that he will be causingdrama each and every day.Malema has never been seriousand that alone is not a goodsign, unless he changes hisbehaviour.”

Nonhlanhla Sithole

“I have never believed asingle thing that boy has said.

I have never taken himseriously and that isbecause of the mannerthat he speaks. He justspeaks and he has no

respect for his elders.Imagine the chaos hewill be causing in

parliament.”

Richard Ndlovu

THE 25 national seats that Julius Malema won in the generalelections means he is off to parliament. People are eager toknow what this will mean for the country. Echo reporter Nom

pendulo Ngubane spoke to locals about Malema’s achievement.

MAY MELTDOWN

I AM suffering a severe post-holi-day, post-election, post-Mazibu-ko apocalypse.

The elections, with all heirranting politicians, misplaced DAvotes and fanfare, are over. Thelucky among us have now man-agedtoremovethat littleblackdotfrom our thumbs.

The spate of public holidayswhich we enjoy in and aroundApril is over. Lindiwe Mazibuko, youngest hotshot of the DA and avoice of reason among the rant-ingsofParliament, isoff to furtherher education at Harvard.

What, South Africans, is thereto live for? Mazibuko was an in-spiration to millennials all acrossthe countrywhowish to break in-to the world of politics. Havingbeen born only in 1980, she wasproof that Struggle Credentialswerenotanessential accessory toa political career.

Tomakematters worse, I real-ised recently, when I heard thestoryofTerrorLekotatakingabiteoutof ahat, that I shouldhavevot-edforCope.Finally,wehaveapol-itician who keeps to his word, having declared that if his partylost “market share” in these elec-

tions, he would indeed eat a hat.My respect for him grew upon

his refusal to allow an EFF beretto cross his lips. Any sensibleSouth African takes leave duringApril, when public holidays canbe strung together with minimalleave days to create a blissful two

weekholiday.Thismeansthatourholidays are now well and trulyover until December, giving ussevenmonths and approximatelyfive days of nothing but hard slogandever-increasingpetrolprices.Onebreathof freshaironthehori-zon is that Julius Malema has se-

cured a seat in Parliament.This Idi-Amin-in-the-making

now has a terrifying amount ofpower, considering that combin-ing his six percent of the votewithJacob’s 62%, a two-thirdsmajority is achieved.

While that is in no way goodnews for our country, the up sideis that each sitting of Parliamentwill now be more hysterical thana Trevor Noah show.

It’s also that time of year whenmuscle-bound fitness fanatics fillourpavementsdayinanddayout, jogging until sweat blinds themwhile doing their last-minutetraining for the Comrades Mara-thon. I am forced to takemy beretoff to these intrepid folk. By thetimethestragglerswerejustmiss-ing the cut-off time at the finishline and collapsing in tears, I’d becollapsing at a coffee shop on theoutskirts of Maritzburg, havingwalked, hobbled and crawled ap-proximately 10 kilometres. Over-all, it seems like a good time for achange, to make up for the posi-tive political change our countrydid not receive. I’ll either dye myhair pink, get another tattoo, orlearn how to cook.

TALKINGFOOTBALL

Defining talentJUNE is traditionally a period when talentscouting is done in South African football.

Professional football clubs will be callingthousands of eager young boys to be put underthe microscope.

In modern football clubs, coaches have abroader view of talent. Presently, the majorityof us think tricky feetdefine football talent.Theproblem is that players with fast feet so oftentrip up in the mid-to long term.

Coaches in South Africa need to have abroaderviewofwhatconstitutewinningtalent. We need amore expansive definition of talent.Intelligent coaches understand that talentcomes inbothphysicalandmind-set form.Thegreatest footballers are a product of theirdreams and relentless love for practice.

Generally, there are no footballers who arenot talented. Talent comes in different forms.

There are players who are gifted with intelli-gence, a desire to learn and a passion for thegame. There are playerswho time a tackle likea concert pianist times the notes in a bar. Youalso have thosewith silky and velvety touches.Acoach thereforeshouldhelp innurturingandbuilding existing abilities and qualities.

Presently, mind-set talent is neglected.Maybe this explains why we are battling ininternational competitions.

Hardwork,persistence,focusandpersever-ance are some of the soft skills required if aperson is to succeed. What is the use of havinga player with world class dribbling skills but averyweakmind-set? A player that easily givesup when the goings are tough?

Thegoodnewsforbothplayersandcoachesis that both the mental and physical skills canbe developed.

Coacheshave tobelieve in their players andhelp players believe in themselves.

It is also important for young players tounderstand that not everyone is the same. Youcanbe thebest versionofyourself. It ispossibleto improve and get better through hard andquality work. Naïve coaches tend to think theyareprophets. It isnotpossible toknowanotherperson’s limits and to predict the future. Iappeal to players not to listen to thosewho saythat their ambitions are too big.

BAFANA Bafana and KaizerChiefs strikerBernardParker, who on Sundaywon a Golden

Boot during the annual PSLAwards, agrees that South African playerscan take the game to the next level.

Parker said that he was happy tobecomethehighestgoalscorerintheleague, but was not proud of thenumber of goals he scored.

“I’m happy to win it because lastseason I unfortunately lost outtowards the end.

“Personally, I think the standardof soccer in our country is not bad atall but we need to score more goalsin our league games.

“Looking at the standard andquality of players and coaches, Ibelieve our strikers should find thebackofthenetmanymoretimesthanmy 10 league games goals I scoredthis season,” said Parker.

Parker believes SA teams shouldconcentrate more on strikers, andplayers must also teach themselvesto run off the ball or learn to get to

scoring areas.“As a striker or a player, you

should know that to get a chance toscore, youneedtoalwaysrunintothebaby box. Also make extra time foryourself to practice shooting andheading,” he said.

The former Bafana Bafana coachTedDumitru, who also coached a lotof PSL teams including MamelodiSundowns, Orlando Pirates andKaizer Chiefs, said that SA clubsshould seriously think about em-ploying trainers for strikers such asother countries around Europe.

“I see it’snow likea fashion forSAteams to have a head coach, his twoassistantsorone, agoalkeepercoachanda fitness trainer.Butwho is look-ing after the strikers?

“Nobodyisworriedaboutmakingthemsharp.Aroundtheworld, clubsand countries are now employingspecialists trainers in differentdepartments, like strikers, defend-ers and midfielders,” he said.

Is South African athletics heading for another disaster?WILL the next election for Athletics SouthAfrica (ASA)mean another dark era for thesport in the country?

The governing body of national athleticsrecently moved its eagerly awaitedelections to June 7 fromMay 24 because ofthepresidential inaugurationonthatday inPretoria.

Alreadyattractinga lotofattention in thelocal athletics circles are the names tocompete for ASA presidency.

Some athletics clubs and officials havecalled some of the names on the list a joke.

One of the founders of the annualMaritzburgCityMarathon, andchairmanofNatal Carbineers Athletics Club, JohnHall, said that athletics in the province, and at anational level, urgently needs a majorrevamp.

Hall said that provincial and nationalsport has gone through a lot, has sufferedinmanyways andhe appealed for honesty.

“All of us are aware that athletics hasnotbeen inagoodspace fora long timenow forreasons known by everybody.

“Athletics suffered technically andmore

mportantly, financially. This code of sportneeds help at all levels - regionally, provin-cially and nationally.

“My personal wish is to see a genuineleader on top without any baggage or darkclouds still hanging over them.

“Maybe athletics need an honest, open-minded person in order to have a freshstart,”said Hall.

Western Province (president), formerKZNA president and ex-ASA executivemember, Aleck Skhosana, Steve Mkasi
