Working together with home and community, we are dedicated to providing the best education for every student, enabling each to be a thoughtful, responsible contributor to a changing world. East Junior High Newsletter Registration for next year’s classes will begin in early February. Students will be receiving registration materials and bringing them home to review. As a parent, you can take an active role in this process. What can you do? A few simple, effective things. Ask your student what courses they are required to take. Ask them if the course fits their interests and abilities. Our counselors are available to answer questions about the registration process and next year’s classes. Be careful and wise when guiding your daughter or son in making course selections for next school year. Why? Because students are held accountable for their course selection choices. As a general rule, students cannot drop courses after May 1. Again, please be sure that students carefully consider their course selections. Below are important dates to remember: Current Grade Date Materials Distributed Date Course Selections are Due Grade 8 Wednesday, January 25, 2017 Wednesday, February 1, 2017 Grade 9 Thursday, January 26, 2017 Thursday, February 2, 2017 Just a reminder that the first semester grading period ends on January 18th. Grades recorded as of this date will become part of the permanent academic record for students. This impacts our Freshman the most since credits earned this year apply to earning a Lincoln High School diploma three years from now. With approximately two weeks remaining this semester, it is important for students to continue to work on obtaining the academic goals estab- lished for them. It is not too late for scores just below passing to be raised to earn credit but real- ize that this will take additional time and effort on the part of the students for this to occur. Please continue to provide support, encouragement, and conversations with your children as they work to achieve academic success. With the start of a new semester on January 23rd, ALL students will start with a clean academic record. Most students will have new classes start- ing and the day will have the feel of the first day of school again. It is important to recognize that this fresh start means that no first semester grades carry over and work done beginning with this day will all be part of the second semester grades. SEMESTER 1 REPORT CARDS The Semester 1 grading period is set to end on January 18. Grades will be posted on Skyward no later than January 22. Recall that grades for the semester are cumulative grades that are broken into 3 grading peri- ods. As a reminder, paper copies of the S1 report will not be mailed home. Important News for Freshman… The Registration Expo will be held in conjunc-tion with Parent Teacher Conferences at LHS. Tables will be set up for each department spe-cifically for registration questions. The expo will be held on Monday, January 23 from 5:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. in the LHS fieldhouse. It is an excellent opportunity for students (grades 9, 10, and 11) and their parents to learn about courses at LHS, the registration process, and gather important information about educa-tional opportunities. Please attend and bring your son or daughter. Teachers from each de-partment at LHS, counselors, and administra-tion will be available to answer all of your questions. Be sure you have had discussions with your child about their career plans and what they want to do after graduation. These discussions will go a long way when making sure students are taking rich, rig-orous, and appropriate courses that will meet their goals. We look forward to seeing you.

The cut-off for passing grades to qualify for the movie will be at the end of the day on Tuesday, January 10. Students who turn in work or take assessments after that date may still achieve a passing grade for the semester, but won’t be eligible for the movie. Please encourage your child to talk with their teachers, turn in missing home-work and complete projects and assess-

ments BEFORE THE JANU-ARY 10 DEADLINE! Any student who does not qualify for the movie, will use the time to work with classroom teachers on incomplete work, projects or assessments in an effort to raise their final grade.

Parent Teacher conferences have been set for the spring. Please mark you calendars for the following dates:

Beginning of 2nd Semester

Monday, January 23

During the 2017-2018 School Year, freshmen students will be operating under a trimester schedule that will have each ninth grade student enrolled in five classes each day. Each class will run for approximately seventy minutes in length for twelve weeks. This will be defined as the first tri-mester. During the first trimester, freshmen students will earn one-half

credit for each course they pass. After twelve weeks, students will be enrolled in five new classes for another twelve weeks, or the second trimester. Again, one-half credit can be earned for each course passed during the second trimester. For the third trimester lasting twelve weeks and beginning in March, students can earn an additional two and one-half cred-its by passing all of their five courses during this term. Under our current system, ninth grade students have seven classes each day and can earn a maximum of seven credits each year. Under the new schedule beginning with the 2017-2018 School Year, ninth grade students will have five classes each day and can earn two and one-half credits each of the three trimester terms thus totaling seven and one-half credits each year. This new schedule is the same schedule that the students and teaching staff are using at Lin-coln High School to earn credits toward a Lincoln High School Diploma. As a building, we are looking forward to providing a consistent high school curriculum for all WRPS students earning credit toward a diploma. This change will also provide consistent teaching schedules for staff travelling between Lincoln High School and East, common grad-ing periods, and the same learning expectations for all students taking the class for high school credit.
