Charitable Gift Annuities Would you like a safe and secure way of providing financial support to your aging parents? Do you feel it is time to “give back”. If so, a charitable gift annuity (CGA) may be just the solution. A CGA can provide payments to your aging parents now and a gift to their parish later. It will provide you both with peace of mind and also an income tax deduction. For more information about making a gift, please call the Theresa Lynch, Planned Giving Manager, at (973) 497-4042 or [email protected].

Wisdom of the Saints Whoever governs their passions is master of the world. We must either command them, or be commanded by them. It is better to be the hammer than the anvil.

We cannot separate love for God from love of man. We acknowledge God easily, but our brother? Those with whom we don not identify in his background, education, race, complex-ion. We could not have imagined that love for God could be so hard.

Men, Is God Calling you to the Diaconate? I am happy to inform you that the time has come to prepare for a new class of candidates to study for the permanent diaconate in the Archdiocese of Newark. This Fall men interest-ed in being ordained deacons will begin the discernment year which will lead to the formation of a new class by the Spring of 2016. You may obtain the Application Form and the Pastor's Recommendation Form from Fr. Paul. There will also be an organizational meeting to be held by Fr. Teti and Deacon Andy Saunders on October 3, 2015 at 11 AM at Annunciation Church, Paramus in the lower church. J T Last week as I celebrated the Holy Mass for the repose of a police officer, a man who served his community in upholding the peace, gave his time to the Knights of Columbus and the Elks, and was active in many fund raisers to help those in need, it made me won-der: Why has community and even equally Church community deteriorated in Western civilization? The thought that came to my mind was INDIVIDUALISM. We have become a society so en-amored with the individual and his rights, that we have forgotten the community and the common good. Of course many still have concern for their neighbors, are still involved with community pro-jects (from politics to the environment), but the majority of people have turned in on themselves. We as a society are no longer a so-ciety, but rather a loosely gathered crowd of strangers. I see this analogously in the suburb. In the city people are close. They socialize because of their proximity. Need a favor? Go next door. Have a problem? Go down the block and there is some-one to help - a priest, a doctor, a friend, and even a relative. In the country, people are spread out far and wide. They are rugged indi-viduals, but they come together to unite forces. Church is a gather-ing place, country fairs are a place to share one's produce and com-municate. If you don't get to know your neighbors who live miles away, you may just perish out of loneliness. Yet the suburb which was a beautiful concept with its white picket fences and personal fiefdoms, turned out in time to be walled yards, neighbors who do not know each other. The suburbanite is the epitome of the indi-vidualist. I have my space you have yours and I hope we don't step on each others' grass. When I was in seminary, the late Fr. Benedict Groeschel said to us, "Men, the rectory is not a community, it is a neighbor-hood. And after supper each of you will go off to your rooms and lock the door." Fr. Groeschel's statement resonates with my idea of society. We are no longer a community but a neighborhood and when our required or necessary interactions are over, we go our own ways and lock the doors. Now, I can speculate some reasons for this -- from air-conditioning and computer games to liberalism and subjectivism. Look at older society, not even 50 years ago. If you were to listen to music, is was on a phonograph or radio, but now ten individuals can listen on ten iPods to ten different songs. Music, around which people gathered and sang, is now an individual act. When I was young we played games: monopoly, puzzles, Scrabble, touch football, built forts in the woods, hunted frogs, fished at the pond, had fights, swam in the creek... today children stay inside and watch TV, play computer games, chat on Facebook or tweet. Their play time is scheduled as mommy drives them across town because there are so few children in the neighborhood. With this technology aimed at the pleasure of the individ-ual (hedonism) and the philosophy of (extreme) individualism ex-pressed in liberalism, moral subjectivism, libertinism, freethinking, egoism, and even anarchism has led to the disintegration of com-munity and since Church is community, she too suffers gravely from this school of thought. Individualism emphasizes the moral worth of the individ-ual who is a person separate from other persons and has his own needs, goals, and desires. There is nothing contrary to Christian thought here. God has called us by name. Individualism values independence and self-reliance and advocates that interests of the individual should take precedence over the state or a social group. Individualism believes that the human individual is of primary importance. It involves the right of the individual to freedom and self-realization. At this point Christian thought may diverge. The witness of the martyrs demonstrates the importance of Church and belief in Christ and the goodness of one dying for the love and for the salvation of others. [To Be Continued]

OCTAVE OF OUR LADY OF THE ASSUMPTION

Once again this August we will have vigil candles in honor of Our Lady’s Assumption and Corona-tion from August 15 until August 22. Vigil Can-dles will be on sale Aug 1-2 and 8-9 for only $5.00. Please inscribe your intentions on the label of the candle and return it. The candle will be placed at Our Lady’s Altar and will burn during the octave. Our Lady Queen of Heaven, pray for us. Also, we will be praying the Octave of Mary, Untier of Knots before every Mass. This

devotion to our Blessed Mother, a favorite of Pope Francis, begs the Blessed Mother to unravel the knots of our life. GOD’S WORK We are so busy! Most of us have more than one job to do, and we never seem to have enough time. We are workers, volun-teers, parents, friends, and most of us are more than one thing at a time. But which of these is the work of God? We seldom view our ordinary work as being the work of God. We may think that we have to be ministers or priests, mis-sionaries or charity workers, engaged full-time in works formal-ly identified as being “God’s work.” But everything we do with a faithful heart and with love for others is God’s work. We each have our own role to fill in the world, and many gifts are neces-sary. We cannot always see the direct connection of our daily work to the plan of God. But we trust and we believe that God leads us to do what is needed, where it is needed. What is “God’s work?” “This is the work of God, that you believe in the one he sent” (John 6:29).
