For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him might not perish but might have eternal life (John 3:16) “Eugenics” is a word from the Greek meaning good birth. It is the belief and practice which aims at improving the genetic quality of the human population through the promotion of higher reproduction of people with desired traits and reduced reproduction of people with less-desired or undesired traits. There are two types of eugenics: Positive which en-courages reproduction among the genetically advantaged; through demographics, in vitro fertilization, egg transplants, and cloning. Negative eugenics eliminates, through sterilization, abortion, contraception, segregation and other methods of fami-ly planning, those deemed physically, mentally, or morally "undesirable". A common criticism of eugenics is that it inevitably leads to unethical measures. For example, if one minority group were perceived on average less intelligent than another majority group, then the minority group would be submitted to a eugenics program. Adolf Hitler used eugenics to eliminate the mentally disabled, Jews, homosexuals, gypsies, classifying them as sub-human or a burden on society. In the Soviet Union political ad-versaries were classified as mentally disturbed and exiled to Siberia. At its peak of popularity, eugenics was supported by a wide variety of prominent people. Margaret Sanger, the foundress of Planned Parenthood, desired that minorities be giv-en contraception. From 1939 to 1942 Sanger was supervisor of the Negro Project, an effort to deliver birth control to poor black people to further her campaign of reducing the African Ameri-can population. Adolf Hitler praised and incorporated eugenic ideas in Mein Kampf and emulated eugenic legislation for the sterilization of "defectives" that had been pioneered in the Unit-ed States. On the other hand, abortion for "fit" women, was ille-gal in Nazi Germany. But eugenics had many critics. A Catholic English writer GK Chesterton harshly criticized eugenics in his book Eugenics and Other Evils in 1917. On January 6, 2015, the Wall Street Journal had an article Pregnant Women Face a Confusing Array of Genetic Tests, by Bonnie Rochman, p. D1. It said, "Now companies that offer carrier screening are promoting the idea that testing every-one [fathers & mothers] for many diseases is a more effective way to reduce the number of babies [via abortion] born with serious disorders, including cystic fibrosis, a life-limiting lung condition, and Canavan disease, a fatal neurological disorder." In simple English, if your unborn baby has a genetic disease abort it. The piece goes on to say, "Scientists keep identifying new gene mutations or variations, associated with specific dis-eases." The cost for these tests can range from $600 to $1500. In other words there is lots of money to be had. It also states that most rare diseases have no known treatment or cure. In other words, it argues that since a disease cannot be cured, then the final solution is to kill the patient. The article ended with a strange statement of a mother whose child suffers a fatal ail-ment. "Ms. Gold, 32, wasn't tested to see if she and her partner were carriers of Canavan disease, which has left her son unable to support his own head or sit up. 'I was angry at not being test-ed,' she says. 'But of course I love him.'" Ironic, isn’t it! She laments the opportunity to abort the child but loves him anyway. Would she euthanize the child now if it were legal? Would the deliberate ending of this child's life and therefore his suffering, be a loving act? With our technology we are moving ever closer to knowing ever more, but with knowledge comes responsibility. When Adam and Eve took the apple, they now knew Good and

OLD PALMS Please return your old palms to the church by February 1. We will burn them and use the ashes for Ash Wednesday which is February 18.

Evil. But knowing what is good and evil is not enough, we need the grace and reason to discern good from evil in order to make sound, good and loving decisions, not based on misplaced sym-pathy, or confusing mercy with mercy-killing. A genetic anoma-ly, a mental disability, or suffering and imminent death do not make any of us less deserving of life and the natural right to die naturally. There is no perfect genome, no perfect human being and no perfect life. The only thing we can be sure of is that God does love us no matter our condition, our genetic make up or our social status.

Pax Christi, Fr. Paul

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Old customs fade slowly, and in 1560 the Council of Trent tried for significant change in pastoral care of the sick. People resisted, thinking that the last breath was the right time for the sacrament. Although physical improve-ment was often noted after anointing, it was seen as a kind of bonus, rather than an expected outcome of a prayer for good health, strength, patience, and even healing. More than four hundred years later, many people still do not ask for anointing until it is literally too late for the person to have reasonable hope of healing, or at least be aware enough to participate in the ritual. By then, it may even be too late for viaticum, the true “last rite.” We have a treasure in our tradition that we seem reluc-tant to use. We visit the sick, we anoint those who are in the first crisis of illness, we give Communion to those who are dying, and we keep vigil and pray for those close to death. When anointing is celebrated early enough, optimal-ly when the sick person is still at Sunday Mass, it can be a source of courage, faith, and hope for a difficult road ahead. When we anoint our sick, we remind them that they belong to Christ and a community of faith. We bring them into the presence of Christ to reconcile, heal, and give strength and hope. We resist forces that isolate and alienate

the sick; the symbol of touch is a powerful act of ac-ceptance. Why wait until the crisis of illness is dire before we apply such a rich remedy to body and soul? —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S.

ROSARIO Y HORA SANTA En Reparación del Pecado del Aborto

Capilla 7:00 PM Jueves

22 enero 2015

Fr. Mayhel Velasquez
