STRENGTHENED BY THE BREAD OF LIFE Today we resume the “Bread of Life” discourse from John’s Gospel that began two weeks ago. He makes refer-ence to the Jews’ ancestors who ate manna in the desert. These days we would think primarily of Israel wandering in the desert, but faithful Jews would also have known the story of Elijah that we hear today. Strengthened by food and drink in the desert, the angel of the Lord sends him on his forty-day and forty-night journey (the biblical number for a preparation time). Like the food given to Elijah in the desert, Jesus tells his listeners that he is bread for the life of the world. It is very important that we not stop listening to Jesus after his promise of eternal life—a marvelous prom-ise, but this “reward” is not the only reason we feast on the Bread of Life. We also come to the table to be made strong for the journey of mission, that the whole world might have life in the fullness of Christ. We are compelled, if we have eaten of the bread of life, to go forth in service to all.

Holy Day of Obligation To celebrate the Virgin Mary, having completed the course of her earth-ly life, and being assumed body and soul into heavenly glory, we will: 1. Celebrate Mass on August 15 at 7:30 PM,

followed by a C L R P - around the church. Bring your im-

ages of our Lady in procession. 2. Pray the N M , U K

after all Masses from August 15 through August 22 (Feast of the Coronation of the Virgin Mary) or at home [On August 15, at 7:30 Mass, it will be prayed before Mass]

In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. -Amen

Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory be...

Let us ask our Heavenly Mother to assist those who are having difficulties with the knots in their lives. For those having marriage troubles, we pray: Mary, Untier of Knots, pray for us. For those struggling with employment & financial problems, we pray: For those striving to persevere in the faith, we pray: For those suffering from illness, we pray: For those combating addiction & behavioral problems, we pray: For those dealing with loneliness, we pray: For those burdened with fears and worries, we pray: For those suffering discord in the family, we pray: For those overwhelmed by anguish or despair, we pray: For those victimized by violence or neglect, we pray: For those targeted by bigotry, we pray: For those struggling to let go of grudges, we pray: For those seeking to make peace, we pray: For the knots in our own lives, we pray: Holy Mary, full of the presence of God, during your life you accepted with great humility the Holy Will of the Father and the legacy of your Son Our Lord Jesus Christ. Evil never dared to entangle you with its confusion. Since then, you have interceded for all of our difficulties. With all simplicity and patience you have given us examples on how to untangle the knots in our complicated lives. By being our Mother forever, you arrange and make clear the path that unites us to Our Lord. Holy Mary, Mother of God and our Mother, with your maternal heart untie the knots that upset our lives. We ask you to receive in your hands (mention who or prayer request in your heart) and deliver us from the chains and confusions that have us restrained. Blessed Virgin Mary, through your grace, your intercession and by your example, deliver us from evil, and untie the knots that keep us from unit-ing with God, so that once free of every confusion and error, we may find Him in all things, have Him in our hearts, and serve him always in our brothers and sisters. Amen Mother of Good Counsel --pray for us Through the intercession of Holy Mary, Untier of Knots, may almighty God bless you (us), the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit. - Amen

D id you realize that when we receive the Eucharist we are in communion with God and with the Church? Yes, when we consume the Sacred Species we consume Jesu in all his di-

vinity. In reality we become one with Jesus, our Lord and our God and so we become divine, united through this communion to the di-vinity of Christ as well as his humanity. This is why it is so important to be in the state of Grace. To receive with mortal sin on our con-science or to receive because our state in life is contrary to Church discipline is to imply that what we receive has no real consequences. Also in receiving we became one with the Church, that mystical body of Christ which consists of the faithful baptized. Now while none of us are holy, none of us are worthy, none of us are sinless, the Church herself is the sinless bride of Christ. And as a woman and man become one in the Sacrament of Matrimony, we become one in the sharing of the Eucharist—Communion, literally meaning one with. So it is incumbent upon us to seek out reconciliation with oth-ers and with God. If the breech is wide due to serious sin, especially mortal sin, then we must go to the Sacrament of Reconciliation and confess our misdeeds. If the breech is venial (minor), a simple act of penance or of love will wipe it away. So when we receive the Blessed Sacrament know that you come into union with Christ (God-man) and his Church. Ponder that for a mo-ment and believe.

Pax Christi, Fr. Paul

Take courage, He is calling you! Healing the Wounds of Abortion

The psychological and spiritual wounds from abortion can be vast and crippling. You may feel stuck in life and not know why, or even numb, not able to name the buried pain or recog-nize the symptoms of post abortion syndrome. An abortion can often have a devastating impact on the father and grandparents of the aborted child and the friend/s of their parents, as well. Do not continue to hide in shame, fear or confusion. The Rachel’s Vineyard retreat is a chance to focus on this difficult time in your life while moving you through a non-judgmental group process. This is done in a supportive atmosphere with confidentiality, understanding, and compassion. The program is designed to help both women and men to revive their hope by experiencing the tender mercy of God in Christ Jesus. If you are suffering from a past abortion experience and have isolated yourself from help and forgiveness, we’ve been there! Consider attending one of the upcoming retreat weekends here in the archdiocese.

ANGER’S OFFSPRING As long as anger lives, she continues to be the fruitful mother of many unhappy children.

—St. John Climacus

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Careful readers of the “Treasures” will have noticed that the two columns about the oldest monastic communities in the United States refer to the colonial states. The Louisiana Purchase gained a great treasure for our nation, the Ursuline monastery of New Orleans. Among the greatest pioneers of that city were nuns who came from France on a perilous voyage in 1727, pestered by pirates and tossed by fearsome storms. These were genteel, well-educated Ursulines, yet their first task was to roll up their sleeves and open a hospital to care for the pestilence-ridden colony. Next, they opened a school for girls and launched a plan to educate the women being shipped over from France to marry settlers. In this way, they had enormous influence in molding patterns of family and domestic life. At Christmastime in 1814, the threat of a British assault on the city was growing. On the terrifying night of January 7, 1815, the wom-en of New Orleans gathered in the monastery chapel to pray that the city be spared from destruction in battle. The mother superior made a vow to have a Mass of Thanksgiving on that date every year should the Americans win. That night, Our Lady of Prompt Succor, to whom the nuns had great devotion, became the protector and patron of this great city. The convent in the French Quarter is the oldest standing building in the Mississippi valley, and the only surviving building of the French colonial period. The nuns relocated in 1824, but their old monastery is preserved as a museum and archives for the Archdiocese of New Orle-ans. The school the nuns began, Ursuline Academy, is the oldest con-tinuously operating Catholic school, and school for women, in the United States.
