Distance Learning Instructions Period 2 – Women’s Chorus Week 1 – April 13-17 th Letter from Shanker: First, thank you so much to those who were able to join me on Zoom in week 1 and help me trouble shoot all the technology. It was really hard to figure out if pages and documents were visible and functioning correctly by myself. By day 3, I think I got it all set. I appreciate your patience and your emails and texts when something wasn’t working. Without you, I would not know it needed fixing! We tried many different ways of getting to documents and turning in homework and I can see what is and isn’t working for the majority of you. I am including a section in this week’s instructions about where to find things and how to turn your work in for those that are still unclear. Please don’t panic if your work didn’t make it in on time. I understand! With this week’s instructions hopefully clarifying more info for you, I hope to see late work roll in Monday & Tuesday. Please also remember that you are now your own boss, motivational cheerleader, and procrastinating obstacle. Distance learning is so much more complicated for some of you. Set up a set time to work and a time to have fun in your weekdays. Stick to it and get your work done early so the pressure is off at the end of the week. I understand how tough it is to live with a procrastination guy sitting on your shoulder telling you to do the fun stuff before the work. If I can conquer him, so can you! Zoom meetings will be announced using Remind and the email address you use to access the google drive files. Stay tuned for our next Q & A opportunity. You must put your First Name and Last Initial into Zoom so when you are seen in the waiting room, Shanker will recognize you and allow you in. Zoom meetings will be locked after the first ten minutes from the scheduled start time for security reasons. You will not be able to enter if you are 10+ minutes late. The gradebook has a weighted system by category. That means assignments are put into a category and that category counts for a certain percentage of your total grade. Because of this drastic shift to distance learning, I have had to alter the categories to fit with the new types of work you will be doing for the rest of the year. There is no longer a Performance/Concerts category. Unfortunately, we will not be able to hold our Spring concerts or any events for the duration of the school year. I’ve split one category into two separate categories: Sight Reading and Written Work. I’ve also added a “Projects” category. While this adjustment may have just thrown your grade into a weird percentage, please allow the first grades from distance learning to go in and re-balance the total. Your new categories look like this: 20% Rehearsal Techniques / Practice Logs 15% Voice Tests 10% Sight Reading 30% Written Work 10% Written Tests and Quizzes 15% Projects Homework is due on Mondays and will not start to be graded until that Monday. If you see in the Aeries gradebook an assignment has been marked “done grading” and you don’t have a grade, that is the time to email Shanker and make sure I found your file in the drive, email, etc. Until then, don’t expect confirmation emails. Don’t expect your grades to magically appear on Monday morning. It’s not realistic. You had a week to do your assignments. Shanker needs a week to grade them. Be kind to your teachers, and remember: Don’t Panic! (see Douglas Adams’ book “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy” – it is also a movie/mini-series.

Distance Learning Instructions Period 2 – Women’s Chorus

Week 1 – April 13-17th Letter from Shanker:

First, thank you so much to those who were able to join me on Zoom in week 1 and help me trouble shoot all the technology.

Your Turn In Folder on Google Drive: I have created a folder for each student in my google drive and titled them “P2 – Your Name”. Your folder is only viewable and editable by you and Mrs. Shanker. You will be able to upload files to this folder or create new word or spreadsheet documents to turn in assignments.

- To find the folder, you must log in to the google drive with the same address you use to access the learning tracks. If you are not sure which address you need to use or you are having trouble, please contact Mrs. Shanker via Remind text or email.

o It is best to use a Gmail address to access the google drive because your files are linked to your email account.

o Non Gmail addresses will need to access the following folders through a shared link that you will be emailed. It is too easy to lose track of that link. Perhaps bookmark the page once you access it?

- Once you are logged in, look at the left side of the screen (desktop version) and you will see “My Drive”. This is where the files you create or upload are stored.

- Underneath “My Drive” is “Shared with Me”. Click here to see files and folders that other people have created and shared with you. You should see your class folder “Women’s Chorus 2019-20” and your new personal folder “P2 – Your Name”.

- Your personal turn in folder: o The best way to turn in assignments that are not already in a google form is to put

them in your “P2 – Your Name” folder. Any scans or pictures of your work or recordings can be uploaded here instead of emailed.

o You may see that Mrs. Shanker has already pushed some of the files you sent via email into your folder.

o Now comes the organizational assignment: § I need you to make a folder inside your personal folder for your first week’s

work and title it “Week 1”. § Then drag and drop all your work from week 1 into that folder so it is not in the

way of week 2’s work. § While you are at it, go ahead and make another folder and title it “Week 2” so

you can prepare for this week. § Every week you will add another folder for that week’s assignments.

- Class Folder “Women’s Chorus 2019-20”: o First, nothing in this folder can be edited, added to, modified, or deleted by a student.

These documents must remain “Read/See Only” so that everyone has access to the original clean file.

o Within this class folder you will see folders named for all the songs in our repertoire. Open any of these to find a digital copy (pdf) of the sheet music in case you are one of the 40 people who left their folder at school.

o You will also find the learning tracks in these sub folders. Please note that sometimes certain devices will play only part of the learning track in the google drive application. If you are having this problem, I highly recommend you download the track for your part and the ALL track and put it into iTunes or your chosen media player in a folder

marked “Women’s Chorus”. This will also reduce the amount of data you use on your phone by downloading it only once.

o There is a new folder here called “Distance Learning Files”. While I am obligated to put all needed files into a pdf on the Heritage webpage, this is where you will find a second copy of the same pdf as well as smaller files in various formats which may allow you to more easily complete the assignments should you be unable to print worksheets.

§ For example: The Practice Log in the pdf packet can be downloaded to your computer and opened in Preview or Acrobat. Both these applications should allow you to add text on top of the page and fill it out digitally. Then you could save it to your turn in folder in the google drive.

§ If that isn’t working for you, there is also a spreadsheet version of the practice log in this folder. You cannot edit any document in the class folder, but you CAN “Make A Copy” by right clicking or control clicking on it. The google drive will automatically move the new copy into your “My Drive” section. Then you can right click and move it to your turn in folder.

• When trying to move a file, click left out of “My Drive” and you will then be able to click into “Shared with Me”.

- There is a Google Drive app you can download onto smart phones to make it easier to upload recordings and pictures to your turn in personal folder. I highly recommend it.

o In my app on an apple device, there is a menu bar at the bottom of the screen. If you click on the two people, it will bring up the files that have been share to you from someone else. That’s the “Shared with Me” section.

Composer Worksheet: This week you will learn about Franz Schubert. - Fun Activity: Eat sorbet (sherbet) while learning about Schubert. - Turn In:

o The best way to answer the eight questions is to go to the new website and type your answers directly into the google form.

o https://sites.google.com/view/hhschoir-vocalmusic o There is also a video in the new website of Franz Schubert’s “Erlkonig” (Erl King) and

one of Schubert’s “Ave Maria” as sung by Haley Westenra, Bryn Terfel, and Jose Carreras. Listen and enjoy!

Sound Trap (Online Application like Garage Band) - Everyone is getting a 120-day free student trial linked to my teacher account of the online

application called Sound Trap. This is a very similar application to Garage Band. You should be able to download it as an app on smart phones as well as access it on an internet browser.

- You will be able to create a user log in by going to: www.soundtrap.com/invite/B2QLYDQ o If you already have a log in, you can use this web address to add the full trial version to

your current account. It won’t lose any of your saved projects. - You are now in my Women’s Chorus Group on Sound Trap. Yay! Now we can record

individual voices and compile them into a much larger project.

Page 4: Distance Learning Instructions Period 2 – Women’s …...Distance Learning Instructions Period 2 – Women’s Chorus Week 1 – April 13-17th Letter from Shanker: First, thank

- I’d like you to watch some of the “how to” videos that explain the many things Sound Trap can do. If you are familiar with Garage Band, it is VERY similar. There is a video called “Crash Course” that is eight minutes long. It is a mash up of shorter videos called “Audio”, “Tracks”, “Regions”, “Piano Roll” and “Collaboration”. You can watch them all back to back or individually. The instructions are very fast!

Record Using Sound Trap:

- TASK: Record yourself singing your part of the "Will the Circle Be Unbroken". (the whole song) - There are learning tracks and a pdf of the sheet music in the google drive folder for practice. - Open Sound Trap either in a web browser or in the app on your phone.

o Here is the link to the assignment project: https://www.soundtrap.com/studio/assignment/v4Sl59LPQdSeAjxSelsT9Q/

- Before you can do this assignment, Shanker will need to invite your account to the project. Please get your account set up with the link above and give Shanker a chance to click through everyone to invite you!

o Once you are invited, you will see the invite on your home Sound Trap page. o You need to click “Accept”.

- You will need to wear headphones. - Click the headphones button on the track for your part to hear only your track (solo). - Click the headphones on the track labeled “Director Count In” to hear Shanker give you a

count before the singing begins. This will help you start on time with the learning tracks. - At the bottom I have added a voice recording track. Click on the microphone symbol at the

left side of the “Your Voice” track to pull up the settings for this track. There is a drop-down menu to choose what microphone input you will be using. Most people will be using the built-in internal microphone on your device. If you happen to have a nice computer connected (USB) microphone, you could select that device for the recording.

o Don’t change the Reverb, Pan, or Volume. I will edit these later. - Make sure the cursor on the track is all the way to the left before you click Record. And make

sure you have clicked on the voice track you will be recording on or it may try to record over a different track.

o You may stop and start your recording to fix your errors. I recommend recording until you make a mistake, then backing up to your breath before the mistake and putting the cursor there to start recording after the good section.

o A good way to make your last recording blend with the new recording is to sing the phrase before the cursor records so you have a running start and a good tone.

- Tenors, there are two tracks, one for Tenor 1s and one for Tenor 2s. I see that the Tenor 1 track is very quiet at the beginning, but the Tenor 2 track is pretty loud. You could all listen to the Tenor 2 track until the Tenor 1s need to sing separate notes and then you can mute/unmute tracks to suit what you need to hear to sing your part correctly.

- Turn In: This is a first time experimental project, so I’m not actually sure how to “turn in” this assignment! You will need to save it after you record or it will delete all your work. You will also need to put your real, full name into your account profile so I can see who’s recording I am looking at.

Practice Log:

- The Practice Log should be filled out daily as you practice your choir music with the learning tracks in the google drive.

o You can print it and write by hand § If printed, take a picture or scan and upload the week's log to your personal turn

in folder “P2 – Your Name”. o You can fill in the spreadsheet form in your personal google folder online.

§ Go to the class’ folder “Women’s Chorus 2019-20” then open “Distance Learning Files” then “Week 2 Files”. You will see the spreadsheet version of the Practice Log. You can right click or control click on it to make a copy. That copy will go to your main “My Drive” page and from there you can “Move to” your personal turn in folder and begin editing.

§ Instructions are written at the top of the log page. § Your total practice time per week is 30 minutes minimum. § Yes, the Spring Concerts are canceled, but those of you in choir for the first year, still

need to learn “New Beginnings”. We perform this song every year at the end of our Spring Concerts and we invite the alumni from our program to join us as we sing to our graduating seniors. I’d like you to learn it so that you will be able to either sing it with us next year in the spring concert as a regular choir member or perhaps as an alumni of the program!

§ Fill in the questions at the bottom of the page to reflect on the use of your time and your progress.

§ Have your parent or guardian sign off on each week's rehearsal times at the end of Friday. A digital typed signature is fine. This is an honor system. I hope you value our practice time as I do and will honestly complete this log.

Notation Unit 3: Lesson 1 – Treble Clef Note Names

- First, I’m sorry, but you ARE going to need to print out the entire Unit 3 packet and Quiz worksheets. I know this may be a struggle for some of you without access to printers or paper or ink or any number of things. For this reason, I need you to reach out to me if you are struggling just to be able to print this packet. I am here to find a way!

- I have found an instructional video that is on the new website. It walks you through how the names of the notes are assigned and structured on the treble clef. Please watch it and read through the lesson page and take notes. Notes names and music notation is very logically structured, but as we have said in class before, some of our brains like straight line logic and some like loopy creative paths instead. If you get stuck, please reach out for help.

o Here is the link if you want to type it: https://youtu.be/7Bv-JiFnoJ4 - You will need to complete the review pages 30 and 31 as well as Quiz 23 by physically writing

on the page. Then take a picture or scan to turn in and upload them into your personal google drive turn in folder “P2 – Your Name”.

Turn In Checklist: (All work is due on the following Monday April 20th.)

- Create “Week 1” and “Week 2” folders within your turn in google drive folder “P2 – Name”. - Composer: Shubert Worksheet – Type Answers on Google Form on New Website - Recording of Will the Circle Be Unbroken (full song) – Use www.SoundTrap.com
