Donate Old Cell Phones to Save Gorillas

By Katrina Rasmussen

Phones. We use them every day, really. What we don’t think about, though is where the materials that we use to make them come from. If I told you that right now, a for-est where the endangered gorilla lives in the Democratic Republic of Con-go is being cut down to make the device you might be hold-ing right now, would you be

lieve me? Well, my previous statement is true. And illegal. In order to make your phone performs at quicker speeds, an element called coltan (columbute + tantalum) has 80% of it naturally forming RIGHT where gorillas live. In order to get this rare mineral, miners need to create roads in the forests where those gorillas live in order to be able to access it. By cutting down most of the trees in these forests, gorillas are forced to move, an effort that puts them at a greater risk of extinction. Gorillas are on the line. And we need you to an-swer the call.

You can help these gorillas by donating old cell phones to any Grant School Environ-ment Club member. There will be a collection bin in Grant to put any phones you might want to donate. Our collection ends 3/15/19.

“Gorillas are on the line. And we need you to an-swer the call.”

The Grant School Winter Concert

By Camila Chavez

The Grant School Winter Concert has been a blast! Taking place in the High School, there were six groups: 5th grade band, 5th grade orchestra, 6th grade band, 6th grade orchestra, jazz band, and chorus.

For a bit of information be-fore I let you in on what songs each group played, let me tell you what instruments there are in each group. In orchestra, there are violins, violas, cellos, and basses. In band there are drums, clari-nets, oboes, flutes, tubas, tenor saxophones, French horns, trumpets, and trom-bones. In jazz band, there are drums, a drum set, saxo-phones, trumpets, trom-

bones, clarinets, flutes, and a violin.

Now, for the songs. First, the 5th grade orchestra played “Autumn,” “Greensleeves,” and “Russian Music Box.” After that, the 6th grade or-chestra played “Mexican Hol-iday,” “Ukrainian Bell Carol,” and “Linus and Lucy.” Then, the chorus sang “I’ve Lost My Homework,” “Just Be Hap-py,” and “Snow Day.” Next, the jazz band played “Drama For Your Mamma.” After-ward, the 5th grade band played “Jingle Bells,” “My Dreidel,” “Old McDonald had a Band,” “Ode to Joy,” and “Frosty the Snowman.” Last but not least, the 6th grade band played “Variations on Theme” by Mozart, “Up on a Housetop,” “Jolly Old Saint Nick,” “Banana Boat Song,” “Aura Lee,” and “Ding Dong Merrily on High.”

According to Mrs. Butrico, the school nurse, “I loved it! Everybody did great, and I loved the songs. I liked that there was a mix of holiday and regular music. It enter-tained all ages!” Tatiana R., a 5th grade stu-dent said, “I really enjoyed the concert. It was fun, and the stage was huge!” All the group directors, in-cluding Mrs. Maddolin, Mrs. Stasio, and Mr. Tweed have to start planning what new songs the groups are going to play for the spring concert to keep up with the great work they have done this time. I cannot wait for the next concert!

Drama Club

By Gertrude Whalen

Have you ever thought about joining the Drama Club? Well if you have, here are the de-tails! The show that the club will be performing spring is ...Bye Bye Birdie! It is a musical so there will be a lot of singing. Some of the songs include “Put on a Happy Face,” “English Teacher,” “How Lovely to be a Women,” “Healthy Normal American Boy,” “Honestly Sincere,” “One Last Kiss,” “A Lot of

Livin’ to Do,” “Kids,” and “Telephone Hour.” The main characters are Rosie Alva-rez, Conrad Birdie, and Al-bert Peterson. This play will take place April 16 and 17 at the Grant School in the auditorium. The production team is run by Mrs. Maddolin. The cast is run by Mrs. Stasio and Mrs. Eichert. A student that is in Drama Club thinks this way about drama, “I really love drama, and would recommend it to anyone else who wishes to be in the spotlight!” Also an-other student from the

production team/ stage crew, feels this way about drama: “I really doing the stage crew, I am in the publicity crew, I enjoy making the flyers and the tick-ets. I think this activity is a great way for people that want to in-teract with the play but not be on stage. I think the play is very organized, the props are really realistic, and it gives someone that would want to be an ac-tress/ actor a start. Overall I think the drama club is great!”

Holiday Boutique

By Milla Popovych

This year, the Holiday Bou-tique was amazing! The Grant School PTO bought items from Kids’ Kastle, a company that sells holiday gifts to schools for students to buy. The PTO set up some tables in Gym 2, and sold the items to students. There were gifts for everyone in the boutique: mom, dad, sis-ter(s), brother(s), grandpar-ents, uncle(s), aunt(s), cousin(s), and of course, your friends! The Holiday Boutique was on December 10th for 5th grad-ers during their special peri-od, and on December 11th for 6th graders during their special period. On December 12th, both 5th and 6th grad-ers could go during their lunch period.

One reason schools have Holiday Boutiques, is be-cause students can't drive to stores to buy gifts for their family and friends, unless an adult drives them to the store. And you don't want your parents to know what the present is, do you? An-other reason schools have Holiday Boutiques, is be-cause money that they make, they use it for school activi-ties, school improvements, etc.

Fifth grader Jill says, “I loved the Holiday Boutique! It had so many cool things! My fa-vorite part was the jewelry section. I also liked the slimes!”

The Holiday Boutique is a great opportunity for students to get into the “Joy Of Giv-ing.”

“The Holiday Boutique is a great opportunity for students to get into the “Joy Of Giving.”’

Should Phones be Used in School?

By Jill Patel

This issue is being debated because since your phones are in your lockers during the school day, you might be tempted to use them. However, others think that being allowed to use phones during the school day would disturb their study. Some teachers also say that phones should not be used because then kids will not study or pay attention in class.

Some kids think they should be allowed. One fifth grader says, “Sometimes

you need to get in touch with your parents.” Students would need to keep in touch with their parents because they might worry about their kids during the day. Also, parents might want to know if their kids are in a club after school.

Some parents think that phones should not be used in school. They think

they would distract the kids. Even though older students in high school may have access to their phones in class, using them for anything besides academics can lead to low grades. One parent claims, “If kids use phones in class, then lots of them get bad grades.”

This debate is important because lots of kids are getting phones at a early age and everyone wants to use them all the time, even at school.

Now after reading about the debate over whether students should have access to their phones in class or not , has it changed your mind about this topic? While cell phones will remain in their lockers for students at Grant School, express your opinion after reading this! School Uniforms vs. Regular Clothes

By Alizeh Sajid

Do you like the idea of wearing uniforms to school, or do you like to wear your normal home clothes? Some people say that uniforms make it easier on your morning routine. Oth-ers say that casual home clothes show your personality. So whose side are you on?

*EDITOR’S NOTE: The views expressed are those of the student writer.*

Pro-Regular Clothes Pro-Uniforms

• You get to wear whatever you want.

• Shows your style and personality

• You can wear comfy shirts and pants.

• No more itchy uniform shirts

• Nobody will judge what you wear be-cause everyone wears the same clothes.

• It cuts down on time deciding what to wear in the morning before school.

Now after reading about school uniforms vs. regular clothes , has it changed your mind about this topic? While regular clothes are here to stay at Grant School, express your opinion after reading this! Paper Mate Clearpoint Mechanical Pencil By Charvi Goswami

Have you been

noticing that lots of people have been us-ing the Paper Mate Clearpoint Mechanical Pencil? Many people have been buying it at Amazon, Walmart, Tar-get, Staples, Office De-pot, or any other place that sells Paper Mate products. In every class I go, there are at least 9 people who have that type of pencil. There are many differ-ent colors in which each color looks very cool. There are 7-8 colors including blue, green, black, purple, rose, aqua, lime green, and pink. Their ratings are always good, with an average of 4.5- 5.0. There is always enough lead in every pencil, and it always come with two whole sticks of lead which should last at least 3-4 months. There are al-ways different colors available in the pack-ages. There are also

starter packs and other packages for everyone who want specific col-ors and amount of pencils. See, this is what I am trying to say here: If you think that these pencils are for you, go right now and go get them!!!

**Editor’s note ~ I have been using them since the beginning of this year and have just finished using the two sticks of lead that came in it. I have just started my second pencil a few days ago. They are the best lead pencils that I have used so far!**

Movie Review: The Incredibles 2

By Camila Chavez

If you are really into movies that have courageous super heroes, sly villains, complicated plots, suspenseful events, yet hilarious mo-ments, The Incredi-bles 2 is the movie for you!

The Incredibles 2 was released on June 15, 2018, and was directed by Brad Bird. This movie takes place in a city in 1962, and the pro-

tagonists are the In-credible family, in-cluding their friend Frozone. The Incred-ibles include Bob Parr (Mr. Incredible), Helen Parr (Elastigirl), and their children, Violet, Dash, and Jack-Jack. Mr. Incredible has super-natural strength powers, and wishes to be able to walk outside as a superhero again. Elastigirl has flexibil-ity powers and is able to stretch her-self like a parachute. The only thing she

wants is to keep her family safe from dan-ger, no matter the obstacles. Violet, the eldest child, has in-visibility and force-field powers. Violet wishes to fit in, but after the end of the first movie, she gains a bit of confidence. Dash is the middle child, and has super speed powers. Dash really wants to play sports, but his mom wouldn’t let him for fear that he would blow his family’s cov-er, so he plays pranks on his teach-er. Jack-Jack has a variety of powers to

PA G E 1 0

reveal, but for now, let’s not go into those details. He is just a baby that’s develop- ing. Frozone, the family’s best friend, has ice powers. The antago-nist is the Screen-slaver. The Screen-slaver turns all screens into a hyp-notizing screen, that hypnotizes however looks at it. Shocking-ly, the person who is behind all the screens is Evelyn Deavor, the person who created all the gadgets for the su-perheroes!

Interviews with Grant School Club Leaders!

By Katrina Rasmussen

Q: What club are you running? A: Ms. McDonough: I advise the Grant School Newspaper Club. Our newspaper is called the Grant Gazette. A: Ms. Eichert: I direct the drama club along with my co-director Mrs. Stasio. Ms. Maddolin is run-ning the production team this year.

Q: What led you to become part of this club?

A: Ms. McDonough: Grant School hasn’t had a newspaper in a few years, so I wanted to bring it back to create awareness of the great events that go on around Grant School and our town. It ’s also an entertaining way for students to write about topics that are current or relevant in their lives such as entertainment, sports, recipes and debatable issues. A: Ms. Eichert: I am a very musical person from playing the trumpet since 4th grade to seeing a new show on or off Broadway at least once a year. Though I have always in involved in the arts and love theater, I never actually got to be part of a production myself. When I came to Grant School 4 years ago and chatted with Mrs. Stasio, she mentioned that she needed help running the Drama Club as they were putting on Disney’s Lion King that year with over 100 students involved. I saw this as my opportunity to finally get a chance to be a part of a theater production and instantly said I would help. Since then, I have loved working with Mrs. Stasio and the students to put on the best produc-tions we can. It is amazing to think about where the production starts and how it magically takes form on the stage for everyone to see.

Q: What are you currently doing?

A: Ms. McDonough: The students are currently writing articles for the December/January Edition of the Grant Gazette. A: Ms. Eichert: We are currently working on this year’s production of Bye Bye Birdie!

Hardest Questions!

By Anjali Raypureddy

1. A man and his family (wife and three children) live in a roundhouse. One day the man went to work and came back to find his phone gone. He suspected one of his three sons, so he questioned them. The first brother said “ I was watching T.V., so I couldn’t do it. The second brother said “ I couldn’t do it because I was drawing a picture. The last brother said “ I couldn’t because I was reading in a corner, so I didn’t do it.” Who hid the phone?

2. An archaeologist found two gold bars in a tomb he just discovered. The locals would not let him take away their treasure. He runs and comes across a bridge. It can only hold the weight of 160 pounds. He weighs 140 pounds and the gold bars are 12 pounds each. What should he do?

3. Molly was trapped in a tower, and fell unconscious. When she woke up, she found three doors in front of her. She had a key in her lap, next to a stick. In the first door, there was a hungry pack of lions, in the second door there was a roaring fire, and behind the last door, there was a dark labyrinth that was full of traps. What should she do?

Answers

1. The third brother because they live in a roundhouse, and a circle does not have corners.

2. He should juggle them while walking across the bridge. 3. She should take the key and stick from her lap, and unlock the door to the fire, and make a torch out of the stick, and find her way across the dark labyrinth.
