Overview
Math is inherently fun, you say? Well good. If you’ve come across this job description youalmost certainly graduated from high school and you probably have one or two shiny degreeshanging somewhere. You have been fortunate to find meaning and excitement in academicpursuits, and you were probably supported along the way. Unfortunately, there are millions ofstudents across the country who are chronically disengaged from their education, and they havenever had the tools, resources, or support to discover the joy in math. That’s where we come in.
Learn Fresh believes that learning should be fun for everyone. We believe that learning shouldbe culturally responsive and inclusive. We believe that learning should be engaging andrewarding, and we believe in harnessing the power of large sports leagues and brands to drawstudents into the learning experience.
We’ve partnered with the NBA to create NBA Math Hoops - a fun math tool for elementary andmiddle school students, centered around a basketball math board game and mobile app.
About The Role
Learn Fresh seeks a Chief Technology Officer to own all aspects of the NBA Math Hoops mobileapp, website, and future product development. With NBA Math Hoops, you’ll have theopportunity to become a pioneer in the ed-tech industry by creating the first educational mobilegame that is directly supported by a major sports league. You will have the autonomy to create agrand vision for the deep and multifaceted ways we can make kids fall in love with math, andthe resources to make that vision a reality. The current version of the app is our first foray intomobile gaming - it is a single player game with competency based progression, and we haveover 25,000 users (read more about it here). We are scouting for a best-in-class senior mobilegame developer to join our team as our founding CTO, and take the app to the next level. Withthe might of the NBA behind us, NBA Math Hoops has the potential to reach millions of studentsaround the world.
Responsibilities
• Act as tech lead for NBA Math Hoops mobile app and own all aspects of the game fromdevelopment to deployment and application submission• Implement new game features and optimizations• Set standards for code quality that will be followed by future team members• Lead technical discussions and guide key decisions• Identify problems and solutions, balancing technical complexity and user experience• Manage a mixed team of full-time team members, consultants, and interns• Lead creative discussions and processes surrounding further development of Learn Fresh’stech products and platforms
Required:
• Ability to effectively break down large scale projects into multi-week goals and then actionabletasks and objectives• Ability to identify and solve key problems creatively with minimal guidance• Outstanding skill in Java, Objective-C, and/or Unity• Ability to design and implement our backend services at scale, eventually building systems tosupply dynamic content to the native app• Understand iOS and Android app performance analysis and optimization techniques• Experience leading cross-functional technical teams, including both engineering, QA & UXresources• Have a well-developed social justice lens as it relates to education• BS in Computer Science or equivalent
Preferred:
• 2+ years of professional mobile gaming experience (through and beyond ship) building nativeiOS and/or Android games• Experience articulating and reviewing mobile application architectures• Experience developing and maintaining applications on AWS, Google Cloud Platform, or anequivalent• Understanding of mobile graphics pipeline and rendering constraints• Have an opinion formed about who the greatest basketball player of all time is• Have a deep understanding of math education and its current state nationally
