Update on the Journey of Mr. Thomas Carlson to the Diaconate
By now, all of you might have seen Thomas Carlson dressed in an alb serving at mass. You might have asked yourself, why is he doing that? Here is the answer: last November, seventeen candidates to the diaconate in Chicago were ins tuted into the ministry of acolyte. This is one important step in their journey and, now that Tom is one of them, he must fulfill the next step in his ministry: prac ce! What is an acolyte? In general, the acolyte is ins tuted for service at the altar and to assist the Priest and Deacon. It is his place principally to prepare the altar and the sacred vessels and, if necessary, to distribute the Eucharist to the faithful as an extraordinary minister. Again, this is the ministry of the acolyte in a nutshell. If you would like to know more, make sure to ask Tom. He will be pleased to answer any ques on you might have. I am pleased to inform you that Tom is not only passing his subjects at the ins tute with flying colors, but also doing a great job as an acolyte. I am very proud of his accomplishments so far and I am looking forward to have him serve as a Deacon here at St. Barbara a er his ordina on. Please, keep him and all the candidates to the diaconate in your prayers, and don’t forget to congratulate Tom for his latest accomplishment.
God bless. Fr. Edgar

¡No!
A few years ago a special clock hit the marketplace around Christmas me. The clock didn’t keep me in the tradi onal way. Rather, what you were supposed to do was to enter your age, your gender, and the area of the world where you lived. The “clock” then programmed your life expectancy and began a systema c countdown to zero—to the end of your life. And, I ask myself who, in his or her right mind, would buy something like that? Who would give it as a gi on Christmas?
The reality is that, our lives are not certain and can’t be calculated that way. Though we can and should plan for tomorrow, none of us is absolutely sure of what tomorrow will bring. We never really know what to expect.
Mary was keenly aware of that. She was a very young person when she gave birth to Jesus. Imagine what her life must have been in the preceding months: first an engagement, then a surprise pregnancy with the news that her child would be God’s Son, then fleeing on a donkey to protect her unborn son, and finally giving birth in a strange place miles away from her home—a very unexpected chain of events indeed!
Did Mary have any need for all this? No! Then why was she so willing to go through it? She went through all of this, first, because she was faithful to God and trusted Him, and, second, because once the life of the Child Jesus was in her, she couldn’t help but to love Him. That is what mothers do—they are ready to give their life for their children.
That same Mother—the Mother of God—has become also our Mother through her Son Jesus. And as such, she is ready to go close to whatever lengths to guide us to her Son—to the One who saves. That is why we begin each New Year with this celebra on. We are reminded that as God’s Mother, she has been given the grace to help us walk with Jesus in the path of salva on.
There is no countdown to the end of our life, but, if there is one, we have nothing to fear if we walk with Mary; she is our Mother and the Mother of the author of Life.
