TEGO Specialty Binders The Amazing All-Rounders

Hot, hotter, TEGO. Heat resistance up to 650 C is the indisputable reason why coatingsmanufacturers are increasingly using our specialty binders. They also withstand low temperatures,

are extremely weather-resistant and exhibit exceptional chemical resistance, high elasticity, very

good release and, of course, they conserve resources. They make finishes glossier and more

attractive and ensure protection against corrosion. In short, TEGO Specialty Binders determine the

fundamental properties of a coating and help ensure commercial success. We look forward to

The April issue has two features focused on delivering more environ-

mentally-friendly and sustainable solutions to the coatings industry.

Low- and Zero-VOC Coatings Technologies (page 32) takes

a look at the latest offerings from major paint manufacturers. It is vitally

important to deliver coating solutions to the market that deliver a lower

environmental impact, said Nick Bartoszek, Sherwin-Williams global

marketing director - Liquid & Powder Products. Coatings that deliver

low or zero-VOC are common requests our customers are asking for every

day. When we do this, we are looking for ways to improve the product orprocess as well. We consistently ask ourselves how we take steps out of

the process and limit total VOC emissions. Some examples: new resin de-

velopments have lowered VOCs and HAPs in polyurethane coatings; thats

something that allows nishers to meet environmental standards while re-

alizing the potential energy and inventory savings that these nishes offer.

The environmental benets of radiation curable technologies are well

known. Rather than using traditional methods, which typically use more

energy and create harmful emissions, UV/EB curing is typically quicker

and uses less energy. This years feature on Radiation Curable Coatings

(page 35) contains a Q&A session with Dr. Mike J. Idacavage, an adjunct

associate professor at SUNY-ESF in Syracuse, NY where he teaches courses

in UV and EB curing technology. He answers some questions on the basictechnology and applications for radiation curable coatings and technology.

According to Idacavage, there are quite a few benets to using radia-

tion curing technologies. The most cited benet on converting over from

thermal to light or EB cured formulations is productivity, he said. The

typical light cured coating can go from a liquid to a fully cured solid in

a few seconds or less as compared to an oven cure, which might take

minutes or hours. Another benet of radiation curable coatings is that

in many cases, there is considerable less energy required to cure the coat-

ing. With no need for lengthy thermal ovens and their required heating

sources, the use of a small UV lamp as the energy source for curing results

    in clear energy savings.

PPG Acquires Specialty Wood Care andPaint Products Manufacturer Flood Australia

PPG Industries has completed the acqui-

sition of certain assets of Flood Australia,

    which manufactures and distributes spe-

cialty wood stain and paint additive so-

    lutions for consumer, commercial and

    industrial applications. Financial terms

    were not disclosed.

    The acquisition of Flood Australia

allows PPG to further expand its ar-

    chitectural paint and coatings offering

and establish a position in wood care

in Australia, said Michael McGarry,PPG president and chief operating offi-

cer. We look forward to providing cus-

tomers with the same quality products

for which the Flood brand has become

    known in Australia.

Flood products in Australia are dis-

    tributed at home improvement stores,

    including Bunnings, Masters, Mitre 10,

    Danks, and independent paint dealers.

    No manufacturing assets or facilities

    were included in the acquisition.

PPG currently manufactures and dis-tributes Flood wood care products in

    North America.

    Hempels Acquisitionof Jones-Blair Company

ApprovedHempel has closed its previously an-

    nounced acquisition of Jones-Blair

Company, a leading North American sup-

plier for the protective and waterproof-

ing markets. In line with Hempels global

growth strategy, the acquisition will pro-vide Hempel with a solid and diverse

    platform for the continued development

of its business in North America.

One of Hempels key objectives is

to strengthen its presence in North

    America through organic growth and

    acquisitions. The acquisition of Jones-

Blair Company, located in Dallas, Texas,

    supports this objective by accelerating

Hempels growth in the region within its

    strategic segments.

This acquisition is Hempels third inthe last four months. In December 2014,

    Hempel acquired Schaepman, a Dutch

    supplier of specialised industrial, protec-

tive and decorative coatings. In February

2015, it acquired its former toll manu-

facturer in South Africa, The Coatings

    Manufacturing Company.

    Jones-Blairs business is focused on

two distinct markets: oil & gas (in-

    dustrial coatings) and construction,

    especially waterproofing, through the

    NEOGARD brand.

According to Kim Junge Andersen,Hempels group executive vice pesident &

CFO, the two companies product portfo-

lios complement each other perfectly. By

combining our strengths, we can serve

our customers better and with more com-

plete solutions compared to what each of

us could do on our own, he said.

    Jones-Blairs manufacturing facility

in Dallas, Texas, will remain operational

    and will complement production at

    Hempels factory in Conroe, Texas.

The new plant in Dallas becomes

Hempels 27th factory and is one of four

new factories that Hempel has added to

    its worldwide production footprint since

2014, as part of its One Hempel One

    Ambition growth strategy.

    We created strong growth momentum

in 2014 and we will continue building on

it, Kim Junge Andersen said, adding:

2015 it is an exciting year forHempel. We are celebrating 100 years of

being a successful and responsible busi-

ness, and 2015 also marks the continu-

ation of our growth strategy. Our focus

is still on growing our core segments

    Decorative, Protective and Marine and

we have launched several initiatives and

products that will help us achieve our

    growth goals. CW

Axalta Coating Systems, a global supplier

of liquid and powder coatings, has opened

a manufacturing facility in Shanghai to

    produce waterborne coatings for Chinas

    growing automobile market. The newest

and one of Axaltas most advanced wa-

    terborne production facilities, the plant

reflects the key role that China plays in

Axaltas global strategy, which is focused

    on providing sustainable coating products

    and application systems for customers

while reducing the environmental impactof the production process. The new facility

is located adjacent to Axaltas operations

center that opened in the Jiading district

    of Shanghai in 2008.

    The new facility features advanced

    manufacturing technologies and design

concepts such as integrated production sys-

tems designed to reduce the environmental

footprint of coating production. The highly

automated facility can also maximize the

use of raw materials and accelerate manu-

facturing cycle time. Advanced air filtrationsystems are designed to optimize air qual-

ity within the facility and to reduce emis-

sions. The new facility will double Axaltas

capacity in China for the production of

    waterborne coatings, further enhancing the

companys market leadership in serving au-

tomotive customers in China, the worlds

    biggest automotive market.

Axalta is proud to be a key wa-

    terborne coatings provider to Chinas

    growing vehicle market, said Axalta

chairman and CEO Charles Shaver at

    the opening ceremony. Our expanded

    facility will provide sustainable coat-

ing options for our customers. The new

manufacturing center reflects the skill and

dedication of our employees who were

able to complete the entire construction

    project in only 10 months.

    The waterborne coating products pro-

duced at the Jiading location are designed

to meet global environmental require-ments, such as the EUs VOC Regulation

    2004/42/EC, which can help reduce

    the overall environmental footprint of

    Chinas auto industry.

    Commenting on the new water-

borne plant, Sun Lianying, chairman of

    the China National Coating Industry

Association, said, This is a solid dem-

    onstration of Axaltas long-term com-

mitment to the China market and its

    eco-responsible production process

which will have a positive impact on thesustainable development of Chinas coat-

ing industries. The development is fully

    aligned with the Chinese governments

goal of developing a sustainable auto in-

dustry, using green solutions to meet ris-

ing market demand across the country.

One of the highlights of the plant

    opening included a sustainability exhibi-

    tion showcasing how Axalta manufactur-

    ing systems, products, applications, and

    research and development practices each

contribute to a sustainable business mod-

el. The exhibition also illustrated how the

Jiading waterborne plant can help reduce

    customers environmental footprint by

    reducing volatile organic compounds and

    energy consumption from their operations.

    To be effective, sustainability must

    be about productivity and profitability

as much as it is about the effects on the

    environment and society, said Shaver.

In this way, increasingly sustainableproducts and applications help to drive

business growth as well as make Axalta a

    better partner for our customers.

The new plant represents a significant

expansion of Axaltas presence in China.

It joins two other dedicated liquid coating

    manufacturing operations in the country,

an Asia Pacific R&D laboratory and color

    development center, four training facili-

ties for refinish customers and six powder

    coating manufacturing locations. Axaltas

multiple resources in China work togetherto support the sustained, long-term growth

of Chinas automotive and other industries

    that use Axalta coatings.

Valspar Celebrates50 Years of FluroponPVDF Resin-basedCoatings

    The Valspar Corporation celebrates

50 years of Fluropon 70 percent PVDF

    resin-based coatings. Since the flagship

    architectural coating launched in 1965,

    Valspars Fluropon exterior coatings have

become the industry standard for both

metal coil coating and aluminum extru-

    sion applications.

    To commemorate its golden anni-

    versary, Fluropon50.com will provide

    information on Fluropon products and

Results of U.S. Architectural Coatings Industry Research Report Which Compared Business Trendsin 1Q15 vs. 1Q14

Each month, North Coast Research surveys

a large sample of paint retailers throughout

the U.S. to get a sense for current business

trends. Please note that of the three primary

    architectural coatings channels (paint stores,

home centers, and retail distributors), this

survey is primarily reflective of the distributor

channel which tends to see volume growthless than the industry; therefore, we view the

results as a directional indicator more so than

    absolute industry volumes. For inquiries

regarding this report please contact Kevin

    Hocevar at 216-468-6924 orkevin.hocevar@

    northcoastresearch.com.

    Architectural Coatings Sales Vol-

    umes Up 1.1% in 1Q15 vs. 1Q14

    According to industry participants, av-

erage sales volumes increased 1.1% in

1Q15 compared to 1Q14. This comparesto volume growth of 1.6% in 4Q14, 1.2%

in 3Q14, and record volume growth of

2.6% in 2Q14. Although still positive, we

note that volumes grew at the slowest

rate in 1Q15 since the inception of our

    survey, indicating slight slowdowns dur-

ing the period primarily due to weather.

We continue to expect the full-year 2015

to play out similar to our initial expecta-

tions, although we now expect some

1Q15 demand to be deferred into later

periods. Overall, 51% of respondentswitnessed an increase in paint volumes

vs. only 20% that saw volumes decline,

averaging out to 1.1% year-over-year vol-

ume growth with a net increase of 31%.

Price of Paint from Suppliers 1Q15

    Paint Prices Trend Slightly Higher

51% of contacts noted an uptick in the

price of paint in 1Q15 vs. 1Q14 as our

paint price index rose 1.1% compared to

average increases of 0.5%-1.0% in 2014.

Our research suggests that a little bit of

price is sticking in the U.S. architecturalpaint industry but only in the independent

dealer channel and likely in the low-single

digit range. We do not believe the paint

store or home center channels are seeing

price increases at this time. Recall that we

picked up potential price increases in the

results from our 4Q14 survey where we

observed a meaningful uptick in contacts

that have been notified of a price increase

from paint manufacturers to take place in

2015. The majority of contacts believed

these attempts would be successful andwe believe that data we have discovered

in 1Q15 suggests that some degree of

pricing did in fact stick in the marketplace.

    Overall, 51% of respondents witnessed

an uptick in pricing vs. only 6% that saw

pricing decline, averaging out to a 1.1%

increase in year-over-year pricing with a

    net increase of 45%.

    Raw Materials Continued Raw Ma-

    terial Declines Suggest Increasingly En-

couraging Price/RawsBased on our research, we believe oil-

based raw materials and titanium dioxide

    (TiO2) have seen meaningful declines

thus far through 1Q15. To simplify, we be-

lieve the raw material basket for coatings

can be broken down into 30% oil derived

    raws, 20% TiO2, and 50% other. Certain

oil-based raws, such as solvents are down

at least 25%-30% whereas other polymer-

based raws are down at least 5%-10%.

TiO2 started to see declines in 4Q14 af-

ter several quarters of remaining flat andour research suggests pricing has slipped

further in 2015 to the tune of another 8%-

10%. Assuming the other category will

see flat to slightly higher pricing, we be-

lieve raw materials will decline mid-single

digits in 2015 which is more pronounced

when compared to our initial though

    which forecasted low-single digit declines.

    3-Month Outlook Outlook at Strong

Levels as Contacts Expect Pent-Up De-

mand and Busy Paint SeasonOur proprietary Coatings 3-Month Out-

look Index reached 0.80 in 4Q14 which

compares to a reading of 0.36 vs. 4Q1and

a reading of 0.92 vs. 1Q14. Please note

that the highest possible reading is +2

(indicating all contacts have a very posi-

tive outlook) and the lowest possible

reading is -2 (indicating all contacts have

a very negative outlook). We were not

surprised to see a strong outlook level in

our 1Q15 survey and view the 0.80 read-

ing as in-line with our initial expectations;however, we believe outlooks are strong

as the majority of contacts anticipate an

acceleration in demand and are excited

for what appears to be a busy 2015.

ager for metal buildings. Its been excit-

ing to be involved with a product whose

first response was What is this stuff? to

one that became the basis of fluoropoly-

mer specifications as used by architects

all over the world today, said Kelly.

    In 1965, Pennwalts corporate head-

Durapaint Industries JoinsPPG Certified ApplicatorProgram GroupPPG Industries building products-

    exterior coatings group announced

    that Durapaint Industries Limited,

    Scarborough, Ontario, Canada, has been

accredited as a member of the PPG CAP

    Certified Applicator Program (PPG/

CAP) group.Durapaint Industries is now part of

a select network of commercial coating

applicators certified by PPG to apply

    high-performance DURANAR fluo-

    ropolymer coatings to aluminum archi-

    tectural components.

We are proud to become a PPG CAP

    Certified Applicator Program member,

    said Elio Zarlenga, president, Durapaint

    Industries. This certification emphasizes

our commitment to our customers and in-

creases our ability to deliver high-qualityproducts, service and expertise.

Brian Knapp, PPG director, coil and

building products, said PPG is equally

    pleased to welcome Durapaint Industries

to the PPG/CAP group. One reason we

    enjoy working with Durapaint Industries

is their dedication to continually reinvest-

ing in their products, people and pro-

cesses. We look forward to working with

them as certified applicators to ensure

that they remain on the cutting-edge of

    coatings products and technologies.

To qualify for PPG/CAP group mem-

    bership, applicators undergo a rigorous

audit encompassing all aspects of the

coating process, from cleaning and pre-treating metal substrates to application

of the coating. The audit specifies paint

    application parameters and cure sched-

ules, as well as how finished products are

    handled, packed and shipped.

    Knapp said PPG/CAP group member-

    ship enhances coatings applicators abil-

ity to meet building industry demands for

    value-added products and solutions. The

    program offers architects, general con-

    tractors, glazing contractors and other

customers high levels of quality, reliabil-ity and performance, he added.

    Working with a PPG-certified applica-

tor helps ensure enhanced color harmony

    among coated aluminum architectural

components on a building. PPG/CAP pro-

    gram guidelines establish protocols to

    minimize color variance across coated

    aluminum building components, such as:

a digital global database of colors

    that are stored numerically;

    a uniform, systems-oriented ap-

proach to matching colors and mak-ing paint; and

    PPGs color and coatings knowledge,

    experience and resources, especially

    regarding metallic color production.

    Hempels Hempadur AvantGuard Wins

Frost & Sullivan Award for New ProductInnovationHempels Hempadur AvantGuard range of products has won

the 2014 European Frost & Sullivan Award for New Product

Innovation. To be presented on May 14 in London, the award

recognizes the products ability to provide superior anti-corrosive

protection for iron and steel structures in tough environments.

Hempels Hempadur AvantGuard activated zinc primers in-

clude patented AvantGuard technology to provide better anti-

corrosion protection than zinc epoxies without AvantGuard.

The coatings are developed to protect industrial structures and

equipment in C4 and C5 corrosive conditions, where saltwater

and high humidity corrode unprotected steel. They can be usedin a range industries and applications, from offshore oil and gas

platforms to power plants and wind turbines.

The award recognizes the products ability to offer reduced

corrosion, improved performance in extreme temperatures and

    superior mechanical strength.

As Frost & Sullivan senior research analyst Soundarya

AvantGuard and we believe the tech-

nology is the biggest step forward

    in anti-corrosive coatings since zinc

    coatings were first introduced dur-

ing the 1960s. As well as deliveringstronger anti-corrosive performance,

    AvantGuard coatings can be applied

    with standard application techniques.

They show high tolerance to excessive

dry film thicknesses and different appli-

    cation conditions, which helps custom-

    ers improve application productivity.

    AkzoNobel has introduced Enviroline

    405HTR, a single-coat glass fi-

ber reinforced lining system into its

    International coatings range. Enviroline

405HTR is designed to reduce product

    range complexity while meeting the

    ever-changing environmental, perfor-

mance, and application demands of the

    North America protective coatings mar-

    ket, the company said.

    The high solids, ultra-low volatile

organic compound (VOC) Enviroline405HTR lining system is formulated to

provide a more sustainable and health,

    safety and environmentally conscious op-

    tion, without compromising high-level

    protection. Enviroline 405HTR protects

within a broad range of environments

    and temperatures from continuous

immersion in a wide range of chemicals

including crude oil and hydrocarbon wa-

ter mixtures of up to 250F (120C) to

applications with temperatures as low as

    50F (10C).Enviroline 405HTR is a lining sys-

tem that has come of age, said Karl

    Nollsch, AkzoNobels North American

    Linings Market Champion. With just

one product, facility owners can not

    only achieve environmental compliance

    and measurable cost-savings, but unpar-

    alleled protection for diverse applica-

    tions including petroleum storage tanks,

pipe exteriors, biofuel storage tanks, and

vessels used for natural gas extraction.

Theres no other lining system that canoffer this kind of flexibility.

The glass fiber and flake reinforced

    material has greater wetting properties

and improved leveling, and an increased

pot life for hot potting. With super-fast

    cure times, Enviroline 405HTR consis-

tently allows storage vessels to be put

back into service in as little as 14 hours

after coating. The single coat, high build

application (20-60 mils) also helps owners

save on labor costs, which together helps

minimize disruption to production, whilereducing the overall cost of installation.

TCI Powder CoatingsLaunches TruAnodizePowder CoatingTCI Powder Coatings, a powder coating

manufacturer and a subsidiary of RPM

    International company, has launched a

    newly developed powder coating prod-

uct offering, the TruAnodize line, meet-

ing AAMA 2604 specifications. As part

    of the TruDurance architectural coatings

product line, these powder coatings are

designed specifically for architectural ap-plications where the anodized look is

desired. The TruAnodize coatings are a

smooth, low gloss powder coating applied

oped to match the most popular anodized

colors are Light Bronze LR, Dark Bronze

LR, Dark Bronze DR, Champagne LR,

Black, and Bonded Clear. Ideal applica-

tions for these coatings include windows,

    doorframes, lighting, benches, wall pan-

els, and rails. These coatings will elimi-nate the variation problems commonly

    associated with anodized metals while

    still meeting AAMA 2604 specifications

    in a one-coat powder coating.

    launched its Crescent Collection. The

Crescent Collection now features 16 very

dark shades, including two new products

    - Marsala Black and Textured MarsalaBlack. Marsala Black is a deep black hue

with a hint of rich red, and the Textured

to high gloss and textures. The Crescent

Collection is available in flexible quantitiesas low as five pounds.

Prime Resins UnveilsInorganic Mineral CoatingPrime Resins Inc. has introduced a new

class of inorganic water- and mineral-

    based coatings that provide corrosion

and fire resistance protection on mul-

    tiple surfaces.

    Prime Coat 6000 Lining, Prime

Coat 6100 Fire and Prime Coat 6200

    Corrosion are spray-applied sustainable

    inorganic coatings with broad applica-

tions. Each offers zero VOCs. All threeare designed to have a rapid set time and

    cure tack-free within five minutes.

Prime Coat 6000 Lining is proven to

meet NSF/ANSI 61 standards for contact

with potable water and is highly abra-

sion- and chemical-resistant, making it an

option for municipal water and sewer ap-

plications, water tank linings and the like.

Prime Coat 6100 Fire provides supe-

rior fire resistance protection when ap-

plied to a variety of surfaces. ASTM E84

testing proved zero flame spread, zero gasgeneration and zero smoke generation.

    Prime Coat 6200 Corrosion provides

    durable protection against corrosion and

oxidation of concrete and steel surfaces.

Only a thin layer, less than 20 mils, pro-

    vides corrosion protection. The product

develops a strong bond with properly

    prepared surfaces, producing an alloyed

layer that remains bonded to the surface

even if the visible layer is penetrated.

This product is ideal for marine ap-

plications such as seawalls, bridges, rebar, railcars, pipelines, tanks and other surfac-

es exposed to moisture and/or abrasive

substances. The life of concrete that is

starting to erode and shed aggregate can

be extended with a thin application.

A new pump has been developed for

these products. The Prime PC features

twin progressive cavity pumps to meter

and disperse the material with almost

no shearing. Fewer passes are needed

to build thickness since the material

does not require over-diluting to pre-vent shearing. CW

    MarketReports

    The Asia-Pacific economies are growing

fast, boosting growth in the demand for

    many building and industrial materials,

including paints and coatings. The total

market for paints and coatings was 21.4

million tonnes in 2013, and is forecast

by IRL to increase to 29.2 million tonnes

by 2018; this is equivalent to an aver-

age annual growth rate of 6.4% in the

    medium term.

China is by far the largest national

market for paints and coatings in theAsia-Pacific region, followed at some

    considerable distance by India and

Japan. The smallest markets are those

of New Zealand and Singapore. While

medium-term growth is forecast to be

low in the more developed and ma-

ture markets such as Australia, New

    Zealand and Japan, the developing

market of India is predicted to demon-

strate growth of over 10% per annum

over the next five years. India still of-

fers significant potential for paints andcoatings market growth, as per capita

    consumption remains very low.

The Chinese market is still offering

    good medium-term growth of around

6.5% per annum for paints and coatings

suppliers, driven by growth in down-

    stream industries such as automotive,

    construction, shipbuilding, petrochemi-

cals and civil engineering. However, this

forecast growth is lower than in previ-

ous years as the country is experiencing

slower economic growth, caused by risingcosts of labour, land and raw materials,

    and increasing taxes.

The third tier of growth markets com-

    prises the South-East Asian economies

    of Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, the

    Philippines and Malaysia. These coun-

tries are experiencing rising incomes, im-

proving standards of living and increasing

domestic demand, while labour and pro-

    duction costs remain relatively low.

    Overall in Asia-Pacific, architectural

coatings account for just less than 50%of the total paints and coatings market,

    although this figure varies considerably

from country to country. Indias high

share of the architectural segment, at

over 80%, reflects the very underdevel-

oped nature of much of the countrys in-

    dustrial infrastructure.

Protective coatings and general in-dustrial coatings (including can and coil

coatings) are the second and third larg-

    est end-use segments, respectively. New

Zealand and Singapore are the only two

countries with no consumption of auto-

motive OEM coatings, since they do not

    possess any automotive production facili-

ties. Australias consumption of automo-tive OEM coatings is expected to fall to

zero by 2018 as the country loses its ve-

    hicle manufacturing capabilities.

    The relative importance of the

    protective coatings segment is under-

pinned by the considerable activities in

terms of oil and gas production, energygeneration and mining that take place

in many of the Asia-Pacific countries.

    Protective coatings have a particularly

large share of the market in China due

to the fast growth of sectors such as

    civil engineering, marine engineering

    and container manufacturing.

Marine coatings have a very high

share of the national paints and coat-

ings market in Singapore, reflecting that

countrys importance as a regional hub

for maritime transportation, and also inSouth Korea, which remains a key ship-

building nation despite losing some busi-

ness in recent years to China and other

    low-cost countries such as Indonesia.

Industrial wood coatings are an es-

    pecially dominant end-use segment in

Vietnam, thanks to the importance of

the wood processing industry and the

    strong demand for Vietnamese-made

    furniture from export markets around

    the world.

Although the market for plastic coat-ings is relatively small in all countries

covered in this report, it is of greater

relative importance in Japan and Taiwan,

since those countries are key manufactur-

ers of electrical and electronic goods.

A Profile of the Asia-Pacific Paint

Industry gives an insight into the

market changes in the past few years,

as well as outlining the key trends af-

    fecting the decorative and industrial

    coatings segments for each individual

country covered. The scope of thestudy covers Australia, China, India,

    Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, New

    Zealand, Philippines, Singapore, South

    Korea, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam.

It provides 2013 market data on nine

    mainstream paints and coatings seg-

    ments: architectural/decorative, indus-

    trial wood coatings, protective coatings,

    marine coatings, automotive OEM

    coatings, automotive refinishes, pow-

    der coatings, general industrial coatings

and plastic coatings. Forecasts on theseare also presented for the year 2018.

Hot Melt Adhesive Marketin China to Reach RMB 15Billion in 2019GCiS China Strategic Research estimates

that the domestic market of hot melt ad-

hesives in China is valued at over RMB

10.1 Bn, or USD 1.6 Bn, as of the end

of 2014. The study finds that the mar-

ket will continue to grow at above GDP

growth rate in the next few years, driven

by Chinas continued rapid developmentin key end-user industries.

Recently there has been a strong regu-

latory push to incentivize use of envi-

    ronmentally-friendly products, which in

    combination with an increased environ-

    mental consciousness among the public

has put pressure on adhesive using manu-

facturers to opt for HMA, which has no

    VOC emissions, over alternate solvent-

based adhesives. While HMA has key ap-

    plications to textile, packaging, furniture,

and hygiene products industries, GCiSforecasts electronics will continue to have

the highest growth, where hot melts are

used for the manufacturing and assem-

bly, of electronic components, chips and

boards, cell phones, and computers. In to-

tal, these end-user industries are reported

to have consumed over 400,000 metric

ince PPG purchased Comex last fall, the

Mexican company has taken on a large

role in the Latin American operations ofthe parent. Michael McGarry, the president

and chief operating officer of PPG responds to

Coatings World questions about how integra-

tion of the company will play out:

Coatings World: How will the blend of PPG/

Comex products available in Mexico change

over the next year or two?

Michael McGarry: First and foremost, were

focused on continuing to deliver to customers

what theyve come to expect from the Comex

business. Comex also has a stores network inCentral America. We look forward to growing

that segment of the overall stores network,

bringing the successful products from Mexico

into Central America and augmenting that with

our Glidden brand, which is the top brand in

Panama. The Glidden brand will be handled by

    PPG-Comex in Central America.

Over time, we hope to continue growth in

Mexico and Latin America, across all our coat-ings segments. We currently supply automotive

coatings in the market and maintain a manufac-

turing facility in San Juan del Rio, Quertaro.

As we continue the integration of Comex, we

will look for opportunities to introduce prod-

ucts from other coatings segments, such as

protective and marine coatings, to ensure our

customers in Mexico have access to the best

    possible product array.

CW: What plans do you have for changing

the store network in Mexico or the CentAm/Carib region?

    Since PPGs

    purchase of

    Comex, the

    Mexican company

    has taken on a

    large role in the

    Latin American

    operations of the

    parent company.

McGarry: Comexs business is very well

run, and has a number of practices that

we regard as best-in-class that we plan

to replicate in other areas of the world

    where we have architectural coatings

businesses. Comex also has strong mar-keting practices and ideas that we hope

to utilize in our existing architectural

coatings businesses in the U.S., Canada,

    Europe, Australia and Brazil.

In addition, Comex products are sold

    through a network of approximately

3,800 stores that are independently owned

and operated by more than 700 conces-

sionaires. We believe that the network of

stores can continue to grow further and

potentially reach upwards of 6,000 loca-

tions. We continue to be excited about theprospects of growing the Comex business.

CW: What else is notable about the

    Mexico/LatAm market involving Comex?

McGarry: Mexico is an expanding econ-

omy and we look forward to growing in

the region with Comex customers and em-

ployees. If you look at the coatings market

in Mexico, about half of the sales are ar-

    chitectural and half are non-architectural.

The countrys per capita consumption of

paint is about half that in the U.S. Rightnow, the architectural side of the coatings

market has a lot of room for growth.

In addition, Mexico has an expand-

ing oil and gas market and as this mar-

ket opens up, we expect this to be a very

robust segment for PPG. We have a num-

ber of products in our protective and ma-

rine coatings business that will be poised

for growth in the petrochemicals segment. We also expect the growing auto-

motive market in Mexico to represent

a number of opportunities for PPG. As

    automotive companies continue to build

    manufacturing facilities in Mexico, this

    represents opportunities for our architec-

tural and industrial coatings products to

be incorporated into these facilities. And

in addition to increased demand for our

automotive coatings for new vehicles, the

increased amount of automobiles on the

road will lead to increased demand forPPGs refinish products that are used in

    auto body repair shops.
