Contact at 604 591-5751 or [email protected] B uilding on the success of the Canada India Networking Iniave (CINI) in 2010, CINI 2014 will be held on June 19-23 at the Sheraton Guildford located in Surrey, B.C. The theme of the conference is health and civil society. Leading clinicians, educators, sci- ensts and industry leaders will parcipate in the conference to be held on June 20 and 21. Dr. Arun Garg, President and Chair of the Canada India Network Society (CINS), states, “The mission of CINI 2014 is to work on build- ing a healthier society both here in Canada and in South Asian countries. CINI provides a forum to enable the building of strong links and a foundaon for health in a civil society.” The conference is designed not only to bring improvements to South Asian health but to seek opportunies for health technology in- novaon in B.C. CINI 2014 is hosted by the Fraser Health Authority and Simon Fraser University, with acve organizaonal support from the Brish Columbia Instute of Tech- nology (BCIT), Kwantlen Polytechnic Univer- sity (KPU), the University of Brish Columbia (UBC), and industry partners Roche Canada and Medtronics of Canada Ltd. “Fraser Health welcomes opportunies to see the applica- on of innovave technology to meet the specific needs of our South Asian populaon,” says Dr. Nigel Murray, President and CEO, Fra- ser Health. The conference is comprised of four ses- sions. The first session will discuss the train- ing of nursing and allied health personnel, and collaboraon opportunies which exist be- tween B.C. and India. BCIT and CINS are work- ing with the Public Health Foundaon of India. Both have been asked by the Government of India to develop a long-term naonal plan for allied health personnel training. This work- shop will further explore the opportunies and requirements for such a training program, including competence requirements for the personnel trained. Professor Susan Dahinten of UBC and Dean Tru Freeman of KPU will share their experiences in training nursing personnel and its applicaon in India. Kathy Kinloch, the President of BCIT, will chair and introduce the session. Bill Dow, the Dean of Health Sciences at BCIT and Kavita Narayan, the Lead of the Allied Health Project at the Public Health Foundaon of India will be co- chairs. The second session will discuss health, technology and economy. Technology plays a very significant role in health-care delivery. According to Dr. Garg, in the next few years we are going to see a major revoluon in the delivery of health care using technology, be- ing developed both in Canada and in India. The session will bring together leading ex- perts in social media, personal health care devices, medical imaging, the integraon of informaon technology (IT) and informaon management (IM), and the use of personal computers, smart phone and iPads for self- management. Work is being done in this area in the eHealth Program of the interCultural Online Health Network (iCON) at UBC under the leadership of Dr. Kendall Ho and Dr. Gul- zar Cheema. CINI 2014 will collaborate with iCON to assess the potenal use locally and in India. This session will enable the Innova- on Boulevard project of the City of Surrey to once again bring together as many people of common interests as possible to explore the opportunies in development of industry and innovaon in health care. Dr. Ryan Darcy will share his work on brain imaging and the clin- ical role of this unique technology. The second session will also discuss pro- cess control technology in chronic disease management through the use of IT and IM. Innovave work is being done by Lane Des- borough of Medtronic on the potenal appli- caon of process control technology to South Asian health and to the South Asian popula- on. Dr. Soumyo Mukherji of IIT in Mumbai and Dr. Sharmila Mande of Tata Life Sciences Group Pune in India will share their research and work in emerging technology and health. Drs. Mukherji and Mande are currently work- ing with SFU as part of the SFU-India engage- ment. The concept of reverse innovaon will be explored. In India, technology is providing more cost-effecve ways to deliver health care, for example in cataract surgery at the Aravind Hospital. The potenal applicaon to Canadian health care delivery will be discussed. Saturday June 21, the second day of the conference, will focus on clinical sessions. The first session of the day will discuss primary care, chronic disease management, innovaons and transformaon for sustain- able health care. This session is an oppor- tunity to showcase the progress of the work underway in B.C. in primary care innovaon and in beer health care delivery for chronic diseases, such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Dr. Garg notes that the South Asian populaon has a greater prevalence of these diseases and these innovaons have a direct impact on beer care and lowering of the bu- rden of chronic diseases among South Asians. Dr. Bill Cavers, President-Elect of the Brish Columbia Medical Associaon (BCMA) and President of the Society of General Prac- oners of BC will co-chair the session with Dr. Prabhakaran of the Centre for Chronic Disease Control from India. Parcipang in the session will be several leading physicians, the BC Min- istry of Primary Care Group, and other innov- ators in self-management, public awareness and guidelines for standard of care. The recently established South Asian Health Centre through the division of family pracce in Surrey and North Delta will be fea- tured. Acquiring ongoing support for this Cen- tre and for other Fraser Health iniaves, for example in Abbotsford and Burnaby, will be the goal of this session. The role of the ancient knowledge of yoga and other holisc approaches to health are emerging in the mainstream. The last session of the conference will highlight some of the research on these approaches and some ap- plicaons of yoga in metabolic cardiac health and in mental health in the South Asian popu- laon. Dr. Elizabeth Innes of West Virginia Uni- versity and Dr. Shivarama Varambally of the Naonal Instute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences from India will discuss their very in- teresng research findings on yoga and health. The session will be led by Dr. Lakshmi Yatham of the Faculty of Medicine at UBC. A very unique blend of modern medicine and ancient Indian knowledge of yoga will be highlighted, includ- ing the role it can play in mental health, addic- on and general metabolic disorders. A very special research workshop on Mon- day, June 23 will be presented by Dr. Nadia Khan, a Michael Smith Foundaon for Health Research scholar at UBC. The goal is to estab- lish a global network for South Asian research. The dignitaries confirmed for the confer- ence include Hon. Amrik Virk, Minister of Ad- vanced Educaon and MLA Surrey-Tynehead; Hon. Andrew Wilkinson, Minister of Technol- ogy, Innovaon and Cizens’ Services and MLA Vancouver-Quilchena; and Hon. Senator Asha Seth. Dr. Seth has taken a key interest in the work of CINS and recently led a trade delegaon to the State of Uar Pradesh (U.P.) in India to discuss increased trade between Canada and India. Through her iniave and the follow-up work of CINS, a recent memo- randum to build es was completed between UBC in Canada and King George Medical Uni- versity in U.P., India. The South Asian Health Centre (SAHC) is hosng an Open House for the delegates of the CINI 2014 conference and for community members to showcase the programs and ser- vices offered at the Centre. Envisioned to be a health home for the South Asian community in Sur- rey, the Centre aims to provide culturally tai- lored care through a family-centred model. The centre offers family pracce services and includes a diabetes clinic. Building on the success of the Canada India Networking Initiative (CINI) in 2010, CINI 2014 will be held on June 19-23 at

the Sheraton Guildford located in Surrey, B.C. The theme of the conference is health and civil society.
