    Jennies Experience

    my third visit.

We came to a greater understanding of what

protection means in India. We learnt about migra-

tion, trafficking, street children and the difficulties

faced without an education. CINIs interventions toensure children get into school and out of labour areimpressive.

There is much more to say. We are honoured to be a

small part of this wonderful team. At every program

the commitment, quality and dedication of the staff

    and volunteers impressed us deeply.

We will return to Australia with an understanding of

the principles behind CINIs work and the effect in

the lives of many and spread this to other Australi-ans.

    - [Jennie Connaughton is the director of CIN Australia

she visited CINI on the month of February 2012]

2 weeks ago I arrived in Kolkata

    with my brother Peter and

    friend, Jackie Dillon who are

both Board members of CINI Australia. Peter had

never been to India and Jackie had been once for her

daughters marriage to Sam who is from Pune. This is

The results of empowering women by giving them

information about their rights and the support

demand them was evident in their confidence and

the changes in the village life.

We have all learnt so much about the huge work

done by CINI and now have a much greater under-

standing of the depth and extent of the work CINI is

doing with the poor. As well as seeing Diamond Har-

bour and many of the CINI ASHA programs we werelucky enough to travel to Mushidabad, Raiganj and

Siliguri with Dr Chaudhuri and Lady Slynn. We at-

tended a village meeting where a woman explained

to her village the mapping survey which showed

which houses had pregnant mothers, which had chil-

dren missing from school and which had toilets.

Womens self help groups, panchyat members

and children parliament members discussed the

prob- lems of their village and how to solve them

together. We saw village after village where women

negotiate with their government for good services.
