On Empire, they tend to use one main colour theme using a small selection of colours. They have used gold on the text and outlines to tie in with the costume that ‘Colin’ is wearing, which has gold features. I would say that the use of gold and red symbolises royalty or wealth. The background shows a crowd of people, almost like an army, the main character is in the foreground and standing out. This suggests that he is more important than all of the other people, or that he is trying to break away from the crowd. The banner here is in red, this makes it stand out and grabs the attention of the reader. There is also a small arrow facing to the right of the magazine. This is almost persuading you to read on, to follow the arrow into the magazine. The picture of ‘Spiderman’ keeps to the colour scheme, and includes a bright yellow/gold background which makes the image stand out. Also the actor is pointing towards the reader, making them look down his arm and into the picture. The image shows an action figure which makes me think that there will be an action packed article on it. Here is says ‘Exclusive’ in capitals in a box, this shows that what they are going to show us is new and unseen. It suggests that the reader will be the only one to find out about the article, it persuades the audience to buy the magazine and find out.

The figure is in front of the title, which suggests he is more important and dominant over the whole magazine. It would also suggest that, the character that is shown is the main character and that is why he is the single character on a white background.

The costume and the way the character is positioned is a strong stance that suggests physical power. His clothes are dirty and worn, this suggests that he has taken part in a fight. This insinuates that the film they are advertising will involve action, and the wand in his hand suggests that there is a magical element as well.

The most important titles and information appear to be in gold. The use of this colour gives the magazine a high class look and feel.

The use of different texts in various sizes helps to direct the readers attention to the important headlines. This suggests to me that they have worked out how their audience see their magazine, and how they can persuade the audience to read on.

They give the potential audience the option to choose their own front cover for this edition, this will give the audience the feeling that they are important and unique. This will help to sell more copies of the magazine.

By having such a famous figure on the front cover, the amount of potential readers are likely to increase. He is seen as a massive idol and women love him too, people will buy the magazine just to find out about him.

By naming famous idols on the main banner, it will again, bring in new audience members who are interested in the particular celebrities. The magazine creators are very clever, and know what will keep their current audience and bring in new members too.

The use of the plain background helps to make Johnny Depp stand out , as well as this, the text will also stand out, this will draw readers to the important text.

By having the text in red, it again draws attention to the cover and what articles are inside.

Depp is wearing quite casual clothes in this photograph, and is stood in a fairly relaxed way. This gives the impression that he is relaxed in the article/interview, and relaxed around the magazine. Suggesting that ‘Empire’ are trying to say that they are ‘friends’ with Depp
