OUR LADY OF MOUNT VIRGIN, GARFIELD, NJ

May 17, 2020 - 6th Sunday of Easter

“The old line says “if you want to make God laugh, tell Him your plans.” Many of us are diligent in our planning, making sure things are progressing smoothly, then disaster strikes, we don’t get the result that was intended. An unforeseen problem arises. Many times we may respond negatively. Why me? I did everything right! Here’s the thing – God has a different and better plan in store for you.

SPIRITUAL RENEWAL/EVANGELIZATION

To Evangelize is to live out our Baptism Call! We invite others to share our search for a deeper knowledge of love of God and invite them to pray. Through the words of Monastic Liturgy - to evangelize: “Let us live by justice and by mercy and wait with bright hope for the Lord to come.”

My Friends,

This Sunday is two weeks before Pentecost, but already the readings prepare us for that feast. The first reading from Acts shows us the conversion of the Samaritans, thanks to Philip's preaching and curing the sick. He did this through the power of the Holy Spirit. The Spirit makes Jesus present today, not just in the sacraments, but through us, His disciples.

Jesus knew that after His Resurrection appearances, He would not be visible as a man. Instead, He would live in all of His followers through the power of the Holy Spirit. That's why He tells the disciples that the Spirit will be with them and in them. So confirmation, the laying on of hands (Acts 8:17), reminds us that when God lives in us, we share in the power of the Holy Spirit.

In the second reading, Peter gives us practical advice. First, he tells us to be ready to explain our hope in the Lord. That hope comes from our faith in the Resurrection. In a world often marked by cynicism and hopelessness, do we stand out as people who offer hope and reassurance to others? When you hear that people saw and talked to Jesus after He rose from the dead, then hear that anyone who follows Jesus will share in that resurrection, you begin to have real hope. Next, Peter tells us to avoid sin, not because we won't be forgiven again, but to show that we can live a life free from sin, selfishness, and hatred. Freedom from sin allows us to give a good example of how to live. Abandoning selfishness allows us to love others without counting the cost. When we are free from hatred, we are able to forgive others as we have been forgiven. As we live in Jesus and He in us, our happiness will attract people to God.

In today’s Gospel Jesus promises that when He leaves the earth, He will not leave us orphaned. Today, He promises to send His Advocate, the Spirit of truth who will be with us always. Let us acknowledge the presence of the Holy Spirit and ask the Spirit to make us people of hope.

Loving and praying for you always,

Fr. Peter

May Crowning of the Blessed Mother We crowned the statue of Our Lady of Mount Virgin last Sunday on Mother’s Day as is our tradition. We truly missed having our children present. The Crown was offered in loving memory of my dear cousin Marie Yaccarino by her daughter Judy Guma. Judy has done this consecutively for many years for her mother’s living intention. It all changed this past year. Rest In Peace Big Marie! You are missed by all.

SIXTH SUNDAY OF EASTER

About the Gospel: Jesus promises to send the Holy Spirit to those who love Him. Followers of Jesus show that they love Him by keeping His commandments.

Jesus understands that sometimes it is hard to follow Him. He tells His friends that He will ask God to send the Holy Spirit as a helper. The disciples do not want Jesus to leave them. Jesus loves His disciples and He promises never to leave them alone. Jesus tells His followers that the Holy Spirit will always be with them as a teacher and a guide.

Question of the Week: When are some times you need the help of the Holy Spirit?

Family Prayer: O God, send us your spirit to be our helper and our guide. In the name of Jesus Christ, we pray. Amen.

Catholic Charities Bins To Open Again

Sentinel Management has notified Catholic Charities that our Donation Bins are anticipated to be open as of May 18th.

We are grateful for your patience and look forward to your continued support.

We need clothing, small appliances, shoes, linens, sheets, towels, stuffed animals, novels,

toys, knickknacks, and children’s books. We pray for an end of this virus in

our society and throughout the world. Thank you with all our heart.

Updated directives regarding Catholic Cemeteries approved by Cardinal Tobin for the Archdiocese of Newark.

On Mother’s Day, Sunday, May 10, all archdiocesan

cemeteries will be open for visitation from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and will be open for visitation every Sunday, thereafter.

Beginning on Monday, May 11, up to 10 family members will be permitted to attend a burial service. (Currently, two family members only are permitted.) Until further notice, all committal services are limited to immediate family only and not to exceed the recommendations of New Jersey Executive Order No. 107 (2020) and Administrative Order 2020-04, that gatherings of 10 persons or fewer are permitted.

Beginning on Monday, May 18, cemetery visitation will be permitted weekdays, Monday through Saturday, from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., after all interments are completed.

Memorial Day Masses at our all archdiocesan cemeteries are postponed until further notice. Announcements are forthcoming regarding a live-stream or video of Memorial Day Mass at Holy Cross Cemetery.

All persons entering archdiocesan cemetery and mausoleum premises must wear a facemask and practice social distancing as per the state’s mandate. Signs will be posted in cemeteries.

We urge all to please adhere to these guidelines for the protection of all. It would be disappointing to all if prior restrictions were reinforced if state and local mandates are not followed.

Heal Me

My God and Father, healer of the sick, I turn to You in my time of need. Hear my prayer.

O God, grant me the courage to bear my pain, and the confidence to hope that I shall be well

for I rely on Your love.

Bless the efforts of my Doctors and Nurses. Endow then with your wisdom to heal.

Bless the efforts of all who seek to restore me to health. May it be Your will to restore me to health, that I may

complete my years in happiness and well-being. Permit me to return to my loved ones and to my tasks.

Bless me with insight and strength to serve You wholeheartedly.

Amen

Sixth Sunday of Easter

“I will ask the Father, and He will give you . . . the Spirit of Truth.”

John 14:16-17

PRAYER

O Christ Jesus, when all is darkness and we feel our weakness and helplessness,

give us the sense of Your presence, Your love, and Your strength. Help us to have perfect trust

in Your protecting love and strengthening power,

so that nothing may frighten or worry us, for, living close to You, we shall see Your hand,

Your purpose, Your will through all things.
