● MILLER Homes North West hasannounced three new major

appointments to support its xpansion ofoperations.

David Ruffley has been appointed LandDirector, reflecting the firm’s return toland acquisitions.

“We are actively seeking good land to

build on and David’s appointment isintegral to these plans,” says Steve BirchMD of Miller Homes Northern Region.

David joins Miller with 25 years’experience in land and housing, havingbeen a planner and a land buyer. Herapidly ascended through FaircloughHomes, from planner to divisional landand planning director, a role he had fornine years.

This prepared him for time as EliteHomes MD and then to WolseyResidential Finance. He was a member ofthe national HBF planning committee for10 years and chair of the regionalcommittee.

Sharing a Fairclough Homes heritage isDave McDonald. He joined the companyin 1988 as a quantity surveyor andprogressed to chief quantity surveyor by2005 when the company was acquired byMiller Homes. He has been theircommercial manager for the past fiveyears and has now been appointedcommercial director. He heads a team ofsix, responsible for ensuring that the buildand sales teams have everything theyneed.

Clare Noakes has been appointed salesmanager, having been the project sales andmarketing consultant for Miller Homes atThe Rock development in Bury towncentre since its launch in July 2010.

Prior to joining Miller Homes, Clarehad run her own consultancy business andwas previously the sales and marketingmanager at Crosby Lend Lease.

“All three appointments are highlysignificant for us,” adds Steve. “They signalour expansion plans in the North Westand will support us as we move into avery positive 2011.”

● LANDLORD Richard Globe iskeen to find out how many

landlords actually know about orunderstand what their legalresponsibilities are, when it comesto letting out a property andself-management.

“For example, a number of veryserious issues affecting the privaterented sector have recently come tolight,” he says. “Therefore, it isimperative that every single landlordis made aware of them.

“Too often the residential industryhas its reputation tarnished by firsttime or accidental landlords, whoobviously have not done anyadvanced preparation or went toseek essential advice from experts inthe field.”

He says that when a problem doesarise people seem to make mattersworse by trying to resolve thingsthemselves.

He adds: “It is a known fact thattenants today know more abouttheir legal rights and have greatpleasure in exercising them, leavingthe poor landlord in a very confusedstate.

“As a former DSS tenant landlordmyself with more than 40 years’experience behind me in residentialproperty lettings, I am offering freeguidance to anyone who feels theywould benefit from such help – ifonly to avoid complicatedsituations.”

Richard can be contacted on0151-639-6253, 9am to 8pm,Monday to Friday, or via email [email protected]

MAKE no mistake, the Scandinavianshave designs on us– whether they’rekeeping us glued to

the TV with dark Danish crimeseries The Killing or winning usover to their stylish homefurnishings.

While a select few may wish toemulate the scruffy look ofDeputy Superintendent SarahLund (Sofie Grabol), who wearsthick, knitted jumpers from theFaroe Islands, transformingrooms is arguably more visuallyimpressive.

After all, what’s not to likeabout furniture that has timelessgood looks, and colour schemesand settings that seem to makethe most of every inch of spaceand every ray of light?

That’s the essence of cool, calm, sleek Scandi style. Thoseappealing qualities probablyexplain why we don’t seem to beable to get enough of it.

“Scandinavians don’t likeshowing off, so their style isunderstated and more aboutrelaxing and enjoying your homethan making it a showpiece,”says Anne Tiainen-Harris,founder of Cloudberry Living, which specialises in interiorpieces and accessories byScandinavian designers.

“It’s all about simple, pure andcalm beauty combined with ahigh degree of functionality.

“I think it’s hugely popular inBritain because space is veryexpensive here and Scandi stylehelps create the illusion of spaceand airiness in any interior.”

While connoisseurs may yearnfor pieces by iconic designerssuch as Denmark’s ArneJacobsen – whose Butterfly chairwas famously straddled in theSixties by a naked ChristineKeeler – or fellow countrymenincluding Henrik Pedersen andVerner Panton, most of usprobably get our Scandi-fix ataffordable Swedish homestoreIkea.

Its popularity was highlightedby recent Mintel research whichfound that we buy almost 10% ofour furniture from its 18 UKstores, even though some may betempted to commit a crimeagainst the authors of its flatpackinstructions.

Whether you’re already aScandi convert, or keen to makethe switch, check out this guideto sourcing the style.

DANISH DELIGHTDark settings add to the

atmosphere of BBC Four’s TheKilling, but in reality Danish

interiors are about unclutteredspaces, white painted walls andrichly grained wooden floors.

“If white’s too cold and starkfor your taste, opt instead for asoft colour palette of pale greysand blues which are on trend thisyear,” advises Gail Abbott, author of Living With Light, aguide to decorating theScandinavian way.

“Include an accent colour –blue or red is characteristic ofthe style – which can instantlygive a lift to a white room.”GET THE LOOK: A classicDanish-designed light, the LouisPoulsen PH5 white pendant, is£432 fromCloudberryLiving.

SWEDISHSTARS

Fans of thebrooding BBCOne seriesWallander,

featuring Swedishdetective Kurt

Wallander (Kenneth Branagh),have plenty of sources to plunderto replicate his style.

Ikea, pivotal in shaping theBritish perception of Swedishdesign, has won us over to pale, blonde furniture and slim sofas, not to mention helped us cheaplyclear up our clutter with itsbest-selling storage solution, theBilly bookcase, which starts from£19.

But there are a wealth of othercovetable ranges offered by othercompanies, which don’t require ascrewdriver.

“Scandinavian modern design,as a style, first emerged betweenthe first and second world warsand peaked in popularity in theFifties,” says Rich Harris, whocelebrates both Swedish andDanish style at his web-basedcompany Chairs andSkyscrapers.

“After a lull, it’s now ultra-chicagain as the look fits so well withmodern living. People arerealising that its quality makes itdurable, and its subtle stylingmakes it versatile and able to

MyFirstHOME

JaneCostellowriterWhere was the family home you grew upin and what was it like?It was in Allerton and my parents still live there. The house is very bright and sunny, with a lovelygarden which was the setting of many a barbecueover the years.

What is your clearest memory of thehouse? The bedroom in which I closeted myself duringmy teenage years. It was there that I’d gaze at myKeanu Reeves posters, play Purple Rain until myears bled and had endless discussions withschool friends about the opposite sex.

Where was the first house you boughtyourself and what did it cost? The first home I owned was a coach house inGrassendale Park, which I bought the first time Ireturned to Liverpool after a stint in London. Ithad two tiny bedrooms and an even tinier yard. Ithink it cost about £70,000, which was well overmy budget but I didn’t care.

What made you want to buy it?I’ve always loved historic buildings and this wasGrade 2 listed, a real chocolate box-style house.Plus, the location was gorgeous – quiet andsurrounded by all those other lovely houses. Istill love that part of the city.

What are the important things you lookfor when buying a house?Light, bright rooms, a nice sunny garden and a bigfancy kitchen if possible.

Are you a DIY trier or do you leave it tothe experts?I leave it to someone better than the experts -my dad. He’s a lot cheaper than them too.

What is the one thing you love mostabout your current home? The location. I love living back in Liverpool – I’dbeen away for more than six years. I’m nearAllerton Road, with all its shops and bars, closeto the lovely Calderstones park, and – mostimportantly – lots of my friends live here too.

● When decorating a room, theskirting boards should be the lastthing you tackle, apart from the floor. If you’re just doing the skirting boards, you’ll be amazed by what a differencerevamping them can make to thewhole room.● It’s essential to sand thoroughlybefore painting. Use an electric sanderon the flat parts and sandpaper wherethe sander can’t reach. Even if theexisting paint is in reasonablecondition, you still need to sand it tohelp the new paint adhere, especially ifthe old paint is gloss. Clean the woodthoroughly after sanding.● If your skirting boards are in poorcondition, scrape and sand off anychipped, flaking or cracked paint andfill holes with flexible wood filler. Sandsmooth when the filler is dry and thenwipe clean.● If you’re painting over bare wood, apply a couple of coats of knottingsolution to the knots first to seal themand stop the resin in them fromruining your paintwork. Apply(quick-drying) primer and undercoatnext, or a combined product.● Use masking tape to protect yourwalls and floor when painting yourskirting boards, but don’t leave it ontoo long because it can form a sealwith the dry paint and tear the paintwhen removed. The safest option is toremove and reapply the masking tapebetween coats and to use low-tackmasking tape.

● ACCORDING to a newsurvey for Crown Paints,

20% of couples who livetogether are at war over howto decorate their home. And60% of newlyweds say thattheir different ideas about howto decorate are one of thebiggest causes of argumentsbetween them.

Just 40% of women arehappy to compromise theirtastes to keep their partnerhappy, compared to 60% ofmen.

While 15% of men suffer insilence about their partner’schoice of colour anddecoration, women are muchless likely to do this, with only7% admitting to letting theirpartner have free rein with thedecor.

The study wascommissioned for the launchof Crown’s Colour for Lifecounselling service. Theservice is aimed at coupleswho live together, or areplanning to, and are strugglingto agree about how todecorate their home.

Warring couples get a homevisit from a Crown colourconsultant, who will advisethem about how best tocombine their tastes andwhich colours and decoratingtechniques will suit theirhome.

Q What’s the best sort ofpaint to use on my skirtingboards?A I always recommendwater-based quick-dryingwood paint because it’snice to use, easy to cleanoff things it shouldn’t be on,and takes very little time todry, although you usuallyneed to do quite a fewcoats. In my opinion, nothing beats whiteskirting boards and thegood thing about whitewater-based wood paint isthat it doesn’t yellow overtime, unlike oil-basedalternatives.

GUIDE ... to interiors andbuying

by JANET TANSLEY

IT’S the time of year whenwe all like to get a handleon sprucing up our homesand adding a littlespringtime sparkle to tired

rooms.Renewing fittings like door

handles, light switches andbathroom accessories incontemporary finishes canreally give your interior a newlease of life without breakingthe bank.

And one Liverpool onlinehomes store –www.lovehandles.uk.com –specialises in stylish doorfurniture and complementaryproducts that add thoseall-important finishing touchesto your home.

The company is thebrainchild of Craig Sellers, aformer marketing director withYale locks and friend andbusiness partner Ray Bobby, who has worked in thearchitectural ironmongeryindustry in Liverpoolfor 30 years.

They set up RBArchitecturalHardware fiveyears ago, andhave progressedfrom there being just the two ofthem in a small office inRodney Street to having a staffof 12 and a yearly turnover of£1.5m which is steadilygrowing.

Craig says: “Our industryhas a very traditional approachbut we have tried to buck thetrend by coming up with

innovative ideas and productsthat set us apart from thetraditional way thatironmongery and hardware isperceived.”

In particular, Craig wanted toappeal to women, whom hebelieves make the importantdesign choices in the home, anddecided to have a series ofinstructional videos producedto help communicate the LoveHandles brand message ofbeing fun, informative andgreat value for money.

And he knew who just hecould get in on the act – hisdaughter Chloe.

Chloe, 11, wants to be a TVpresenter when

she's older soCraig was ableto provide her

first experience ofappearing in front of the

camera.And maybe the message that

if an 11-year-old can do it... isreassuring to customers, asCraig and Chloe show peoplehow they can transform doorsin any room with a bit of familybanter.

“It’s important that ourcustomers are making

informed choices such as whichtype of door handle they needor choosing the right lock,”says Craig. “The videos help toexplain this in a fun and easyto understand way.”

Love Handles has a massivechoice in door handles to suitevery budget from traditionalstyles to the latestcontemporary dual finishes.

STRUGGLING first timebuyers are increasinglyfinding it easier to get onto the property ladder ifthey buy a home withfriends or family.

But with a houselikely to be the biggestpurchase of a lifetime, the advice from theNational Association ofEstate Agents, is that itis important to get itright from the start!

Peter Bolton King,Chief Executive of theNAEA, says: “At a timewhen a lack of mortgagefinance is hindering firsttime buyers, opting tobuy with a friend orrelative can represent asensible way of gettinginto the market.

“Twice the number ofbedrooms doesn'talways mean twice thecost, so sharing theprice of a home, andthe deposit – as well asbills and maintenancecosts – can make realfinancial sense.

“Importantly, bothowners don'tnecessarily need to livein the property. Aperson living in Londoncould invest in a townwith lower house priceswith a friend who livesthere, and rent out thesecond bedroom.”

But he warns: “Foranyone consideringentering into a jointownership I wouldstress the importance ofa transparent, openrelationship between allparties involved toensure a smoothprocess.

“Remember, this maybe your home, but it'salso a businesstransaction and one ofthe biggest decisionsyou'll ever take.”

So...● Consider the worstcase scenario: buying ahome should be a

positive experience, andone of the perks ofbuying with friends orfamily should be a highlevel of trust, but thatshouldn't be to thedetriment of legalities.Consult lawyers about aco-ownership contractand agree in advancewhat will happen if oneowner's circumstanceschange.● Get the rightmortgage: There aremortgages that existspecifically for this typeof purchase, so shoparound for the bestdeal. By combining inthis way it is possible toattain a mortgage ofhigher value, due to theincrease in incomeafforded by applyingwith a joint wage.● Keep paperwork inorder: Documentsassociated with thepurchase should remainaccessible to bothparties. Any documentsrelating to the propertyor mortgage should alsobe in the names of eachof the co-buyers.● Count the pennies:Often a joint bankaccount is the best wayto ensure thatmortgage/utilitypayments are metpromptly. If all partieshave access to theaccount it also ensuresthat any financialtransactions are handledtransparently and arenot the soleresponsibility of oneowner.● Finally – Know whoowns the sofa: To avoiddisputes, drawing up aninventory of non-shareditems at the start of theresidential period canensure that there is noconfusion about whichitems belong to whom. This should also help ifone owner decides tomove out.

If you’re buying pots, choose thesame types – a row of three or fourlarge ones looks much better thanan assorted mix of pots you mighthave accumulated over the years.

Historically, annual beddingplants have been used to brightenthe scene, offering a wealth ofcolour over the summer months, but in recent years gardeners withlittle time and less money haverecognised the merit of permanentplantings, where only the surface ofthe soil needs to be scraped off andreplaced by new compost everyyear, rather than the whole plantingscheme.

More gardeners are also seeingthe merits of evergreens, which addstructure and form to the patio allyear round. Clipped box balls, forinstance, look great in tall, contemporary pots.

Summer-flowering bulbs such asthe wonderful agapanthus, orAfrican lily, look fantastic in pots, providing a striking display ofball-shaped 13cm (5in) flowerclusters in blues or whites, late inthe summer. Use a large deep pot toaccommodate the roots and growthese sun lovers by themselves incontainers, preferably somewheresheltered.

Plant the bulbs now and you willhave to be patient. It may take acouple of years for the flowers toappear, but if you keep themsomewhere sheltered near thehouse or under a porch during thewinter months, they should comeback year after year.

You may have the popularVerbena bonariensis in yourperennial border, but now you canbuy a smaller version, V.bonariensis “Lollipop” to enjoy thesame incredible clusters of lavenderflowers on low-growing, mound-like

plants. It’s ideal for pots, beinglow-maintenance, drought tolerantand good for cutting, growing to60cm (24in). Available fromwww.suttons.co.uk or phone 0844922 0606.

Ornamental grasses can also addmovement and colour. Fountaingrass, Pennesetum setaceum“Rubrum”, is a natural for pots, filling them with its arching habitand rich burgundy colour.

An alternative is Imperatacylindrica “Rubra”, aslow-spreading type with clumps of

bright green leaves 50cm (20in)long, whose tips turn blood-red,followed by the rest of the leaves.Silvery white flowers appear late insummer to keep the pot ablaze. Itlikes moist, rich soil in full sun orpart shade and will need mulchingin winter for protection.

To add structure to any summerpot display, add a tropical-lookingcanna or go for the sword-likeleaved phormium or cordyline, although these will need protectionin the winter.

However, there is still a place for

annuals, particularly for those whohave the time to give the tenderloving care these colourful summersizzlers will need to last throughoutthe warmer months. If you want ablaze of colour, have your fill offuchsias, geraniums, osteospermums and climbing sweetpeas, but try new varieties too.

Petunia “Black Velvet”, theworld’s first black petunia, developed by flower breedingcompany Ball Colegrave, is wellworth a try. I started plug plants offon a windowsill and they are

POTS OF PLEASURE: Geraniums are patio pot classics, with their warm colours, but the canna lily, insert, can provide a touch of drama

BestOfTheBunchBluebell(Hyacinthoides)BLUEBELLS are the essence of theEnglish countryside in spring, creating asea of blue in woods nationwide, just asthe trees are coming into leaf.

They look particularly striking undertrees with white or grey bark, such asthe birch.

Plant bulbs in autumn, 4-6cm deep ininformal clumps of 20 or more, leaving3cm between the bulbs. Englishbluebells (H. nonscripta) prefer lightsoils and thin grass, while Spanishbluebells (H. hispanica), which arelarger and coarser, will settle in coarsergrass, but shouldn’t be planted withtheir English relative or they will soontake over.

Experts at the National Trust arepredicting an early and fantastic displayof bluebells this year following the mildand dry start to 2011.

To help keep people posted aboutwhen bluebells look their best theNational Trust has set up the first everinteractive Bluebell Watch map atwww.nationaltrust.org.uk/bluebellwatch.

Thingstodothisweek● Sow fast-maturing and late-flowering annuals, herbs and vegetables including runner beans, earlycarrots and parsnips.● Thin out hardy annual, vegetable and otherseedlings sown outdoors.● Begin to harden off summer bedding andprovide protection if frost is forecast.● Plant onion sets as soon as possible.● Cut lawns with naturalised bulbs growing inthem, once they’ve finished flowering. Keepmower blades high.● Prune spring-flowering shrubs over threeyears old as they finish flowering.● Put new aquatic plants in the pond, usingspecial baskets and a top dressing of pea gravel.● Fit collars around the stems of youngcabbages, cauliflowers and Brussels sprouts todeter cabbage root fly.● Earth up early potatoes.● Feed newly planted hedges.● Prick out outdoor tomato seedlings intoindividual pots when they are large enough tohandle.● Add a top dressing of pea gravel to newlyplanted aquatic containers.● Water newly planted trees and shrubs, particularly those that were container-grown.
