Do You Know What a Kachina Doll Is?

According to the Cameron Trading Post website, to understand Hopi Kachina dolls, one must understand something of their purpose. The Kachina doll of the Hopi, which so many admire and collect, is the representation of a Hopi spirit or deity. Kachina dolls originally were, and still are, made to be given away as gifts to Hopi children so that they may learn the different Kachinas and the stories and religious significance attached to them.Bella Vista resident, Jane Dury, has a beautiful collection of Kachina dolls outside her apartment on the 1st floor. Some were made and given to her by friends, some she bought and some she made herself. Jane and her daughter Al, put the dolls outside her door in order to share them with everyone. If you have questions, she would be more than glad to tell you about them. Thanks, Jane, for teaching us all something new.

Jane has a very interesting display of Kachina dolls.

Happy 2021!Happy New Year, Bella Vista! We had a really fun and short little get-together with snacks from the kitchen, sparkling grape juice, toasts, and a ball drop at 3:30 p.m. Actually we enjoyed dropping the ball so much that we dropped it again right after the first time. LOL! (That’s a cell phone shortcut that means Laugh Out Loud.) We toasted to good health and a much calmer 2021. Hope you all have a wonderful new year and that everyone stays safe and well!

Maureen looks happy to ring in 2021.

Marilyn was definitely ready for the new year.

Roseann helped keep the party rolling with sparkling grape juice for toasting.

Inge shares a toast with everyone.

Marion tooting her own horn for New Year’s Eve

Margaret and Darlene brought in the new year with a bang as they shared a Christmas cracker.

February Is Black History Month

February has been officially Black History Month since 1976. Every U.S. President since then has officially designated it so. The History Channel website defines Black History Month as an annual celebration of achievements by African Americans and a time for recognizing the central role of blacks in U.S. history. Other countries around the world also officially recognize a month to celebrating the achievements of black people. Those countries include our close neighbor Canada and the United Kingdom. There are so many black people who have done amazing things. One fun way that we can honor them is to remember those people and what they’ve done. Can you list five African Americans who have had made an impact on history and what they are known for? If you write them on a piece of paper with your name on it and turn it to Jennifer, you will receive $100 Bella Bucks for each correct answer. And on a final note, Martin Luther King Day (which is in January) is now considered a national day of service. Maybe in honor of him, we could all be just a little kinder to one another. Maybe go out of your way to say “Hello” to someone, help someone with the door, or sit with someone new at meal time. This writer believes that the way to peace is through kindness and love for everyone regardless of any differences. We hope a better world can start right here at Bella Vista!

Nate Is GreatNate brings our mail, but he is so much more for our community. He is always smiling and offering kind words. He is quick to say “Hello” and “Happy Birthday” and “Have a Great Day!” He has a wife and a daughter and lives in Weaverville. They wanted to do something for us during the pandemic so they organized their church and brought six huge boxes of goodies to eat and health and beauty supplies for our residents. Nate loves to get involved with what is going on and often will even let us dress him for the part. Thanks Nate, We’re lucky to have you!

Remember WhenIt’s always fun to look back for some years and see how much, or shall we say how little, things cost. This Grocery and Meat Market sales paper dates to 1933 and was donated by Irene R. Can you imagine paying only 6 cents for 6 pounds of sweet potatoes or 10 cents a pound for pork chops? That sure would be great. Thanks, Irene, for taking us on a trip down Memory Lane.

Nate let our residents dress him up as an elf for Christmas

Angela spreads the sweet message of kindness on her shirt, mask and hat.

Way to go, Betty! She was the first at Bella Vista to get her shot!

The Covid VaccineCOVID-19 has impacted absolutely everyone in some way or another. We’ve quarantined, spaced out, limited our numbers, worn masks and definitely washed our hands! It is so wonderful that there are really smart scientists in the world who are able to come through with a vaccine and ways to combat this awful disease. Yea for science and scientists and vaccines that can hopefully make this Corona virus go away.

Laughing Is Exercise for the Insides

These were given by Elizabeth. They are real bloopers that actually appeared in church bulletins and were announced in church services:

The Fasting and Prayer Conference includes meals.

Ladies, don’t forget the rummage sale. It’s a chance to get rid of those things not worth keeping around the house. Bring your husbands.

Don’t let worry kill you off — let the church help.

For those of you who have children and don’t know it, we have a nursery downstairs.

Next Thursday there will be tryouts for the choir. They need all the help they can get.

A bean supper will be held on Tuesday evening in the church hall. Music will follow.

Ladies Bible Study will be held Thursday morning at 10 a.m. All ladies are invited to lunch in the Fellowship Hall after the B.S. is done.

Chinese New Year: Year of the Ox

2021 is the Chinese Year of the Ox. What does that mean? Well, according to the internet (which of course is completely accurate) the Ox is the second of all zodiac animals. According to one myth, the Jade Emperor said the order would be decided by the order in which they arrived to his party. The Ox was about to be the first to arrive, but Rat tricked Ox into giving him a ride. Then, just as they arrived, Rat jumped down and landed ahead of Ox. Thus, Ox became the second animal. (FYI — 2020 was the year of the Rat).Recent years that were also Year of the Ox include: 1925, 1937, 1949, 1961, 1973, 1985, 1997 and 2009. If you or a loved one was born in one of these years then these are your characteristics according to the Chinese. Oxen are the hard workers in the background, intelligent and reliable, but never demanding praise. They believe that everyone should do what’s asked of them and stay within their bounds. Though they are kind, it’s difficult for them to understand persuasion using pathos. Rarely losing their temper, they think logically and make great leaders. In Chinese culture, the Ox is a valued animal. Because of its role in agriculture, positive characteristics, such as being hardworking and honest, are attributed to it. Your lucky colors are blue, yellow, and green. Your lucky numbers are 1 and 4. And your lucky flowers are lily of the valley and lucky bamboo.Congratulations all you Oxen out there. You sound like really great people. Let’s hope that the Year of the Ox will be an extremely great one!

Marilyn is ready to celebrate, as she was born

in the year of the Ox.

Angela is our youngest born in a year of the Ox.

Frances, your lucky colors are blue, yellow and green

because you were born in the year of the Ox.

Bev, you are kind, a logical thinker and would make a

great leader, because you were born in the year of the Ox.
