The energy of true religion

‘To love God and love your neighbour’ – this is one of the most attractive of the sayings of Jesus. It is an encouragement to live fully with what brings the greatest joy in life – true love of God and the neighbour. It is at the heart of good religion, and what attracts many to Jesus. Bad religion puts law above love. Bad religion fights for the partial truth of religion. We risk being victims of bad religion, just as we can be victims of bad nationalism, bad psychology or any other bad way of living. Jesus’ life was to propose good religion and to live by it. The religion of some of the Pharisees was bad, in that it was incomplete in its scope. We admire those who give energy in love and service. We are proud of people we know whose lives make a great and good difference to others. We know that our family and neighbourhood, parish and school, workplace and leisure time have been enriched by the self-sacrificing love of many people, young and old. ‘He gave it his all’ – we say that of a good player at the end of a match. We say of parents that they “were always there for the children. May we give all we have in our lives, giving in love, knowing that all we give is itself a gift from God, the giver of all good gifts.!

Picture Jesus with a sick person; watch him touching the person. This would he against the law! What would you say to him? Lord, let love be the guiding principle of all I say and think.

NOVEMBER—MONTH OF ALL SOULS

We will soon begin the month of November when we traditionally remember and celebrate the lives of those for whom life has changed and the door of death has closed behind them. We mourn the poignancy of their passing and, at the same time, we celebrate their entry into a new and fuller life with God who has called them home. Each Mass during the month of November will be offered for the deceased members and friends of our Parish family. If you would like your loved ones included in the Masses for November, please use the envelopes which you will find on the table at the front door of the Church or with your Weekly Planned Giving Envelopes. A ‘Remembrance Book’ where you can record the names of your deceased loved ones will be placed at the foot of the Sanctuary.

BEREAVEMENT MASS

This Mass is for anyone who has lost a family member or friend in the past 12 months or for anyone who is grieving a loved one. The Mass will be on Tuesday 10th November at 7.30pm. Everyone is welcome to come to the Mass and light a candle in memory of their loved one.

IMPORTANT PLEA ABOUT REGISTERING FOR MASS

We continue to be blessed with no community transmission of COVID in Queensland and the latest advice from the Archdiocese is that current arrangements about maximum numbers permitted at Mass, maintaining social distancing, sanitizing and cleaning requirements remain the same. Our maximum is 80 people and everyone must be registered on the sheets found at the entrance to the church. Noncompliance of all of these requirements can result in large on-the-spot fines for Parishes.

Each of our weekend Masses is usually fully subscribed and, at each weekend Mass, there are often parishioners turning up in the hope of finding a spare spot. Sadly these parishioners often have to be turned away because of the strict requirements about our maximum capacity.

Because of this, we ask that if you have registered, but for whatever reason are unable to attend, you please let us know as early as possible either by text or phoning Bryan on

0448 380 887 or Marie on 0412 981 026. This will enable us to cross you off our list so that those who have missed out may be able to take your place.

We also ask that when you register, you provide the Christian name, as well as the surname, of all attendees even when they are in your family.

All these requirements are a burden on us all, but by complying with a positive spirit we are making sure that we can continue to come to Mass to receive Jesus in the Eucharist and to thank God for the many blessings He has given us.

them with great joys and cherished memories on all their days ahead.

HOLY SPIRIT PARISH FAMILY CHRISTMAS

TREE – ANGEL TAGS

Christmas will be soon upon us. You are all invited to participate in the Holy Spirit Parish family Christmas tree. In past years, we have supplied tags for you to write your name, and the names of your loved ones, which then get hung on the tree. Due to the COVID restrictions, we instead will invite you to please send in the names of the people you would like to be written on the tags. We will then write the names and place them on the Christmas tree from the beginning of December. The names will be blessed at the 6.30pm Mass on Christmas Eve. Please email us, or bring your names to the office starting this weekend.

As in all families this is a time to also remember those family members who are no longer with us but who will always be cherished. As a way of remembering those parishioners who have gone to their eternal rest or who due to ill health or frailty can no longer celebrate Mass with us you are also invited to fill out a tag for them.

Let us all celebrate Christmas as one Parish family.

READINGS FOR 30TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

Acknowledgement: Excerpts from the English translation of the Roman Missal © 2010, International Commission on English in the Liturgy (ICEL). All rights reserved.

FIRST READING Exodus 22:20-26 (JB) A reading from the book of Exodus The Lord said to Moses, 'Tell the sons of Israel this, "You must not molest the stranger or oppress him, for you lived as strangers in the land of Egypt. You must not be harsh with the widow, or with the orphan; if you are harsh with them, they will surely cry out to me, and be sure I shall hear their cry; my anger will flare and I shall kill you with the sword, your own wives will be widows, your own children orphans. "If you lend money to any of my people, to any poor man among you, you must not play the usurer with him: you must not demand interest from him. "If you take another's cloak as a pledge, you must give it back to him before sunset. It is all the covering he has; it is the cloak he wraps his body in; what else would he sleep in? If he cries to me, I will listen, for I am full of pity."' The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. RESPONSORIAL PSALM Ps 17:2-4, 47, 51 (JB) R. I love you, Lord, my strength. I love you, Lord, my strength, my rock, my fortress, my saviour. My God is the rock where I take refuge; my shield, my mighty help, my stronghold. The Lord is worthy of all praise: when I call I am saved from my foes. R. Long life to the Lord, my rock! Praised be the God who saves me. He has given great victories to his king and shown his love for his anointed. R.

SECOND READING 1 Thessalonians 1:5-10 (JB) A reading from the first letter of St Paul to the Thessalonians You observed the sort of life we lived when we were with you, which was for your instruction, and you were led to become imitators of us, and of the Lord; and it was with the joy of the Holy Spirit that you took to the gospel, in spite of the great opposition all round you. This has made you the great example to all believers in Macedonia and Achaia since it was from you that the word of the Lord started to spread - and not only throughout Macedonia and Achaia, for the news of your faith in God has spread everywhere. We do not need to tell other people about it: other people tell us how we started the work among you, how you broke with idolatry when you were converted to God and became servants of the real, living God; and how you are now waiting for Jesus, his Son, whom he raised from the dead, to come from heaven to save us from the retribution which is coming. The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION John 14:23 (JB) Alleluia, alleluia! All who love me will keep my words, and my Father will love them and we will come to them. Alleluia!

Page 6: ATHOLI OMMUNITY OF THE HOLY SPIRIT PINE RIVERS

GOSPEL Matthew 22:34-40 (JB) A reading from the holy Gospel according to Matthew When the Pharisees heard that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees they got together and, to disconcert him, one of them put a question, 'Master, which is the greatest commandment of the Law?' Jesus said, 'You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the greatest and the first commandment. The second resembles it: You must love your neighbour as yourself. On these two commandments hang the whole Law, and the Prophets also.' The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

AN ACT OF SPIRITUAL COMMUNION

When we are unable physically to attend Mass, we invite you to consider the practice of spiritual communion.

My Jesus,

I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament.

I love You above all things,

and I desire to receive You into my soul.

Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally,

come at least spiritually into my heart.

I embrace You as if You were already there

and unite myself wholly to You.

Never permit me to be separated from You.

Amen.

30TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

“You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your soul and with all your mind.” – Matthew 22:37

Do you put other “gods” before God? Is your love of money, power, status, comfort or some personal possession greater than your love for God? Do you really recognize that everything you have and that every-thing you are is a gift from God? The good news – it’s not too late to put God first in all things in your life.

THE TREE THAT APPEARS IN FOG

God of misty mornings,

We thank you for moments of clarity.

There are times when life feels like winter,

Cold and foggy.

We want to stay under the blankets.

But then we catch a glimpse of you,

A bit like something taking shape in the mist,

And slowly we discern your presence,

Not always clear but unmistakable.

Lead us this day to know you a little more deeply

And to surrender to you, as St Ignatius prayed,

Our liberty, memory, understanding, our entire will.

Give us only your love and your grace.

That is enough.

Amen.

IMPORTANT REMINDER

It has been a blessing to be able to come to Mass in greater numbers. In our church we are allowed 80 people at any one time and of course registering beforehand and getting to Mass early makes things easier when we actually get here. Please note the 9.00am Thursday school Masses have resumed which unfortunately means that sometimes there will not be space for parishioners to attend Mass at that time. Please note also that weekend Masses, particularly the 9.00am Sunday Mass is often oversubscribed. For that reason it is essential to register, either online or by calling the office. Registration needs to be completed before 4.00pm on the Friday before the weekend. After that, the office is unattended and any registration will not be recorded on the sign-in sheet. The increased numbers mean that we all have a responsibility to comply with all the social distancing, sanitising and cleaning requirements that the Archdiocese and Qld Government have mandated and to stay home if we are unwell. These requirements are important to keep us all safe and to make sure our church is allowed to stay open and is a safe place to worship. We each have a part to play. By making sure we keep 1.5m away from each other when we sign in, when sitting at the spots marked with dots and when we walk down for Holy Communion, we are doing our bit. By sanitising our hands on entering and leaving the church and wiping where we have sat with disinfectant wipes, we are doing out bit. These measures are important for all of us but especially so for those of us in the vulnerable groups. The Queensland Health Guidelines have identified the following as vulnerable groups: • Queenslanders over 70 years of age • Queenslanders over 65 with underlying health issues • First Nations Queenslanders over the age of 50 with one or more chronic

disease. Together we can do what is required and together our faith will get us through these challenging times. If you have any concerns or would like to discuss these requirements, please call Marie on 0412 981 026.
