Whenever the Vikings score a touchdown, Cragly gets a dog-treat (and with the statistically 2nd highest offense in the NFL right now, that’s a lot of treats), and so when Cragly watches a football do you know what she likes to see?

What does she watch for?

Results! And so does God with us.

When we see Goodness and the Holy Spirit working in people’s lives, that is time to cheer (like the Vikings game last week).

When we see people turn away and /or keep doing the same old ineffective thing, that is time to weep (like the Giants game last week. . . and the two previous weeks)

The Pharisees refused to change their minds - and they lost. They produced no results other than the status quo. If we arrive in heaven the same as when we were young, that’s not enough. The Holy Spirit inspired St. Paul to write in the Bible, “When I was a child, I used to speak like a child, think like a child, reason like a child; when I became a man, I put away childish things. (1 Cor 13:11)”

Are we holding on to any childish things or behaviors? Yes, Jesus calls us to be “like children” which is different than “Being childish.” Children GROW. They gain re-

sults mentally, physically, and should be growing spiritually. They, and us, shouldn’t be at the same spiritual stage at 30 (or 50, or 70) as when they, and us, were 7. God made us and wrote the law of growth within us. He’s looking for fruit, Jesus says, in multiple ways throughout his ministry

What results? Mass attendance? That’s only part of it, but an important part. That shows we’re growing in piety and reverence and respect for the sacred things (and days) that belong to the Lord.

Growing in kindness, generosity, prayer, humility, love and forgiveness. If we’ve been at our job, for example, five years and still detest, resent, and complain about a specific coworker, classmate, or president. . .we’re not growing. If we’re not growing, then we’re not going in the right direction. God doesn’t like rotten fruit.

In Christ,

God’s Way Verses the World

Today in our first reading from Ezekiel, we hear these words, “The Lord’s way is not fair!”

Many of us have heard the phrase “Knowledge is Power”. Having “Book Knowledge” gives us power in the secular world. However, at times we can become perplexed with the fact that we have acquired Earthly Knowledge and misuse the power by berating others by looking down upon them since we know more than they do. Ezekiel goes on to say, “Is it my way that is unfair, or rather, are not your ways unfair?”

In order to appropriately apply our faith we need to look closely at how we treat others who are less fortunate than us. We need to ask our-selves, are we using our knowledge for the com-mon good of others? The hymn we sing this weekend sums it up well. “Lord, whose love in humble service bore the weight of human need, who upon the cross, forsaken, offered mercy’s perfect deed.” It is imperative that we apply our Christian faith in all we do. As we proceed in our Earthly work we use our gifts for the purpose of helping others.

ST. VINCENT DE PAUL SOCIETY

This lay organization is inspired by Gospel val-ues. Meetings are held at 7:30 on the 2nd & 4th Monday of the month. Attend meetings to see if you might be called to this vocation of helping our neighbors in need. We offer members the opportunity to grow spiritually, cultivate friend-ships and provide person-to-person service to those who call on us for assistance.

YOUTH MINISTRY

with Bob Morris 732-295-3630 ext. 31

[email protected] Follow us on twitter: YouthStMartha

Meetings: Most Sundays 5-7 pm downstairs

Beach Cleanup: Clean Ocean Action will be holding their annual fall beach cleanup Satur-day, October 21. Many of our young people have enjoyed participating in past cleanups. With the summer beach season having just ended, the fall cleanup usually yields more gar-bage than the spring. Anyone from middle school and up that would like to help a worthy cause and earn service hours if needed, please let me know so I can register us as a group.

Rise Against Hunger: I recently had the pleasure of meeting with a local Rotarian (member of the Rotary club) about a service activity that Youth Ministry will participate in for the first time. On Sat-urday, October 28 at St. Dominic’s, volunteers will pack meals that are shipped around the world to areas with food shortages due to pov-erty, war, or natural disasters. The meals are packed in a powder form that become full and nutritional meals when water is added. Rise Against Hunger is currently serving areas in the US and the Caribbean that were affected by Hurri-canes Harvey, Irma, and Maria. They also help impoverished areas by establishing training pro-grams to help the locals with better agricultural methods. Volunteer shifts will be available from 7:00am to 3:00pm. Volunteers of all ages are wel-come. Please contact me for signup info.

Confirmation: We are about a month away from Confirmation. Please keep our candidates in your prayers.
