St. Martha Church

“He went up on the mountain by himself to pray.”

Back before the Jubilee year 2000, I had the privilege of being part of a weekly men’s group where we

reflected on the coming Sunday’s Gospel. Today’s Gospel was a particular favorite of everyone in the group

because it shows that even Peter, who spent years in the physical presence of Jesus and saw His miracles first-

hand, could falter in his faith. Jesus, of course, can command the wind and the waves, and Peter, when he

keeps his eyes on Christ and has faith, can walk on water. Yet when he’s distracted by the strength of the

wind, he starts sinking and desperately calls to Jesus to save him. Doesn’t that sound like each of us at one

time or another in our lives?

The storm that distracts us from our faith is all the worries of the world: work, kids, school, chores, bills,

sports, activities, technology. We need to remember what we read in the first reading where Elijah heard God

in the whisper. If we don’t remember to quiet the noise of the storm, we will not be able to hear God in the

whisper. But take heart and don’t be too hard on yourself. Remember, even Peter faltered! So, let’s do what

Peter did when he was sinking and call out to Jesus to pull us to safety.

The example that Jesus gave in today’s Gospel was to go off alone to pray. Finding time to be alone to pray

can really help us to hear that whisper. What are some concrete ways to find that quiet prayer time? We can

spend time in nature, go to Mass and Adoration, devote a few quiet minutes in the morning to prayer or Bible

reading, turn off the radio and say a Rosary while driving to work. Even simply taking a few seconds during

the day to thank God for a small blessing, such as a beautiful sunset, a quiet dinner with your spouse, or the

laughter of a child, can be uplifting. If you have children, please don’t forget to be a good prayer example for

them! Let them see you praying. Pray as a family with grace before meals, bedtime prayers, a prayer for a sick

person as an ambulance goes past your house, a decade of the Rosary, the Divine Mercy Chaplet. And don’t

forget to pray for an increase in faith!

In Christ,

Bob and Jen Brogan

Choir Members Needed

The Traditional Choir, Harvest Folk Choir, and Youth Choir are seeking new members to join in the fall of this year.

Traditional Choir sings at the 5 pm Mass on Satur-day evening. We sing some contemporary 3 part choral music along with many of the Latin motets of years ago from the Saint Gregory Hymnal. Practice is on Tuesday’s from 6:30-8:30pm.

Harvest Folk Choir sings many of the well- known contemporary songs along with several of the “Prayer and Praise” gospel spirituals. They sing at the 10:30am Mass every Sunday. Practices are on Friday evenings from 8-9pm.

Youth Choir is in formation. We seek young peo-ple who sing in the school chorus. Our goal is to have a Youth Choir that sings in harmony. They currently sing at the 4pm Mass once or twice a month depending. Practices are on Sunday af-ternoons. We also welcome any young people who play instruments in the school band. Any-one interested in serving our parish community with their ability to sing or play instruments is asked to contact Lou in the music ministry office at 732-295-3630 Ext 34. ST. VINCENT DE PAUL SOCIETY

This lay organization is inspired by Gospel val-ues. Meetings are held at 7:30 on the 2nd & 4th Monday of the month. Attend meetings to see if you might be called to this vocation of helping our neighbors in need. We offer members the opportunity to grow spiritually, cultivate friend-ships and provide person-to-person service to those who call on us for assistance.

“Is prayer your steering wheel or your spare tire?” – Corrie ten Boom

Faith at Home: In today’s Gospel, Jesus “went up on the mountain by himself to pray.” If the Son of God needs to take time to pray, so must we. We make time for so many other things that do not really matter. Make a “mountain time” for your family when you will pray each day. Pray with younger children. Parents and older children should make time for private prayer as well. Go to “Peanut Butter and Grace” (pbgrace.com) for inspiration.

Level 1: We welcome our young parishioners who will begin Level 1 CCD this year! All children entering Level 1 and their parents are invited to attend a gathering at St. Martha’s on Saturday, August 26 at 10am.

CCD 2017-2018: Class assignments have been made and special requests were due by May 31 and can no longer be considered. Classes which are still open are: Sunday Levels 1, 2 and 4; Mon-day all Levels; Tuesday Levels 3 and 5; and Wednesday all Levels.

CCD Schedules for 2017-2018 are available on the parish website. Mark your calendars, and print copies for coaches, teachers, etc. so they know when your child will be unavailable. Re-mind them that faith formation has eternal re-wards.

Spread the Gospel of Jesus! Classroom aides are needed for our CCD classes beginning in Sep-tember. Subs are needed for all levels. We are still in need of one catechist for Level 6 on Sun-days, 9am to 10:15am. Email [email protected] or call 732-295-3630 Ext 35 for more infor-mation.
