Why Palm Branches? Ever see someone roll a long runner for a bride? (We don’t do white runners here as too many brides have tripped on them. Yes, true story and, yes, way too embarrassing a mishap for a wedding day.) So why palm branches? In the ancient world, Kings and war heroes would be welcomed in victory by people waving and laying palm branches. They are part of a triumphant procession. In our day we might think of ticker-tape parades for the victorious championship team - the Vikings next year after we win the Superbowl and end our perennial drought! Ok, Palm Branches are historical and make sense, but why a donkey? Why does Jesus ride in on a donkey? Isn’t that like taking a VW bug to the White House? Why doesn’t Jesus come marching in astride a stallion, a gallant war horse, a majestic mare?

The answer can be found in the scriptures and in King David’s proclamation to the nations that Solomon is to be king. Solomon is the one who established the temple – and in a time of great conflict was appointed, rightly, by his Father as the chosen king – much to the dismay of his enemies. Below is an extended passage from the Old Testament 1st book of Kings. Note how King David signals to the people that Solomon is to be his heir – and how many times the donkey appears. (Then you’ll more fully understand the symbolism of Palm Sunday. Jesus is coming as king – and he is saying in a specifically Jewish way – that His Father has chosen him as king. His anointing is about to take place – and he will take his throne. Sadly, it’s going to be the mounting of the cross. Those “on his left and right when he comes into his kingdom” are not Mary and Joseph, but the thieves. His throne is his cross through which he shows his obedience to the Father, His compassion on the sinner, and His overthrowing of the devil and the realm of death).

King David answered, “Call Bathsheba here.” When she reentered the king’s presence and stood before him, the king swore, “As the Lord lives, who has delivered me from all distress, this very day I will fulfill the oath I swore to you by the Lord, the God of Israel, that your son Solomon should reign after me and should sit upon my throne in my place” . .. Then King David summoned Zadok the priest, Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah, son of Jehoiada. When they had entered the king’s presence, he said to them: “Take with you the royal attendants. Mount my son Solomon upon my own mule and escort him down to Gihon. There Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet, are to anoint him king of Israel, and you shall blow the horn and cry, ‘Long live King Solomon!’ When you come back in his train, he is to go in and sit upon my throne and reign in my place. I designate him ruler of Israel and of Judah….’”

So Zadok the priest, Nathan the prophet, Benaiah, son of Jehoiada, and the Cherethites and Pelethites went down, and mounting Solomon on King David’s mule, escorted him to Gihon. Then Zadok the priest took the horn of oil from the tent and anointed Solomon. They blew the horn and all the people shouted, “Long live King Solomon!” Then all the people went up after him, playing flutes and rejoicing, so much as to split open the earth with their shouting….

“Our Lord King David has made Solomon king . . .and they mounted him upon the king’s own mule. Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet anointed him king at Gihon, and they went up from there rejoicing so that the city is in an uproar. That is the noise you heard. Besides, Solomon took his seat on the royal throne, and the king’s servants went in and paid their respects to our Lord, King David, saying, ‘May God make Solomon more famous than you, and exalt his throne more than your own! And the king in his bed worshiped God.” -1Kings 1:28 – 48.

Sound familiar? Sound like Palm Sunday? Jesus comes as the son of David, to establish his kingdom.
