From the C.E.O.Welcome to the first edition of “The Workies “ magazine for 2014. 2014 is set to be a big year for Toronto Workers Club with the commencement of sales and construction for our independent living units, as well as major refurbishments to our restaurant and bar area over the first half of this year.

I look forward to sharing our changes and this exciting journey with you all.

As we move forward into the year, we have a great range of quality entertainment offers for our member’s. Join us for a bit of comedy with either Rod Gregory as “The Old Fella” or the every popular David Strassman, or perhaps if

you are a lover of country music John Williamson will be at the club in April as part of his “Hell of a Career Tour”.

Easter has come quickly as always and we have a wide range of Easter activities for you and your family over this period.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank those who came out and took advantage of our Members Appreciation Day in January. On this day the club offered all members $10 to spend on purchases at the club. The $10 was automatically loaded onto member’s membership cards and was available to be spent on food, beverage, raffle tickets, concert tickets are more. We look forward to having more of these day’s throughout the year, so look out for more information when our next Members Appreciation Day will be.

The Old FellaScared stiff of retirement, in May 2010, he enrolled in a ten week comedy course to help him learn to create a caricature, wishing to write amusing short stories of his farming days. On completion of the course his tutor offered him a weekly spot in his Comedy Theatre. From this start he gained enough confidence to have his own show in the 2011 Adelaide Fringe. You have to believe in fate, as how can one man’s life change from farming to appearing on Channel 7’s 2011 “Australia’s Got Talent”. Rod decided to attend the auditioning for Australia’s Got Talent hoping for just 2 minutes on National Television, to gain some profile as a comedian, hoping he could attract a larger audience to his comedy shows. Rod had said due to his age - 67 years old at the time, he “did not have the luxury of time on his side”. Quite to his amazement and pleasure, he achieved 4th placing in the Grand Final.Time: Doors Open 7.45pm. Show commences 8.30pmPrice: Members $25. Non-Members $30. Reserved Seating Only

Ladies Night: The Sydney HotshotsBack by popular demand, the Sydney Hotshots return to Toronto Workers Club! Get the girls together for the ultimate girls night out. Perfect for hens nights, birthdays or just a great excuse to have fun, the Sydney Hotshots specialise in making your night unforgettable. The audience will enjoy a spectacular range of entertainment during the 2 hour show including a variety of games and competitions. Lucky ladies are invited on stage for the chance to win some fantastic prizes andfor some up close personal attention for the Hotshots.Time: Doors open 8pm. Show commences 8.30pmPrice: Members $28. Non-Members $30. Reserved Seating Only

David StrassmanDavid Strassman. He’s the dark-edged, avant-garde artist who lifted ventriloquism into the 21st century, acquiring a multitude of fans and critical acclaim along the way. Led by the evil Chuck Wood and delightfully cute Ted E Bare, Strassman’s “renegade band of puppets” (as The Scotsman called them) create a multi-layered stage performance. Audiences forget that its actually a one-man show! As a concert act, Strassman is one of the top 5 comics touring Australia, filling theatres nationwide for weeks at a time. As with Tim Minchin and Ross Noble, he combines a unique perspective with jaw-achingly funny material. And he’s not only popular in Australia. Strassman’s radically original theatrical productions have played London’s West End, New York’s Off Broadway and the Edinburgh Fringe. Yet he’s most proud that he gets as many laughs in a club in Kalgoorlie or Broken Hill – without all the tech wizardry – as he does in LA or New York.Time: Doors Open 6.15pm. Show Commences 7.00pmPrice: $49.00. Reserved Seating Only

John WilliamsonJohn Williamson is, without question, an Australian icon. His voice and sound is as recognisable and important to Australia as the Southern Cross is to the flag. He’s performed at some of Australia’s most historic and nation-stopping events, and to battlers across this vast country. His songs and music are simply for everyone.Time: Doors Open 7.15pm. Show Commences 8pmPrice: Members $44. Non-Members $49. Reserved Seating Only

You don’t have to imagine anymore…..You have heard a lot about our proposed over 55’s independent living development. Many have registered their interest and have patiently awaited the next phase. At last the wait is over and exciting times are upon us in 2014.

The Toronto Workers Community is about to witness the commencement of the highly anticipated and exciting project. There has been nothing like this proposed redevelopment for our Club. The stunning lifestyle opportunity will position TWC as the premier place to live, visit and enjoy. Our development is a highly desirable, fully secure, lifestyle and accommodation development of which Club members will be proud. A lucky few will have the opportunity to own a piece of this unique community. The wider community who visit the Club will have the opportunity to be a part of the very best Toronto has to offer.

Soon you will notice the construction inside the club of a display and sales suite for the project. Once it is complete, you will see some familiar faces there. The display suite will be open to provide you with a valuable opportunity to observe what the independent living units will offer. For those interested in purchasing a new home within the development you will be welcome to meet with our trusted consultants who will clearly explain the process and start you on your new lifestyle journey.

The anticipation and excitement has been building and the initial response towards the project is extremely positive. Over the coming months, our sales coordinator will be contacting those who have already expressed their interest. You will be invited to make an appointment to meet with one of our sales consultants. They will work with you to plan and ensure your needs are met for a smooth transition into your new home where you will enjoy your magnificent facilities and services. Do not be alarmed if you have not yet registered you can do so online at www.torontoworkers.com.au.

The production of an impressive virtual model has commenced. This will clearly display the seniors’ living development and the master plan for the entire site. The model will be erected near the display suite and is sure to be a great attraction and talking point for members and guests. Make sure to spend some time viewing the model once it is in place.

We are confident you will all embrace this new phase of development at the Club and that you will share the excitement as the signs go up, the display suite is unveiled and our new residents begin to see their new lifestyle emerge. If you are considering the move, be sure to jump in early as these homes offer superior designs and finishes and indications are that they will be very popular.

Supporting Our CommunityToronto Workers Club would like to thank our local businesses for their sponsorship of Miss Surfest 2014...

Supporting Our CommunityMiss Surfest at Toronto Workers ClubBack in January, for the second year, Toronto Workers Club was proud to host two heats and a final in the search for Miss Surfest 2014.

The very popular Miss Surfest competition is run in conjunction with Surfest – the annual acclaimed surfing festival held in Newcastle each year. The competition seeks to find a young lady who will become the face of the event and who will also represent Australia at an international level modelling and pageantry. The lucky winner from the Toronto Workers Club final was Sydney’s Tersha Rich.

The club would also like to thank the following local businesses who supported the event through valued sponsorship and also had the important job of judging.

• Fashion Eight Fascinators

• Renee Schofield Personal Training

• Mary Kay/Mel Livermore Beauty Comes to You

• Creating Waves Hair Salon

• Booty Worx Pole Dancing Studio

• Robert Oatley Vineyards

• Tooheys Extra Dry

A huge thanks also goes out to our event photographers Primval Edge Photography, Dr J Photography and Brenda Ashley.

2013 Toronto Workers Club Kids Christmas PicnicOur annual Kids Christmas Picnic, held late last year on Saturday 7th December was another huge success with some 1,000 community members attending.

From 2013 onwards, the club will be donating the entire proceeds from tickets sales of the annual Kids Christmas Picnic to worthy charities in the area. 2013’s recipient was the Kaleidoscope Foundation of the John Hunter Children’s Hospital.

Established in 2002, Kaleidoscope acts as an umbrella organization that integrates a range of health care services designed to meet the ever-changing health needs of babies, children, young people and their families. Extending from John Hunter Children’s Hospital , the single network brings together the vast range of hospital and community-based services in the Lake Macquarie, Upper and Lower Hunter, Port Stephens, Lower Mid North Coast and Greater Newcastle regions. Toronto Workers Club is proud to support this amazing service which brings much joy to sick babies, children and adolescents around our area whilst they are in hospital.

Over $4,000 was raised from ticket sales and donations from the Kids Christmas Picnic, some of which was used to purchase new gaming consoles and games for the John Hunter Children’s Hospital new adolescent ward refurbishments.

The club also ran a raffle on the day in support of another worthy local charity – Hunter Life Education, and raised over $300. We were also delighted to receive a visit from Healthy Harold on the day.

The club also hosted our annual Gift of Christmas tree in the club’s foyer, encouraging members and guests to donate toys and gifts for the John Hunter Children’s Hospital. We had another overwhelming response in 2013 thanks to our generous members.

In 2014, Toronto Workers Club will be inviting applications from other local charities and not for profit community groups to fundraise on behalf at our annual Kids Christmas Picnic as part of the Club’s Community Connect initiative.

An application form is now available on www.torontoworkers.com.au. If you support, know of, or belong to a local charity whom you feel would benefit please submit an application form online.
