22 The Citadel

The Citadel President Lt. Gen. John W. Rosa was born in Springfi eld, Ill., Sept. 28, 1951. After graduating high school in Jacksonville, Fla., in 1969, he was recruited to play football at The Citadel, the Military College of South Carolina. While at The Citadel, Rosa was the starting Bulldog quarterback in 1970 and went on to earn three varsity letters in football. He graduated from The Citadel in 1973 with a degree in business administration and was awarded a commission in the Air Force. A command fi ghter pilot with more than 3,600 fl ying hours, Rosa enjoyed an illustrious 32-year career in the Air Force. Among his career highlights, he was stationed in Lossiemouth, Scotland, as an American exchange offi cer fl ying the Jaguar for the Royal Air Force. He has com-manded at squadron, group and wing levels at air bases in South Korea, Idaho, South Carolina, New Mexico and Georgia. He served as inspector general for Pacifi c Air Forces at Hickam Air Force Base in Hawaii and commandant of The Air Command and Staff College at Maxwell Air Force Base in Alabama. As deputy director for operations for the Joint Chiefs of Staff in Washington, D.C., he was in charge of the National Military Com-mand Center and served as the military spokesman for the Pentagon when U.S. troops were deployed to Afghanistan and Iraq in 2002. In July 2003, he was named superintendent of the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo., and in September of that year, he was promoted to lieuten-ant general. Rosa holds a master’s degree in public administration from Gold-en Gate University. He is a graduate of the Air Force Command and Staff College, the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College, and the U.S. Army War College. He has also studied at the John F. Kennedy School of Government and the Harvard Graduate School of Education. His awards include the Distinguished Service Medal, the Defense Superior Service Medal, the Legion of Merit with oak leaf cluster, the Meri-torious Service Medal with four oak leaf clusters, the Air Force Commen-dation Medal and the Combat Readiness Medal with two oak leaf clusters. He has fl own the A-7, A-10, Hunter and Jaguar aircraft, F-16, F-117A, HH-60G and HC-130. On Jan. 3, 2006, Rosa returned to The Citadel where he serves as 19th president. He is married to Donna Kangeter, a Charleston native. They have two sons, Jonathan and Brad (‘03), and a grandson, Michael Bradley, who is the son of Jonathan and his wife, Elisha.

At a school where leadership is taught and duty is part of the cur-riculum, The Citadel has the right person to lead its Department of Athletics in Les Robinson. A virtual Who’s Who in intercollegiate athletics and one of the region’s most sought-after speakers, Robinson begins his seventh year as the Bulldogs’ Director of Athletics. Possessing more than four decades of college athletic experience to his credit, Robinson, who also served as athletics director and basketball coach at North Carolina State and East Tennessee State, is only the fi fth athletics director in Citadel history. He served as the Bulldogs’ basketball coach from 1974-85, having spent the fi ve previous seasons as an assistant coach. In his fi rst four years leading The Citadel’s athletics program, Robinson’s skills as a proven fund-raiser have already benefi ted The Citadel Brigadier Foundation. During the past four years, the school witnessed the opening of the Altman Athletic Center at Johnson Hagood Stadium and the addition to McAlister Field House for women’s athletics. The Citadel, under Robinson’s guidance, has hosted the South-ern Conference cross-country championships, the fi rst two rounds of the women’s basketball championships, the men’s and women’s tennis cham-pionships and the baseball tournament. A 1965 graduate of N.C. State, Robinson served fi ve years as a Bulldog assistant coach under Dick Campbell and George Hill, and eventu-ally spent 11 seasons as The Citadel’s head basketball coach from 1974-85. He directed the 1978-79 and 1984-85 teams to 20 and 18 victories, respec-tively. Robinson was named the Southern Conference Coach-of-the-Year in 1979 and was tabbed South Carolina’s Coach-of-the-Year in 1979 and 1985. Following his tenure at The Citadel, Robinson became the head basketball coach at East Tennessee State, where he coached the Buccaneers for fi ve years increasing their win total (7-14-20-27) each year. The West Virginia native remains the only coach in Southern Con-ference men’s basketball history to earn league coach-of-the-year honors at two different schools, and he ranks fi fth on the conference’s list of basketball wins. Robinson is in his seventh year serving on the prestigious NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Committee, one of the NCAA’s most infl uential committees. The Committee is responsible for site selection for each round of the NCAA Division I men’s basketball championships. Robinson earned a Bachelor of Science degree in education and recreation from N.C. State in 1965 and added a master’s degree in education and guidance from Western Carolina in 1969. Robinson is married to the former Barbara Simon of St. Albans, WV. The Robinsons, who have maintained a home on Sullivan’s Island since coaching at The Citadel, have four children and eight grandchildren.

brought about due to the desire of many of those schools to schedule a greater num-ber of regular season basketball games against their local rivals. Today, the league continues to thrive with a membership that spans four Southeastern states. Current league members are Appalachian State, College of Charleston, The Citadel, Davidson, Elon, Furman, Georgia Southern, UNC Greens-boro, Chattanooga, Western Carolina and Wofford. The most recent addition, Elon University, joined the Southern Conference on July 1, 2003. The Phoenix replaced Virginia Military Institute which left the conference on June 30, 2003. East Ten-nessee State, which joined the SoCon in 1978, left the conference following the conclusion of the 2004-05 academic year.

CHAMPIONSHIPS HISTORYThe fi rst Southern Conference Championship was the league basketball tournament held in Atlanta in 1922. The North Carolina Tar Heels won the tournament to be-come the fi rst recognized league champion in any sport. The Southern Conference Tournament remains the oldest of its kind in college basketball. In May of 1923, the league held its fi rst outdoor track and fi eld champion-ship in Montgomery, Ala. Mississippi A&M (now Mississippi State) captured six individual titles on its way to winning the team championship. Two other sports - cross country and tennis - held their fi rst championships during the 1920s. North

Carolina won the initial cross country team championship in 1926 in Athens, Ga. Tennis crowned its fi rst singles and doubles champi-

ons in New Orleans, La. in 1928. Donald Cram of Vanderbilt was the league’s fi rst singles champion, while Leonard Chamberlin and Maurie Bayon of Tulane won the doubles title. The 1930s saw four more sports - wrestling, indoor track and fi eld, swim-

ming and golf - celebrate their fi rst conference championships. VMI played host to and won the fi rst league wrestling team championship in 1930. Washington & Lee won the fi rst in-door track team championship, which also took place in 1930 and was held at Chapel Hill, N.C. The University of Virginia hosted and won the fi rst league swimming championship in 1933, while Duke captured the fi rst confer-ence golf team title at Sedgefi eld Country Club in Greensboro, N.C., later that same year.

Baseball was introduced as a Southern Confer-ence sport in 1947 as Clemson captured the league cham-

pionship that year. Rifl e held its fi rst conference champion-ship in 1956, while soccer was the most recently added men’s

sport in 1967. The Southern Conference began sponsoring women’s sports during the

1983-84 season. That year, volleyball, basketball and tennis championships were held in the league. Cross country joined the mix in 1985 and the league began hold-ing indoor and outdoor track championships in 1988. Most recently, the conference instituted golf and softball championships in the spring of 1994 and added soccer in the fall of 1994. The Southern Conference currently declares champions in 10 men’s sports - football, soccer, cross country, basketball, indoor track and fi eld, outdoor track and fi eld, wrestling, baseball, tennis and golf - and nine women’s sports - soccer, volleyball, cross country, basketball, indoor track and fi eld, outdoor track and fi eld, tennis, golf and softball. Women’s sports are relatively young in the league’s history. In 1992-93, the Southern Conference celebrated its 10th Anniversary of women’s athletics. Furman golfer Dottie Pepper was named the Southern Conference Women’s Athlete-of-the-Decade in conjunction with that event. Appalachian State’s Mary Jayne Harrel-son won the NCAA Outdoor title at 1500 meters in 1999 and 2001. SOUTHERN CONFERENCE The Southern Conference, which enters its 86th season of intercollegiate competition in 2006, has become known as one of the nation’s leaders in emphasiz-ing the development of the student-athlete and defi ning the league’s role in helping to build lifelong leaders and role models. The Southern Conference has excelled as the premier Division I-AA foot-ball conference since earning that classifi cation in 1981. The Conference currently consists of 11 members in four states throughout the Southeast and sponsors 19 varsity sports and championships that produce participants for NCAA Division I Championships. The Southern Conference is the nation’s fi fth-oldest NCAA Division I col-legiate athletic association. Only the Big Ten (1896), the Missouri Valley (1907), the Pacifi c 10 (1915) and the Southwestern Athletic (1920) conferences are older in terms of origination. Throughout its history, the Southern Conference has been an innovator in college athletics. The Southern Conference was the fi rst “super conference” with its charter membership including the likes of Alabama, Auburn, and North Carolina. The SoCon, as it has come to be known by headline writers throughout the country, is the league that gave birth to the three-point shot in college basketball and was the college home of such sporting greats as Arnold Palmer, Jerry West and Charlie “Choo Choo” Justice. Academic excellence has been a major part of the Southern Con-ference’s tradition. League athletes have been recognized countless times on CoSIDA Academic All-America and district teams, highlighted this year by College of Charleston base-ball player Phillip Coker, who was named Aca-demic All-American of the Year. A total of 19 Rhodes-Scholarship winners have been selected from the conference. The Southern Conference offi ce is locat-ed in the Beaumont Mill in Spartanburg, S.C. A textile mill that was in operation from 1880 until 1999, the Beaumont Mill was renovated in 2004 and today offers the SoCon a fi rst class meeting area as well as a spacious library for storage of the conference’s historical documents.

MEMBERSHIP HISTORY The Southern Conference was formed on Feb. 25, 1921 at a meeting in Atlanta, Ga. Fourteen institutions from the 30-member Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association (SIAA) reorganized as the Southern Conference. Those charter members included Alabama, Au-burn, Clemson, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Kentucky, Maryland, Mississippi State, North Carolina, North Carolina State, Tennessee, Virginia, Virginia Tech and Washington & Lee. Athletic competition began in the fall of 1921. In 1922, six more schools - Florida, Louisiana State, Mississippi, South Carolina, Tulane and Vanderbilt - joined the fold. A year later, the University of the South joined the ranks. Virginia Military Institute became a member in 1925 and Duke University came into the fold in 1929. Since then, conference membership has experienced a series of membership changes with 42 institutions having been affi liated with the league. The league has undergone two major transitions during its history. The fi rst occurred in December 1932 when the Southeastern Conference was formed out of the 23-school Southern Conference. The league’s 13 members west and south of the Appalachian Mountains reorganized to help reduce the ex-tensive travel demands that were present in the league at the time. In 1936, the Southern Conference invited The Citadel, William & Mary, Davidson, Furman, Richmond and Wake Forest to join the membership. The second major shift happened in 1953 when Clemson, Duke, Maryland, North Carolina, North Carolina State, South Carolina and Wake Forest offi cially withdrew from the league to form the Atlantic Coast Conference. The Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina, is a unique public institution with the mission of educating principled lead-ers through its Corps of Cadets and Col-lege of Graduate and Professional Studies program.

Located in historic Charleston, S.C., The Citadel offers undergraduate and gradu-ate degrees in the humanities, business, math, science, engineering and education. The Citadel’s reputation for academic ex-cellence is reinforced by annual rankings from U.S. News & World Report that place The Citadel as number two in public col-leges granting master’s degrees in the South. The engineering school is nation-ally ranked at number 27.

With an enrollment of more than 1,900, the Corps of Cadets is the nation’s largest military college program outside the ser-vice academies. All cadets are educated within a classic military system and about 40 percent of the graduating seniors earn military commissions. The remaining graduates attend graduate school or enter the job market.

The College of Graduate and Professional Studies, which is noted for Citadel excel-lence in a civilian environment, serves about 1,200 residents of South Carolina’s Lowcountry.

Academic programs at the collge are com-plimented by a strong commitment to ser-vice and emphatic support of an honor code that calls upon a cadet not to lie, cheat or steal or tolerate those who do. Since its founding in 1842, The Citadel’s emphasis on character, as well as intel-lect, has produced generations of gradu-ates who have served their nation, their professions and their communities with distinction.

THE CITADELThe Citadel is a state-supported comprehensive military college. Males and females are admitted to the under-graduate residential Corps of Cadets. In addition to the day program, undergraduate and graduate programs are offered through the College of Graduate Studies (CGPS) in the evening.

The South Carolina Commission on Higher Education recognizes The Citadel as the only specialized four-year college in the state. The Citadel, founded in 1842, is a co-educational military college with a rich and storied history. Located in Charleston, S.C., the institution offers a classic military education for young men and women who seek a college experience that is intense, meaning-ful and academically strong. Most Citadel graduates say that the disciplined lifestyle and friendships they forged here have a profoundly positive effect on their lives.

Corps of Cadets ...All students at The Citadel are cadets in the South Carolina Corps of Cadets, which num-bers approximately 1,900 and represents nearly every state, as well as more than 20 coun-tries. While only about a third of the graduates each year go into the armed services, all cadets participate in an ROTC program. On most days, cadets have physical fi tness training and military instruction in addition to their regular college classes.

Weekdays end with a formation and required evening study period.

Because The Citadel emphasizes corps unity, cadets can-not be married and all must live on campus in the barracks with their assigned company. Despite the challenges, ca-dets value their fi rst year for the lessons in teamwork, self-discipline and time management. The disciplined lifestyle that begins in the knob year binds cadets into a lifelong, close-knit camaraderie that is one of the strongest forces in their lives after graduation.

The buldings around the parade ground include 10 classroom buildings, an administrative building, four barracks, a stu-dent activities building, infi rmary, chapel, stadium, a fi eld house, and library. Just off the main campus are the football stadium, baseball stadium and alumni center.

With an av-erage of 75 percent of its students returning each year, The Citadel enjoys one of the best retention records in the country. The Citadel’s 14 academic departments offer fi ve bachelor’s degrees in 17 areas, six master’s degrees in 17 areas and specialist degrees in two areas.

College ofGraduate & Professional Studies...The Citadel’s evening college serves the Lowcountry by offering nationally accredited bachelor’s , master’s and specialist degrees scheduled around the student’s profession, family and lifestyle. It is the well-known Cita-del academic excellence in a civilian environ-ment. The CGPS offers 20 graduate programs with concentrations in education, psychology, computer science and business. The Master of Business Administration program is the only nationally accredited MBA program in the Low-country region of South Carolina. Enrollment is up 12 percent from fall semester 2000. The CGPS also offers three undergraduate evening programs in business and engineering. The Citadel is the only college in South Carolina that offers an undergraduate civil and electri-cal engineering degree in the evening.

Alumni...Generations of Citadel graduates have served their nation, their state and their community with distinction. The Citadel graduates men and women with alert minds and sound bodies, who value honor, integrity, loyalty and patrio-tism, and who accept the responsibilities that accompany leadership.
