2013 SEASON OUTLOOK WITH HEAD COACH DANIELLE STEINBERG

Talk about how it feels to be in your first season as head coach here at McNeese State

I feel very fortunate for this amazing opportunity to build and lead the McNeese Tennis team. We have a great athletic department, filled with young and ambitious personal, and as a young coach, this motivates and pushes me to work even harder; I am very proud to be a part of McNeese State.

We constantly feel the support from our community as everyone is excited and eager to see us do well. The support the community has for the tennis team is very unique and does not exist in many programs in the country. It did not take long for me to fall in love with the Lake Charles community.

What are the team goals this season?

The team is going through a rebuilding process, which is a marathon and not a sprint. Our first and main goal for this year was and is to change the standards and culture of the program. We wanted to instill a culture of hard work, heart, and fight at all times while elevating all standards in practice, competition, and recruiting.

The team embraced the new standards and we are definitely heading in the right direction. Having said that, we are still competitive and we still want to win tennis matches. Qualifying for the Southland Conference tournament is definitely one of our tangible goals for the year.

What are the team’s strength and some things you would like to improve on this year?

I think one of our strengths would be that we have a “chip on our shoulder” and are hungry for success. We worked so hard this past fall to improve on every aspect of our game and the girls are going to want to prove something, either to me, their competition, or mostly to themselves. They know they are worth more than they showed last year and they will be hungry to prove it.

One of the things I value the most and try to infuse in all my players is the “never say die” attitude. They know I expect them to fight for every ball and every point and walk around with their head held high. This is something we always want to improve on and one of the things I am looking for to see this coming spring season

What is the team’s approach to the 2013 season?

Work hard, put your heart into it, and fight for every ball and every point.

I want them to be proud of their team, of what they represent, of McNeese. I always tell the girls, if you went out there and gave everything you have that day, but really everything you have, then that’s all I can ask for. If the other player played better that day, good for her; but they will get off the court knowing they left everything on it.

COACHING STAFF

Danielle Steinberg begins her head coaching career after being named as the seventh head coach for McNeese State women’s tennis.

Steinberg comes to McNeese with impressive accolades that will help the Cowgirl tennis program rise to new levels. Steinberg’s knowledge of player development and recruiting is what drives her to be better in every aspect of the game. She believes in complete dedication which translates into spending a lot of time on the court with each student-athlete.

Prior to coming to McNeese, Steinberg served as an assistant head coach for Wichita State from 2010-2012. In her first year, Steinberg was met with the challenge of working with six freshmen. With four of the freshmen in their strong starting lineup, the Shockers dominated the Missouri Valley Conference going undefeated in regular season and conference tournament play in 2011 and 2012 and advancing to the NCAA tournament both years. She also coached 11 Missouri Valley Conference individual champions while with the Shockers.

While at Wichita State, Steinberg gained recognition by her peers when she received the opportunity to coach Romina Oprandi in the WTA tour. With Steinberg’s coaching, Oprandi advanced to the third round of the Australian Open after kniocking off a Top-10 WTA player. Steinberg also played a vital role in improving Oprandi’s #88 world ranking to #61.

Before assuming her position at Wichita State, Steinberg began her

coaching career at the University of Arizona, her alma mater. She served as a student-assistant where she held plan and conducted practice and conditioning sessions as well as assisted with administrative duties such as recruiting and team travel.

As a player, Steinberg was a standout at the University of Arizona

where she was the teams No. 1 player and team captain throughout her career. She was a three-time Pac-10 All-Conference pick and was the Pac-10 Toyota Spring Scholar-Athlete of the Year in 2009. Steinberg was also named to the 2006 Academic All-American team and is a three time Pac-10 All-Academic selection. Steinberg also won the ITA Arthur Ashe Award for Sportsmanship and Leadership in 2009.

A native of Tel Aviv, Israel, Steinberg graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of Arizona with a BA in Social and Behavioral Science and a GPA of 3.9. She also received a MEd in Sport Management from Wichita State with a GPA of 3.9 in May 2012.

The McNeese women’s tennis team plays all its matches at the Nancy Hank Tennis Center. The complex consists of eight all-weather courts, which were resurfaced in the summer of 2012, and are located just north of the Student Recreation Center on the main campus. The complex is run in conjunction with the Student Recreation Center at McNeese. Four of the courts are lighted for play at night. Prior to the 2012 season, canopies were installed over bleachers that are between both sets of courts.

The complex was renamed the Nancy Hank Tennis center on June 14, 2010 in memory of the late Nancy Hank who was an avid tennis player and fan who took up the game in the early 1970’s. She was born in Galesville, WI and attended college at the University of Dubuque in Iowa. She was married to Harry Hank for 35 years and spent most of her adult life in Lake Charles.

The center is a great venue that is used for a variety of local, regional, and state-wide tournaments and clinics. The tennis complex and McNeese hosted the 2004 Southland Conference tennis tournament, in which the Cowgirls advanced to the championship match for the first time in school history.

In 2007, the Cowgirls hosted Lamar in the highest attended match in school history.

The center is open to the public at night.

Prior to being named Athletics Director, McClelland served at Interim Athletics Director and Assistant Athletics Director of Internal Affairs. In his short time at McNeese, McClelland has been quick out of the gate. He started the “Partner with the Pokes” program that provides a smaller, more attractive sponsorship package for local small businesses. On top of the “Partner with the Pokes” program, McClelland has raised over $2.8 million in private donations since April of 2007

and was instrumental in increasing corporate sponsorships over $750,000, while securing new clients and multi-year sponsorships. He also planned and helped implement a multi-city summer tour, the “Cowboy Round-Up Tour”. The Cowboy Round-Up Tour is a two week period in June where coaches, administrators and other department staff travel to various cities in Southwest Louisiana and Southeast Texas. Fans have the opportunity to meet the coaches and administrators to talk about Cowboy and Cowgirl Athletics. McClelland was also responsible for increasing football season ticket sales in 2008 for the then highest total in school history to 8,008 and then topped that at 8,035 in 2009. In addition, he was instrumental in setting single game attendance records in volleyball, softball, soccer and women’s basketball. McClelland is not just limited to selling tickets. He devised a plan to resurrect the “M” Club for former student-athletes. He negotiated a new syndicated radio network for football, men’s and women’s basketball and

dedicated to broadcasting women’s basketball. McClelland also re-negotiated football’s TV replay contract from a one station deal to broadcasting games on three different stations and the internet. One of the main goals for McClelland was to improve the life of the student-athletes and increase the fans experience. The most effective way to accomplish both goals in to improve athletic facilities. In his short time as Athletics Director, McClelland has overseen the completion of:

•- New bleachers in Memorial Gym

•- Chair backed center section of Cowgirl Diamond

•- Canopy over the stairwell in the North end of Cowboy Stadium

•- Hodges Street Fieldhouse

•- New grandstands at Cowboy Diamond

•- New bleachers at Cowgirl Soccer Field

•- New basketball court and goals

•- Upgraded football practice facilities

•- Covered center section at Cowgirl Diamond

•- New lights for Cowgirls Soccer Field

including a new state of the art theater style media room

•- Renovation and expansion of the Jack V. Doland Fieldhouse

A combined total of over $11 million in facility renovation and new construction has been made since 2007. During his tenure as Athletics Director, McNeese has won the Southland Conference football championship (2007, 2009), Southland Conference soccer Tournament (2006) and regular season championship (2007), Southland Conference Softball Tournament (2010), the Southland Conference Men’s basketball regular season (2011) and the Southland Conference Women’s basketball regular season (2011) and the State Farm Southland Conference Women’s Basketball Tournament Championship (2011, 2012). In 2011,

postseason tourament as they hosted ACC member Boston College on ESPNU. McClelland holds a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree from Northwestern State where he was a football and track standout. The native of Basile, LA., served as a graduate assistant at Northwestern State in athletics and

assisting with championship events. McClelland is also a 2012 graduate of the Executive Program of the Sports Management Institute and attended instruction at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s Kenan-Flagler Business School and the University of Southern California’s Marshall School of Business. McClelland is married to the former Jessica Stokes of Garrison, Texas. They have two sons, Lawson and Grayson. They reside in Lake Charles.
