Upon arriving on the Lewis University campus in January of 2007, Bre Bridel was charged with the duty of turning both the Flyer men’s and women’s tennis programs around.

Now in his fourth full season as Lewis’ head coach, Bridel has both programs trending up-wards in just a short period of me.

The 2010 season for the Lewis men’s tennis team was a memorable one for Bridel’s troops, as the Flyers advanced to the NCAA Na onal Tournament for the fi rst me in school history. Leading the charge for the Flyers was redshirt sophomore Uno Lapimaa. In just his second season, Lapimaa was named the Great Lakes Valley Conference Player of the Year.

Entering the 2011 campaign, Lapimaa is ranked No. 1 in the ITA Midwest Region Preseason Poll and 34th in the na on. His teammates Tonis Irdoja and Lorenz Pes nger each earned regional accolades as they are the No. 4 doubles team in the Midwest.

On the women’s side, Bridel brought in a pair of freshmen from Hungary in Zsofi a Kranczicki and Zsofi a Lans ak for the 2010-11 campaign. Kranczicki impressed during the Fall campaign, as she advanced all the way to the ITA Midwest Regional Singles Championship. For her ef-forts, Kranczicki is ranked second in the Midwest Region and 36th na onally in singles ac on.

Lans ak advanced to the semifi nals of the ITA Midwest Region singles tournament, but was forced to withdraw due to an injury. She is ranked right behind Kranczicki at No. 3 and is 43rd na onally.

Before arriving at Lewis, Bridel spent the 2004-05 season as head women’s tennis coach at Southern Illinois University Carbondale, leading a Salukis team that earned Intercollegiate Tennis Associa on (ITA) All-Academic recogni on.

Prior to his season at SIUC, Bridel enjoyed considerable success during two years as head men’s and women’s tennis coach at College of DuPage. The men’s team captured back-to-back NJCAA Division III na onal tles and was undefeated both seasons, while the women’s team garnered a na onal runner-up fi nish in 2004 in its second successive NJCAA tournament appearance. Bridel was named NJCAA men’s Region IV and Na onal Coach of the Year both seasons.

DuPage players collected 18 NJCAA All-America fi rst-team awards (14 men, four women) and three men’s All-America second-team honors under Bridel’s guidance. Addi onally, both squads achieved ITA All-Academic status and 12 players earned a place on COD’s Academic Excellence List.

Bridel’s coaching and teaching experience also includes a year as a graduate assistant women’s coach at the University of Alabama; three years as a volunteer assistant women’s coach at Florida State Univer-sity; 16 years as proprietor of the Aces Summer Tennis Camp in Glen Ellyn; and a staff professional at the Naperville Racquet Club and the Glenbrook Racquet Club.

Bridel is a 1999 graduate of the University of Alabama, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in educa on. He and wife Lori are the parents of 7-year-old Britney Kajsa, 6-year-old Breton Kris an and 2-year-old Brianna Kirsten.

Former Northern Iowa standout Taynara Moraes enters her fi rst season as an assis-tant coach for the Lewis University men’s and women’s tennis teams.

Moraes, who graduated from UNI in May of 2010, has served as a tennis instructor at the Downers Grove Swimming and Racquet Club for the past fi ve years. While there, she ran the men’s, women’s and youth summer tennis programs.

The Santos, Brazil na ve was a four-year le erwinner for the Panthers from 2006-09 and compiled a career singles record of 63-47 and doubles mark of 61-44. In 2007, she and partner Meghana Paritala captured the Missouri Valley Conference Doubles Championship. A er Moraes exhausted her eligibility, she served as a student-assis-tant coach for Northern Iowa in 2010.

Moraes is currently pursuing her masters degree in business.

The men’s and women’s tennis teams play all home matches at the Jack Oremus Tennis Complex located on the west end of campus.


2011 Women’s Tennis Season Outlook The 2011 Lewis University women’s tennis team can look to the top of the lineup this season at two true freshmen to improve on last season’s 5th place fi nish in the GLVC East Division.

The Flyers squad is comprised of four le er winners and three freshman. This well-balanced group heads into the 2011 campaign looking to turn things around from last season’s 8-8 mark and 2-4 record in GLVC ac on.

The standout rookies, Zsofi a Kranczicki and Zsofi a Lans ak are currently ranked No. 2 and No. 3 in the Midwest Region and No. 36 and No. 43 in the na onal rankings, re-spec vely. The Hungarian na ves will need to set the tone for the Flyers this spring.

Kranczicki went 11-2 overall in singles play during the fall and 5-3 in doubles play when teamed up with Lans ak. Lans ak fi nished 5-1 in singles play a er ba ling a wrist injury most of the fall season.

“I am really excited to have the Zsofi a’s here,” Bridel said. “They bring a new level of play and work ethic to the program.

“They will con nue to improve and become be er tennis players and they are not at all sa sfi ed with the status quo.”

The Flyers return four le er winners in Ka e Hargrove, Bayley Brown, Jody Wagner, and Clare Kessler. These four ladies went 39-38 overall in dual matches and posted a 17-15 mark in GLVC Conference play. They will need to step up and be leaders for the squad.

“We have an experienced group returning for the ladies and that will help them (as indi-viduals) and the team this spring,” Bridel said.

The three freshman make up the remaining half of the roster, but they all have quality experience coming in. Freshman Kendra Mills adds much needed depth to the squad.

“I love this group and how they have come together as a team,” Bridel said. “Last year everyone was playing a spot too high in the lineup, but this group is more balanced from the top to the bo om.”

“I am very excited for this season and I expect us to be over-achievers both in the class-room and on the tennis court.”

in the `C’ Flight doubles draw of the Upper Iowa Invita onal.

2007-08 Highlights: Was 5-11 in singles ac on, primarily at No. 4, and 2-14 in doubles play, primarily at No. 3...earned four GLVC wins in singles play, including victories over Missouri-St. Louis’ Molly Striler (6-0, 6-4), Quincy’s Sarah Harris (6-1, 6-0) and Kentucky Wesleyan’s Heather Allgood (6-4, 6-2)...teamed up with Jordan Lynde for the 8-2 triumph over Kentucky Wesleyan’s Amanda Nichols and Allgood on April 4th.

2008-09 Highlights: Completed her rookie campaign with a mark of 11-12 in singles ac on, primarily at No. 4, and 14-10 in doubles play...teamed with Ka e Hargrove, primarily at No. 2 doubles, and compiled a record of 11-5, including an undefeated mark of 3-0 in GLVC ac on...she and Hargrove won the fi rst seven doubles matches of their career...won eight out her fi rst 10 singles matches to begin her Flyer career.

2011 Men’s Tennis Season Outlook One word can describe the Lewis University men’s tennis teams over the past few seasons: Improvement.

Since 2008, the Flyers have made the jump from 11th place in the Great Lakes Valley Confer-ence all the way to a fourth-place fi nish in the 2010 GLVC Tournament and Lewis’ fi rst-ever berth in the NCAA Na onal Tournament. In 2008-09, Lewis won four dual matches and in-creased that total to 16 last year.

While the progression of the program has been obvious, Lewis head men’s tennis coach Bre Bridel believes his team can make an even bigger jump by strengthening their mental prepara- on.

“I want our players to control what they can control in a match – their eff ort on every point, their decision making and execu on and to do those things fearlessly and with complete confi dence,” Bridel said. “If we can do that every me we play, then we will have accomplished what we set out to do.

“It does not guarantee victories in tennis but it will provide the greatest opportunity to achieve victories.”

While the Flyers had a taste of NCAA postseason play last year, there’s always room for more, according to Bridel.

“I know that last season’s experiences are going to have us more prepared this spring,” Bridel said. “We need to focus on being fi t, more mentally tough, and refuse to lose on the tennis court and in the classroom, while remaining well-balanced student-athletes”

Bridel will have the luxury of returning redshirt junior, Uno Lapimaa. Lapimaa, the 2010 GLVC Player of the Year, enters the 2011 season as the No.1 player in the Midwest Region. Last sea-

son, Lapimaa fi nished with a record of 30-1 at No. 1 singles.

Lapimaa’s classmate, Tonis Irdoja, has been equally as eff ec ve, as the Tallinn, Estonia na ve went 20-10 in singles play last season. In two seasons, Irdoja has posted 43 wins in singles play. Lapimaa and Irdoja also went a combined 15-5 in doubles play in 2009-10.

“Uno and Tonis have changed the culture of our tennis program,” Bridel said. “The stats speak volumes about their impact on the court but they mean so much more to us than that.”

“They are both great leaders, students, and ambassadors for Lewis University,” Bridel con n-ued. “The two of them have been the founda on of our team and we will con nue to count on them.”

The Flyers also return the services of senior Lorenz Pes nger and sophomore Jesse Hardacre. In their fi rst season at Lewis, Pes nger collected 19 singles and 20 doubles victories while Hardacre had 20 singles and 15 doubles wins in 2009-10.

Lewis junior Michael Wojnarowski returns to the Flyer line-up a er totaling a singles record of 13-9 and a doubles mark of 15-9 last year.

Other student-athletes providing depth for Bridel’s squad includes sophomores Brandon Tilton and Nick Heidenfelder; along with junior Ma Heidenfelder. Newcomers to the team include graduate student Jon Teune and freshman Selwyn Hansana.

“I am extremely proud of this group and privileged to have the opportunity to coach them,” Bridel said. “I am proud of our progression on the tennis court and more so that we haven’t sac-rifi ced academics in the process. “As our winning percentage has increased, so has our team grade point average.”

Established in 1978 with a commitment to the purposes, fundamental policies and basic principles of the National Collegiate Athletic Association, the Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) has grown to embody the vision established by the founders of the organization and has melded athletic and academic excellence for 32 years. The GLVC, which over the past decade has grown to 17 members, has fully embraced NCAA Division II and is now the largest athletic conference in the country in any division. Although formed and developed as one of the nation’s premier basketball conferences, the GLVC has nurtured 17 championship sports and can now claim itself as one of the nation’s top NCAA Division II conferences. The formation of the GLVC can be traced as far back as 1972 when the athletic directors of three member schools - Kentucky Wesleyan, Bellarmine and Indiana State University at Evansville (now the University of Southern Indiana) - began preliminary discussions about forming a basketball conference. Four years later, the University of Indianapolis and Saint Joseph’s College expressed interest. On July 7, 1978, those schools - along with Ashland University - united to become the GLVC. Since its inception, 15 different institutions have joined the league. Those members include: Lewis University (1980), Indiana-Purdue at Fort Wayne (1984), Northern Kentucky University (1985), Kentucky State University (1989), Quincy University (1994), Southern Illinois University Edwardsville (1994), University of Wisconsin-Parkside (1994), University of Missouri-St. Louis (1995), Drury (2005), Missouri S&T (2005), Rockhurst (2005), University of Illinois-Springfield (2008), Maryville University (2008), William Jewell College (2009) and McKendree University (2010). Ashland and Kentucky State left the conference after the 1994 season, IPFW left the league following the 2000-01 academic year and SIU Edwardsville exited the league following the 2007-08 academic year. These departures opened the door for the seven-team expansion over the past decade, allowing the league to grow to its current membership of 17 institutions. The conference headquarters are located in downtown Indianapolis, one of the many major Midwest media markets in which the league maintains a presence. The GLVC has schools in Milwaukee/Northern Illinois (UW-Parkside), Chicago (Lewis), Indianapolis (Indianapolis), Cincinnati (Northern Kentucky), Louisville (Bellarmine), Evansville (Southern Indiana), Springfield, Ill. (UIS), Springfield, Mo. (Drury), Owensboro (Kentucky Wesleyan), Kansas City (Rockhurst, William Jewell) and St. Louis (Maryville, UM-St. Louis). The conference sponsors 17 championships in baseball, basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, indoor and outdoor track and field, and tennis for men and basketball, cross country, softball, soccer, tennis, indoor and outdoor track and field, golf, and volleyball for women. In addition, the GLVC has also recently announced a timeline for sponsoring football in the conference which will begin play in 2012. GLVC institutions have won 11 national championships in basketball. Kentucky Wesleyan leads all Division II institutions with eight men’s basketball titles, while Southern Indiana won the men’s crown in 1995. Northern Kentucky’s women won the school’s first-ever basketball national championship in 2000 and followed that with a national title in 2008. In addition, SIU Edwardsville became the first GLVC member to win a national championship in softball in 2007 and Southern Indiana staked claim to the school and GLVC’s first national championship in baseball in 2010. The league also takes pride in recognizing the many academic and athletic accomplishments achieved by its student-athletes, coaches and administrators. In 2001, the league announced the creation of the GLVC Hall of Fame, with the first class being inducted in 2002. The GLVC annually presents the Richard F. Scharf Paragon Award to the top male and female student-athlete in the league, and the Dr. Charles Bertram Alumni Award of Distinction to alumni who both succeeded while a GLVC student-athlete and excelled in accomplishments after graduation. The GLVC strives to adhere to the NCAA Division II Strategic Platform and has introduced several initiatives in recent years including the GLVC Sportsmanship Award which acknowledges the institution that exemplifies sportsmanship in the view of its peers. The league continually maintains an effort to combine academic and athletic excellence and the hard work put forth by the student-athletes has been evident on the playing fields and in the classrooms.

Brother James Gaffney, FSC, President of Lewis University since 1988, has provided leadership during a period of signifi cant growth that has seen enroll-ment increase to more than 6,000 students, while the University has received regional and even national recognition for its academic quality. During his tenure, the entire campus has been transformed through numerous construction and renovation projects, amounting to an investment of more than $135 million. HISTORY Founded in 1932 under the direction of the Chicago Archdiocese and Bishop Bernard J. Sheil, Lewis began as the Holy Name Technical School, a school for boys and was established on 170 acres of farmland donated by Mi-chael and Frances Fitzpatrick of Lockport. Aviation technol-ogy became the special emphasis of instruction and the origin of today’s highly regarded Department of Aviation and Transportation Studies. During World War II, hundreds of Navy fl ight instructors were trained at Lewis. In 1952, the school

was renamed the Lewis College of Science and Tech-nology and granted its fi rst baccalaureate degrees. In 1960, the De La Salle Christian Brothers - members of a 328-year-old religious order devoted exclusively to teaching and named after Saint John Baptist de La Salle, their founder and Patron Saint of Educators – assumed direction of the institution. When Dan Schumacher was hired as Lewis University’s Director of Athletics in June of 2006, the Chicago native knew the heights that the Flyers Athlet-ics program could reach as a department. With great vision comes great expectations, and Schumacher and the Flyers have most certainly delivered. Since his arrival, Lewis has won fi ve regular-season Great Lakes Valley Conference championships and nine GLVC Tournament championships, while making appearances in 12 NCAA Tournaments, including the men’s soccer team’s run to the ‘Final Four’ in 2009. While the Flyers have made improvements on the fi eld, the fi elds have also been improved during Schumacher’s tenure, as there has been over $500,000 worth of facility upgrades on the Romeoville campus. Schumacher helped speed up the facility upgrade timeline by forming the Varsity Club, an organized,

non-profi t fundraising arm of the Lewis University Athletic Department that supports small-scale capital improvements. Neil Carey Arena, home of both basketball and volleyball teams, has seen the most upgrades as it now features a new fl oor, scoreboards, a video board, island baskets and retractable bleachers which has increased the seating to over 1,000. Both the men’s and women’s swimming teams have directly benefi tted from Schumacher’s efforts, as the Lewis Swimming Pool now has a state-of-the-art scoring system which has allowed the program to increase its home schedule. The locker rooms in Neil Carey Arena have been remodeled and are now equipped with fl at screen tele-visions. Lewis now has the ability to video stream all of their home basketball games and volleyball matches from the Arena on www.LewisFlyers.com. Schumacher has also helped make the John F. Ken-nedy Sports Center become more ‘Flyer Friendly’, as the hallways proudly display Lewis Athletics Artwork and each offi ce has furniture that has the Lewis Flyers Athletics logo emblazoned on it. The Athletic Training room has been remodeled and now holds custom tables, cabinets, fl ooring and an ice machine. Outside the JFK Sports Center, the Lewis softball team now has new dugouts, a new press box and a custom windscreen for the outfi eld fence, while the outfi eld fence of Brennan Field, home of the Flyer baseball team, now has a custom windscreen as well. On the docket for both fi elds are brand new Daktron-ics scoreboards, which are slated to be fi nished by the 2011 season. What Schumacher is most proud of, however, is the performance of his student-athletes in the classroom. In the past three years, the graduation rate for Lewis student-athletes has risen from 60% to as high as 86%, while the Flyers’ Academic Success Rate (ASR) has peaked at a remarkable 98%, Schumacher has brought along seven new head

coaches, including women’s volleyball coach Lorelee Smith and men’s basketball coach Scott Trost. Smith has won two Great Lakes Valley Conference regular season championships, along with two GLVC Tourna-ment championships while losing just 17 matches in three seasons. In his second season as the head coach, Trost led the Flyers to 20 wins for just the 14th time in school history, as well as an appearance in the GLVC Tournament fi nals and a berth in the NCAA Tournament for the fi rst time since 2004. A 1986 Carl Sandburg High School graduate, Schum-acher was responsible for the fi nancial administration of Winona State athletics. Among his duties were marketing and promotions, development, external relations, corporate relations, facilities oversight, budgeting and NCAA compliance. Schumacher was the primary catalyst of a two-year campaign that generated $3 million, through private donations and newly developed athletics department revenue channels, for major improvements to Winona State’s soccer, football, baseball, softball and bas-ketball facilities. He also spearheaded a project that transformed a $42,000 annual corporate sponsorship program into an annual corporate/external relations program that generates $500,000 in scholarships for Winona State athletics and the WSU Foundation. Schumacher spent seven years with Conseco Finance Corporation prior to joining the Winona State staff, serving as Senior Credit Manager from 1995-98 and as Vice President from 1998-2002. He was a Branch Manager for TCF Bank and Mortgage Corpora-tion in Minneapolis from 1990-95. Schumacher earned a bachelor’s degree in public relations (business administration minor) in 1989 and a master’s degree in educational/school administra-tion in 2005, both at Winona State. As a member of the WSU football team, he garnered All-America honors and served two seasons as a team captain. Schumacher and wife Kristin are the parents of daughter Kasey (15) and sons Jack (12) and Declan (8).
