Season Outlook

fter the past two seasons where they recorded a record of 27-22 the Saluki women’s tennis team looks to improve and continue to build on that success for the 2011-12 season.

“I am very excited about the potential of this 2011-2012 team. I think the newcomers are going to give us the depth that we need and create a better practice environment. Everyone will practice harder and try to get better if they know that someone else is working to take their spot.”

Among the new additions to this year’s squad is Ariadna Cairo Baza. Ariadna is currently ranked No. 64 in Women’s Open Singles in Spain. “Ariadna has an excellent tennis mentality and hustles for every ball,” Nothwehr said.

Ariadna will be joined this year by her twin sister Gisela Cairo Baza who is ranked No. 105 in Women’s Open Singles in Spain. “Gisela is a player with a heavy ball, and she is a fighter, which makes it hard to beat her,” Nothwehr said.

Also joining the class is Natasha Tomishima from Campo Grande, Brazil, who held a top-5 junior ranking.

“Natasha can really place the ball well, and she is a smart player,” Nothwehr said. “She won’t overpower her opponents, but she hits a smart ball and moves well.”

The fourth newcomer is walk-on Siera Hasler of Morton, Ill. She played No. 1 singles during her junior and senior year at Morton High School and was named First-Team All-Conference.

“Siera has desire and motivation,” according to Nothwehr. “She is the best walk-on that I’ve had and she has been taking games off of the other players already. She has great potential for the future.”

The Saluki’s won’t have a senior leader but they will return three juniors in Melanie Delsart, Jennifer Dien, and Anastacia Simons. These players will be expected to take on a leadership role this year. Pushing each other and the newcomers.

“Our juniors will play a huge leadership role for us this year, especially Melanie Delsart, as she has been our No. 1 doubles and singles player for the past two years.” Nothwehr said.

The Saluki’s look to improve this year. They have a good schedule to work with facing some regional opponents while also playing in several competitive fall tournaments.

In addition to the MVC schedule, SIU will face programs such as Northern Illinois, Austin Peay, and Saint Louis.

A“Our juniors will play a huge leadership role for us this year” -Audra Nothwehr
