The Don C. Bunch Courts, named after a long-time Citadel administrator and tennis coach of 30 years, received a major facelift in the fall of 1995 with Laykold resurfacing, new wind-screens and new fencing. In addition, the entire facility was landscaped to blend with the cam-pus. Lights were added to three courts in the fall of 1998. In the fall of 2008, the tennis courts received more updates including The Citadel’s block C in the flooring of the tennis office and tinted sun resistant windows.

Starting his eighth season at The Cita-del and seventh as head coach, Toby Simpson leads a tennis program that is a force to be reckoned with in the South-ern Conference. Simpson continues to develop cadet-student-athletes into successful tennis players and winning teams. Under Simpson’s guidance, The Citadel has reached the quarterfinals (or further) in the Southern Conference Tournament four of the last seven sea-sons.

The Bulldogs finished their 2008 sea-son in the Southern Conference quar-terfinals. The Citadel finished fourth in the SoCon with a 15-10 overall record.Daniel Dossetor, James Eason and All-SoCon freshman Yufo Sutantio were the top players in 2008, Eason became the first tennis player at The Citadel to receive SoCon’s Dave Hart Graduate Scholarship.

The Bulldogs struggled in 2007 but Ea-son and Dossetor proved once again to be among the best players in the Southern Conference. The duo made school history by being the first nation-ally ranked doubles team, ranking as high as 20th. Dossetor became the first

singles player ever nationally ranked in school history at 118th in the nation. The Citadel finished 10th in the conference.

The Bulldogs finished sixth in the league in 2006. James Eason finished the year as the only player in the SoCon to go undefeated in conference singles play, earning All-SoCon Second Team hon-ors. Eason and Dossetor paired up to bring home All-SoCon first team honors in doubles. Simpson’s teams excelled in the classroom as well as two cadets- Eason and Nick Medica were named to ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District Team and Medica was named Academic All-American second team.

Prior to the 2006 season, the Bulldogs posted two fourth-place finishes in the league’s final rankings. During the 2003-04 campaign, the cadets started with an impressive SoCon record of 6-0. In his five years at The Citadel, Simpson had taken the Bulldogs from 11th in the So-Con to fourth.

Along with the team’s success, Coach Simpson has had many team members gain individual honors on the courts as well. In 2004-05, he coached Dossetor to the first team All-Southern Conference team as well as the SoCon Freshman of the Year Award. James Eason was also tabbed second team All-SoCon and Dos-setor and Eason claimed first team All-SoCon selection in doubles. Stubbs was also a first team All-SoCon pick in his sopho-

more campaign, Simpson’s first year at The Citadel. Williams was awarded The Citadel Brigadier Foundation’s Senior Athlete of the Year Award as the top se-nior cadet-student-athlete at The Citadel as voted by fellow seniors.

In 2002, 04’, 05’ and 08’, the tennis team achieved the honor as an NCAA/ITA All-America Team with an overall GPA of 3.2 or better, the best of 3.6 in ‘08.

The Bulldogs Look to Have the Best Season Ever in 2009

With four starters returning this season The Citadel Men’s Ten-nis Team could have one of the best seasons in Bulldog tennis program history. With an emergence of four new freshmen, Josh Cook, Derek Dickey, Tripp Larkin and Josh Rumph the future of Bulldog tennis looks bright. The Bulldogs are poised to make a run for a SoCon title and an NCAA tournament birth. Although on paper they may look like a contender, Head Coach Toby Simpson knows there is still much work to be done.

“We have a team makeup of predominately younger guys this year. This team is ready to work hard and make significant strides,” said Simpson. “As a team we must continue to work hard day in and day out to achieve our goals and not rely upon our talent alone. All of our conference opponents have improved over the course of the past year, as we have also, so it should be a fun, competitive year.”

Senior Martin King, Juniors Alberto Diaz and Frederic Petrilli, and All SoCon sophomore Yufo Sutantio are returning after solid performances last season and look to leave their mark on The Citadel Men’s Tennis Program. Michael Kociecki, a graduate student transfer from Furman College, is another wild card that should immediately bolster the Bulldog lineup.

“There will be a lot of competition for all spots in the line up. Hope-fully by the start of the SoCon schedule we will have a solid lineup each and every day. I believe the freshmen will challenge the returners each day and this should benefit us in the long run,” said Simpson.

The Citadel’s schedule is very competitive as it includes tough So-Con opponents and challenging non-conference matchups. The Bulldogs open the season on Jan. 24, 2009 against Clemson.

The Citadel tennis team faced a tough schedule but came out with a 15-10 overall record, 5-4 in the SoCon, a great comeback from the previous season. The Bulldogs finished fourth in the confer-ence, falling just one point to Wofford in the SoCon quarterfinals. James Eason and Daniel Dossetor made their lasting impressions on The Citadel’s record books. Dossetor finished on the SoCon All-Conference first team and the All-Conference second team in doubles along with freshman standout Yufo Sutantio. The Bull-dogs picked up several academic honors including Eason receiv-ing the SoCon Dave Hart Graduate Scholarship. Eason became the first Citadel tennis player to receive this award.

The Bulldogs opened the season with three losses, one including a SoCon match against Davidson. The Citadel then picked up their first win against Wofford, improving to 1-1 in the conference. Then the Bulldogs traveled to Clemson, S.C. for the Clemson Spring Classic to take on Southern Mississippi, Emory and USC Upstate. The team came out with a 7-0 shutout against Emory.

The Citadel made their way back home to go on a four-game win-ning streak, defeating Bethune-Cookman, Presbyterian, Toledo and James Madison. The hot streak did not last long when the Bulldogs suffered a devasting 7-0 loss to Elon and then falling to East Carolina, 3-4, 6-7, 1-2.

The four-game winning streak returned when The Citadel beat Chattanooga, UNC Greensboro, Charlotte and Boston University. The Buckeyes of Ohio State shutout the Bulldogs but only to force The Citadel’s last four wins against Wingate, first time opponent Queens University of Charlotte, College of Charleston and Geor-gia Southern.

The Bulldogs made it to the SoCon Tournament for the 10th year in a row. The tournament was held at The Citadel’s Earle Tennis Center and Donald C. Bunch Courts. Because of the great regular season by the Bulldogs, they earned a bye for the first round of the tournament. The Bulldogs competed against Wofford and the Ter-riers would seek revenge after The Citadel slipped passed them with a 4-3 win earlier in the season. Wofford’s momentum was present forcing a 4-3 upset against the Bulldogs.

The Citadel’s lost the dynamic duo, seniors James Eason and Daniel Dossestor graduated but returns Martin King, Frederick Petrilli, All-SoCon Yufo Sutantio, four talented freshmen and a standout transfer from Furman for the 2008-09 season.

The Southern Conference, which began its 88th season of intercollegiate competi-tion in 2008, is a national leader in emphasizing the development of the student-athlete and in helping to build lifelong leaders and role models.

The Southern Conference has been on the forefront of innovation and originality in developing creative solutions to address issues facing intercollegiate athletics. Fromestablishingthefirstconferencebasketball tournament(1921),tacklingtheissue of freshmen eligibility (1922), developing women’s championships (1984) and becomingthefirstconferencetoinstallthethree-pointgoalinbasketball(1980),theSouthern Conference has been a pioneer.

Academic excellence has been a major part of the Southern Conference’s tradi-tion. Hundreds of Southern Conference student-athletes have been recognized on ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-America and all-district teams. A total of 19 Rhodes Scholarship winners have been selected from conference institu-tions.

TheConference currently consists of 12members in five states throughout theSoutheast and sponsors 19 varsity sports and championships that produce partici-pants for NCAA Division I Championships.

Membership HistoryOn Feb. 25, 1921, representatives from 14 of the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association’s (SIAA) 30 members met at Atlanta’s Piedmont Hotel to establish the Southern Intercollegiate Conference. On hand at the inaugural meeting were of-ficialsfromAlabama,AlabamaPolytechnicInstitute(Auburn),Clemson,Georgia,Georgia School of Technology (Georgia Tech), Kentucky, Maryland, Mississippi A&M (Mississippi State), North Carolina, North Carolina State, Tennessee, Virginia, Virginia Polytechnic Institute (Virginia Tech) and Washington & Lee.

Dr. S.V. Sanford of Georgia was chosen as acting chairman and N.W. Dougherty of Tennessee was named secretary. The decision to form a new athletic conference was motivated by the desire to have a workable number of conference games for each league member. With 30 schools in the SIAA by the early 1920s, it was impos-sible to play every school at least once during the regular season and many schools went several years between playing some conference members. In addition, in 1920, the SIAA voted down proposed rules that an athlete must be in a college a year before playing on its teams and refused to abolish a rule permitting athletes to play summer baseball for money.

Playbeganinthefallof1921andayearlater,sixmoreschoolsjoinedthefledglingleague including Tulane (which had attended the inaugural meeting but had elected not to join), Florida, Louisiana (LSU), Mississippi, South Carolina and Vanderbilt. VMI joined in 1925 and Duke was added in 1929.

By the 1930s, membership in the Southern Conference had reached 23 schools. C.P. “Sally” Miles of Virginia Tech, president of the Southern Conference, called the annual league meeting to order on Dec. 9, 1932 at the Farragut Hotel in Knoxville, Tenn. Georgia’s Dr. Sanford announced that 13 institutions west and south of the Appalachian Mountains were reorganizing as the Southeastern Conference. Mem-bers of the new league included including Alabama, Alabama Polytechnic Institute, Florida, Georgia, Georgia School of Technology, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Mississippi A&M, University of the South, Tennessee, Tulane and Vanderbilt.

According to the minutes of the meeting, Dr. Sanford stated that the division was made along geographical lines. Florida’s Dr. J.J. Tigert, acting as spokesman for the withdrawing group, regretted the move but believed it was necessary as the Southern Conference had grown too large. The resignations were accepted and the withdrawing schools formed the new league which began play in 1932.

The Southern Conference continued with membership of 10 institutions including Clemson, Duke, Maryland, North Carolina, North Carolina State, South Carolina, Virginia, VMI, Virginia Tech and Washington & Lee.

The second major shift occurred some 20 years later. By 1952, the Southern Con-ference included 17 colleges and universities. Another split occurred when seven schools including Clemson, Duke, Maryland, North Carolina, North Carolina State, South Carolina and Wake Forest departed to form the Atlantic Coast Conference which began play in 1953. The revamped Southern Conference included mem-bers The Citadel, Davidson, Furman, George Washington, Richmond, VMI, Virginia Tech, Washington & Lee, West Virginia and William & Mary.

Today, the league continues to thrive with a membership that includes 12 insti-tutionsanda footprint that spans five states:Tennessee,NorthCarolina,SouthCarolina, Alabama and Georgia. Current league members are Appalachian State, College of Charleston, The Citadel, Davidson, Elon, Furman, Georgia Southern, UNC Greensboro, Samford, Chattanooga, Western Carolina and Wofford.

Championship HistoryThefirstSouthernConferenceChampionshipwas the leaguebasketball tourna-ment held in Atlanta in 1922. The North Carolina Tar Heels won the tournament to becomethefirstrecognizedleaguechampioninanysport.TheSouthernConfer-ence Tournament remains the oldest of its kind in college basketball. Commissioner Germann spearheaded the Southern Conference’s expansion to include women’s athletics during the 1983-84 season. That year, league champion-ships were held in volleyball, basketball and tennis. Cross country joined the mix in 1985 and the league began holding indoor and outdoor track championships in 1988. Most recently, the conference instituted golf and softball championships in the spring of 1994 and added soccer in the fall of 1994.

The Germann Cup, named in honor of the former commissioner, annually recogniz-es the top women’s athletics programs in the conference. From its humble begin-nings, women’s athletics have become an integral part of the Southern Conference and its success.

The Southern Conference declares champions in 10 men’s sports - football, soc-cer,crosscountry,basketball,indoortrackandfield,outdoortrackandfield,wres-tling, baseball, tennis and golf - and nine women’s sports - soccer, volleyball, cross country, basketball, indoor trackandfield, outdoor track&field, tennis, golfandsoftball.

This is The CitadelThe Military College of South Carolina

The Citadel is a state-supported comprehensive military college with the mission of educating principled leaders through its Corps of Cadets. Males and females are admitted to the undergraduate residential Corps of Cadets. In addition to the day program, undergraduate and graduate programs are offered through The Citadel Graduate College (CGC) in the evening.

The South Carolina Commission on Higher Education recognizes The Citadel as the only specialized four-year college in the state. The Citadel, founded in 1842, is a co-educational military college with a rich and storied history. Located in Charleston, S.C., the institution offers a classic military education for young men and women who seek a college experience that is intense, meaningful and academically strong. Graduates of The Citadel say that the disciplined lifestyle and friendships they forged here have a profoundly positive effect on their lives.

With an enrollment of more than 1,900, the Corps of Cadets is the nation’s larg-est military college program outside the service academies. All cadets are educated within a classic military system and about 40 percent of the graduating seniors earn military commissions. The remaining graduates attend graduate school or enter the job market.

The Citadel Graduate College, which is noted for The Citadel excellence in a civilian environment, serves about 1,700 residents of South Carolina’s Lowcountry.

Academic programs at the college are complimented by a strong commitment to service and emphatic support of an honor code that calls upon a cadet not to lie, cheat or steal or tolerate those who do. Since its founding in 1842, The Citadel’s em-phasis on character, as well as intellect, has produced generations of graduates who have served their nation, their professions and their communities with distinction.

Corps of Cadets ...All undergraduate students at The Citadel are members of the South Carolina Corps of Cadets, which numbers approximately 1,900 and represent nearly every state, as well as more than 20 countries. While roughly 40 percent of the graduates each year go into the armed services, all cadets participate in an ROTC program. On most days, cadets have physical fitness training and military instruction in addition to their regular college classes. Weekdays end with a formation and required evening study period.

Because The Citadel emphasizes corps unity, cadets cannot be married and all must live on campus in the barracks with their assigned company. Despite the challenges, cadets value their first year for the lessons in teamwork, self-discipline and time management. The disciplined lifestyle that begins in the knob year binds cadets into a lifelong, close-knit camaraderie that is one of the strongest forces in their lives after graduation.

Academic Programs...Because of the strength of the academ-ic program, The Citadel has repeatedly been rated as a top regional institution in the annual rankings issued by U.S. News and World Report. The quality of the education at The Citadel combined with the availability of financial aid, the credentials of the faculty and the gradu-ation rate earned the institution the citation of Best College Value in the South in 2008.

Honor“A Cadet does not Lie, Cheat, or Steal,

nor Tolerate those who do.”The Honor Code is fairly simple. This code, while simple, offers the key to living and maintaining an honorable life. Cadets are trained that there is never a situation in which they should participate in, or tolerate, dishonorable activi-ties. These core values of honor and integrity are exactly the values which allow Citadel cadets and alumni to improve their organizations and their communities.

Honor is the most cherished principle at The Citadel. In today’s post-corporate-scandal society, honor, integrity and ethics are in high demand. The Citadel strives to achieve ex-cellence in the education of principled leaders, also known as the “whole person” concept. The Honor Code encom-passes all aspects of cadet life, from academic integrity to personal integrity. It has evolved from an unwritten tradition known as the “code of the gentleman” to a formalized code in September of 1955, when the Corps of Cadets unani-

mously voted to establish The Honor Code. The development of a cadet into a principled leader is a four-tiered process that includes knowing, adhering, believing, and leading. Its culmination is seen in the cadets who internalize the Code and the alumni who continually apply it throughout their lives.

Cadet PrayerAlmighty God, the source of light and strength, we implore Thy blessing on this our beloved institution, that it may continue

true to its high purposes.

Guide and strengthen those upon whom rests the authority of government; enlighten with wisdom those who teach and those who learn; and grant to all of us that through sound learning and firm leadership, we may prove ourselves worthy citizens of our country, devoted to truth, given to unselfish service, loyal to every obligation of life and above all to Thee.

Preserve us faithful to the ideals of The Citadel, sincere in fellowship, unswerving in duty, finding joy in purity and confidence through a steadfast faith.

Grant to each one of us, in his/her own life, a humble heart, a steadfast purpose, and a joyful hope, with a readiness to en-dure hardship and suffer if need be, that truth may prevail among us and that Thy will may be done on earth. Through Jesus

Christ, Our Lord. Amen.

LeadershipConquering Challenges Through

Patience, Persistence, Discipline, Determination, Teamwork and HardworkCadet Creed

I will always endeavor to uphold the prestige, honor, and high esprit de corps of The Citadel and the South Carolina Corps of Cadets.

Never shall I fail my comrades. I will always keep myself mentally alert, physically tough, and morally straight, and I will shoulder more than my share of the task whatever it may be.

Gallantly will I show the world that I am a well-trained cadet. My courtesy to superior officers, neatness of dress, and care of equipment shall set the example for others to follow.

And under no circumstances will I ever bring discredit to The Citadel and the South Carolina Corps of Cadets.

Graduates of The Citadel succeed because they know what it takes to meet a challenge in any field: patience and persistence, discipline and determination, teamwork and hardwork.

The Citadel emphasizes athletic competition as a way to build leaders, learn teamwork and prepare for life’s challenges. Physi-cal fitness represents a vital component of every Cadet’s experience. All Cadets take physical education courses and partici-pate in one or more of our 28 intramural sports, 15 intercollegiate club sports or 16 NCAA Division I athletic programs.

Graduates of The Citadel benefit from an invaluable lifelong association with other alumni. Talk to any graduate of The Citadel, and you will sense firsthand the powerful force of the strong alumni network.

Sir, Yes, Sir • Sir, No, SirSir, No Excuse, Sir

“...three permissible knob answers: ‘Sir, yes, sir’ and ‘Sir, no, sir’ and—I liked this third one best of all—’Sir, no excuse, sir.’ By golly, I think, we ought to send the entire U.S. Congress down here to learn answer number three.”

The Honorable Ronald Reagan40th President of the United States

May 15, 1993

Whatever their major, all cadets will graduate with a “dual degree” in lead-ership. They learn about attention to detail, respect, time management, and discipline.

“Leadership is about integrity, trust and people. The Citadel, with its mis-sion to prepare graduates to be pricipled leaders, is all about integrity, trust and people. There is no question in my mind that, had I not attended The Citadel to learn these values, I would not have come close to achieving what success I have been fortunate enough to achieve.”
