NCAA DIVISION III

In 2013, Covenant became full members of the NCAA Division III following a four year transitional period from 2009-2013.

The largest division, in terms of number of schools and number of participants, is Division III comprised by more than 170,000 student-athletes at 444 mostly smaller institutions.

Academics are the primary focus for Division III student-athletes. The division minimizes

the conflicts between athletics and academics and keeps student-athletes on a path to graduation through shorter practice and playing seasons, the number of contests, no redshirting and regional competition that reduces time away from academic studies. Student-athletes are integrated on campus and treated like all other members of the general student-body, keeping them focused on being a student first.

The college experience is a time of learning and growth — a chance to follow passions and develop potential. For student-athletes in Division III, all of this happens most importantly in the classroom and through earning an academic degree. The Division III experience provides for passionate participation in a competitive athletic environment, in which student-athletes push themselves to excellence and build upon their academic success with new challenges and life skills. And student-athletes are encouraged to pursue their full passions and find their potential through a comprehensive educational experience.

USA SOUTH ATHLETIC CONFERENCE

In 2013, Covenant became members of the USA South Athletic Conference. The conference is comprised of schools from Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, North Carolina and Virginia.

All told, the USA South has 13 full-fledged members along with one associate member in football.

In volleyball and women’s basketball, the conference is split into two divisions (North and South). Covenant plays in the South division in those sports with Huntingdon, LaGrange, Maryville and Piedmont.

In all sports - with the exception of cross country, men’s golf and baseball - the top eight teams in the conference regular season standings advance to participate in the conference tournament. There is no conference tournament for baseball in 2015.

HOME OF THE SCOTSThe Tennis programs opened up a brand new complex during the 2014 spring season. Thanks in large part to generous donations, the complex boasts six courts between three adjacent sections. As part of the complex, lights have been installed on every court, allow-ing the programs to play into the night.

Before 2014, the tennis programs, which were started in 2007, had to travel to area high schools and other venues in the Chattanooga area to play their “home” matches over the years. But all that changed once these courts were completed.

“We are extremely excited about the new courts,” said head tennis coach John Hirte. “Being able to play matches on campus will create a true ‘home court’ atmosphere that will hope-fully lead to more success and a more enjoyable experience for our players and fans.”

The complex sits between Ashe Activity Center and Scotland Yard and offers astonishing views of the Tennessee Valley and the surrounding mountains.

Admissions PolicyWhile there is no charge for admission to regular season games, there may be a charge for postseason events and tournaments. No free admission or season passes can be used for USA South Athletic Conference championships or tournaments. John Hirte Head CoachThe 2014-15 season will be John Hirte’s third as head

coach of the men’s and women’s tennis teams at Covenant

College.

Hirte was a successful player while he was a student at

Covenant. He won numerous accolades including GSAC

Player of the Year in 2012 for going undefeated in singles

play during his senior season, NCCAA First Team All-

American status (2012), and NCCAA Scholar Athlete honors.

He was also instrumental in Covenant’s only trip to the

NCCAA National Tournament in 2010.

In his collegiate career, Hirte won 40 singles matches which

ranks second all-time in Covenant program history behind

Josh Jeremiah (50).

In his second year of guiding the Covenant programs, he

led the women’s team to a school record 16 victories and

an appearance in the USA South tournament semifinals.

Hirte’s women’s team had two USA South All-Conference

performers. On the men’s side, Hirte’s team snapped a long

losing streak as they continued to show vast improvement.

“I am extremely excited about the opportunity to begin

my coaching career at Covenant, a place where I have had

a wonderful four years as a student, and as an athlete,”

Hirte said at the time of his hiring. “I hope to bring growth

and stability to the tennis program as we aim to achieve

more success in the years to come.”

Before arriving at Covenant as a student-athlete, Hirte

was an accomplished high school player in his hometown

of Maple Grove, Minn. Hirte lettered six times in tennis

and four times in basketball, was a conference champion

his junior season and a Minnesota state quarterfinalist

his senior year. After concluding his Covenant career and

graduating with a major in history and a minor in coaching,

Hirte was hired as head coach for the upcoming season.

Hirte and his wife, Claire, were married in August of 2013 and the couple lives on Lookout Mountain, Ga.

Sarah Carter Student Assistant

After competing for three years, Carter will serve as a student assistant

for head coach John Hirte in the spring of 2015. Carter suffered an

injury in the fall of 2014 that did not allow her to compete in the

spring.

During her playing career, Carter accumulated 14 singles victories

over three seasons. She played No. 1 doubles as a junior in 2014 and

won 10 matches with teammate Madeline Hyatt.

Carter attended Carlisle High School and is from Boca Raton, Fla. She

was a USA South All-Academic performer in the 2013-14 year.

Women’s Tennis hoping to build on 2014 season

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- The 2014 edition of the Covenant women’s tennis team set new heights for the program. The women won a program-record 16 contests and advanced to the semifinal round of the USA South tournament.

So what does head coach John Hirte’s squad do for an encore in 2015?

Entering Hirte’s third year at the helm of the program, Covenant returns the bulk of its lineup from a season ago. Mad-eline Hyatt is gone and Sarah Carter is out for the year with an injury, but the Lady Scots were picked to finish fourth in the USA South preseason poll. Gretchen Rowe highlights the top returners that also include Gracie Smith, Claire Luger and Lindsay Geving.

A senior, Rowe won nine singles matches at the No. 2 spot last year, including a 7-2 mark in USA South matches, and was named to the All-USA South second team. Smith, a sophomore, won a school-record 16 singles matches last sea-son and also tallied 11 doubles wins and was a third team All-USA South choice.

Luger put together a solid freshman campaign last year as she finished second on the team with 12 singles wins. Geving, in her first year of collegiate tennis, produced 10 singles wins as a sophomore and more recently won three matches at the ITA Regionals in September.

“We have good leadership, as most of our top returners are going to anchor the top of our lineup,” Hirte said of his top returners. “I expect them to go out and compete well every match against stiff competition.”

Hirte’s recruiting class netted a couple of players he expects to help the team. Annie Deluca (Alpharetta, Ga.) and Jen-nie Spielman (Longmont, Colo.) headline the group.

“I expect Annie and Jenny to see significant time. I think they bring some fresh energy to the team, and I see them contributing in our lineup,” added Hirte.

Rounding out the roster are newcomers in freshman Mackenzie Jones and junior Jessica Rowe. Rowe, the younger sister of Gretchen, is playing collegiate tennis for the first time this season and is a three-year player on the Covenant women’s soccer team. Also coming back in 2015 is junior Catherine Landers. Landers was a GSAC All-Freshmen team selection in 2013.

“Certainly, we want to build on our success,” Hirte said. “That is not going to be an easy task, because our conference is so improved. I think we have a tougher schedule this year.”

After opening against Snead State on Saturday at home, Covenant travels to regional power Sewanee on Friday, Feb. 13 before going to Birmingham Southern on Feb. 21. Covenant opens USA South play at home on Feb. 27 against Meredith.

“The Birmingham Southern and Millsaps doubleheader is exciting,” noted Hirte about his schedule. “Sewanee is nationally ranked and is a good challenge. Big conference matches are Meredith, Huntingdon and Piedmont. We go to Oglethorpe and Agnes Scott, which is a good road test. We beat them both here, so they are eager to return the favor.”

Men’s Tennis prepared to improve in 2015

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- The Covenant men’s tennis team is looking to put its struggles of the last few years behind them when they begin a new season on Saturday against Gadsden State. The match was slated to be played on cam-pus, but because of less than ideal weather on Saturday it has been moved to McCallie School in Chattanooga and will start at 2 p.m.

Head coach John Hirte expects improvement from his young team, and believes his newcomers are ready to make an impact: “I am excited about the guys this year. We brought a good freshman class in that is ready to work hard and, hopefully, we can see that bear fruit this year.”

The crop of four freshmen features Chris Cox (Maitland, Florida), John Granholm (Naples, Florida), Matthew Harvie (Grayson, Georgia) and Dan Madden (Bishop, Georgia).

Cox has already made an impact, competing in the UTC Steve Baras Fall Classic in September. Against Division I compe-tition, Cox impressed by defeating a player from Murray State before performing admirably in falling to a player from Eastern Kentucky and one from Belmont.

Joining Cox at the fall classic was sophomore Michael O’Brien, Covenant’s returning No. 1 singles player. O’Brien col-lected a couple of victories during the tournament and paired with Cox to pick up a doubles victory against a duo from Jacksonville State.

Hirte has tabbed O’Brien as his top returner and expects him to be competitive and have a solid season this year. Cov-enant’s other top returners are senior Roy Anderson, sophomore Connor Shimmel, and junior Nathan Hernandez. “All three players saw significant action last year, which gave them a lot of match experience,” Hirte said. “I believe that will serve them well this year.”

Covenant’s other returners are sophomore Jay Pannkuk and junior Travis Hutchinson.

The combination of experience and talented freshmen coming in has Hirte thinking the Scots could surprise a few people with their play this year.

“We are a lot deeper than we were last year,” Hirte added. “We lost several close matches last year and now we are ready to turn those losses into wins. I think we can come out of nowhere be above .500 this year. That is definitely within the realm of possibility.”

After Saturday’s match, Covenant will have a week off before facing regional foes Birmingham Southern and Millsaps. The Scots will also face non-conference foes Berry, Sewanee, Oglethorpe, Point and Lynchburg.

USA South play begins March 6 at Greensboro. Covenant was picked to finish seventh in the league’s preseason poll af-ter placing ninth in the final regular season standings last season. Covenant will host the top two teams (N.C. Wesleyan and Methodist) in the preseason poll in late March.

Continued Hirte, “Overall, I am excited for the season ahead. We have guys who are solid tennis players who are good for our program.”

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- The 2014 Covenant women’s tennis

team set new heights for the program. The Lady Scots won a

school-record 16 contests and advanced to the USA South Tour-

nament semifinal in a season for the record books. The Lady

Scots finished the year 16-8 overall and 10-2 in the USA South.

In head coach John Hirte’s second season at the helm, Covenant

won 12 more contests than in the 2013 year. The ladies smashed

the previous program record of 12 for wins in a season and also

set a new mark for conference victories with 10.

Individually, freshman Gracie Smith placed her mark on the

program record book with 16 singles victories. Smith, a local

product from Chattanooga, Tenn., and Chattanooga Christian,

is already more than halfway to the program record for singles

wins in a career. Smith also had 11 doubles wins and was a third

team USA South selection.

Smith was not the only star this season. Junior Gretchen Rowe

won nine singles matches at the No. 2 position and had a 7-2

mark in the USA South which earned her a spot on the All-USA

South second team.

Freshman Claire Luger was second on the team with 12 singles

wins and fellow freshman Ellen Kirkpatrick tallied 11 victories.

Sophomore Lindsay Geving, in her first year of collegiate tennis,

produced 10 singles wins and was Covenant’s representative on

the USA South All-Sportsmanship team.

Seven players had double-digit doubles wins on the year. Luger

led the way with 14, while Rowe added 12. Smith, Molly Peele

and Sarah Carter each had 11 wins. Madeline Hyatt and Geving

had 10 apiece. Kirkpatrick finished with nine doubles victories.

Covenant had two separate six-match winning streaks during

the year. The first started with a USA South victory over Greens-

boro on February 28 and was capped with an 8-1 win over

Johnson on March 14. After dropping three of four in a span of

five days, Covenant rebounded by winning six straight, includ-

ing five wins inside the USA South, from March 26-April 5.

The victories catapulted the Lady Scots into the three-seed

for the USA South Tournament in mid-April. After dispatching

Maryville 6-3 in the opening round, Covenant fell to Meredith

6-3 in the semifinals to end the season with a 16-8 record.

Entering the season, the Lady Scots were projected to place

eighth in the USA South in the league’s preseason coaches poll.

During the year, Covenant dropped just two regular season con-

ference contests and both of those came to the teams that fin-

ished first and second in the league (Methodist and Meredith).

Covenant won 16 contests despite a schedule that saw the Lady

Scots play three eventual NCAA tournament participants in

Berry, Methodist and Sewanee.

The season was made even better with the completion of the

brand new, on-campus tennis complex. The six-court complex,

with lights, was ready for play on March 15 and the Lady Scots

rattled off two wins against LaGrange and Johnson to break in

the new courts.

The program graduates three players, Hyatt, Rowe and Peele,

but several underclassmen look to return in 2015 and build

upon the success of the 2014 campaign.

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- The 2014 edition of the Covenant men’s

tennis team saw drastic improvements under second-year head

coach John Hirte. A season after going winless, the Scots won

twice and were a win shy of going to the USA South Tourna-

ment.

The best news around the program might have been the brand

new, on-campus tennis complex that opened up for business in

March, but the team also saw some talent.

Freshmen Michael O’Brien and Frank Portlock provided stiffer

competition for opponents at the top of Hirte’s lineup. O’Brien, a

freshman from Franklin, Tenn., won four singles matches at the

No. 1 position. Fellow newcomer Portlock, from Winter Haven,

Fla., led the squad with seven singles wins at the No. 2 spot.

Sophomore Jonathan Turner added five victories, while junior

Roy Anderson took two singles wins on the year.

The new tennis complex opened up on March 15 as the Scots

hosted both USA South foe LaGrange and non-conference

opponent Johnson. After dropping the contest with LaGrange,

the Scots snapped their long losing streak with a 9-0 win over

Johnson. Covenant would get its first USA South triumph in

April when they defeated Maryville 9-0 on the road.

The season was a step in the right direction for Hirte and his

program. The rebuilding process continues but with zero

seniors on this year’s team and more solid recruits headed to

Lookout Mountain in the fall, the future is looking brighter for

Covenant’s men’s tennis program.

Parents/Boosters/Alumni/FansAre you a Booster?

A booster is an individual that:

• Promotes Covenant athletics program.• Makes a financial contribution to Covenant athletics or its booster organizations.• Assists in the recruitment of prospects for Covenant.• Provides benefits (e.g., jobs, occasional meals) to enrolled student-athletes.Once a booster.....Always a booster. It is important to remember that once an individual has been identified as a booster, he or she retains that status forever.

If you have questions whether you are considered a booster of Covenant Athletics or if you have questions about what you may or may not do as a booster, please feel free to contact the Compliance Office at [email protected].

What is an extra benefit?

Fans and boosters may not provide anything to prospects or currently enrolled student-athletes (or their families) without prior approval from the Compliance Office. If a student-athlete and/or his or her family accepts any benefits of special consideration (e.g., transportation, clothing, money, meals, etc.) based on his or her athletic skill, the student-athlete will lose his or her eligibility and Covenant will be subject to NCAA penalties.

Extra benefits can include, but, are not limited to:

• Money, gifts, clothing, tickets for entertainment, haircut, and use of a car.• Free or reduced-cost room or board anywhere.• Free or reduced-cost merchandise or services.• Use of Athletics Department copy/fax machines, long distance telephone services or free use of a cell phone.• Typing or editing reports, papers, letters, etc. for a student-athlete.• A loan of money or the consigning of a note to arrange a loan.• The sale or trade of complimentary admissions for merchandise, services or debt repayment.• The sale or trade of ANY items a student-athlete has received for his or her participation in athletics (e.g., gear, clothing, awards).This list is not exhaustive.
