The Marshall University tennis team will enter the 2012 spring season with an ITA National Ranking of 54 following a successful 2010-11 campaign that saw the squad fi nish with an im-pressive 18-6 overall record, and a solid fall season that included two doubles championships by Dominika Zaprazna and Maria Voscekova at the Kitty Harrison and Wake Forest Invitationals.

The Slovakian duo enters the spring with an ITA National Doubles Ranking of 35, and will be looking to be the third consecutive Thundering Herd tandem to compete at the NCAA National Championships.

The Herd are also pleased to welcome back senior Kristina Koprcina, junior Kara Kucin, and sophomore Karli Timko to the team, and newcomers Ellie Ball and Kia Broomfi eld will be this year’s freshmen looking to make a mark.

Ball already got her Marshall career off to a good start in the fall, winning her respective singles and doubles fl ights at the Wake Forest Invitational. Broomfi eld arrived over Christmas, and will look to break into the team and make an immediate impact this spring.

2012 Season Preview2012 Season Preview

This season John Mercer begins his 26th year coaching at the NCAA Division I level and his tenth at the helm of the Thundering Herd tennis team. Mercer is coming off an impressive 2010-11 campaign that saw him coach Marshall to an impressive 18-6 record and a peak of No. 34 in the ITA national rankings. It was a year that also saw him lead the doubles duo of Dominika Zaprazna and Michaela Kissell to an undefeated regular season and an NCAA Tournament berth. Mercer has an overall record of 162-73 as Marshall head coach that is good for a .689 winning percentage, and with each win he obtains, Mercer will continue to add to his total as the win-ningest coach in Marshall tennis history.

Prior to last season, Mercer and the Herd embarked on a 2009-10 campaign that rewrote the Marshall record books. The team fi n-ished the season with an overall mark of 19-7, while hitting its highest national ranking in program history at No. 28. Marshall's 11-0 record to begin the 2010 season was the best start in program history, and Mercer guided the Herd to the C-USA title match and 2011 National Team Indoor Championships that year. Mercer also saw two of his players (Michaela Kissell and Dominika Zaprazna) compete in the NCAA Tournament.

Mercer took over the head coaching duties in 2003 and led the team to a 19-8 record in his fi rst season and a school best 22-5 mark in 2004. Marshall took home the Mid-American Conference regular season and tournament championships in both 2003 and 2004, earning Mercer the MAC Coach of the Year award for both seasons. In the 2005 season, Mercer guided the Thundering Herd to its fourth consecutive MAC Tournament Title and NCAA appearance as the squad fi nished 19-8, and he was named the ITA East Region Head Coach of the Year.

Before taking on the role of head coach, Mercer became the assistant coach at Marshall in 1994-95, joining his wife Laurie, the head coach at the time. While an assistant, Mercer helped build the program into a perennial MAC power and a force to be reckoned with on the national scene. During his time as the assistant, Mercer helped lead Marshall to its fi rst ever Southern Conference regular season and tournament championship in 1997.

After the team switched to the Mid-American Conference in 1998, Marshall was able to capture its fi rst conference regular season championship in 2000 and its fi rst tournament championship in 2002. In 2001, Mercer was named ITA East Region assistant coach of the year and was one of eight fi nalists for the national award.

Mercer played his collegiate tennis at Penn State University, where he was an Academic All-Conference selection. He graduated from Penn State in 1985 and served the next season as the Nittany Lion's assistant men's coach.

Mercer is married to the former Laurie Johnson and has three children: daughter Cassie, born February 25, 1996, son John Jer-emiah, born July 16, 2000, and son Andrew Jacob, born June 7, 2005.

Kelcy McKenna arrives at Marshall University following a successful collegiate career at Arizona State Uni-versity. McKenna will serve as the assistant to head coach John Mercer, and will look to impart her tennis experience, knowledge, and know-how upon the Thundering Herd tennis team.

While a student-athlete at Arizona State, McKenna found immense success in the Sun Devil's tennis pro-gram. She was a four-year letterwinner who achieved ITA All-American status in singles and doubles, and won multiple tournaments including the 2009 ITA Riviera All-American Tournament, the 2010 Thunderbird, and the 2010 Cal Nike Invitational.

McKenna achieved career high ITF rankings of #3 in singles and #16 in doubles, and participated in the NCAA Tournament a total of three times. She also garnered a #1 USTA ranking in singles and doubles for the Pacifi c Northwest region of the Women's Open Division in 2010, was a PAC-10 First-Team All Conference selection in 2009 and 2011, and was a nominee for NCAA Woman of the Year in 2011.

After marking its 15-year milestone during the 2009-10 season, Conference USA is still going strong. From the beginning, dedication to excellence has been the league's guiding principle and remains today a common thread for a promising future. C-USA is home to 12 nationally prominent, tradition-rich members in East Carolina, Houston, Marshall, Memphis, Rice, SMU, Southern Miss, Tulane, Tulsa, UAB, UCF and UTEP. This combination enhances men's and women's programs that are immersed in athletic success and academic prowess. Together, we are committed to excellence, integrity and leadership in athletics, academics and in our communities.

All C-USA institutions sponsor Division I-A football, along with several other men's and women's athletic programs, many of which compete regularly for NCAA Championships. C-USA sponsors competition in 20 sports - nine for men (baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, soccer, tennis and indoor and outdoor track and fi eld) and 11 for women (basketball, cross country, golf, rowing, softball, soccer, swimming and diving, tennis, indoor and outdoor track and fi eld and volleyball).

The league sponsors numerous academic awards, including the Commissioner's Honor Roll and the Commissioner's Academic Medal, indica-tive of outstanding achievement in the classroom. C-USA annually awards 12 postgraduate scholarships, along with the Sport Academic Award, Scholar Athletes of the Year and the Institutional Academic Excellence Award. Conference USA also added a Spirit of Service Award, recogniz-ing student-athletes three times a year for a combination of signifi cant community service efforts, good academic standing and participation in their elected sport.

SUCCESS OFF THE FIELDC-USA institutions are among the nation’s best in academic performance among student-athletes, bolstered by the fact that student-athletes at league schools have a higher graduation rate than the general student population. Among C-USA’s 5,000 student-athletes, there are cham-pions off the playing fi eld as well. In 15 years, 153 student-athletes earned national ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America honors, while 541 were named All-District. In addition, more than 20,000 student-athletes have been named to the Commissioner’s Honor Roll or received the Commissioner’s Academic Medal, indicative of outstanding achievement in the classroom.

C-USA IN THE COMMUNITYThe conference’s footprint is concentrated with 12 members in nine states and a combined area population of nearly 17 million. More than 1.1 million living alumni represent C-USA schools across the nation. With a renewed commitment to community involvement, the conference has begun development of several initiatives to maintain strong ties in C-USA cities, as well as with fans and alumni across the country. C-USA schools also place a priority on giving back to their communities through volunteer service with local and national organizations.

GOVERNANCEAlong with the ACC, Big East, Big Ten, Big 12, Pac-10 and SEC, Conference USA is one of the seven conferences having signifi cant representation in the NCAA governance structure. The Presidents of the member institutions serve as the league’s Board of Directors.

A PROUD HISTORY; A PROMISING FUTUREConference USA was formed in 1995 and quickly emerged as one of the nation’s top conferences. The conference unveiled its name, logo and commissioner on April 24, 1995 in Chicago. The league’s charter members included Charlotte, Cincinnati, DePaul, Houston, Louisville, Mar-quette, Memphis, Saint Louis, Southern Miss, Tulane, UAB and USF. Eleven of the institutions began athletic participation in 1995, while Houston joined competition in the fall of 1996. The league’s headquarters were established in Chicago and after nine years, relocated to the current offi ce in Irving, Texas. Britton Banowsky was named Commissioner in October 2002, succeeding Mike Slive, the league’s fi rst commissioner.

C-USA added East Carolina (September, 1996) and the United States Military Academy (March, 1997) as football members. ECU began league competition in 1997; Army in 1998 and UAB began football play in 1999. The league added TCU and ECU (1999) for all sports and they began competition in 2001. USF started C-USA football in 2003. After celebrating its 10th Anniversary during the 2004-05 season, C-USA began a new chapter in 2005-06 when its current membership came together to form the new look of the league. Since its formation, C-USA has established a strong foundation, an identity and a history that refl ects the league’s national presence. Fifteen years of remarkable history has reinforced the league’s position in collegiate athletics, setting the course for the next decade and beyond.
