2011 SEASON REVIEW

The Oklahoma State Cowgirl tennis team finished off the 2011 season after unseating No. 73 Missouri in the opening round of the Big 12 Conference tournament to advance to the second round for the sixth-straight season. Sophomore Malika Rose sealed the win after picking up a three-set win over Maria Christensen in the last match of the day. The Cowgirls faced a stiff challenge in their next dual and fell to top-seeded Baylor 4-2 to finish off the year. Rose and fresh-man Kanyapat Narattana both earned points for OSU in the defeat. Narattana paired up with senior Nataliya Shatkovs-kaya to take their match over No. 59 Nina Secerbegovic and Karolina Fililpiak in doubles play, but the Cowgirls couldn’t overcome losses at the top three singles spots.

Rose finished the season with a team-best 16-6 dual record. During the season, she rolled off an 11-match win streak

spanning nearly two months of action. Rose saw time at the third, fourth, fifth and sixth spots in the Cowgirl rotation, go-ing 6-0 in dual play from the No. 5 position. Narattana made her mark on the squad in her first collegiate season with a 21-13 overall record, including a team-high nine conference wins, all from the No. 5 spot.

Shatkovskaya, the Cowgirls’ No. 1 in both singles and doubles play, finished 10-25 in solo action. She leaves the OSU pro-gram after an 8-6 dual record with doubles partner Narattana and a 14-11 overall record in 2011. The tandem posted wins over five ranked opponents and advanced to the finals in the Lakewood Ranch Classic in fall action. The pair finished off the regular season with a win over No. 40 Ana-Maria Constan-tinescu and Alice Radu when the Cowgirls hosted in-state rival Oklahoma.

No. 2 Sasha Belova posted five dual wins in her final season for OSU, including three victories in Big 12 play. C.C. Sardinha worked her way to a 12-11 tally in dual play splitting time at the No. 3 and No. 4 spots. She took down No. 101 Dominique Harmah of Rice in comeback fashion. Sardinha dropped the first set 4-6 before rallying 6-3, 6-4 to take the win from a ranked opponent.

Senior Sarah Meghoufel played in the sixth position for OSU and rolled off a 19-18 record in her final season. Meghoufel was honored with the ITA Central Region’s Arthur Ashe Lead-ership and Sportsmanship Award, along with being selected to the Big 12 Academic All-Conference team. She was joined by Shatkovskaya, Rose and Leyla Simmons in being recog-nized by the conference for their stellar performances in the classroom.

Simmons and freshman Allison Burckhartt both saw time in the sixth position, as well as competing in the fall for the Cowgirls. The tandem of Burckhartt and Simmons joined forces to advance to the doubles finals at the Air Force Invita-tional on Oct. 3. Junior Alisa Buslaieva contributed four wins during the fall slate of competition.

The team notched eight total dual wins, including conference victories over Iowa State, Colorado, Kansas and No. 73 Mis-souri. The squad finished with an 8-16 mark and earned a No. 57 ranking in the Feb. 3 polls.

Head coach Chris Young, in his second season at the helm of the Cowgirls, was recognized with the USTA/ITA Campus and Community Outreach Award for the Missouri Valley section. He was honored for promoting tennis in the Stillwater area, particularly with the “Quickstart” program encouraging area youth to learn the game.

The Cowgirls bring a fairly young team into the 2012 spring season. OSU will be led by juniors Malika Rose, C.C. Sardinha and Leyla Simmons. The Cowgirls also return sophomores Kanyapat Narattana and Allison Burckhartt.

However, two of the Cowgirls’ biggest stars during the 2011 fall season were newcomers: freshmen Meghan Blevins and Mary Jeremiah. They each tied for the team-lead in singles victories during the fall with seven. Blevins made it to the quarterfinal round of two of three tournaments she competed in during the fall. Jeremiah reeled off three-straight victories at the USTA/ITA Central Region Championship to make it to the semifinal match of the consolation bracket.

Sardinha also picked up seven singles victories during the fall for OSU, three of which came in the final tournament of the fall, the Lakewood Ranch Classic. After a defeat in the opening round, Sardinha won three-straight, including the consolation final.

Narattana, Rose and Simmons competed during fall singles competition as well, and all six players faced at least one ranked opponent, providing opportunities in the fall to continue to improve before dual competition.

The Cowgirls compiled a combined record of 20-16 in doubles play during fall competition. The promising duo of freshmen Blevins and Jeremiah notched a team-high seven doubles victories, including four consecutive wins to begin the USTA/ITA Central Region Championship before they were defeated in a tightly contested, 9-8 (5) match in the final round.

The pairing of Narattana and Rose also proved to be a successful one, as they combined to go 6-2 in fall doubles competition. The pair won three-straight to open up the USTA/ITA Central Region Championship and the Baylor HEB Invitational before losing in the semifinal round of those tournaments.

The combo of Sardinha and Simmons, which won five matches during the fall, won four in a row at the Baylor HEB invitational to win the consolation final match.

Head coach Chris Young enters his third season at the helm of the Cowgirl tennis program. Young has enjoyed success at his stops prior to OSU, and with assistant coach Jamea Jackson and a roster of young and talented players, the present and future looks promising for the Cowgirls.

2011 FALL REVIEW; 2012 PREVIEW

6 OKLAHOMA STATE TENNIS

Chris Young is entering his third as the head coach of the Oklahoma State women’s tennis program. After spending five years as the Wichita State Director of Tennis, Young returned two seasons ago to his home state where he competed as a collegian and began his coaching career.

A native of Norman, Okla., Young has compiled a career record of 211-121, directing the OSU women and the men’s and women’s programs at both Wichita State and his alma mater, Oklahoma Christian.

The 2011 Cowgirls finished the season with an 8-16 record; however, the team made it to the quarterfinals of the Big 12 Championship for the second straight year, edging out Missouri before eventually losing to top-seeded Baylor.

Young oversaw four Academic All-Big 12 selections in 2011, as well as the ITA Arthur Ashe Leadership & Sportsmanship Award recipient, Sarah Meghoufel. He also helped the doubles tandem of Kanyapat Narattana and Nataliya Shatkovskaya reach No. 80 in the final rankings of the season.

In his first year at OSU, Young led the Cowgirls to a 13-10 finish, their best in three years, and picked up his milestone 200th career coaching win.

Young’s coaching prowess was evident as his 2010 Cowgirls reached the quarterfinal of the Big 12 Championship and received several individual accolades. His athletes earned a Big 12 Newcomer of the Year award, a No. 4 singles Big 12 co-championship and a doubles spot on the all-conference team.

He also earned his second USTA/ITA Campus and Community Outreach Award in 2010, as he was honored for his work in promoting tennis to the community.

During his time in Wichita, Young led the women’s squad to a 94-38 mark, including a 33-6 ledger in Missouri Valley Conference play. A three-time conference coach of the year selection, Young guided the Shockers to league crowns in 2006, 2007 and 2009. Those seasons also resulted in the first three NCAA Tournament appearances in school history.

Young took a program that had never held a national ranking or defeated a ranked opponent and transformed the Shockers into a squad that was ranked for 43-straight weeks and defeated more than 20 ranked opponents under his direction.

The 2008-09 campaign saw Young’s squad post a 21-6 mark and capture its third league title in four seasons. Individually, his players won 65 of their 68 individual matches in MVC action.

The fruits of his off-court work began to show as well as the Shockers finished the year ranked in the top 10 nationally in attendance.

The Shockers narrowly missed their third-straight conference title in 2008, finishing the year with a 16-8 mark and a runner-up finish at the MVC Tournament.

Young’s third season at WSU proved to be one for the history books as his charges produced a school-record 27-3 mark and became the first MVC squad to win an NCAA

Tournament match. The Shockers knocked off 25th-ranked South Carolina in the first round to secure the school’s first NCAA victory. Additionally, the Shockers climbed to No. 16 in the national rankings, making them the highest ranked team in the history of the MVC.

Five Shockers earned all-conference honors, including Madina Rakhim, who finished the year with a 29-2 mark at the No. 1 singles position. The Shockers were dominant up and down their lineup, finishing with a 66-1 record in their individual conference matches.

For his efforts, Young was named the ITA Central Region Coach of the Year. The 2007 campaign also saw him earn the USTA/ITA National Award for Community Service.

The 2004-05 campaign, WSU’s first under Young, resulted

in immediate progress. The Shockers finished with a 13-13 mark, giving them their highest win total in seven years and providing an indicator of the program’s bright future.

Young produced 17 all-conference singles players, nine all-league doubles performers. His squads also emphasized their work in the classroom with 16 Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athletes dotting his rosters.

From 2005-08, Young also steered the Shocker men’s program and tallied a 58-38 record. His 2008 squad recorded 19 wins and achieved the program’s highest ranking in 10 years. Individually, he coached nine all-conference singles players, two all-league doubles teams and produced two MVC Scholar-Athlete selections.

Prior to taking over the Shocker program, Young worked as the assistant men’s and women’s coach at Oklahoma Christian University, including a stint as the interim head coach for both programs in 2002.

He took charge of the women’s program in 2003 before adding the OC men’s head coaching position to his list of duties the following year. The 2003 season also resulted in a national championship on the men’s side.

During his time at Oklahoma Christian, the Eagles had 20 players receive NAIA All-America honors, including eight with Young as head coach.

The 2004 season saw Young garner both the men’s and women’s conference coach of the year honors in addition to his recognition as the NAIA Region VI Women’s Coach of the Year.

Young’s coaching career got underway in 1999 in Ardmore, Okla., where he served as a teaching pro and assistant coach at Ardmore High School.

As a player, Young earned three letters from Oklahoma Christian and helped the Eagles to top-five national finishes in each of his three seasons.

A 2000 graduate of Oklahoma Christian, Young and his wife, Sarah, have two children, Braden and Kelsy.
