PREVIEW COACHING STAFF THE TRIBE HISTORYSeniors Keziel Juneau and Richard Wardell lead an experienced Tribe line-up in 2009-10. Juneau was a first-team all-league and all-state selection last season as a junior and finished the year ranked No. 103 nationally in singles.

The College won back-to-back na-tional championships in 1947 and 1948, becoming one of only five schools with multiple NCAA crowns in men’s tennis.

The Tribe returns three All-CAA players from last season’s team that won 16 dual matches for a school-record third straight season and ad-vanced to the CAA semifinals.

Peter Daub enters his 17th season at the helm of W&M, producing 238 victories during his tenure. He is just one win shy of 450 for his career. He will be assisted by first-year coaches Jesse Tarr and Brandon Byrd.

CHAMPIONSHIP-CALIBER PROGRAM Over the last several seasons, the William and Mary men’s tennis program has enjoyed a large amount of success. In 2005, the Tribe won its third CAA crown. Over each of the last three sea-sons, the Tribe has won 16 dual matches, marking the first time in school history W&M accomplished the feat. During the fall of 2006, Colin O’Brien and Alex Cojanu won the ITA Mideast Region Doubles Championship. The College went on to enjoy one of the best seasons in school history during the 2007 spring season. The Tribe earned its highest ITA Ranking in school history at No. 31 and garnered an at-large spot in the 2007 NCAA Tournament. Following its at-large berth in the NCAA Tournament in 2007, the Tribe has participated in the post-season 10 times in school history. The 2008 campaign saw the Tribe defeat No. 34-ranked Notre Dame for the first time in 30 years and advance to the CAA Cham-pionship match for the sixth time since 1999. Alex Cojanu became the first Tribe player to be named the AEF Tribe Club Male Senior Athlete of the Year for the College. Recently, the Tribe has sent players to the NCAA Individu-al Championships. In 2007, Alex Cojanu and Colin O’Brien ad-vanced to the second round of the doubles championship. A year later, W&M sent a singles player and a doubles team to the cham-pionships for the first time in over 60 years. Cojanu competed in the singles championship, while both he and Juneau played in the doubles event.

TRIBE OFF THE COURT• During their careers, W&M men’s tennis players travel exten-sively throughout the country for individual tournaments and team matches.

• In 2008-09, the Tribe enjoyed trips to Athens, Georgia; La Jolla, California; Malibu, California; and Montgomery, Alabama.

• In the past four years alone, the Tribe has had extended stays in Hawaii, the Boston area, Florida, California, Tennessee, Kentucky, Texas and Idaho.

• In the spring of 2004, W&M spent nearly a week in sunny Hawaii and California, followed by three days in the snow-capped moun-tains of Idaho.

FRIENDS OF WILLIAM & MARY TENNIS The primary purpose of “Friends of William and Mary Men’s Tennis” is to raise funds to support the men’s tennis program. Be a part of the Tribe’s success! “The Friends of William & Mary Tennis” have enabled us to reach standards, and achieve a travel schedule that has put us into position to compete at the national level,” head coach Pe-ter Daub said. “Through the generous support of many parents, alumni, and Williamsburg supporters, we are able to give these student-athletes an experience that they will cherish for a lifetime, through our travel and different cultures we’ll visit.” For more information about how you can help support the W&M men’s tennis team, please contact William and Mary’s head men’s tennis coach Peter Daub by phone at (757) 221-3383 or by e-mail at [email protected].

Alex Cojanu was the 2008 AEF Tribe Club Senior Male Athlete of the Year. He advanced to the NCAA individual championships during each of his final two seasons with the Col-lege.

Dedicated to excellence in academics and athletics, the Col-lege of William and Mary in historic Colonial Williamsburg is proud to offer one of the finest athletic facilities in the country—the Mc-Cormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center. Located on South Henry Street adjacent to the graduate housing complex, the McCormack-Na-gelsen Tennis Center, which opened in 1995, boasts impeccable tennis facilities and houses the Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s Women’s Tennis Hall of Fame. The courts at the Tennis Center were resurfaced during the summer of 2007. The facility was made possible through a generous gift from Mark H. McCormack, a 1951 graduate of William and Mary, and his wife, former world-class tennis professional Betsy Nagelsen. As the former chairman, president and chief executive officer of International Management Group, McCormack was widely recog-nized as the founder of the sports marketing industry. The McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center features six indoor tennis courts using the GreenSet GrandPrix Surface (rubberized base under color coat), air conditioning and indirect lighting at a competitive level. The facility also includes member and team locker rooms, several spacious lobbies and spectator viewing that boasts 362 stadium seats as well as a mezzanine seating area. In addition, the ITA and Rolex generously donated a state-of-the-art electronic scoreboard. The Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s Women’s Tennis Hall of Fame contains a collection of artifacts and records pertaining to collegiate women’s tennis, and enshrines former players, coaches and contributors that have impacted the sport. The Hall of Fame also functions as a library, archive and research center for intercol-legiate women’s tennis.

DIRECTIONS TO MCCORMACK-NAGELSEN TENNIS CENTER

From All Directions: Take I-64 to Exit 242A (Route 199 West). At second stoplight turn right on South Henry Street (Route 132 North). After passing the cemetery, turn right into the first driveway. Follow the street around to the right.

One of the newest athletics venues at the College of William and Mary, the Busch Courts tennis complex opened in September of 2001. It is the outdoor home of the Tribe tennis squads. The complex features eight individual hard court surfaces. Each court features California Corners, a unique design that in-cludes quarter fences that run along the sidelines to allow for unin-terrupted play. There is stadium seating for approximately 500 people at Busch Courts, and there is also a state-of-the-art lighting system to accommodate night matches. The facility received an upgrade in 2007. During the summer months, the courts at the complex were resurfaced along with the courts at the McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center.

The William and Mary men’s tennis team will look to continue its string of successful seasons and once again position itself for a spot in the NCAA Tournament. Head coach Pe-ter Daub is looking for his players to take own-ership of the team in 2009-10 and generate the team’s mantra of ‘Success is an Attitude.’ Following last season’s 16-win campaign, the College has put together the first stretch of three seasons with 16 or more dual-match wins in school history. With an experienced group that includes four returning singles start-ers and five returning doubles starters, the Green and Gold will look to return to the NCAA Team Tournament and also send individuals to both the NCAA Singles and Doubles Champi-onships. “I am trying to have the players empower themselves for growth,” Daub said. “The play-ers will choose the path they want to go down in order for us to obtain greatness. The play-ers will make the choice about how hard they will work and how accountable they will be in striving for excellence. The players will deter-mine their ability to scrap, claw, and fight men-tally, emotionally and physically during each match.” The Tribe will be led by a pair of seniors in Keziel Juneau and Richard Wardell, who have a chance to become the winningest se-nior class in William and Mary history. The duo have helped the College to 48 dual-match wins over its first three seasons, including an NCAA Tournament appearance in 2007. Juneau is the Tribe’s top singles players, finishing last season ranked No. 103 nation-ally. He was ranked No. 61 nationally to start the 2009 fall season. Juneau was a First-Team All-CAA selection in both singles and doubles a season ago. He was 19-10 at the No. 1 sin-gles slot in 2009. “Keziel has a tremendous amount of ath-letic ability and was a true leader last year at the No. 1 position,” Daub said. “ I look for him to push towards an NCAA bid and also to lead our team into the NCAA Tournament.” Wardell battled injuries for most of his junior campaign, but returned to make an im-

pact in the Green and Gold lineup during the CAA Tournament. In total, Wardell tallied nine singles victories as a junior and has been a constant in the lineup over his Tribe career. “Richard is the three-time ITA-All-Aca-demic selection who has constantly pushed himself and pushed everybody else on the team toward greatness,” Daub said. “I look for him to be a vocal leader and to provide our doubles with a great push toward excellence.” Three other players return to the fold with a significant amount of experience from last season. Juniors Sebastien Vidal and Varun Pandit as well as sophomore Ilja Orre each played singles and doubles throughout the dual-match campaign and were a part of the Tribe’s CAA lineup as well. Over the last two seasons, Vidal has been a fixture in the Tribe lineup. He enjoyed a breakout season in 2008-09, amassing a 22-10 singles ledger, including 16 dual matches victories playing at the No. 2, No. 3 and No. 4 slot. He garnered Second-Team All-CAA hon-ors in singles a season ago, while also being honored as a first team all-league choice in doubles. Vidal spent the summer playing with the Guatemalan Davis Cup team for the third straight season. “Sebastien came into his own last year and was a force at No. 1 doubles, and with his Davis Cup experience this summer, and the mental and physical growth that has taken place, he will push for a spot in the top of our lineup,” Daub said. After battling injuries during his first two seasons, Pandit started to show his abilities toward the latter part of the 2009 spring sea-son. In total, Pandit won six dual matches in singles competition, including a straight sets win in the College’s CAA Quarterfinal triumph over James Madison. “Varun has been frustrated with injuries in his first two years, and at this time appears to be injury-free, which could lead to him having a major impact on our lineup,” Daub said. “He has the natural ability and athletic skills to be a top-6 player.” As a freshman, Ilja Orre was a mainstay

in the Green and Gold lineup, tallying 13 dual-match singles victories. He also provided the College with impressive play in doubles on his way to earning Third-Team All-CAA honors in pairs competition. It total, Orre notched 14 singles wins and 17 doubles victories during his first campaign with the Tribe. “Ilja is one of our hardest workers and def-initely committed to improving his game every day in practice,” Daub said. “His commitment is a value to all his teammates as a model for each of them to attain. His quickness will help in our doubles this year.” Along with the three-member freshman class, the College welcomes back a pair of redshirt players from last season in Daniel Mihalov and Jacob Braig. Mihalov was an all-state player at Deerfield High School in Illinois, while Braig transferred to the College after an impressive rookie season at Christopher New-port. Braig helped the Captains to a No. 24 ranking nationally and the program’s first berth in the NCAA Tournament. The freshman trio of Anton Andersson, Adrian Vodislav and Jamie Whiteford has the chance to make an immediate impact on the Tribe lineup. Andersson was ranked as high as No. 211 in the ITF Combined Junior World Rankings and was ranked No. 7 in Sweden. In 2007, Andersson won three ITF Junior titles. Along with his exceptional singles play, Ander-sson has impressive doubles credentials as well. In 2008, he won the U21 Swedish Na-tional Doubles Championship. Vodislav earned points toward the South African Airways ATP World Singles Rankings last season and was ranked as high as No. 1529 in the world. He won a pair of Romanian National Doubles Championships in 2004 and 2007 and was ranked No. 21 in the world in the junior rankings in 2003. Whiteford trained last season at the Uni-versity of Bath in England. He was ranked as high as No. 368 in the ITF Junior Combined World Rankings. He won the Bank of Bermu-da Foundation ITF Junior Circuit Tournament Singles Championship in 2007, while also ad-vancing the finals of the event.

BACK-TO-BACK-TO-BACK The Tribe tallied 16 dual-match victories in 2009 and coupled with the 16 wins in both 2007 and 2008, W&M produced back-to-back-to-back 16-win seasons. It marked the first time in school history that the Tribe has produced three straight seasons of 16 or more victories. In fact, of the 11 seasons in which the Tribe has won 16 or more dual matches, nine have come under the direction of head coach Peter Daub.

RECORD SETTING PERFORMANCE W&M garnered a record-setting haul of CAA all-league honors in 2009. Four Green and Gold singles players and a pair of Tribe doubles team received honors, marking the most All-CAA awards won in a single season by W&M in school history. Junior Keziel Juneau highlighted the Tribe ef-fort earning First-Team All-CAA accolades in both singles and doubles. Juneau was joined on the doubles first team by sophomore Sebastien Vidal. Vidal also received Second-Team All-CAA distinc-tion in singles. Seniors Marwan Ramadan and Dominic Pagon were both named to the All-CAA third team in singles, receiving the league honor in individual play for the first time in their careers. For the second straight season, Pagon also earned All-CAA accolades in doubles. He and freshman Ilja Orre were named to the All-CAA third team in doubles action.

JUNEAU RANKED NATIONALLY Keziel Juneau garnered a career-best national ranking in the final Campbell’s ITA National Rankings. Juneau, who spent four of the last five weeks in the national singles rankings, moved into the No. 103 spot in the final standings. He was one of only two Colonial Athletic Association players in the national singles rankings. As a team, the Tribe finished the year ranked No. 75 nationally. Juneau was a First-Team All-CAA honoree in both singles and doubles as a junior. He led the College in singles and doubles victories with 23 and 24, respectively. The Repentigny, Quebec native tallied 19 wins at the No. 1 singles slot during the dual-match season. He knocked off the highest ranked opponent of his career in Alexey Tsyrenov of Auburn, who finished the year ranked No. 41 nationally, during the teams’ dual match at the Blue Gray Classic.

SUCCESS AT THE PACIFIC COAST DOUBLES CHAMPIONSHIP Keziel Juneau and Sebastien Vidal won five straight matches to claim the consolation bracket title at the historic and prestigious Pacific Coast Doubles Championship in March. The 120th an-nual doubles tournament included teams from some of the top collegiate teams in the country like No. 1 Stanford, No. 8 USC and No. 13 UCLA as well as individuals of various ages from across the country. The Pacific Coast Doubles Championship is the second-oldest tennis event in the United States and has a rich tournament history. First held in 1890 at The Hotel Del Monte in Monterey, California, the event was created to promote the sale of real estate on the Monterey peninsula. The original concept pitted the best players from the East versus those from the West. This coast to coast rivalry was the inspiration for the Davis Cup. Past Winners include Jack Kramer, Ted Schro-eder, Bobby Riggs, Pancho Segura, Don Budge, Tony Trabert, Stan Smith, Bob Lutz, Arthur Ashe, Dennis Ralston, John McEnroe and many others world-class champions. Juneau and Vidal knocked off three seeded teams on their way to the title and in the process earned CAA Doubles Team of the Week honors. Along with the success of its top pairing, W&M saw two of its other doubles squads advanced to the main draw round of 16 at the event. Dominic Pagon and Ilja Orre won three straight matches, before falling to the No. 4-seeded team in the country. Tribe associate head coach Marcos Asse and Varun Pandit also earned a berth in the round of 16 as well.

GREEN AND GOLD CLAIMS TRIBE NATIONAL INDOOR INVITATIONAL CROWN W&M tallied a pair of victories over nationally ranked opponents to win the Tribe National In-door Invite. The Green and Gold disposed of No. 65 BYU, 5-2, in the opening round. The College followed that performance with a 4-3 title winning victory over No. 60 Clemson in a triumph clinched by Marwan Ramadan. The wins also bumped the Tribe’s early season record to 9-2, which marked the Green and Gold’s best start to a season since 1997.

The College of William and Mary’s 1946-47 men’s tennis team posted the finest record in Tribe history when it claimed the team title at the National Intercolle-giate Tournament in Los Angeles, in June of 1947. The netters, coached by Dr. Sharvey G. Umbeck, tallied 10 points to clinch first-place honors. Leading the way for the Tribe was Gardner Larned, who won the national singles title that same year by defeating Vic Seixas of North Carolina 6-3, 9-11, 4-6, 6-3, 6-1. Other members of the 1947 team included Tut Bartzen, Fred Kovaleski, Bob Doll, Bren Macken, Howe Atwater, Lyman Chen-nault, Dick Randell, Jim Macken, George Fricke, Bill Ozenberger and Bob Galloway. In 1948, Kovelski and team captain Bartzen, re-turning as the nation’s fourth-and fifth-ranked players, guided the Tribe to its second-straight national team title. In addition, the duo captured the national doubles championship, a feat that has yet to be repeated in Wil-liam and Mary men’s tennis history.

W&M Men’s Tennis National Championships

1947 Team Gardner Larned (singles)1948 Team Bernard Bartzen/Frank Kovaleski (doubles)

The 1947 men’s tennis team (above) was the first team in W&M history to win an NCAA Championship. In 1948 (below) the Tribe repeated that achievement. Included in the Tribe’s succes, beginning in 1945 was an NCAA-record winning streak of 82-straight dual matches that lasted un-til the 1950 season. The Green and Gold were also NCAA runner up in 1946 and finished third at the national event in 1949.

William and Mary lost a favorite son on May 16, 2003, with the death of Mark Hume McCormack, a 1951 graduate of the College. McCormack had been in coma since January after suffering a heart attack. Named by ESPN as one of the century’s most influential people in the business of sport, he revolutionized the world of sports marketing with the founding of International Management Group (IMG). A devoted and dedicated supporter of Tribe athletics, he and his wife, Bet-sy Nagelsen founded W&M’s McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center, endowed a tennis scholarship and were continuing sponsors of the ITA Women’s Tennis Hall of Fame. Also a member of W&M’s Board of Visitors, McCormack chaired the College’s fund-raising campaign in 1993 that raised $153 million and was the honorary chair of a campaign for William and Mary, which raised over $500 million for the College.

WILLIAM & MARY REFLECTS ON THE LIFE OF MARK MCCORMACK

“Mark McCormack was truly an honored son of the College. Few individuals in the course of their lifetime have the chance to see and feel and know the influence they have had on the quality and character of an institution. Mark’s influence on William and Mary can be seen not only in the physical buildings he made possible by his generosity, but in the highest level of excellence he expected from his alma mater and from those of us fortunate enough to call him a friend.” - Former W&M President Timothy J. Sullivan

“Obviously his loss is enormous, to both the athletics department and the gen-eral campus community. He was an icon and a founder of an industry and his generosity touched many within the W&M community. What made Mark even more special was, despite his hectic schedule, that he always found the time to show a special interest in the lives of our student-athletes and took the time to establish lasting personal relationships.” - W&M Director of Athletics Terry Driscoll

“There is no way that I can adequately express the loss of a person like Mark McCormack. He was a devoted contributor of time, resources and talent to the College of William and Mary, and especially to the men’s and women’s tennis programs.” - W&M Director of Special Projects Millie West

“Personally, the area that impressed me most about Mark McCor-mack was that he always wanted to blend in and not stand out. He came to the tennis center he built for our program and would just want to watch, he wasn’t out to call attention to himself or make himself look impressive. Professionally, he was the W&M men’s tennis program. He donated the money and vision to build the best tennis center in the nation, but he also gave the program much more in terms of his time and interest in its progress and success.” - W&M Head Men’s Tennis Coach Peter Daub

“There are not enough words to describe what Mark McCor-mack has done for me and the W&M women’s tennis program. His generosity and support played a direct role in all of our team’s successes. One of the many traits that I truly admired was his ability to treat everyone with respect and make them feel special and appreciated.”

- Former W&M Head Women’s Tennis Coach Brian Kalbas

The College of William and Mary is a public uni-versity located in Williamsburg, Va. Founded in 1693 by Royal Charter issued by King William III and Queen Mary II of England, William and Mary is the second oldest college in the country after Harvard. William and Mary has a long history of liberal arts education and a growing research and science curriculum that demonstrates a strong commitment to undergraduate research. The College, which became a state university in 1906, has been designated a “Public Ivy,” and for nine straight years has been ranked by U.S. News & World Report as the sixth-best public university in the country – and the nation’s top small public university. Also referred to as “the alma mater of a nation,” the College has educated four U.S. Presidents – George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, James Monroe and John Tyler, which is the third most of any college in the coun-try. William and Mary also claims several firsts, including the 1776 creation of Phi Beta Kappa – the country’s first academic honor society – the first honor code of conduct for college students, and the first collegiate law school, es-tablished in 1779. William and Mary is also home to the Sir Christopher Wren Building – the country’s oldest academic building still in use – and the President’s House, the oldest home of a university president still in use.

The College of William and Mary sponsors 23 varsity sports and provides students with a unique and successful balance of athletics and academics. The Tribe Athletics Department finished 99th nationally (as of May 28) in the Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup Standings for 2008-09, a number that ranked second among Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) programs and fourth in the state of Virginia. The Directors’ Cup, which was created by the NACDA and USA Today in 1993-94, is a program that honors institutions maintaining a broad-based program, achieving success in many sports, both men’s and women’s. W&M has placed among the top 100 nationally in 12 of the program’s 16 years, while leading the CAA on seven occasions. W&M has produced more CAA Championships than any program in the league’s history. The College owns 95 league crowns, nearly 40 more than its closest competitor. The Tribe raked in the awards in 2008-09 as well, tallying a combined 197 all-conference honors, 34 All-America honors and six league players of the year. During the 2008-09 season, the Green and Gold produced an overall athletics winning percentage of 68.2, while racking up a combined 888 wins. Along with its accomplishments on the field of play, the Tribe is just as successful in the classroom, epitomizing the term student-athlete. In the NCAA’s inaugural Academic Prog-ress Report in 2005, W&M ranked fourth among Division I teams, which was the highest of any athletic scholarship-granting school and of any public school. Since the inception of the CAA Scholar-Athlete of the Year, W&M has produced 28 honorees, more than any school in the conference. WWW.TRIBEATHLETICS.COM

William and Mary is committed to building and maintaining outstanding facilities for all 23 of its varsity athletic teams. The College has demonstrated this commit-ment by investing approximately $16 million toward the construction and upgrade of its athletics facilities during just the last six years. Among W&M’s recent projects was the construction of the $11 million, 30,000-square foot Jimmye Laycock Foot-ball Center, which was dedicated in June of 2008. This past summer, Busch Field experienced a renovation that included a total revamp of the field, underlying pad, and drainage systems. The renovation created a competition surface that ranks alongside those used at the U.S. National Training Centers in Virginia Beach, Va., Chula Vista, Calif., and that used at last year’s Olympic Games. In 2005, Kaplan Arena received an upgrade with the installation of 6,900-square foot permanent wood floor along with rubberized sports flooring on the open end of the arena to accomodate track and field and other multi-purpose activities. A year earlier, the home of Tribe soccer and lacrosse, Albert-Daly Field was dedicated, providing the programs with a $1 million all-natural grass facility.
