EvanClarkSecond season

UKMC, 2006

What was the highlight of your first season? The highlight of the season had to be our two 4-3 winsover Big Ten opponents Iowa and Michigan State. Bothmatches came down to the last singles match and it doesn’tget anymore exciting than that in college tennis. I wasreally proud of how our team was able to find a way to winin both matches.

What did you learn last year that you can carryinto coaching this season?I learned that a lot of focus needs to be on looking at thebig picture. Things don’t happen over night and everythingis a process, so having confidence in your system and yourplayers is vital in achieving success.

What are your goals for the team this year?My first goal for the team is improving each and every day.If the team is committed to improving every time they stepout on the court, we will achieve a lot of great things thisyear. This team has the opportunity to really improve onlast year’s results and I am really excited to see how highwe can go.

How would you describe Penn State? The atmosphere at Penn State is electric. I have never beenat a school where there is so much support for athleticsfrom the community. Penn State is a very unique school inthat it combines a very high level of academics with a richtradition and success in athletics. This combination is hardto find throughout the country.

The Sarni Tennis Center received the UnitedStates Tennis Association (USTA) Outstanding Tennis Facility Awardin 1999.

WHAT DOES SARNI MEAN FOR PENN STATE TENNIS?It means night matches under the stadium lights. Penn State can now

schedule evening matches, which are a big crowd favorite. Thestadium lighting is state-of-the-art.

• It means tradition. Through a combination of display cases, banners, etc., the Sarni Center will proudly recognize the achievements of pastplayers, NCAA qualifiers, All-BigTen picks, Academic All-Americansand so on.

• It means great visibility on campus. Located in the central part ofcampus and adjacent to the Bigler Sports Fields, Sarni will be ahighly visible facility for the entire Penn State community. Sarni represents a big-time facility ina superb location.

THE MAKING OF THE DREAMVincent and Sandra Sarni started the ball rolling with their gift of

Vincent Sarni, a retired chairman and chief executive officer ofPPG Industries, and his wife are tennis enthusiasts. Neither of theSarnis is a Penn State graduate, although both have been supportersof academic and athletic programs at the University and both havehad children attend Penn State.

In addition to the gift from the Sarni family approximately$500,000 in University funding went into the project, which will alsoprovide for student use of the facility.
