The WU Tennis Courts -- Home of Bearcat Tennis: Willamette University hosts men’sand women’s tennis matches at the Willamette University Tennis Courts each season. Thereare six courts, plus seating for fans.

TheBearcatmen’sandwomen’stennisteamsplayshomematchesattheWillametteUniversityTennis Courts, located on campus. The facilityincludessixcourts,dividedbyseatingforfansinthe center and created on two elevations.WU’ssplit-level facility creates a special atmosphere,enhanced by trees and bushes surrounding thecourts.Whenever theWUTennis Courts aren’tavailable due to the weather, the tennis teamspracticeandplayattheCourthouseTennisClub. JohnLewisField is thehomeof WillametteBearcat baseball. The field is located at Roy S.“Spec” Keene Stadium at Bush’s Pasture Park.The stadium features chairback seating in partof thegrandstand.Overallcapacityis1,000. Willamette’sfootballteamplayshomegamesatMcCulloch Stadium, locatednear JohnLewisField.Thestadiumseatsatotalof 2,400fansandhaslightsfornightgames.Italsofeaturesanewscoreboardwithavideodisplayscreen.There isan athletic training room, along with spaciouslockerroomsandmeetingrooms.

McCulloch Stadium creates the atmosphereof an old stadium, but provides many modernconveniences.IthasaFieldTurf surface. The Charles Bowles Track, located insideMcCulloch Stadium, is an all-weather facilitythat showcasesWillamette’s track and field andcrosscountryteams,whichhostmeetseachyear. Theentire football, track, cross country andbaseball complex is atBush’sPasturePark.Theparkhostscrosscountrymeetsonitswidepathsandisknownforitsartexhibitsandrosegarden. ConeFieldHouseisthehomecourtfortheWillamettemen’s basketball, women’s basketballandvolleyballteams.Thearenaholds2,500fans,withplentyof seatingoneachsideof thecourt.There is a quality sound system, plus tables forofficial timers, scorekeepers and statisticians,alongwithspaceforbroadcastmedia. Cone Field House is part of the Lestle J.Sparks Center, which houses offices for theDepartment of Athletics and the Departmentof ExerciseScience.Thebuildinghasbasketball,handball and racquetball courts, aweight liftingandfitnesscenter,classroomsandlockerrooms. Also connected to the Sparks Center is theWU natatorium, home of Bearcat swimming.The natatorium, with space for 200 fans, alsocanbeseenfromaviewingareainthelobby.

When indoor courts are needed, the Bearcattennis teams play at the Courthouse TennisClub in Salem, Ore.

TheBearcat soccer teams play home gamesat Sparks Field, an artificial turf facility next tothe Sparks Center. The field is equipped withlights for night games and seats 500 spectators.It alsohas seating forboth teams,plusapublicaddress system. The facility is one of the topcollegefieldsintheNorthwest. Close to theSparksCenterandSparksFieldare six outdoor tennis courts. The men’s andwomen’s tennis teams host meets during thespringeachyear. Ontheeastsideof campusistheWillametteSoftball Complex. It includes covered dugouts,battingcages,ascoreboardandbleachers. The WU men’s and women’s golf teamsusually practice at IllaheHills Country Club orCreekside Golf Club. Members of the men’sand women’s rowing teams have their ownboathouseandholdworkoutsontheWillametteRiverindowntownSalem.

Dr. M. Lee Pelton was appointed the 22nd president of WillametteUniversityinJuly,1999.UnderPelton’sleadership,theUniversityhasincreaseditsacademicprofile,successfullyemployingstrategiestoattractthebestfacultyand the brightest students from the state, the nation and the world. Since2001,WillametteUniversity hasbeen ranked a top tier liberal arts collegebyU.S. News and World Report.PresidentPeltonholds adoctorate fromHarvardUniversity and an undergraduate degree in English and psychology fromWichita StateUniversity, where he graduatedmagna cum laude in 1974.Hisarea of academic focus is 19th century British prose and poetry. He served

asdeanof thecollegeatColgateUniversity (1988-91)andDartmouthCollege(1991-98).AtHarvard,hetaught in theEnglishDepartment andwas thedeanof oneof Harvard’s 13undergraduate colleges.HeteachesatWillametteinsubjectsrangingfrom1stcenturyAthenstopost-apartheidSouthAfrica.

MarkMajeski began his tenurewithWillametteUniversity inOctober of 2000, followingfive years as athletic director at theUniversity of California,Santa Cruz and four years as assistant athletic director at Menlo College.Hecurrently serves as thechairmanof theNCAADivision IIImembershipcommittee,whichprovidesoversightof theDivision IIIprovisionalmemberprogram.Majeski previously served on theNCAADivision IIImen’s tenniscommittee,overseeingchampionshipsinthatsport.Aformerbasketball,trackand softball coach, Majeski also worked venue management and operationsfor the 1994 FIFAMen’s SoccerWorld Cup and the 1996 AtlantaOlympic

Games.AtWU,Majeski oversees 20 varsity teams,with theBearcats competing inNCAADivision III,the Northwest Conference and the Intercollegiate Rowing Association. He also is the basketball liaisonbetweentheNWCcoachesandathleticdirectors.Majeskireceivedanundergraduatedegree in journalismfrom Menlo College and a master’s degree in higher education administration from San Jose StateUniversity.HelivesinSalemwithhiswife,Denise,andtheirson,JackHenry,age4.

Head CoachBecky Roberts (9th year)Becky Roberts completed her ninth season as the head women’s tennis coach at Willamette University in 2008-09, as the Bearcats qualified for the NWC Tournament. In 2004-05, Roberts led Willamette to an overallrecord of 10-4 and a fourth place finish in the NWC regular season standings with a 7-4 mark. She was chosenNWC Coach of the Year in 2003-04, when she guided the Bearcats to third place at the NWC Tournament.Roberts graduated with honors from the University of Texas at Austin in 1976 with a bachelor’s degree in Physical Education and Health. She received a master’s degree in Education/Supervision from the Universityof Texas at San Antonio in 1984. She previously coached the Willamette men’s tennis team and also spent 19years as the head men’s and women’s coach at UT-San Antonio in NCAA Division I. Roberts lives in Salem.

Capitol and from being near other federal,state, county, and cityoffices. Salem, the state capital, is the second-largest city in Oregon, with a populationof about 147,000. Salem features a rangeof restaurants, theaters and other culturalopportunities ... many within easy walkingdistance. The Willamette River winds itsway through Salem’s historic downtowndistrictbeforeflowingnorthward. ThePacificCoastisanhourtothewest,theCascadeMountainsare about the samedistance to the east andPortland is just 45minutestothenorth.AlsointheregionaretheColumbiaRivergorgeandMountHood.

NWC Membership

Willamette is amember of theNationalCollegiateAthleticAssociation and competes inDivision III, which has over425membersandisthelargestNCAA division. The collegesinDivision III place a priorityon the overall quality of theeducational experience and on successfulcompletion of each student’s academicprograms. They seek an environment inwhich a student-athlete’s activities with anathleticteamareseenasanintegralpartof hisorhereducationalexperience.Membersin Division III must sponsor at least fivemen’ssportsandfivewomen’ssports.

Athletes in Division III donot receive financial aid relatedto athletic ability. Willametteand other NCAA Division IIImembersencouragestudents toparticipate by maximizing thevariety of athletic opportunities.Primary emphasis is placed on

conference and regional play. Willametteoften sends its teams to California, Idaho,WashingtonandTexasforin-regiongames. NCAA Division III members establishan environment with cultural diversity andgender equity among student-athletes andstaff. InDivisionIII, facultyandstaff careaboutthewell-beingof student-athletes.

NCAA Division III

Northwest Conference Thenineprivatecollegesand universities in Oregonand Washington that formthe Northwest ConferencearebuildingareputationfortheNWCasoneof thetopNCAADivision III leaguesin the nation. TheNWC isnationally competitive in abroadspectrumof sports. Formed in 1926, the NWC is 80 yearsold and is one of the oldest conferencesin the western United States. The NWC’scurrentmembersinOregonareWillamette,GeorgeFox,Linfield,LewisandClark,andPacific.MemberslocatedinWashingtonarePacific Lutheran, Puget Sound, WhitmanandWhitworth. Charter members included Willamette,the College of Idaho, Linfield, Pacific andPuget Sound. Albany College was addedin1931,remainedforsevenyearsandthenreturnedin1949asLewis&ClarkCollege.

Pacific Lutheran joined in1965 and was followed byWhitworth in 1970. TheCollege of Idaho withdrewfromtheconferencein1978.Whitworth dropped out in1984 and returned in 1988.Menlo joined in 2006 as amemberinfootballonly.TheNWCofferschampionships

in18sports(ninemen’sandninewomen’s). The NWC originally sponsored athleticcompetition for men’s sports only, butjoinedforceswiththeWomen’sConferenceof Independent Colleges in 1984 to formtheNorthwestConferenceof IndependentColleges.Thenamewas shortenedback totheoriginalNorthwestConferencein1998. Also in 1998, all nine NWC membersshifted affiliation from the NAIA to theNCAA. Members knew the move wouldfoster equity, sportsmanship and a genuineconcernforallstudent-athletes.

Shannon Palmer of Willamette finishedinsecondplaceinsinglesattheWilson/ITASmallCollegeNorthwestRegionalWomen’sTennisChampionship,hostedbyWillametteinthefallof 2008.PalmerlosttoEliseOttoof Whitman in the championship match.PalmeranddoublespartnerAbbyFunabikiadvancedtothesemifinalsindoubles. Palmer continued her solid play duringthe spring season and received First TeamAll-NorthwestConference recognitions forherefforts.Palmerwas9-8at#1singles,asshe faced the topplayers in theNWC.Sheachieved victories over fellow First TeamAll-NWC selections Cat Goya of Pacificand Sallie Katter of Linfield. Palmer alsoplayed#1doublesfortheBearcats.
