An Atlanta native, Murphy played footballand baseball during his freshman year at

Davidson. His experience has been invaluable as he guides a programwhich is unique in its desire for excellence in both athletics and academicsand has one of the smallest enrollments among NCAA Division I schools.

Reflecting his support of academics, Davidson’s NCAA graduation rateof 91 percent was the highest in Division I in 2001-02, second in 2002-03 witha rate of 97 percent and continues to be above 90 percent each year.

Davidson has claimed the Southern Conference Graduation Rate Awardfor the last nine years, sharing the honor with Wofford in 1999-2000. In addi-tion, Davidson has won the SoCon's Barrett-Bonner Award, given to theschool that places the highest percentage of its student-athletes on theleague’s academic honor roll, 16 times in the award's 18-year history.

“I firmly believe Davidson represents the ideal in college athletics andthink the success of Davidson’s students, both in competition and aftergraduation proves that,” said Murphy. “It’s true that Davidson needs inter-collegiate athletics, but intercollegiate athletics need Davidson even more.”

Since Murphy’s return to Davidson, the Wildcats have pursued severalmajor capital projects, including the creation of the highly-innovative $10million Davidson Scholars Program, and major improvements have beencompleted in Belk Arena and at Smith Field at Richardson Stadium.

The construction of the Belk Artificial Surface Field for field hockey, thenew Alumni Stadium for soccer, Wilson Baseball Park and practice facilityand the football stadium expansion project, which included a state-of-the-art weight room, a new press box and additional permanent seating, allhave come during Murphy's tenure.

The 2004 NACDA Division I-AA/I-AAA Southeast Region AthleticDirector of the Year, Murphy served two terms on the prestigious NCAADivision I Management Council, a policy-making body within the NCAAgovernance structure. He chaired the Division I-AA Governance Committeeand formerly served on the NCAA Division I Business and Finance Cabinet, the Division I Governance Committee and the Division I FinanceCommittee.

A licensed Certified Public Accountant and 1978 graduate of Davidsonwith a degree in economics, he earned a Master of Science degree in man-agement from Georgia Tech in 1979. He worked from 1979-85 as an auditmanager with the international public accounting firm of KPMG PeatMarwick in Atlanta with responsibility for financial statement audits ofpublic and private companies with up to $1 billion in assets.

36 DAVIDSON WILDCATS

HISTORY OF THE WILDCAT

DAVIDSON WILDCATS36

On November 10, 1917, a small cohort of 22football players traveled to Atlanta to representDavidson College against Auburn, one of themost formidable teams in the South. ThePlainsmen had massacred their first four oppo-nents, outscoring teams, 141-6.

According to one account, they were “big, quick, and undefeated” and heavily favored inthe day’s matchup. Davidson was 2-4 and start-ed a line averaging 20 pounds less.

Not surprisingly, Auburn dominated thegame, outgaining the “Red and Black” 240yards to Davidson’s 91 yards. Astoundingly,Davidson pulled together an offensive attackthrough the efforts of running back A.R. “Buck”Flowers and quarterback Henry Spann, deliver-ing a “bewildering array of forward passes.”

Davidson defeated one of the most powerfulteams in the South that day, 21-7, with scrappi-ness that captured the awe and respect ofAtlanta sportswriters. They wrote of the“Wildcats” from Davidson College, whose smallstature and ferocious style proved overwhelm-ing. One account notes that Morgan Blake of theAtlanta Journal remarked of the Davidson team,“No other team ever put together in theseUnited States of the same weight as CoachFetzer’s team could ever get the verdict over theflock of wild men from North Carolina.”

The Davidsonian picked up on the nickname, and it has been used ever since, replacing for-mer, milder references such as “Red and Black,”“Presbyterians” and “Preachers.”

SOUTHERN CONFERENCE

37

A majority of the sports at Davidsoncompete in the Southern Conference, oneof the oldest conferences in the nation, which began its 89th season in 2009. Thesoccer, volleyball, cross country, track andfield, basketball, tennis, wrestling, baseballand golf programs at Davidson all partici-pate in the league.

Only the Big Ten (1896), the MissouriValley (1907) and the Pac-10 (1915) confer-ences have been around longer than theSoCon (1921). The conference currentlyconsists of 12 members in five statesthroughout the Southeast and sponsors 19varsity sports and championships, whichproduce participants for NCAAChampionships.

The Southern Conference was the first“super conference,” with charter member-ship including Alabama, Auburn andNorth Carolina. The SoCon gave birth tothe three-point shot in college basketball, has the oldest basketball tournament in thenation and was the college home of suchsporting greats as Arnold Palmer, StephenCurry, Jerry West and Charlie “ChooChoo” Justice.

Academic excellence has long been amajor part of the Southern Conference’stradition. League athletes have been recog-nized countless times on CoSIDAAcademic All-America and district teams.Eighteen Rhodes-Scholar winners havecome out of the conference, including sixfrom Davidson. Each year, the league dis-tributes at least three graduate scholar-ships, two of which were won by Wildcatsoccer players in 2004.

The Southern Conference was born onFeb. 25, 1921, in Atlanta, Ga., when 14institutions from the 30-member SouthernIntercollegiate Athletic Association (SIAA)reorganized as the Southern Conference. The charter members were Alabama,Auburn, Clemson, Georgia, Georgia Tech,Kentucky, Maryland, Mississippi State,North Carolina, N.C. State, Tennessee,Virginia, Virginia Tech and Washington &Lee, and athletic competition began thatfall.

In 1922, seven schools — Florida,Louisiana State, Mississippi, SouthCarolina, the University of the South,Tulane and Vanderbilt — joined the ranks.

Since then, conference membership hasexperienced a series of membershipchanges with 42 institutions being affiliat-ed with the league. The league has under-gone two major transitions during its his-tory.

The first occurred in December of 1932.The Southeastern Conference formed outof the 23-school Southern Conferencewhen 13 members west and south of theAppalachian Mountains reorganized tohelp reduce the extensive travel demands.

In 1953, Clemson, Duke, Maryland,North Carolina, N.C. State, South Carolinaand Wake Forest withdrew from the

league to form the Atlantic CoastConference, seeking to schedule a greaternumber of regular-season basketball gamesagainst local rivals.

Today, the league continues to thriveand is home to Appalachian State, Collegeof Charleston, The Citadel, Davidson, Elon,Furman, Georgia Southern, UNCGreensboro, Chattanooga, WesternCarolina and Wofford. On July 1, 2008,Samford officially joined the league, bring-ing membership of the conference to 12.VMI is an associate member in the sport ofwrestling.

The SoCon currently declares champi-ons in 10 men’s sports — football, soccer, cross country, basketball, indoor and out-door track and field, wrestling, baseball, tennis and golf — and nine women’s sports— soccer, volleyball, cross country, basket-ball, indoor and outdoor track and field, tennis, golf and softball.

The Southern Conference office is locat-ed in historic Beaumont Mill inSpartanburg, S.C.
