RADFORD ATHLETICSThe Radford University athletic program offers 19 varsity sports, eight for men and 11 for

women: men’s and women’s basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, tennis, indoor and out-door track, along with field hockey, swimming, softball and volleyball for women, and base-ball for men.

The Dedmon Center and the outdoor athletic facilities, which surround the multi-purpose building are the award-winning focal point of a program that has grown rapidly the last three decades.

The athletic program has grown dramatically since 1974-75, when men’s sports were first offered on a varsity level. Growth of the program has been rapid, but not random. Each step has been carefully controlled, with new sports being added only to meet existing demands and only after assurances for a quality operation could be met. The result is a well-balanced and highly successful program.

Radford currently competes in the Big South Conference. A charter member of the young league, Radford has won 39 League titles in 10 different sports and has advanced to NCAA postseason play in seven sports.

Highlander athletics offers strong support for its student-athletes. From academic advis-ing to compliance services, Radford gives its student-athletes the support needed to be successful in the classroom. Radford’s athletic training and strength and conditioning pro-grams allow the student-athletes to compete at their best possible level.

A true team atmosphere, the Highlander family consists of each and every Radford stu-dent-athlete past and present, the coaches and athletics staff. Support for each program starts from within athletics and reaches out into the general university population and the community at large. Student-athletes and staff support each other, across sports, into train-ing and the weightroom. In addition, strong personal bonds run throughout the Highlander family binding student-athletes, coaches and staff to each other.

Since its founding in 1983, the Big South Conference has matured into a competitive leader in college athletics, actively pursuing excellence onthefieldofplayandintheclassroom.TheLeague’sgrowingpresenceas an NCAA Division I athletic conference is evident by athletic accom-plishments on the national stage, innovative marketing and media partner-ships, increased television packages, and quality athletic competition while intentionally fostering the academic, personal, social, athletic and leadership development of each student-athlete. This has evolved into the Conference’s mission of “Developing Leaders Through Athletics.”

The Big South Conference was formed on August 21, 1983, when Charleston Southern (then Baptist College) Athletic Director Howard Bagwell and Augusta President George Christenberry began recruiting members into the Big South, receiving initial commitments from Augusta, Charleston Southern, Campbell, Coastal Carolina and Winthrop. One monthlater,Dr.EdwardM.SingletonwasselectedastheLeague’sfirstCommissioner and continued to solicit new members. His efforts led to the additions of Armstrong State, Radford and UNC Asheville, giving the BigSouthmorethantherequiredsixmemberstoconstituteanofficialconference.TheBigSouth’sfirstyearofcompetitionwasintheFallof1984, and in September 1986, the Big South Conference was granted full-fledgedNCAADivisionIstatus.

During its infancy and prior to securing automatic bids to NCAA Championships, the Big South made early strides in earning at-large berths in several national postseason events, including volleyball, women’s basketball and women’s golf. In 1989, George F. “Buddy” Sasser replaced the retiring Dr. Singleton as Commissioner, and in 1990, the Leaguereceiveditsfirstautomaticbid–receivinganautomaticqualifierto the NCAA Baseball Championship. Under Sasser’s seven years of leadership, the Conference implemented its public relations and compli-anceprograms,andintroduceditsfirst-evermen’sbasketballtelevisionpackage,featuringtheBigSouthcompetingamongsomeofthefinestteams in the nation.

In August 1996, Kyle B. Kallander replaced Sasser as the third Com-missioner, and in his 13 years at the helm of the Big South, Kallander has been instrumental in aggressively promoting the Conference to new levels. The Conference has enjoyed record levels in marketing revenue during the past several years, he has brought television coverage to Big South women’sbasketball, baseballandsoftballforthefirsttimeinConferencehistory, as well as increased national television exposure to the League as a whole through aggressive and unique television packages.

Under Kallander’s leadership, the Big South developed and initi-ateditsfirstlong-rangestrategicplan,re-affirmingtheLeague’svisionasa distinctive athletic Conference committed to the quality of institutional life through athletic competition. He also spearheaded the efforts to add football as a championship sport, which came to fruition in 2002, and hassolidifiedConferencemembershipwiththeadditionsofHighPoint,Gardner-Webb and Presbyterian, and in 2011-12, the return of charter member Campbell University. In the last 15 years, the Big South has experienced monumental growth and success in nearly every sport. During this time, the Con-

ference has had two individual National Champions, more than 200 All-Americans, has reached the “Sweet 16” in men’s soccer, women’s basketball and baseball, has received national Top 25 rankings in men’s soccer, men’s basketball, women’s basketball, baseball, men’s outdoor track&field, andmen’sgolf, hadanindividualselectedtoplayintheNCAASinglesChampionshipfourtimesinadditiontothefirstmen’stennis doubles at-large selection, had the No. 1 ranked men’s golfer in the country, has had the nation’s top scoring men’s basketball team three consecutive years as well as the national men’s basketball scoring leader twice, received an at-large playoff berth in the Football Championship Subdivisionin2006,andhadaninstitutionfinishfifthintheNCAAMen’sGolfChampionships–thehighest-everteamfinishinanNCAAevent.

The Conference’s tagline, “Developing Leaders Through Athletics” was unveiled in 2008-09 in conjunction with the Conference’s 25th Anni-versary. During Chumbley’s tenure as head coach, Radford has produced 86 all-conferenceperformers,25BigSouthChampions,20regionalqualifiers,18 school records, a regional champion and a two-time All-America. Last season, Chumbley guided Kyle Morse in his second All-America campaign in the hammer throw. The Highlanders were named all-confer-ence in seven events on the men’s side and eight on the women’s. Aimee Veatch enjoyed another standout season under Chumbley’s watchful eye, breaking the Top-20 in the NCAA rankings for the weight throw. Breaking school records have been a common occurance under Chum-bley. A total of 19 school records on the women’s side and 22 men’s re-cords have been eccliped since 2007, when Chumbley arrived in Radford. For his efforts on the women’s side, Chumbley was named 2010 Big South Conference Women’s Coach of the Year for the indoor season. The 2009 season was no different for Chumbley, as the Highlanders carried over their success from the previous year by placing fourth and

sixth in the outdoor championship and sixth and seventh in the indoor championships. Chumbley’s throwers fared well in the 2009seasonastheyplacedinthetop-fiveatboth the indoor and outdoor championships. Chum-bley also had his hands in helping Lindsey Noe become the school record-holder in the pole vault. On the men’s side, he helped with the steady improvement of Matt Dobson and nurtured the talents of Justin Smith. During the 2009 season, each of these two indi-viduals placed at the conference champion-ship; Dobson in the weight throw and Smith in the hammer and discus. Chumbley’s tutelage helped six ath-letes make it to the next level and qualify

for the NCAA Regionals and national championships. Shemelia Brandon, Aimee Veatch and Britney Whittaker on the women’s side and Raschad Kelso, Olajuwon Jones and the 4x400 team on the men’s side. Kyle Morse reached the next level of competition under Chumbley, as he competed in the USATF National Championships. Brett Olinger and Justin Smith also reached the next level of competition as well as they competed in the USATF Junior Championships. Chumbley’s knowledge and experience of the sport saw instant results inthe2008season.Themen’steampostedtheirbest-everfinish,second,at the Indoor Championships. Individually the men’s and women’s teams produced seven all-conference performers. The 2008 outdoor season saw individual Big South success and a number of Chumbley’s athletes advanced to the NCAA Regional meet. Two women, Amy Marshall and Shemelia Brandon, and seven men, Kyle Morse, Nictae Moore, Daniel Oseth, Raschad Kelso, Olajuwon Jones, Wayne Gore and Gaylon Johnson, all competed in the East Regional.Morse, an athlete under Chumbley’s teaching since his sophomore year, claimed the East Regional title in the hammer throw and advanced to theNCAAChampionships,wherehebecameRadford’sfifthAll-Americaathlete,andthefirstwithChumbleyatthehelm. Under Chumbley’s watchful eye, Evans racked up four conference championships and earned Big South Field Performer of the Year honors in both the 2007 indoor and outdoor seasons. Marshall went on to post a pair of javelin titles of her own (2007-08), and etched her name into the school record books. Since White’s arrival at Radford, every school record with the exception of three, have been eclipsed in both the indoor and outdoor seasons.

Lastseason,WhiteguidedseniorOlajuwonJones,whoqualifiedforthefirstroundoftheOutdoorNationalChampionshipsinthe400m.Whitealso mentored the 4x400-meter relay team, which claimed its third con-secutive conference championship.

In the sprints, White directed Raschad Kelso to new indoor school records in the 200 and 400m and added another during outdoor in the 200m. Under White’s guidance, Bryan Wallace set new school marks in the 110-meter hurdles (outdoor) and 60-meter hurdles (indoor) and Brett Olinger collected the 400-meter hurdle school standard.

The 2009 indoor season saw new school records being shattered by sprinters in every meet. There were new school records set in the 60 meters, 60-meter hurdles, 200m, and 400m. The outdoor season was no different as school records were eclipsed in the 400m and the 4x400-meter relay record was tied.

Under White’s watch, four of his sprinters advanced to the NCAA RegionalandtwoqualifiedforNationals;RaschadKelsointhe200andOlajuwon Jones in the 400m. Jones and Kelso were also members of the 4x400-meter relay team that also advanced to Regional competition.

The men’s team of Wayne Gore, Jones, Gaylon Johnson and Kelso posted a time of 3:14.40 at the Big South Championship and a mark of 3:12.41 at the East Regional.

assistantwiththeRadfordUniversitytrackandfieldprogram,overseeingall aspects of distance.

Alongside his assistant reponsibilities, Bossman was promoted to head coach of the men’s and women’s cross country programs in January 2010.

In his two years voluntarily assisting the distance program, Bossman helped guide one men’s all-conference performer, Dawit Legesse, and a two-time women’s all-conference athlete, Lori Crotts, in cross country.

Each season under Bossman’s assistance, the Highlanders have placed a men’s and women’s cross country athlete on the Conference’s all-academic team (Brittany Christian - 2008, 2009; Joel Hanlon - 2008; Nathan Turner - 2009).

In the course of his Radford career, Bossman was an outstanding distance performer for the Highlanders. He twice earned all-conference distinctions as a part of the distance medley relay team in 2006 and the 800m in 2008. Among his accomplishments on the track, Bossman also excelled in the classroom, garnering all-academic honors during the out-door season in 2008.

Bossman clocked Radford’s 2008 season-best times in the indoor 800m (1:55.80) and mile (4:23.56). He also held Radford’s best times in the 800 (1:52.48) and 1,500m (3:56.50) during the outdoor season.
