ees of The University of Alabama officially dedicated the facility formerly known as The Football Building as the Mal M. Moore Athletic Facility.

Under Moore’s direction, Alabama’s athletic teams have produced several Southeastern Conference championships, winning titles in gymnastics, men’s basketball, men’s golf, men’s cross country, baseball and softball; taking SEC tournament titles in both base-ball and softball; and an NCAA gymnas-tics championship. Alabama athletes have earned some of the highest honors the SEC and NCAA have to offer, including SEC Ath-lete of the Year, SEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year, NCAA Top VIII, NCAA Postgraduate Scholarships and NCAA Sportsperson of the Year. These honors are over and above the individual conference and national titles that Alabama athletes continue to bring home to the Capstone on a regular basis.

In addition to making his mark on Alabama, Moore has also had a national impact as a key member of several prestigious NCAA and college football committees. Moore has served on the NCAA Division I Football Is-sues Committee, the SEC Athletic Directors Bowl Advisory Committee and the Big Six Conferences Minority Coaches Forum.

Moore’s distinguished record of service to UA began more than 50 years ago when he joined the Crimson Tide football squad as a scholarship player for Coach Paul “Bear” Bryant from 1958-62. Moore has the distinc-tion of being a part of seven national cham-pionship teams (1961, 1964, 1965, 1973, 1978, 1979, and 1992), 14 SEC championships, and 27 bowl trips during his career as a player and coach, the first as a member of the Crimson Tide’s 1961 national championship team. He is the only individual connected with the Tide program to be a part of seven national championships.

The University of Alabama’s Director of Athletics since 1999, Mal Moore has made an indelible mark on one of the nation’s most storied athletic programs, leading a department that has enjoyed tremendous success athletically and academically and has undergone an unprecedented period of growth during his tenure.

Through his guidance, Alabama’s athletic department remains focused on his vision of having all Crimson Tide athletic teams and student-athletes competitive at the highest level nationally while continuing to elevate athletic facilities at the Capstone to premier status nationally for all sports.

During his tenure as Director of Athletics, Moore has overseen more than $200 mil-lion of capital improvements to University of Alabama athletic facilities. Those proj-ects have encompassed the entire scope of all Crimson Tide athletic programs and have benefitted every Alabama student-athlete, coach, and administrator.

Throughout his multi-faceted career, Moore has worked with a diversified field of con-stituents, from fellow coaches and former players, to fans and the business commu-nity. All of those experiences and relation-ships - in addition to his ability to unify those many constituents - have made him the ideal person to lead Alabama athletics in the 21st century.

His leadership has been crucial in helping guide Alabama through a period that has been, at times, extremely challenging. His guidance and effort helped Alabama ath-letics weather the storm, while continuing to move in a positive direction toward a fu-ture that holds great promise.

Moore’s dedication to and love of the University of Alabama was recognized on March 28, 2007, when as a permanent tribute to his life-long contribution to The University of Alabama, the Board of Trust-

During a coaching career that spanned 31 years, Moore spent 22 of those at Alabama with stops at Montana State, Notre Dame and the NFL’s St. Louis and Phoenix Cardi-nals. At Alabama, Moore started as Coach Bryant’s graduate assistant in 1964, then as defensive backfield coach for five years beginning in 1965 before becoming quar-terbacks coach from 1971-82 and serving as the Tide’s first offensive coordinator start-ing in 1975. He would go on to coordinate all of the offensive plays for Alabama’s last four national championship teams.

A 1963 graduate of The University of Ala-bama, Moore holds both an undergraduate degree in Sociology and a 1964 Master’s De-gree in Secondary Education from the Cap-stone. Moore was born December 19, 1939, in Dozier, Ala. He has been married to the former Charlotte Davis of Tuscaloosa since July 20, 1968. They have one daughter, Mrs. Steve (Heather) Cook of Scottsdale, Ariz., a granddaughter, Anna Lee, and a grandson, Charles Cannon.

2008 SEC CROSS COUNTRY The SEC sent three men’s teams to compete in the NCAA Championships, with Auburn finishing fifth to lead the league, Alabama finishing 10th and Arkansas 28th. Alabama claimed its first SEC championship since 1973 and placed five runners in the top 10. Auburn finished second with Arkansas third and Florida fourth. Alabama’s Joe Walker was named SEC Men’s Cross Country Coach of the Year. Alabama’s Tyson David garnered Men’s Cross Country Athlete of the Year honors and Auburn’s Girma Mesecho was named Men’s Cross Country SEC Freshman of the Year.

CROSS COUNTRYMen — Eight national championships, two individual titles, 88 All-Americans since 1984, 41 teams have finished among the Top 25 since 1984.

THE NATION’S TOP TRACK & FIELD CONFERENCE In the ever-changing world of collegiate athletics, the tradition of excellence in the Southeastern Conference has remained constant. The SEC boasts a rich history and has dominated track and field like no other conference.

In 2008 Alabama had:

- Five All-SEC recipientsEmmanuel Bor, Augustus Mayo, Tyson David, Abraham Kutingala,Andrew Kirwa

- One All-SEC Freshman recipientZac Edwards

- Five All-South Region recipientsEmmanuel Bor, Augustus Mayo, Tyson David, Abraham Kutingala,Andrew Kirwa

For two straight years, The University of Alabama men’s cross country team has seen its best two seasons in school history. Over the past two years, the Crimson Tide has produced two top two SEC Championship finishes including the 2008 SEC Championship, two South Region titles, and two top 10 finishes at the NCAA Championships.

Page 21: 2009 Men's Cross Country

CROSS COUNTRY 21

The Alabama men have made an appearance at the NCAA Championships four straight years now and hope to make it five straight in 2009. They turned in the highest finish in school history two years ago placing sixth and followed that with a 10th place finish in 2008. The coaching staff has taken notice of the potential of this year’s group and expects similar or better results than last sea-son. “I think our expectations and goals are fairly high,” cross country coach Joe Walker said. “We’ve established ourselves as a team that’s at nation-als virtually every year and been top 10 the last two years. We’ve also won an SEC cross country title so I don’t think we go backwards from there. I think our goals remain to finish top 10 in the coun-try and hopefully to repeat as SEC Champions.” For 17 years, Arkansas had dominated the Southeastern Conference but Alabama felt confi-dent it was time for a change and claimed the title as their own in 2008 snapping the Razorbacks 34 year conference title streak dating back to the Southwest Conference. The question now is if the Crimson Tide can repeat as Champions or did they lose too much from last season, returning just four of the top seven runners from that squad? “When you look at the years of eligibility, we may be considered young but also up front, it’s

a pretty veteran team,” Walker said. “We’ve got some guys that have come out of junior college so they’ve had that collegiate experience already. Our incoming guy from Kenya is running at a high level in Kenya and I think NCAA competition will be a great opportunity for him to shine. So we’re young in a sense but experienced.” This team also enters this season with a target on their back, which is something Alabama has not had since 1973 when they won their first SEC Cross Country Championship. Coach Walker had this to say about approaching this season with a different mindset as defending SEC Champions. “Now we’re the target of other people whereas before we’re kind of looking at it as ‘hey, there’s this one team that’s had a hold on that title for years’ and I think it’s a little easier to motivate a group to go after that target. Now we’re the team that’s coming off the championship and there are a lot of teams out there that are strong and feel like it’s their turn so we do approach it differently and I’m sure it will change a little of our mindset.”Ironically, Alabama has just the type of athlete it needs in order to maintain a championship at-titude and possibly repeat as SEC Champions in senior Tyson David – David finished second at the SEC Championships in 2008 and was the SEC Ath-lete of the Year in cross country. The JUCO transfer is not necessarily a vocal leader as much as he is a

leader by example. Since joining the Crimson Tide, David has won four SEC titles, one Mideast Region title and been named All-American twice on the track. “Tyson’s really injected a sense of focus into the program,” Walker said. He’s a guy that really knows his body, knows how to train and knows what he needs to do to be ready for the champi-onships.” Also returning in 2009 is senior Emmanuel Bor who finished fifth at the SEC Championships and was the top finisher for the squad at the NCAA Championships. Bor, the SEC Champion in 2007, should be motivated by the fact that his brother Julius Bor has joined the Crimson Tide and looks to add depth to this team. Julius comes in as a 3:58 miler, but the coaching staff believes he can compete for the SEC title in cross country as well. Andrew Kirwa, who has been All-SEC and All-South Region every year, returns for his junior sea-son after finishing 10th at the SEC Championships last season. Junior Stephen Payne is the final re-turner from last year’s championship squad’s top seven and will look to contribute even more this season after a successful rookie year in 2008. On top of the returning talent, Alabama has added even more key players and depth with Mo-ses Kiptoo, a long distance specialist that the staff

expects to surprise many this fall. Fred Samoei is a middle distance star that is likely to compete for the individual SEC title. E.C. Gibbs, a transfer from Georgia Tech, is another guy from the state of Ala-bama that could contribute if he can get his SEC waiver. The Crimson Tide will open up the 2009 cam-paign with a smaller meet at the Brooks Memphis Twilight on Sept. 5 in Memphis, Tenn. before re-turning to Tuscaloosa to host the 21st Annual Crimson Classic at the Harry Pritchett Running Park on Sept. 18. “I think we have tremendous schedule this sea-son that gives us a variety of different experiences and different fields,” Walker said. “It’s one that presents a lot of challenges and yet will help pre-pare us for what we hope will be another trip to the NCAA Championships as a team. Hosting the region meet will be a good chance for people to come out and see us against the best teams in the south.” The squad will preview the site of the SEC Championships when it faces conference rival Ole Miss at the Ole Miss Invite on Sept. 26 in Oxford, Miss. Alabama will then travel across the country to race at the Bill Dellinger Invitational hosted by defending NCAA Champion Oregon on Oct. 2 in Eugene, Ore. Before starting the championship portion of the schedule, the Crimson Tide will get

a look at the NCAA Championship course in Terre Haute, Ind. while competing at Pre-Nationals on Oct. 17. The men claimed the title in 2008 defeat-ing 10 of the top 30 ranked teams in the country. As previously mentioned, Alabama will attempt to repeat as conference champions at the SEC Championships being held in Oxford, Miss. on Oct. 31. Alabama will host the NCAA South Regional for the first time since 2004 when they finished eighth. Since then, the men have won three out of the last four titles including two straight (`05, ‘07 and `08). The NCAA Championships return to Terre Haute, Ind. on Nov. 23 where the Crimson Tide have finished sixth and tied for 10th in the past two seasons, respectively. After finishing 10th at the NCAA Championships last year, there was visible disappointment in both the athletes and coaches. Alabama had a vision of standing on the podium in 2007 at the SEC Cham-pionships and fell short only to claim the title in 2008. The squad also had a vision of standing on the podium at the NCAA Championships in 2008 and fell short so 2009 should be exciting to see how this team can or if they will bounce back.“We were 10th in the country and that was prob-ably our worst effort of the year,” Walker said. “We felt like there were only two teams that were just better than us and we honestly expected a top five

finish and came away 10th so it was a disappoint for sure. I think the guys right now are excited about the group in a sense that we know we’ve got the talent to compete and that’s the first step.” In this sport, it takes a certain and most defi-nitely rare mindset to push through the pain of a grueling 6.2 mile race in the cold slush with a mixture of snow, mud and ice under your feet to emerge with the elusive title in late November. In order for your mind to endure the elements, your body must also be fit and healthy on the day when it matters most. “I’m confident that we’ve got the talent in place at this point to be a contender,” Walker said. “Now it’s getting fit, being healthy and being focused for team type goals. You have to be fit, you’ve got to be hardened and really ready in November and that’s the biggest challenge in getting your body to the point where you’re as fit as you’ve ever been and you’re also healthy.”

Page 22: 2009 Men's Cross Country

ALABAMA22

As newly crowned SEC Champions and defending NCAA South Region Champions, Alabama rolled into the region meet with a huge target on its backs. The squad was able to coast along the course to win their second straight region title with 49 points even though runner-up Auburn’s top three runners finished 1-2-3. For two years now, the Tide has placed all five scoring runners in the top 20 at the meet and have all five named to the All-South Region team. Alabama’s top five athletes were only separated by 52 seconds. The men were led by returning senior Tyson David who finished in fifth place, but a pack of three Alabama runners followed close behind in Augustus Maiyo (8th), Abraham Kutingala (10th) and returning senior Emmanuel Bor (11th). Returning junior Andrew Kirwa rounded out the Tide’s top five runners as he crossed the line in 18th place. Returning as a junior, Stephen Payne and Zac Edwards, who transferred were the final two finish-ers for the Crimson Tide coming through in 76th and 92nd place, respectively. Last season was the third time in four years that Alabama has had its top five runners named to the All-South Region team. The squads in 2005 and 2007 had equal success. However, this is the first time in school history that Alabama has won the conference championship and the region championship in the same year.

Page 23: 2009 Men's Cross Country

CROSS COUNTRY 23

For the first time since 1974, the Alabama men’s cross country team begins the season as defending SEC Champions. The Crimson Tide, returning three of its top five runners from last season, took down the reigning champion, Arkansas, who had won 34 straight conference titles dating back to the 1974 Southwest Conference Championship. At the 2008 SEC Championship in Starkville, Miss.. at the Mississippi State Cross Country Course, the squad dominated the field and won their first con-ference title since 1973 tallying just 32 points. Alabama placed all five scoring runners in the top ten and were led by returning seniors Tyson David and Emmanuel Bor who finished in second and fifth place, respectively. Augustus Maiyo would cross the line in sixth followed by Abraham Kutingala in ninth with returning junior Andrew Kirwa rounding out the top Tide runners in 10th. For the first time in school history, all five earned All-SEC honors as well as All-South Region honors in the same year. Zac Edwards, who transferred to South Alabama, finished in 29th place

garnering All-SEC Freshman honors. He was followed by returning junior Stephen Payne (60th) and returning sophomores Nathan Corder (65th) and Austin Duckworth(89th). “I’m really proud of the way the guys ran as a group,” cross country coach Joe Walker said. “We told all of them `Don’t get selfish and don’t let your ego come above your team’ and to me it really looked like they put the team first and I’m just really, really proud of them.” Alabama became the first team other than Arkansas to win the Southeast-ern Conference Championship since Tennessee won in 1990. The men’s cross country team will take a week off before making the trip to Knoxville, Tenn. for the NCAA South Region Championships hosted by The University of Tennessee. Alabama is the two-time defending Region Cham-pion and has won five of the last nine region championships. In 2007, the Crimson Tide’s top five runners all garnered All-South Region honors, leading Alabama to the championship with just 28 points.

“I’m really proud of the way the guys ran as a group. We told all of them `Don’t get selfish and don’t let your ego come above your team’ and to me it really looked like they put the team first and I’m just really, really proud of them.”

He has coached the Tide to five NCAA Regional Championships in 2000, 2001, 2005, 2007 and 2008 as well as two runner-up finishes at the 2002 and 2006 NCAA Regional Championships. His most prolific athlete, the late David Kimani, won back-to-back-to-back South-eastern Conference cross-country championships while winning three consecutive NCAA Regional championships. Kimani won the 1999 NCAA Cross Country Championship, finished fourth at the 2000 NCAA Cross Country Championships and placed 11th at the 2002 NCAA Cross Country Champion-ships. “Joe is a proven coach with valuable experience as an assistant and head coach,” head track and field coach Harvey Glance said. “He has developed many successful athletes. In addition, Joe is a tre-mendous recruiter.” Under his direction, the Alabama cross coun-try and distance programs have grown by leaps and bounds. Since his arrival at the Capstone, he has coached four SEC Male Cross-Country Ath-letes of the Year, 21 SEC Champions, three NCAA Cross Country Regional Champions, three National Champions, 18 All-Americans and 32 All-South Region performers. He has been named 2001 and 2008 SEC Men’s Cross Country Coach of the Year and the 2000, 2001, 2007 and 2008 NCAA South Region Cross Country Coach of the Year. In 2007, he coached the Alabama cross-country team to the school’s best finish ever at the NCAA Champi-onships with a sixth place finish. Walker then added three-time JUCO National Champion and eight-time JUCO All-American Tyson David in the spring of 2008 to an already stacked distance squad. He coached David to an All-American honor that spring in the 10,000m as well as an individual SEC Championship in the indoor 5,000m and outdoor 10,000m. He would go on to repeat the indoor/outdoor feat in 2009. David is the current holder of the school and SEC record in the 10,000m. In 2009, David was also the 5,000m Mideast Region Champion and earned All-American in the indoor 5,000m and outdoor 10,000m. Walker coached the Alabama men’s cross coun-try team to its best year ever in 2008. The Crimson Tide won the program’s first SEC Title since 1973 and just the second conference championship ever. Walker led the team that ended Arkansas’ streak of 34 straight (17 SWC, 17 SEC) conference titles. Alabama then went on to win their fifth South Re-

gion title in eight years and second straight. The Crimson Tide finished the season with a 10th place finish at the NCAA Championships. The team fin-ished with back-to-back top 10 NCAA finishes for the first time in school history. Walker joined the Crimson Tide following a two-year stint as an assistant coach at South Alabama. While at USA, he helped lead athletes to NCAA cross country and indoor individual champion-ships. Walker also helped lead the Jaguars to sev-eral Sun Belt team titles. Prior to his tenure at South Alabama, Walker served as the head coach for the men and women’s track and field teams at Meridian (Miss.) Commu-nity College. During his stay at MCC, he guided the team to national championships in cross country and indoor track and field. Twice named National Indoor Championship Coach of the Meet, Walker coached 16 individual national champions and 74 All-American performers while at Meridian Com-munity College. A 1994 graduate of the University of Mississippi, Walker was a four-time Academic All-SEC per-former for the Rebels. He was a member of Ole Miss’ world ranked 4x1500m squad in 1994 and finished his career with the third best 3,000m time in Ole Miss history. He is married to Carol Ann Walker and they are the parents of Joseph Kai Walker who was born on July 18, 2002 and Maia Malin Walker who was born on Sept. 17, 2005.

Former World-class sprinter Harvey Glance, a 16-time All-American, three-time Olympian and 1976 gold medal winner enters his 13th season as the head coach of the men’s track and field team at the University of Alabama. Since Glance has taken over the reins of the men’s program at the Capstone, the Crimson Tide has found themselves ranked among the nation’s best in cross country, indoor track and outdoor track finishing 12th in the inaugural John McDonnell Program of the Year Standings. Glance turned the Crimson Tide’s track program around in just a short period of time where after just three seasons, he saw 21 of 24 competitors who made the travel roster set personal best times and marks, establish numerous school records and top ten performances. During his 12 seasons at the Capstone he has coached 75 All-Americans, including 15 in the 2002 season. He has also coached 41 SEC Champi-ons, eight NCAA Champions, and his athletes have set 23 new school records. Track fans around the world understand the synonymous relationships between track and the name Harvey Glance. When you think of one, the other automatically comes to mind. He is the great-est sprinter in the history of the state of Alabama and his name is forever etched in the record books for being the fastest man in the world. In 1976 he held the world record for the 100 meter dash and in 1978 he held the world record for the 100 yard dash.He still holds the Southeastern Conference record in the 220y dash and 4x100y relay as part of Au-burn’s relay team. Glance is also still the co-holder of the fastest 100y dash in the SEC. During his col-legiate career, he was a NCAA Champion in three events, the 60y, 100m and 200m dashes. As head track coach, Glance feels his most im-portant responsibility to his athletes is to see that they leave the University of Alabama with a diplo-ma. He feels his second most important responsi-bility is that his athletes leave Alabama as stronger individuals. Glance compares being a head coach to being the father of a large family. “When you are a child, you don’t understand discipline and rules,” said Glance. “As you grow and mature the discipline is appreciated and un-derstood.” In his 18 years of coaching, Glance has tutored athletes to 177 All-American honors. His impressive list includes such stars as Tim Broe, Ron Bramlett, Tyson David, Kenneth Fambro, David Kimani, Cori Loving, Miguel Pate, Jeremy Taylor, Latonel Wil-liams, as well as the Distance Medley Relay and 4x400m relay teams. All have earned All-Ameri-can honors at the NCAA Championships. The most recent feather in his cap was Broe qualifying for the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, Greece. Broe qualified for the finals in the event where he finished 11th. Glance also saw former Crimson Tide All-American Miguel Pate compete at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, China. Glance has coached athletes Bryan Howard, Clark Humphreys, Alabama’s Tim Broe, David Ki-

mani, and Ron Bramlett to NCAA Championship titles in the 55m dash indoors, the pole vault out-doors, the outdoor 3,000m steeplechase, the in-door 3,000m and 5,000m, and the outdoor 110m hurdles, respectively. Overall, Glance has seen his athletes accumulate eight NCAA titles since 2000. During the 1995-96 track season, Glance’s track team earned 14 All-American honors which were the most ever won in one season until he eclipsed that mark in the 2002 season when his athletes accumulated 15 All-American honors. Also in 2002, he led the Tide to its highest national indoor ranking when they finished second. In addition to his great success, Glance has coached highly suc-cessful international track programs. In 1994, Glance coached the World Junior Team in Lisbon, Portugal. In the summer of 1997, Glance was the head men’s track coach for Team USA at the World University Games in Sicily, Italy. The team won four gold, five silver, and eight bronze medals. During the summer of 1999, Glance was the head coach of the men’s track team at the Pan American Games in Winnipeg, Canada where the U.S. led in total medals won with 295. The team won five gold, eight silver, and four bronze med-als, making it one of the most successful teams in history. He was an assistant coach for Team USA at the 2003 World Championships in Paris, France. Glance coached the 2006 World junior Team in Beijing before returning to Beijing as an assistant coach for Team USA at the 2008 Olympic Games. His most recent stint came as the head men’s

coach for Team USA at the 2009 World Champion-ships in Berlin, Germany. He is currently a member of the Executive Com-mittee for the Alabama Sports Festival, a position he began in 1992. In 1998, Glance was elected to the Board of Directors for the Big Brothers Big Sis-ters, Boys and Girls Club, and Special Olympics or-ganizations, proving his dedication and willingness to give back to the community. Glance was also selected as the chairman of USA Track and Field’s 100m sprint committee. In 1996, he was inducted into the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame. In 2002, he was named one of the top 100 State of Alabama’s Greatest Athletes of the 20th Century. He was also No. 23 on Sports Illustrated’s List of the 50 Greatest Sports Figures from the state of Alabama. The former world re-cord holder in the 100-yard dash is a native of Phenix City, Ala. On top of his athletic and coaching accolades, Glance was bestowed the most prominent award of all in 2008 – the Congressional Gold Medal of Freedom. The medal is the nation’s highest and most distinguished civilian award. The medal is presented both for singular acts of exceptional service and for lifetime achievement. Before joining the Alabama staff, Glance guided Juliet Campbell while at Auburn to being named the 1993 SEC Female Athlete of the Year. He also coached Auburn’s Craig Hepburn, Samuel Matete, and current assistant coach Victor Houston to Olympic competition.

CROSS COUNTRY 43CROSS COUNTRY

He started his collegiate career at The University of South Alabama before choosing to join current cross country coach Joe Walker at The University of Alabama. Kimani had completed all of his de-gree requirements needed to graduate and his wife, Chamis, accepted his degree in Commerce and Business. David Kimani was as unselfish as they come, sending scholarship money back home to help sup-port his family and even forgoing meals to do so. “David was that story we can relate with,” Coach Walker said. “Where most people can’t dream or can’t find any hope, he somehow was able to come from that environment and was on track to find suc-cess in life.” David certainly had a bright future in the sport of cross country and track and field and was con-sidered by many a future Olympic hopeful. He de-feated Irish Olympian Alistair Cragg multiple times as well as American Olympian Daniel Lincoln, both of whom ran at The University of Arkansas. Kimani helped lead the Crimson Tide to its best finish at the 2002 NCAA Indoor Championships where the team placed second. Kimani was the type of athlete that could get a crowd on his side. “On two separate occasions, David was knocked down in the opening stages of a race and was able to get back up and win the title,” Walker recalls. ”It was something that the people who witnessed it will always remember.” These two races were the mile and 1,500 meter races at the 2001 SEC Indoor Championships and 2002 SEC Outdoor Championships, respectively. Kimani, a six-time National Champion and 14-time All-American, now oversees the Sam Bailey Track Stadium with a memorial to his legacy. “David was a guy that had a dream and a belief in himself,” Walker said. “To see him on the path to achieving success was exciting.” David Kimani is survived by his wife, Chamis, his parents, John Murage and Gladys Wanjiku, his brother, and two sisters.

Athlete of the Year

David Kimani was born on February 20, 1978, in Nairobi, Kenya. Days before signing a shoe contract, David died of unknown causes on April 17, 2003. Ki-mani was considered by most to be the greatest dis-tance runner in Alabama track and field history.
