The year also saw the final groundwork being laid for the launch of the New Generation Bachelor ofCommerce in 2008. This work had two major goals to develop the degree’s curriculum and structure andto communicate the Melbourne Model changes tostudents, parents, schools and the business community.

Our key message for these stakeholders is that theNew Generation Bachelor of Commerce (BCom) offers an enhanced professional preparation for ourgraduates. The new curriculum provides the samedepth of professional specialisation as the old, while breadth studies and implementation of newexperiential learning opportunities will further enhancethe employability of our graduates. Importantly, the BCom continues to enjoy professional accreditationin accounting, actuarial studies and finance.

We are pleased to say our message was heard ‘loud and clear’, as we experienced a significant boost in demand for the BCom among school leavers. This resulted in an increase in the ENTERscore to 95.6. The successful outcome of the launch of the New Generation BCom and the subsequenthigh ENTER score reinforces its position as thepremier undergraduate business and economicsprogram in Victoria and, arguably, in Australia.

2007 was also a ‘red letter’ year with respect to our graduate programs. On the 26th of October, the Melbourne Graduate School of Management was formally launched, along with the full suite of the University’s graduate schools, by the Chancellor of the University, Mr Ian Renard.

The Melbourne Graduate School of Management willbe responsible for the delivery of all of the Faculty’sgraduate programs, including coursework and researchdegrees. The establishment of the new GraduateSchool gives us the opportunity to fully review theentire range of graduate programs, ensuring theyremain at the ‘cutting edge’ of industry, research and pedagogical developments.

We are confident that both of these new endeavourswill deliver a highly rewarding experience for ourstudents.

Our teaching performance is, once again, outstanding. We have received significant national recognition forthe innovative teaching of our individual academics, as well as for our collective performance with a topranking in the Commonwealth teaching and learningperformance fund.

A number of initiatives have also been launched toenhance the study and campus experience for ourstudents.

In the last weeks of 2007, two integrated studentcentres were established at separate locations for undergraduate and graduate students. Byconcentrating a wide range of administration andsupport services into a single, well-designed facility, each of these student centres will improve access for students seeking to manage their enrolmentsand student life.

One of the key elements of the student centre model is the Student Experience team, to beintegrated in each centre. These teams will deliverprograms including orientations, mentoring and social events to enrich the campus experience for all of our students.

The Faculty’s industry links were greatly strengthenedduring the course of 2007. A key development wasthe inauguration on the 21st of November of theFaculty Advisory Board. Chaired by Mr Peter Yates,Chairman of Peony Capital, the Board was describedby the Financial Review as a ‘dream team’ ofAustralian business. The Board members are Ms Sally Capp, CEO of the Committee for Melbourne;Seek co-founder, Mr Paul Bassat; former President of the Australian Business Council, Mr Hugh MorganAC; Mr Chris Leptos AM Managing Partner at Ernst & Young; Dr Ian Macfarlane AC, former Governor of the Reserve Bank; Mr Terrence Campbell AOChairman of Goldman Sachs JBWere; Ms PatriciaCross, a Director of Wesfarmers Limited, NationalAustralia Bank Limited, Qantas and the MurdochChildren’s Research Institute; Mr Peter Gunn,Managing Director of the PGA Group Pty Ltd; Mr Kevin Wong, former Managing Director of JPMorgan; Dean of the Faculty of Economics andCommerce, Professor Margaret Abernethy; andDeputy Dean of the Faculty, Professor Bruce Grundy.

Message from the Dean2007 was another year of ground-breaking developments for the Faculty of Economics andCommerce. The Faculty was actively engaged in the development of the Melbourne Model reformsand we were a key participant in the formal launch of the Melbourne Model on the 17th of April.

In 2008 we will continue to implement initiatives to become the leading Economics and Commerce Faculty

and Graduate School of Management in the region and one of the best in the world.

Melbourne is a globally significant research institution. It is Australia’s largest university in terms of bothresearch expenditure and income, and is the country’ssecond largest research and development organisation. This position is enhanced by its proximity to so manyof the nation’s independent medical research institutes in Parkville.

University of Melbourne staff include Nobel laureates, eminent scholars, award-winning researchers and manyinternationally renowned academics. In all disciplines,Melbourne is active in international networks ofscholarship and collaboration, offering excellentacademic and research prospects to its students.

The University of Melbourne is a vibrant institutionwith a reputation for excellence built over 155 years. Our success has been achieved by insisting oninternational excellence and alignment with global best practice in teaching and research.

Throughout 2007, the University devoted much effortto develop ‘the Melbourne Model’ for implementationin 2008. The Melbourne Model comprises a majorcurriculum reorganisation that aligns the University of Melbourne with European and US higher educationpathways. Focusing on a ‘3+2’ model of three-yearundergraduate and two-year professional and researchmasters degrees, the Melbourne Model promisesstudents an educational experience attuned to thechallenges of the 21st century.

The Melbourne Model also commits the University to place an equal emphasis on research, teaching andcommunity engagement, or ‘Knowledge Transfer’.These three strands of activity form a ‘triple helix’, a DNA that will shape all of the university’s activities as it seeks to become one of the world’s leadinguniversities.

The University community is made up of 40,000students, including more than 9,000 internationalstudents from a least 100 different countries. Thereare more than 6,500 staff working in the University.

The University offers 29 undergraduate degrees but, from 2008, the majority of enrolments will be in the six ‘New Generation’ degrees developed under theMelbourne Model. These degrees, in Arts,

Biomedicine, Commerce, Environments, Music and Science, provide a broad and deep, discipline-based education and act as pathways to graduateprofessional degrees in agricultural science, appliedcommerce, architecture, engineering, law, medicine, nursing and teaching.

In addition to the new graduate professional degrees, the University continues to offer traditional graduateand postgraduate certificates, diplomas and mastersdegrees including masters by coursework and byresearch. With over 3000 students in research higherdegrees, the University confers more Doctors ofPhilosophy and higher doctorates than any otherAustralian institution.

There are 12 faculties and schools in the University:Architecture, Building and Planning; Arts; Economicsand Commerce; Education; Engineering; Law;Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences; Music;Science; Veterinary Science; Land and Food Resources and the Victorian College of the Arts.

As professional education moves to graduate levelunder the Melbourne Model, many of these facultieshave launched graduate schools or are making thetransition to become graduate schools. New graduateschools include the Melbourne School of Design, theMelbourne School of Engineering and the MelbourneGraduate School of Management.

The University of Melbourne is a member of theprestigious Group of Eight, comprised of the leadingcomprehensive, research-intensive universities inAustralia. In addition, the University is a member ofUniversitas 21, an international network of leadingresearch-intensive universities. Universitas 21facilitates collaboration and cooperation between the member universities and creates entrepreneurialopportunities larger than could be achieved individually,or through traditional bilateral alliances.

The main University campus covers 20 hectares and islocated at Parkville, adjacent to the Melbourne centralbusiness district and near Carlton’s vibrant LygonStreet precinct. A number of residential colleges andstudent apartments are located close to the campus.

The University of MelbourneEstablished in 1853, the University of Melbourne is a public-spirited institution that makesdistinctive contributions to society in research, teaching and knowledge transfer. 2007 Faculty Highlights

In addition to the successful launches of theMelbourne Model, the New Generation Bachelor ofCommerce and the Graduate School of Management, covered in the Dean’s message, the Faculty enjoyedmany additional highlights in 2007.

In 2007 the bi-annual journal Insights was launched as a major Knowledge Transfer initiative. In twoissues, pitched at the general reader, Insights coveredtopics including the booming Chinese economy,Amazon deforestation and climate change, globalpoverty and trade protectionism. The Faculty is also publishing a regular Knowledge Transfer flyer, detailing the latest projects and initiatives in which wecollaborate or engage with the community and industry.

The inauguration of the Faculty Advisory Boardrepresents a major step towards a richer dialogue with the business community, one that we believe will be mutually beneficial.

In August, the Department of Economics opened its new laboratory for Experimental Economics. Thelaboratory simulates complex economic scenariosincorporating behavioural elements from participants.Experimental economics is a burgeoning field, and a new undergraduate subject offers our students the opportunity to explore it. One of the partnersfunding the laboratory, the Victorian Department of

Treasury has become a major client for training andresearch in the use of experimental economics. Otherpartners in the Experimental Economics Laboratoryinclude the Economic Design Network, the Faculty of Economics and Commerce and the Office of theVice-Chancellor.

At the date of writing, the Faculty’s new Berkeley Street building is up to its 10th storey and constructionis proceeding rapidly. It is anticipated all floors will be completed by mid-2008 and the fit-out will thencontinue until building hand over in February 2009.

The Faculty’s success in winning competitive researchfunding exceeds that of previous years. Grants wereawarded to 'traditional' research projects as well as to industry partnerships indicating the academic andpublic relevance of our endeavours.

In 2007, Faculty staff earned very high profilerecognition for their teaching. Inspiring and innovativeteaching by individual academics was recognised witha prestigious Carrick Award and two Carrick Citations(see the Awards and Distinctions section for full details).

The very high overall standard of our teaching isrecognised in the University’s top ranking in theBusiness, Law and Economics discipline group of the2008 Learning and Teaching Performance Fund. ThisCommonwealth fund aims to reward excellent teachingstandards in Australian Universities and, in 2008, willdistribute $83.3million across the university sector.

Diversity remains a key priority in our internationalrecruiting and work to develop our markets in India, in particular, is an ongoing focus. Our scholarshipprogram continues to provide study opportunities forapplicants from our region and further afield. Theprogram is also targeted to provide opportunities to applicants from developing economies.

Some of our internationalisation highlights in 2007include:

Y expansion of the dual degree agreement with Universitas Gadjah Mada to cover bothundergraduate and graduate programs

Y negotiation of a dual degree agreement with Universitas Indonesia

Y exploration of potential dual degree links in Europe and South Asia

Y increased student diversity with successfulrecruitment from markets such as Mauritius,Taiwan, Vietnam, and the Philippines

Y streamlined entry requirements to avoidovercrowding from major markets like China, while still ensuring access for the highest standard applicants.

Delivering international professional experiences for our graduate students is a high priority, with significantprograms launched in 2007. The Thai Mobility Programtakes a group of students, local and international, to spend 10 days in Thailand, consulting for twoorganisations. The consulting projects are genuinebusiness challenges and the project offers ourstudents exposure to real business scenarios thatdemand analysis and solutions drawn from the fullbreadth of knowledge acquired through their studies.

Another initiative, truly representative of the globalinformation economy, is the ‘Virtual Internship’ inwhich our students conduct online analysis of Chinesebusinesses listed on the New York Stock Exchange. The internship host is a New York based companyspecialising in web based financial analysis. Studentsare given project assignments and check in with thecompany online. InternationalisationIn 2007 the faculty maintained a strong level of international applications and enrolments in spite of a general downturn in international recruiting throughout Australia. We strengthened our linkswith a number of international universities and we continue to attract high profile academic visitorsfrom around the world.

Study Abroad and Exchange Opportunities

An important part of the Faculty and the Melbourne Model agenda is ensuring that our students have a genuinelyinternational experience, by being exposed to international students in Melbourne and having the opportunity tostudy at partner institutions overseas. The Faculty welcomed over 110 students from study abroad and exchangepartners in 2007. Scholarships were made available for students from Melbourne to study at partner institutionsoverseas and many Melbourne students went on exchange to countries including the UK, USA, Italy, Germany and the Netherlands.

The Faculty of Economics and Commerce currently has exchange programs with the following institutions.Students from these institutions can apply to study with the Faculty and our current students can also apply tostudy at these institutions.
