Season Outlook

Having finished a season that saw some significant“firsts” in program history, the 2005 Citadel soccerteam begins a new era with the hiring of first yearhead coach Chris Lenzo. Coach Lenzo is optimisticabout the possibility of building on the strides madelast year.

“We are returning a lot of talent and adding a veryhard-working, committed freshman class,” remarkedLenzo. “Having gotten a small taste of SouthernConference success this past year with our firstconference point, I’m confident that the players aregoing to have their minds set on taking another stepforward this fall.”

Lenzo plans on creating a system of play around atalented core from some of the best soccer clubs inthe country. “With players from clubs like Bethesda,CASL, Charlotte Soccer Club, Internationals, ClearwaterChargers, and Peachtree City Lazers, we will look toplay an attacking style based on possession,”commented Lenzo. “Our depth of talent hasincreased every year, and I think we are at a pointwhere we can play a style that involves keeping theball and allowing more players to get forward tosupport the attack.”

Leading the list of returnees this fall are seniorsLauren Merchant, the team’s top scorer with 19points and Miriam Crawford, who contributed threegoals. The top goalkeeper is senior AngieEllenwood, who started 12 of 14 games andregistered a team-high 74 saves.

The 2005 schedule pits the Bulldogs against severalfamiliar foes, as well as some first-time opponents.

After a scrimmage against Campbell the Bulldogs headto Lexington, VA to battle VMI.

“I think the rivalry with VMI is wonderful,” said Lenzo.“It’s a game that both teams get up for and is agreat way to start off our season.”

The other big nonconference highlight is the October25 match with Florida State. “That will be a veryspecial night for our team. To play against an ACCteam the caliber of Florida State is an opportunity thatmany players do not get in their careers.”

While the conference schedule is largely the same asin years past, the turnover in conference coachesshould make it an intriguing year. In the past twoyears, new coaches have been hired at six of the 11Southern Conference schools. “Though Furman andGreensboro have traded the conference title back andforth, the conference has really improved overall in thepast few years. Charleston, Chattanooga andDavidson have clearly made great strides, and everygame in the conference is competitive.”

Coach Lenzo knows that with the competitiveschedule, the Bulldogs will need to draw on theattributes that help them every day at The Citadel. “Itwill be the psychological part of the game that willmake the difference for us. We need to take themental toughness, commitment, and work ethic thatmakes a cadet a cadet and translate it onto the field.”

On May 4, The Citadel’s Director of AthleticsLes Robinson along with Senior Woman AdministratorKelly Simpson announced that former WesternCarolina assistant coach Chris Lenzo had been namedThe Citadel’s second head women’s soccer coach.

Lenzo joins the Bulldogs after having spentfour seasons with the women’s program at WesternCarolina. During his tenure with the Catamounts,Lenzo helped lead the team to a 22-16-5 SouthernConference record, a Southern Conference regularseason championship in 2001, and worked primarilywith the defense in 2002, which gave up only six goalsin 10 conference matches and posted an 8-1-2record. Lenzo was heavily involved in technicaldevelopment and fitness training for the team, as wellas tending to administrative duties and recruiting.

In addition to his work at Western, Lenzo wasan active camp instructor at Duke, Furman andKentucky, while assisting former Catamount headcoach Debbie Hensley in directing Western Carolina’ssoccer camp. Lenzo holds a National “C” coachinglicense from the U.S. Soccer Federation and aGoalkeeping Level 1 Diploma from the National SoccerCoaches Association of America.

Lenzo earned his master’s in Sociology fromthe University of Georgia in 1999 as well as inAmerican Studies from the University of Alabama in1994. He received his bachelor’s degree in Englishfrom Drake University in 1992, where he was amember of the soccer team. A former forward,Lenzo also saw action at outside midfield and sweeper.

Lenzo grew up in Minnetonka, MN where hegraduated in 1988 from Minnetonka High School. Heis married to Volunteer Assistant Coach Dr. CandaceBoan of Roswell, Ga.

Meet the Bulldogs

Christine Moran begins her second season as aBulldog assistant coach. Moran assists in all aspects ofThe Citadel program, primarily working with thegoalkeepers.

Moran joined the Bulldog staff having spent timeas a coach for the Canisius Women’s Soccer Clinic andElmwood Franklin Elementary. She also brings experienceto the weight room as Moran was a floor trainer for theBuffalo Athletic Club.

A captain in 2003 as goalkeeper, Moran’s saveper game (7.31) with a .787 save percentage ranked16th in the nation among Division I schools and wasinvited to participate in the Infosport, Inc. Pro SoccerCombine. During her junior season she ranked third inDivision I with a 9.17 saves per game and 10th with 19single game saves. As starting goalkeeper, Moranearned defensive most valuable player and wasnominated for the school’s Female Athlete of the Year.

Moran graduated from Canisius in 2004 withBachelor of Science degree and is currently workingtowards her master’s degree from The Citadel’s Collegeof Graduate and Professional Studies.

Candace Boan enters her first season as anvolunteer assistant coach with The Citadel soccerteam. Boan will assist with all aspects of the program,but will be particularly involved with developing andimplementing a sports psychology program for theteam as well as contributing to team tactics andfitness development.

Krista Gruhn is in her first year as a graduateassistant with The Citadel’s Sports Medicine staff.Gruhn’s primary duites this year will be wtih women’ssoccer as well as assisting in the day-to-day activities inthe training room.

Gruhn acquired her bachelor’s in athletic trainingfrom Salisbury University in Salisbury, MD where sheworked with softball, women’s basketball, men’s la-crosse, men’s soccer and track and field. She alsoworked part time during the spring of 2005 as a certi-fied athletic trainer for both men’s and women’s tennis.

At William and Mary, Gruhn gained experiencewith football as she participated in an internship withthe Tribe.

A 2004 graduate of Salisbury University, Gruhnis originally from Amityville, NY. Gruhn is currentlyworking towards her master’s in health exercise sci-ence at The Citadel’s College of Graduate and Profes-sional Studies.

Boan holds a USSF National D License andcontinues to be active in soccer leagues as well asroad races.

Boan has spent the last six years as aprofessor of Psychology at Western CarolinaUniversity, a position she will retain this year bycommuting between Charleston and Cullowhee.

She graduated from the College of Charlestonwith a degree in Psychology in 1993 and completedher doctorate in School Psychology from the Universityof Alabama in 1998.

A native of Roswell, GA, Boan was a standoutin soccer, basketball, and softball at Pace Academy inAtlanta, GA. Boan is married to head coach ChrisLenzo.

2004 In Review

The Citadel soccer team finished the 2004 seasonwith a 2-15-1 (0-10-1 SoCon) record. This yearmarked a 2-2 draw with Southern Conference rivalEast Tennessee State. The tie was the Bulldogs’ bestshowing against a Southern Conference opponentsince its 2001 inaugural season.

“We started the season really well,” said head soccercoach Megan Hjerling. “Then we got to the middle ofthe year and lost two key players for a few games.Defender Megan McAuliffe sat out the last third of theseason with an injury and Miriam Crawford missedgames battling injuries of her own.”

The Bulldogs’ two wins came back-to-back againstSouth Carolina State (8-1) and VMI (3-2) in lateSeptember. That same weekend, the Bulldogs foughtto a double overtime draw with East Tennessee State,2-2.

“We had a huge weekend when we played VMI andETSU back to back,” commented Hjerling. “Then wewent on to play Furman and Chattanooga, both ofwhich are two big guns in the Southern Conference.Playing Furman on the road and them coming hometo play Chattanooga, kind of hurt our morale.”

The junior class really stepped up this year as forwardLaurenMerchant wasthe top scorerwith eight goalsand threeassists tallying19 points. Twoof her eightscores weregame winners.Merchant wasalso the firstwomen’s soccerplayer at TheCitadel to benamed theSouthernConferencePlayer of theWeek afterrecording a hattrick against

S.C. State.Forward MiriamCrawford rackedup six points to bethe next topscorer with threegoals. DefenderJulie Austinrounded out thetop four with twogoals, one assist,five points, nineshots on goal anda .562 shot ongoal percentage.

Freshman MaggieBryan also had astandout year asshe started all 18games for the Bulldogs and solidified her place on thesquad being the third top scorer with two goals, oneassist, five points, 12 shots on goal and a .600 shoton goal percentage.

Goalkeepers junior Angie Ellenwood (9,903:01) andfreshman Brit Bunnell (725:44) shared time defendingthe Bulldog goal. As the leader, Ellenwood tallied 74saves with a .592 save percentage and was creditedwith both of The Citadel wins this season. Bunnell alsohad a solid performance as she ended with 65 savesand a .637 save percentage. Combined, the twogoalies averaged a .615 save percentage.

Three seniors also played their final season with TheCitadel soccer team. Shawna Hartman, Debbie Whiteand Kara Keiter were the last remaining players fromthe 2001 inaugural squad. Hartman netted two goalstallying up four points on the year while attempting 10shots on goal with a .556 shot on goal percentage.White also found the back of the net with a .500 shoton goal percentage, and Keiter tallied an assist on theseason finishing up with a .333 shot on goalpercentage.

“As a whole, the team played well,” stated Hjerling.“We played hard for 45 minutes but we needed toplay for 90. Our program is still very young and thatis what hurt us at the end of the day, but our teamwill continue to build and mature.”

The Southern Conference

The Southern Conference was formed on February 25, 1921 ata meeting in Atlanta, Ga. Fourteen institutions from the 30-memberSouthern Intercollegiate Athletic Association (SIAA) reorganized as theSouthern Conference. Those charter members included Alabama, Auburn,Clemson, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Kentucky, Maryland, MississippiState, North Carolina, North Carolina State, Tennessee, Virginia, VirginiaTech and Washington & Lee. Athletic competition began in the fall of1921.

In 1922, six more schools - Florida, Louisiana State,Mississippi, South Carolina, Tulane and Vanderbilt - joined the fold. Ayear later, the University of the South joined the ranks. Virginia MilitaryInstitute became a member in 1924 and Duke University came into thefold in 1929.

Since then, conference membership has experienced a series ofmembership changes with 42 institutions having been affiliated with theleague. The league has undergone two major transitions during its history.

The first occurred in December 1932 when the SoutheasternConference was formed out of the 23-school Southern Conference. Theleague’s 13 members west and south of the Appalachian Mountainsreorganized to help reduce the extensive travel demands that werepresent in the league at the time. In 1936, the Southern Conferenceinvited The Citadel, William & Mary, Davidson, Furman, Richmond andWake Forest to join the membership.

The second major shift happened in 1953 when Clemson,Duke, Maryland, North Carolina, North Carolina State, South Carolinaand Wake Forest officially withdrew from the league to form the AtlanticCoast Conference. This change was brought about due to the desire ofmany of those schools to schedule a greater number of regular seasonbasketball games against their local rivals.

Today, the league continues to thrive with a membership thatspans four Southeastern states. Current league members are AppalachianState, College of Charleston, The Citadel, Davidson, Elon, Furman,Georgia Southern, UNC Greensboro, Chattanooga, Western Carolina andWofford. The most recent addition, Elon University, joined the SouthernConference on July 1, 2003. The Phoenix replaced Virginia MilitaryInstitute which left the conference on June 30, 2003.

Prior to Elon, the most recent expansion had taken place inDecember 1995 when three schools were approved for admission:College of Charleston, UNC Greensboro and Wofford. UNC Greensboroand Wofford began competing in the league in 1997-98 and College ofCharleston entered the league during the 1998-99 season.

The newest change which took place in the summer of 2005came when East Tennessee State left the conference leaving the leaguewith only 11 teams.

Administration

The Citadel Board of Visitors announced June 19 thatthey have selected Lt. Gen. John W. Rosa Jr. to be thecollege’s 19th president subject to his release from activeduty. Rosa, a member of the Class of 1973, is currentlyserving as the superintendent of the U.S. Air Force Academyin Colorado Springs.

“I am extremely honored to be selected as theCitadel’s next president and I sincerely appreciate The CitadelBoard of Visitors’ vote of confidence in me,” Rosa said of hisappointment. “Donna and I are excited about the prospects ofreturning to Charleston and taking on the challenges ofrunning this great institution.”

“It goes without saying, however, that – pending myrelease from active duty — we will truly miss the outstanding

men and women of our Air Force family with whom we’vehad the privilege to serve for more than 32 years. But, it’stime to move on and I can’t think of a better place to beginthe next chapter in our lives than in Charleston and at myalma mater.”

Rosa, who was the Bulldogs’ starting quarterback in1970 and went on to earn three varsity football letters, willsucceed Maj. Gen. John S. Grinalds who left The Citadel onAug.1. The Board of Visitors named Brigadier General RogerClifton Poole, a business professor and former vice presidentfor academic affairs, to serve as interim president until Rosaarrives.

Rosa, 53, took over as superintendent of the AirForce Academy in July of 2003. A command pilot with morethan 3600 flying hours, Rosa was commissioned in the AirForce in 1973 after graduating from The Citadel with a B.S. inbusiness administration. He holds a master’s degree in publicadministration from Golden State University and hascompleted programs at Harvard, the U.S. Army War College,the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College and theAir Command and Staff College.

Board of Visitors Chairman Billy Jenkinson praisedRosa’s credentials. “With his first-hand knowledge of thecollege and his vast leadership experience, John Rosa is theideal person to be our next president,” Jenkinson said.

At a school where leadership is taught and duty is partof the curriculum, The Citadel has the right person to lead itsDepartment of Athletics in Les Robinson. A virtual Who’s Whoin intercollegiate athletics and one of the region’s most sought-after speakers, Robinson begins his fifth year as the Bulldogs’Director of Athletics.

Possessing more than four decades of college athleticexperience to his credit, Robinson, who also served as athleticsdirector and basketball coach at North Carolina State and EastTennessee State, is only the fifth athletics director in Citadelhistory. He served as the Bulldogs’ basketball coach from 1974-85, having spent the five previous seasons as an assistant coach.

In his first four years leading The Citadel’s athleticsprogram, Robinson’s skills as a proven fund-raiser have alreadybenefited The Citadel Brigadier Foundation.

During the past four years, the school witnessed theopening of the Altman Athletic Center at Johnson Hagood Sta-dium and the addition to McAlister Field House for women’sathletics.

The Citadel, under Robinson’s guidance, has hosted theSouthern Conference cross-country championships, the first two

rounds of the women’s basketball championships, the men’sand women’s tennis championships and the baseball tourna-ment.

A 1965 graduate of N.C. State, Robinson served fiveyears as a Bulldog assistant coach under Dick Campbell andGeorge Hill, and eventually spent 11 seasons as The Citadel’shead basketball coach from 1974-85. He directed the 1978-79and 1984-85 teams to 20 and 18 victories, respectively. Robinsonwas named the Southern Conference Coach-of-the-Year in 1979and was tabbed South Carolina’s Coach-of-the-Year in 1979 and1985.

Following his tenure at The Citadel, Robinson becamethe head basketball coach at East Tennessee State, where hecoached the Buccaneers for five years increasing their win total(7-14-20-27) each year.

The West Virginia native remains the only coach inSouthern Conference men’s basketball history to earn leaguecoach-of-the-year honors at two different schools, and he ranksfifth on the conference’s list of basketball wins.

Robinson is in his seventh year serving on the presti-gious NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Committee, one of theNCAA’s most influential committees. The Committee is respon-sible for site selection for each round of the NCAA Division Imen’s basketball championships.

Robinson earned a Bachelor of Science degree in edu-cation and recreation from N.C. State in 1965 and added amaster’s degree in education and guidance from Western Caro-lina in 1969.

Robinson is married to the former Barbara Simon ofSt. Albans, WV. The Robinsons, who have maintained a homeon Sullivan’s Island since coaching at The Citadel, have fourchildren and eight grandchildren.
