The Norwich University men’s soccer team is looking torecapture its championship form after dropping to fourth placein the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) last year. The Cadets, who qualified for the ECAC New EnglandTournament last fall, are hoping to return to the NCAATournament for the second time in three seasons. Norwich returns several key players to this year’s squad, led by senior midfielder Roger Motaze. Motaze, who will serveas one of the team’s co-captains this season, scored five goalsand added two assists as a junior last year. The former GNAC“Rookie of the Year” figures to provide excellent leadership to arelatively young team that is still developing. Norwich head coach Kyle Dezotell, who has broughttremendous success to the program over his four years at theschool, is looking forward to what the upcoming season willbring. “We are very excited about our chances to compete at ahigh level this fall,” says Dezotell. “We have the nucleus of avery solid, young team, but our success will largely depend onthe ability of our freshmen and sophomores to step in and makesignificant contributions.

“Our sophomore class is extremely talented and we can’twait to see how much they will have improved this fall.” Senior Mike Lee and sophomores Mike Ravenelle and GarrettShufelt return and should provide veteran leadership to themidfield, an area of strength for the Cadets this fall. Ravenelleand Shufelt combined to score nine goals in 2009, and bothhave improved over the summer. Norwich should be strong at forward this fall as well, withjunior Ryan Robertson and sophomore Jake Leclaire headliningthat unit. Robertson showed flashes of potential last season, including a hat trick and two assists in NU’s 8-0 victory overGreen Mountain. Leclaire, meanwhile, scored two goals anddished out a team-best six assists as a freshman.

The biggest question marks on the roster heading into thefall surround the defense and goalkeeper positions. The Cadetsgraduated four-year starting defender Chris Rivet this pastspring, and they will sorely miss his dependability along theback line. NU will also be without Charles Maxwell, who hadserved as the team’s starting goalie for the past two seasons. Sophomore Sam Armus, who appeared in four games as afirst-year player in 2009, and freshman Alex Toomey areexpected to battle it out for the right to replace Maxwell ingoal. “This year’s team will have excellent experience andleadership in seniors Roger Motaze and Mike Lee who havestarted almost every game over their careers,” says Dezotell.“Lee has an uncanny ability to play just about every positionon the field, and we will likely use him in many different rolesthis fall. Motaze will look to round off his excellent four-yearcareer with his best year yet. He is undoubtedly one of the topplayers in New England when he performs at his peak leveland we expect nothing less from him in his final season. “Zach Blodgett is going to set a great example for us thisfall as he continues his rehab from a torn ACL during the springseason,” adds Dezotell. “He has an outside shot at being ableto play towards the end of the season and he is doing everythingpossible to make this a reality. His hard work and desire will bea great example for the younger players to draw from.”
