Bearcat athletes excel on their respective teams throughout the year. Several teams have attained postseason success during recent seasons, continuing a history of excellence in Willamette Athletics. These teams and athletes also shine in the classroom. From Academic All-District and Academic All-America selections to several Fulbright, Kemper and NCAA Postgraduate scholarship winners, WU athletes have been honored for theiracademic achievements. It is this combination, along with a strong commitment to community service and Willamette’s motto, “Not unto ourselves alone are we born,” that makes BearcatAthletics great.

”We will be redefining who we are ... And that comes from hard work, both from the coach’s side and from the players’ side, putting high demands on both the players and myself in attaining those goals.”

Lloyd Fobi is in his first year as the headcoach of the Willamette University men’ssoccer team. Prior to arriving at WU, Fobiwas an assistant men’s soccer coach at nearby Corban University for a year anda half. He also has been a coach with theOregon Olympic Development Program.

“I always wanted to find an opportunity where I could express myself as a coach ... a program that is hungry to grow,” Fobi said. “I have lived in Salem for four years and I’ve always had an eyeon Willamette. When it opened up, I waseager and willing to jump on it.”

As a college player, Fobi competed forOregon State University in Corvallis, Ore.He played on two OSU teams that were nationally ranked (2003, 2005). He helpedthe Beavers reach the NCAA Tournamentin 2003.

“It’s a different angle looking at the game from a coach’s perspective ... you have to look at it from the whole picture, what the final goal will be and how to get there. How do you build each day to get to that?,” Fobi said.My experience at Corban has really

been seeing how you develop a team ... understanding that blueprint for success that is needed in building a program.” He hopes to continue the progress Willamette has made in recent years, while adding his ownapproach to the game.

“We will be redefining who we are ... defining again who we are,” Fobi said. “And that comes from hard work, both from the coach’s side and from the players’ side, putting high demands on both the players and myself in attainingthose goals.”

Fobi wants to build a team that works hard and sets high goals and standards. Willamette competes in the NorthwestConference and is a member of NCAADivision III.

“Our goal is to be the best team in our conference,” Fobi commented. “We will be a blue collar team. That is what we have to be to reach our goals. It’s how you carry yourself ... it’s working hard, butworking smart.”

WHERE WE’RE GoINGWHERE WE’VE bEENWillamette allowed just 26 goals in 2010, as the Bearcats achieved a 1.32 goals against average. It was the fewest goals allowed by Willamette since 2001.

The Bearcats played the entire season without Erik Kaufman, who suffered a knee injury in the spring. Kaufman led WU in scoring in 2008 and 2009.

Willamette finished the year at 3-13-3, overall including 1-11-2 in the NWC. The Bearcats lost a total of six games by a single goal and were defeated by more than two goals only once.

Brendan Dineen led WU in scoring in 2010 with three goals and one assist. Bob Paras earned three goals and Mike McGrew led the team with six assists. Goalie Eben Hellekson made 87 saves and earned three shutouts.

Some of WU’s soccer success goes back to the early years of the team, which began playing in 1980. The Bearcats registered eight consecutive winning seasons from 1987 through 1994. Willamette won NAIA District 2 Championships in 1982 and 1991. WU joined NCAA Division III in 1998.

In 1990, Dick Hmura scored a school record 5 goals for the Bearcats versus Colorado Christian. He earned a WU record 19 goals in 1991 and set the career record at Willamette with 46 goals from 1998-91.

Head Coach Lloyd Fobi is ready to start his first season at Willamette by building a talented, hard-working team with strong fundamental play and a commitment to individual responsibility. He is encouraged by the abilities of the returning players and by the excitement of the newcomers.

This year the seniors are goalies Alfredo Zuniga and James Neal, plus defender Brendan Dineen. Last year, Zuniga earned a 0.50 goals against average in limited action, while Dineen led the Willamette in scoring with 3 goals and 1 assist.

Dineen also contibuted to solid defensive play by the Bearcats. Willamette earned a team goals against average of 1.32 last season while shutting out four opponents.

Another encouraging factor is the return of junior forward Erik Kaufman to the WU lineup. He missed the 2010 season with an injury after scoring a total of 15 goals in his first two seasons with the Bearcats.

Other key returning players are juniors Mike McGrew, Trevor Jensen, Etienne Galbreath and Loftin Langsdorf, as well sophomore Adan Vazquez.

McGrew returns after topping WU with six assists last season. Jensen battles for loose balls and has the speed to surge into the attack. Galbreath and Langsdorf will anchor the Bearcats’ defense.

Vazquez is fast and can add to the overall pace of the game. He is one of several sophomores who will combine with WU’s nine juniors to provide the bulk of the team’s strength.

Kevin Martin, Brandon Shiluk, Will O’Neil and Robin Hryciuk also made significant contributions as freshmen last fall. Hryciuk had three assists and Martin earned two.

Willamette has six freshmen on the team’s 26-man roster. They will battle for playing time while providing quality depth.

With an average class size of 14 and a student-to-faculty ratio of 10:1, Willamette provides a personal classroom experience where professors get to know you well, making it easy to find individualized help or ask questions.

The life of the Willamette student is active, thought-provoking and focused on community — in the classroom and out. More than 100 student organizations, in addition to numerous athletic, leadership and service opportunities, help you develop your character in addition to your intellect — and have fun, too.

Our students are engaged in communities locally and around the world. About 50% earn study abroad credit before they graduate, and 68% of students complete at least one internship while at Willamette.

Academics come first at Willamette, but you still have time to compete. Our athletes, both formal and informal, have an enthusiastic network of supporters. Willamette’s NCAA Division III athletics program includes 10 men’s and 10 women’s sports and about 25% of students are DIII student-athletes.

Our alumni say their time at Willamette was life-changing, and they credit their education with providing them the expertise they needed for a successful career and life — whether they went on to a job, prestigious graduate program, national fellowship or public service.

SALEM, oREGoN

Located in the heart of Oregon’s Willamette Valley, the university is situated ideally to access all the benefits of the Pacific Northwest. Gorgeous forests, rivers, mountains and ocean beaches nearby. A relaxed and creative culture. Vibrant arts and music scenes. And, coffee shops on almost every block.

Willamette University is in the heart of downtown Salem, Oregon’s capital, a community that is large enough to provide plenty of entertainment, yet personal enough that you’ll usually run into someone you know.

When you want to enjoy some of Oregon’s attractions outside Salem, it’s not hard to find a university organized trip or an informal group of friends to join you — whether you plan to snowboard on Mount Hood, catch a concert in Portland or build a bonfire at the coast.

The Willamette University soccer teams play home games at Sparks Field, an artificial turf facility on the WU campus. Sparks Field has lights for night games and seats 500 fans. The facility, which features a FieldTurf surface, is one of the top small college fields in the Pacific Northwest. Sparks Field also includes covered seating for both teams and has a public address system.

Adjacent to Sparks Field is the Lestle J. Sparks Center. The Sparks Center includes the Fitness Center, which is available for use by the soccer teams. The Currey Classroom in the Sparks Center is a great location for team meetings and to evaluate player performances on video.

Other facilities at WU include Cone Field House for volleyball as well as men’s and women’s basketball, McCulloch Stadium for football plus track and field, John Lewis Field for baseball, the WU Natatorium for swimming, plus the WU Tennis Courts and the WU Softball Field. NCAA Division III is where the true student-athlete studies and competes. The National Collegiate Athletic Association is the main governing body of collegiate sports, dividing levels of classification into three divisions. D3 institutions are largely regarded as leading academic institutions and do not offer athletic scholarships. Still, athletics in D3 is highly competitive. There are over 136,000 athletes at over 430 D3 colleges and universities and each one is studying to earn a valuable degree in preparation for the workplace while playing the sport that he or she loves.

For D3 athletes, sports have been an integral part of our lives since our youth. From elementary school through high school, sports have complemented our educational experience. And as college looms, we want to continue playing the sport we love while receiving an education from a first-rate college. A D3 school is that fit.

The nine private colleges and universities in Oregon and Washington that form the Northwest Conference are building a reputation as one of the top NCAA Division III leagues in the nation. The NWC is nationally competitive in a broad spectrum of sports.

Formed in 1926, the NWC is 84 years old and is one of the oldest conferences in the western United States. The NWC’s current members in Oregon are Willamette, George Fox, Linfield, Lewis and Clark, and Pacific. Members located in Washington are Pacific Lutheran, Puget Sound, Whitman and Whitworth.

Charter members included Willamette, the College of Idaho, Linfield, Pacific and Puget Sound. Albany College was added in 1931, remained for seven years, and then returned in 1949 as Lewis & Clark College. Pacific Lutheran joined in 1965 and was followed by Whitworth in 1970. The College of Idaho withdrew from the conference in 1978.

Whitworth dropped out in 1984 and returned in 1988. Menlo joined in 2006 as a member in football only and dropped out in 2009.

The NWC originally sponsored athletic competition for men’s sports only, but joined forces with the Women’s Conference of Independent Colleges in 1984 to form the Northwest Conference of Independent Colleges. The name was shortened back to the original Northwest Conference in 1998.

Also in 1998, all nine NWC members shifted affiliation from the NAIA to the NCAA. Members knew the move would foster equity, sportsmanship and a genuine concern for all student-athletes.
